Abstract:Here, five new donor- -acceptor- -donor (D- -A- -D) type conjugated acceptors have been designed by incorporating quinacridone as the donor unit, thiophene as the common -bridging unit, and five central acceptor units. To investigate the influence of various central acceptor units on the geometric, electrical, optical, charge transport and photovoltaic properties of the designed acceptor molecules, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods have been employed. The findings (frontier molecular orbital analysis and various key parameters viz. bond length alteration parameter, charge transfer rate, power conversion efficiency etc.) affirm that increasing the electron-withdrawing nature of the central acceptor units improve the performance of the designed acceptor molecules. The observed reorganization energy ( ) values infer the electron accepting nature of the investigated compounds. Moreover, the absorption properties manifest that compounds C2 and C4 have the highest values. The properties of the D/A blends also suggest that complexes A1/C2 and A1/C4 can facilitate charge carrier separation at the D/A active layer. Furthermore, the photovoltaic performance of the D/A complexes also reveal that complex A1/C2, with a theoretical PCE of 30.33\%, can be considered as the most promising candidate for application in OSCs.

Abstract:Fourteen substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) molecules in a donor (D)-acceptor (DPP)-donor (D) arrangement were designed. We employed density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT and the ab initio wave function second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) methods to investigate theoretically these systems. The aromatic substituents have one, two or three hetero- and non-hetero rings. We comprehensively investigated their optical, electronic and charge transport properties to evaluate potential applications in organic electronic devices. We found that the substituents based on one, two or three aromatic rings bonded to the DPP core functioning as a donor can improve the efficiency of an organic solar cell by fine-tuning the HOMO/LUMO levels to match acceptors in a bulk heterojunctions with PC61BM and the non-fullerene small-molecule ITIC (3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4 hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]-dithiophene) acceptors. Several properties of interest for organic photovoltaic devices were computed. We show that the investigated molecules are promising for applications as donor materials when combined with typical acceptors in bulk heterojunctions because they have appreciable energy conversion efficiencies resulting from their low ionization potentials and high electronic affinities. This scenario allows a more effective charge separation and reduces the recombination rates. A comprehensive charge transfer analysis shows that the D – A (DDP) – D systems have significant intramolecular charge transfer, further confirming their promise as candidates for donor materials in solar cells. The significant photophysical properties of DPP derivatives, including the computed high quantum yields of fluorescence emission, also allow these materials to be used in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Abstract:In organic solar cells (OSCs), acceptors emerged as a significant class of photoactive materials. On account of the already reported compound PTT-FBTz, five D - -D - -D type acceptors (C1-C5) have been designed using methyl-substituted bithiophene as the common terminal unit (D ) and five different core units ( -D - ). Both density functional theory (DFT) and its counterpart, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) approaches were utilized to thoroughly examine the influence of core engineering on optoelectronic as well as photovoltaic properties. The results suggest that alteration of the core unit enhanced the designed acceptor molecules' performance. Besides, the electron-accepting nature of the designed compounds are confirmed from the calculated reorganization energy ( ) values. Additionally, it is clear from the designed compounds' absorption properties that compound C5 has higher values in both phases. Based on the D/A complex properties, the designed A1/C1-C5 complexes, can boost the separation of charge carrier at the donor/acceptor junction. Besides, due to their photovoltaic performance, complex A1/C5 achieving a PCE of 24.65\%, stands out as the most favorable option for OSC fabrication.

Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers bearing non-covalent configurationally locked backbones have a high potential to be good photovoltaic materials. Since 1,4-dithienyl-2,5-dialkoxybenzene (TBT) is a typical moiety possessing intramolecular S...O interactions and thus a restricted planar configuration, it was used in this work as an electron-donating unit to combine with the following electron-accepting units: 3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TFT), thieno-[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD), and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) for the construction of such D-A conjugated polymers. Therefore, the so-designed three polymers, PTBTTFT, PTBTTPD, and PTBTDPP, were synthesized and investigated on their basic optoelectronic properties in detail. Moreover, using [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as acceptor material, polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated for studying photovoltaic performances of these polymers. It was found that the optimized PTBTTPD cell gave the best performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.49%, while that of PTBTTFT displayed the poorest one (PCE=1.96%). The good photovoltaic behaviors of PTBTTPD come from its lowest-lying energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) among the three polymers, and good hole mobility and favorable morphology for its PC71BM-blended film. Although PTBTDPP displayed the widest absorption spectrum, the largest hole mobility, and regular chain packing structure when blended with PC71BM, its unmatched HOMO energy level and disfavored blend film morphology finally limited its solar cell performance to a moderate level (PCE: 3.91%). Abstract:The design and development of novel and efficient donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) type conjugated systems has attracted substantial interest in the field of organic electronics owing to their intriguing properties. In this paper, we have designed seven new and efficient D-π-A type conjugated systems (M1-M7) by a variety of π-linkers with triphenylamine (TPA) as the electron donor and diphenyldiketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as the electron acceptor using density functional theory (DFT) formalism for organic solar cells (OSCs). The π-linker has been substituted between the donor and acceptor for efficient electron transfer. Here, our primary focus is on narrowing the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps, electronic transition, charge transfer rate, reorganization energies, and the theoretical power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Our study reveals that the designed compounds exhibit excellent charge transfer rates. The absorption properties of the compounds have been examined using the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method. The TD-DFT study shows that compound M2 possesses the highest absorption maxima with a maximum bathochromic shift. For a better understanding of the electron transport process of our designed compounds, we have designed donor/acceptor (D/A) blends, and each of the developed blends (FREA/M1-M7) can encourage charge carrier separation. According to the photovoltaic performance of the D/A blends, compound FREA-M2, which has a theoretical PCE of 16.53%, is the most appealing choice for use in OSCs. We expect that by thoroughly examining the relationship between structure, characteristics, and performance, this work will serve as a roadmap for future research and development of TPA-DPP-based photovoltaic materials.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) are used to investigate the ground- and excited-state properties of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) monomers based on 3,6-carbazole (CB) combined with various-conjugated benzothiazole derivatives, using B3LYP and the 6-311 G basis set. To create nine D-A-D monomers for this investigation, nine (9) distinct acceptors were inserted at the C3 and C6 positions of carbazole. The impact of various electron-donor groups on structural, electrical, and optoelectronic properties is investigated. Our technique for developing novel donor monomers provides a theoretical framework for further optimizing the photovoltaic device's electrical, optical, and efficiency features. The HOMO and LUMO energies, bandgap, excited state, exciton binding energy, open-circuit voltage (V<sub>OC</sub>) and absorption spectra were calculated. Our findings indicate that CB-TDP-CB and CB-SDP-CB monomers have an appropriate electronic structure for polymer solar cells.

Abstract:We have used density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) to perform a theoretical study of seven novel small molecules SMi (i = 1–7) characterized by their D-π-A-π-D structures, these molecules have been designed based on a reference molecule composed mainly of Diketopyrrolopyrole as acceptor. In addition, to improve the optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties, the D electron donor (Carbazole) was replaced by another donor (Pyranylidene), and the π bridge (Thiophene) was also replaced by other bridges. Thus, replacing the Carbazole with Pyranylidene results in a significant reduction in the energy gap Egap and an accompanying red shift in the absorption spectra, in addition to the decrease in electron and hole reorganization energy. On the other hand, modification of the π-bridge increased the V OC and LHE values. Finally, a study was conducted on the SMi (i = R, 1–7)/ PC61BM blend to assess the effective charge transport at the D/A interface.

Abstract:A recently synthesized photoactive donor named fluorinated thienyl–substituted benzodithiophene (DRTB-FT), modified with four novel end capped acceptor molecules, has been investigated through different electrical, quantum, and spectrochemical techniques for its enhanced electro-optical and photovoltaic properties. DRTB-FT was connected to 2-methylenemalononitrile (D-1), 2-methylene-3-oxobutanenitrile (D-2), 2-(2-methylene-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ylidene) malononitrile (D-3), and 3-methyl-5methylene-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one (D-4) as terminal acceptor moieties. The architectural D-1 and D-3 molecules owe reduced optical band gap of 2.45 and 2.28 eV benefited from A-D-A configuration and have broaden maximum absorption band (λmax) at 617 and 602 nm in polar organic solvent (chloroform). Reduced optical band gap sets the ease for enhanced absorption. Reorganization energy of electron (λe) of D-3 molecule (0.00397 eV) was smaller among all which disclosed its greater mobility of conducting electrons (ICT). Larger values of dipole moment (μ) of D-1 (5.939 Debye) and D-3 (3.661 Debye) molecules in comparison to R indicated greater solubilities of the targeted molecules. Among the tailored molecules, D-3 showed the lowest binding energy of 0.25 eV in solvent phase and 0.08 eV in gaseous phase. The voltaic strength of the designed molecules was examined with respect to fullerene derivative (PC61BM) which exposed that D-1 is the best choice for achieving higher PCE. TDM (transition density matrix), DOS (density of states) analysis, and binding energies all were estimated at MPW1PW91/6-31G (d, p) level of DFT (density functional theory).

Abstract:Two novel solution-processed acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) structured organic molecules with 5,8-disubstituted benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT or BDTT) as central and donor units, 2-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)rhodanine (DCRD) as acceptor unit and terminal group, and trithiophene (T3) as π-bridges, D(T3-DCRD)-BDT and D(T3-DCRD)-BDTT, are designed and synthesized for the application as donor materials in organic solar cells (OSCs). Both compounds exhibit broad absorption covering the wavelength range 300–750 nm and the relatively lower HOMO energy levels from −5.39 to −5.46 eV. D(T3-DCRD)-BDTT demonstrates strong absorbance and higher hole mobility than that of D(T3-DCRD)-BDT. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) values of the OSCs based on the compounds/PC61BM (1:1, w/w) are 1.10% for D(T3-DCRD)-BDT and 1.94% for D(T3-DCRD)-BDTT, under the illumination of AM. 1.5G, 100 mW/cm−2. Furthermore, the high open-circuit voltage (Voc) values are 0.93 V for D(T3-DCRD)-BDT and 0.96 V for D(T3-DCRD)-BDTT, respectively. It indicates that incorporating DCRD as an acceptor unit into D-A-D-type small molecule has proven to be promising candidates for high efficiency solution processed OSCs.
DFT and TD-DFT calculation of new thienopyrazine-based small molecules for organic solar cells

Abstract:BackgroundNovel six organic donor-π-acceptor molecules (D-π-A) used for Bulk Heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ), based on thienopyrazine were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) approaches, to shed light on how the π-conjugation order influence the performance of the solar cells. The electron acceptor group was 2-cyanoacrylic for all compounds, whereas the electron donor unit was varied and the influence was investigated.MethodsThe TD-DFT method, combined with a hybrid exchange-correlation functional using the Coulomb-attenuating method (CAM-B3LYP) in conjunction with a polarizable continuum model of salvation (PCM) together with a 6-31G(d,p) basis set, was used to predict the excitation energies, the absorption and the emission spectra of all molecules.ResultsThe trend of the calculated HOMO–LUMO gaps nicely compares with the spectral data. In addition, the estimated values of the open-circuit photovoltage (Voc) for these compounds were presented in two cases/PC60BM and/PC71BM.ConclusionThe study of structural, electronics and optical properties for these compounds could help to design more efficient functional photovoltaic organic materials.
Impact of end capped modification on BT-CIC molecule for high-performance photovoltaic attributes: a DFT approach

Abstract:With the aim of utilizing structural modeling techniques to design efficient organic solar cells, a quantum chemical density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) study have been carried out for the examination of the photovoltaic properties of four BT-ClC-based novel non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) molecules. The designed entities (BT1–BT4) have an A-π-D-π-A configuration with seven fused ring-based BDT central core and newly substituted peripheral acceptor moieties. The optical parameters (absorption maxima, light-harvesting efficiency, first excitation energies, and dipole moments), electronic properties (frontier molecular orbitals, density of states, and molecular electrostatic potential), and charge transfer characteristics (open-circuit voltage, transition density matrix, and fill factor) of the investigated molecules were evaluated using the selected B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) level of theory. The systematic computational analysis reveals that under the influence of terminal acceptor groups, there is an augmentation in the absorption range, and reduction in the band gap values. The electron withdrawing effect of acceptor moieties is evident from the electronic density distribution on the HOMO–LUMO orbitals, along with the density of state (DOS) graphs. Transition density matrix (TDM) analyses reveal consistent charge transfer in the newly devised entities. Reorganization energies computed for electron and hole are significantly lower than the reference, making the transfer of charge carriers efficient. Open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of reported acceptor entities, theoretically computed with PTB7-Th donor, revealed maximum output. Furthermore, the estimated fill factor (FF) of the investigated molecules predicted an increase in power conversion efficiencies. Consequently, all the computed parameters favor the applicability of our designed molecules in the field of organic photovoltaics by virtue of their excellent charge mobilities, increased absorption maximum values, and reduced band gaps.

Abstract:In this paper, newly metal-free four donor-[Formula: see text]-acceptor (D-[Formula: see text]-A) molecules (C1D1–C1D4) were designed and used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) application, based on literature C1-1. Tetrahydroquinoline, thiophene, and 2-cyanoacrylic acid act as the electron-D, spacer, and electron-A/anchoring groups for all dyes, respectively, while the donor part was tuned and the effect was examined. The density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) have been used on the electronic transitions, geometric structures, absorption properties, electron injection ([Formula: see text]), dye regeneration ([Formula: see text]), light harvesting efficiency (LHE), ground and excited states of dipole moments ([Formula: see text]), open-circuit photovoltage ([Formula: see text]), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and Mulliken population analysis (MPA) of the dyes. The TD-DFT method using different functionals with exchange-correlational (XC) and long-range correlated (LC) was calculated to obtain literature data. The computational outcomes have displayed that the Coulomb-attenuating method (CAM-B3LYP) in conjunction with a 6-31G(d,p) basis set was proficient in calculating the UV-Vis spectra of the molecules. The frontier molecular orbitals’ (FMOs) contribution of the HOMOs and LUMOs of C1D1-C1D4 molecules can be confirming positive consequences on the regeneration and electron injection processes. In particular, C1D4 (N(CH3) 2 ) molecule shows a smaller energy gap ([Formula: see text]), longer wavelength, high [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. To conclude, these outcomes display that the calculated C1D1–C1D4 molecules are capable applicants to deliver better performance of the DSSCs.

Abstract:End groups in small-molecule photovoltaic materials are important owing to their strong influence on molecular stability, solubility, energy levels, and aggregation behaviors. In this work, a series of donor-acceptor pentads (D-2-A-D-1-A-D-2) were designed and synthesized, aiming to investigate the effect of the end groups on the materials properties and photovoltaic device performance. These molecules share identical central A-D-1-A triads (with benzodithiophene as D-1 and 6-carbonyl-thieno[3,4-b]thiophene as A), but with various D-2 end groups composed of alkyl-substituted thiophene (T), thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), and 2,2'-bithiophene (BT). The results indicate a relationship between conjugated segment/alkyl chain length of the end groups and the photovoltaic performance, which contributes to the evolving molecular design principles for high efficiency organic solar cells.
Rational Design and Characterization of High-Efficiency Planar A–π–D–π–A Type Electron Donors in Small Molecule Organic Solar Cells: A Quantum Chemical Approach

Abstract:Taking the reported donor DR3TBDT as reference, a series of A–π–D–π–A type donor molecules involving different planar donor cores were designed and investigated by using density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent DFT methods. Preliminary calculations on geometries, energy levels and spectrum properties show that four of the designed molecules (4, 5, 12 and 13) could become potential donor replacements of DR3TBDT due to their good planarity, larger light harvesting efficiencies and similar exciton migration capability. Additionally, several factors influencing on short-circuit current density (Jsc) were analyzed by in-depth quantum chemical investigations on the transition density matrix, charge transfer indexes, exciton binding energy and Gibbs free energy loss in charge dissociation process. Comparative analyses demonstrate that 4 with indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene donor core has more significant electron transfer character and favorable exciton dissociation capability for enhancing the Jsc, and would be potentially promising donor material in organic solar cells.

Abstract:Taking the reporting donor SM0 as reference, three new A-π-D-π-A type small molecules donors (SM1, SM2, and SM3) were designed via replacing acceptor moieties. The molecular proprieties affecting the cell performance, such as, frontier molecular orbital, open circuit voltage (Voc), absorption spectrum, vertical and adiabatic ionization potential, vertical and adiabatic electronic affinity, and energy driving force ΔEL-L were investigated through the density functional theory (DFT) and the time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). All new designed molecules exhibit reduced energy gap, show a red shift absorption band, small energy binding Eb, moderate Voc, and improve the creation of hole and electron as compared to SM0, which demonstrate that these new designed molecules could be used as a promising donors materials for organic solar cell. Additionally, the three new designed molecules present a larger amount charge transfer qCT, a longer length charge transfer DCT than SM0 and have a smaller reorganization energy of hole λ(h) which improve the charge carrier mobilities.

Abstract:Two kinds of donor-acceptor π-conjugated copolymer based on poly{[N-hexyl-dithieno(3,2-b:2',3'-d)pyrrole-2,6-diyl]alt-[isoindigo]} (PDTP-IID) and poly{[N-hexyl-dithieno(3,2-b:2',3'-d)pyrrole-2,6-diyl]alt-[thiazol-2,5-diyl]} (PDTP-Thz) were investigated. These copolymers were synthesized via a Stille coupling reaction. The results showed the structure-property relationships of different donor-acceptor (D-A) combinations. The polymer structures and photophysical properties were characterized by 1H NMR, TGA, DSC, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, AFM, CV, and XRD measurement. Through UV-vis absorption and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements, it showed that the copolymers exhibit not only a low bandgap of 1.29 eV and 1.51 eV but also a deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of -5.49 and -5.11 eV. Moreover, photovoltaic properties in combination with the fullerene derivatives were investigated. The device based on the copolymers with PC71BM exhibited higher maximum power conversion efficiency and higher maximum short-circuit current density of 0.23% with 1.64 mA cm-2 of PDTP-IID:PC71BM and 0.13% with 1.11 mA cm-2 of PDTP-Thz:PC71BM than those of the copolymers with PC61BM. Measurements performed for N-hexyl-dithieno(3,2-b:2',3'-d)pyrrole-based copolymers proved the potential of these polymers to be applied in optoelectronic applications.
Unveiling the influence of end-capped acceptors modification on photovoltaic properties of non-fullerene fused ring compounds: a DFT/TD-DFT study

Abstract:Herein, unique A-D-A configuration-based molecules (NBD1-NBD7) were designed from the reference compound (NBR) by utilizing the end-capped acceptor modification approach. Various electron-withdrawing units -F, -Cl, -CN, -NO2, -CF3, -HSO3, and -COOCH3, were incorporated into terminals of reference compound to designed NBD1-NBD7, respectively. A theoretical investigation employing the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) was performed at B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level. To reveal diverse opto-electronic and photovoltaic properties, the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), absorption maxima (λ max), density of states (DOS), exciton binding energy (E b), open-circuit voltage (V oc) and transition density matrix (TDM) analyses were executed at the same functional. Moreover, the global reactivity parameters (GRPs) were calculated using the HOMO-LUMO energy gaps from the FMOs. Significant results were obtained for the designed molecules (NBD1-NBD7) as compared to NBR. They showed lesser energy band gaps (2.024-2.157 eV) as compared to the NBR reference (2.147 eV). The tailored molecules also demonstrated bathochromic shifts in the chloroform (671.087-717.164 nm) and gas phases (623.251-653.404 nm) as compared to NBR compound (674.189 and 626.178 nm, respectively). From the photovoltaic perspectives, they showed promising results (2.024-2.157 V). Furthermore, the existence of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the designed compounds was depicted via their DOS and TDM graphical plots. Among all the investigated molecules, NBD4 was disclosed as the excellent candidate for solar cell applications owing to its favorable properties such as the least band gap (2.024 eV), red-shifted λ max in the chloroform (717.164 nm) and gas (653.404 nm) phases as well as the minimal E b (0.126 eV). This is due to the presence of highly electronegative -NO2 unit at the terminal of electron withdrawing acceptor moiety, which leads to increased conjugation and enhanced the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) rate. The obtained insights suggested that the designed molecules could be considered as promising materials for potential applications in the realm of OSCs.

Abstract:A series of small molecules containing alternative multiple donor and acceptor units have been designed and synthesized. These small molecules introduce diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and difluorobenzotriazole (DFBZ) as acceptor units and different donor cores with the intention to modulate intermolecular and intramolecular interactions and ultimately improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE). The structure–property relationship has been systematically investigated through exploring the effect of the electron-donating ability of the central donor unit on optoelectronic properties, crystallinity and morphology. As a result, IDTTFD has the strongest absorption in the visible region and appropriate energy levels. The organic solar cells based on IDTTFD/PC61BM achieve the highest PCE of 7.06% with a Voc of 0.86 V, a Jsc of 14.08 mA cm−2, and a FF of 58%.
