Abstract:The Volta River in West Africa is one of the most regulated rivers influenced by dams in the world, and the regulation has resulted in substantial impacts on the hydrological alteration and morphological evolution of the Volta River Delta. However, comprehensive analyses of the relevant effects are still lacking to date. In this study, inter-annual variations of river discharge and sediment load for pre- and post-Akosombo Dam periods (1936 to 2018) were analyzed through simple regression and Mann–Kendall (MK) trend analysis whereas the intra-annual variations were dictated by the non-uniformity and regulated coefficients. The shoreline changes were further evaluated using Landsat remote sensing images (1972 to 2018) to explore the effects of hydrological alteration on the morphological evolution of the Volta River Delta. Hydrological analyses show that the inter- and intra-annual variations are much higher in the pre-dam period, suggesting the substantial regulation of the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River. The dam regulation has more significant effects on the sediment load delivered to the delta than the river discharge, which decreased by 92.32% and 23.23%, respectively. Morphological analyses show that the progradation-erosion of the Volta River Delta constantly fluctuates within a relatively small range (maximum 0.5%) after the 1970s. The relationship between the variations of the delta area and sediment load implicates that a quasi-equilibrium state may have been established at the Volta River Delta, given the current sediment load. Our findings provide references for the future regulation and restoration of the Volta River Delta.

Abstract:Air, Soil and Water Research, Volume 16, Issue , January-December 2023. Hydropower is currently one of the leading renewable energy sources in developing countries. Despite the benefits that it can provide, it also triggers significant environmental impacts, such as changes in the reservoirs' water quality. In quantifying those changes, dissolved oxygen (DO) is used as one of the water quality indicators and is the most used variable to quantify water quality and analyze water pollution. This paper aims to establish a relationship between water quality and hydrometeorological variables in tropical reservoirs to better estimate dissolved oxygen. Univariate and multivariate techniques were used to analyze temporal and spatial changes in watersheds to better select vital variables for the forecast model, such as Vector Autoregression (VAR). The results show that, for all monitoring stations, the water quality variables associated with the DO process are COD, BOD, and PO4. Likewise, precipitation and flow discharge were the hydrometeorological parameters that had the most significant impact on DO. Also, the principal component analysis (PCA) allowed us to identify that the strength of the relationships between water quality and hydrometeorology changes depending on the location of the monitoring site. Finally, the implementation of a VAR model showed good performance metrics for dissolved oxygen predictions based on all analyses.
A review of the ecohydrology of the Sakumo wetland in Ghana

Abstract:The Sakumo wetland is an internationally recognized Ramsar site located in a largely urban area and provides essential ecological and social services to wetland community dwellers. Despite its importance, the wetland has over the years been subjected to human interference resulting in considerable risks of deteriorating water quality, biodiversity loss, and drying up of most parts of the wetland. The conversion of land for residential and agricultural uses has significantly altered the hydrological characteristics of the land surface and modified pathways and flow of water into the wetland. Other drivers identified included drainage (mainly as runoff from agricultural farms), anthropogenic pressure (waste discharge) due to infrastructure development associated with urbanization, chemical contamination as a result of industrial and household pollution, and unsustainable fishing practices (overfishing). The purpose of the study was to review some of the physical and chemical properties of the Sakumo wetland on the changing wetland resources with emphasis on water quality. Rapid urbanization, industrialization, and overexploitation of wetland resources were identified as key causative factors affecting the wetland functions. Their effects on the wetland among others include increased nutrient and toxic chemical load which has resulted in reduced wetland surface water quality and decrease in species diversity. pH of the wetland waters was generally alkaline which is characteristic of water bodies influenced by seawater under oxygenated conditions. The increasing trends of electrical conductivity, phosphates, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite, though small, point to deteriorating water quality in the wetland. The lagoon water was observed to be heavily polluted with nutrients particularly phosphate. The sequence of nutrient in the wetland was found to be in the order of PO4-P>NH3-N>NO3-N>NO2-N. These, if not checked, will result in further deterioration of the wetland function. In order to protect the wetland structure and function, it is recommended that a determination for both surface water and groundwater (quality and quantity) components of the ecological reserve (aquatic ecosystem) as well as the basic human need should be undertaken. In addition, a complete hydrological study of the wetland must be done. This will enable a well-balanced water allocation scheme to all users while still ensuring long-term survival and sustainability of the wetland.
Sedimentation assessment using hydrological simulation and bathymetry survey: The case of river Amissa drainage basin, Ghana

Abstract:Studies on freshwater bodies in Ghana for their sustainability are mostly concentrated on a few large rivers. However, other equally important rivers that do not attract research attention provide varied services and benefits to inhabitants and living organisms in their riparian communities. The basin of River Amissa as a major source of freshwater supply for several communities within its catchment has undergone various changes due to rapid socioeconomic and increasing anthropogenic disturbances. This consequently has led to increased sediment yield on the reservoir beside the river and the river basin itself. Hence the need to estimate the amount of sediment accumulated in the reservoir and in the river's catchment for their sustainability and management purposes. Sediment yield in the reservoir and the river basin were estimated using a bathymetric survey integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model respectively. Results from the bathymetric survey estimated the current capacity of the reservoir to be 4,321,060 m3. Reservoir storage capacity lost to sedimentation was 1,438,940 m3 representing 25% of the reservoir volume. Additionally, the SWAT (Arc SWAT) performance was very good with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) for calibration and validation being 0.88 and 0.84 respectively. For the entire 28-year period, simulated sediment yield increased by 10,263 tons per kilometer square.
Urban flooding: Coping with Weija Dam spillage by downstream communities in Ghana

Abstract:This study adds to knowledge by specifically focusing on the dam spillage-induced floods within a fast-urbanising city with weak law enforcement in a developing country. Employing a sequential mixed-method approach, we first selected and analysed data from 120 respondents through a survey and complemented it with key informants residing in the communities affected by flooding. The findings revealed that dramatic ramifications of dam spillage-induced floods disrupt the livelihoods of many individuals in the form of disruption to income-generating activities and substantial property loss. Notwithstanding the devastating effect of the dam spillage, residents lack advance and adequate preparedness. In coping with such challenges, most flood victims rely on support from nongovernmental sources. The challenge of flooding from the dam spillage is multifaceted and deeply rooted in complex factors which includes growing urbanisation, poor urban planning and weak law enforcement. Residents' adaptive strategies remain limited, demonstrating a dearth of resilience against such shocks. Contribution: In light of these challenges, the authors advocate a close collaborative working partnerships among stakeholders to provide flood risk management interventions, strategic planned dam spillage that minimises the effect of dam spillage-induced floods on the local communities, early warning systems and planning and enforcement of building regulations.
An extreme value analysis of water levels at the Akosombo dam, Ghana

Abstract:The Akosombo Dam is the largest dam in Ghana and is linked to the world's largest man-made lake by surface area. The top of flood control pool of the dam has been breached a number of times, so it is of interest to know the corresponding probability. The paper fits the generalized extreme value distribution to the extreme water levels - with all three of its parameters (including the shape parameter) accounting for various linear trends, seasonality and cyclic trends with respect to time, the first time such a model has been fitted. The fitted model contains in total 50 parameters. It provided an adequate fit, as evaluated by probability plots, quantile plots, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. It is used to provide return level estimates as well as probabilities of the top of flood control pool of the dam being breached.

Abstract:Abstract This study aims to review the existing literature on the past and future effects of climate, land use, and land cover changes on hydropower generation in West Africa (WA), based on listings in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases. This review shows that several African hydropower plants have experienced repeated power disruptions over the last three decades due to climate change and variability but it is less documented how increasing land use and land cover changes around the major dams have impacted the hydrological system and the hydropower generation. In the future, the risks of hydropower in WA may not be equally distributed within a country or region. Despite uncertainties in precipitation and on impacts on streamflow and water level in major basins, climate change is likely to reduce the available water over the range of 10%–20% (15%–40%) for the RCP4.5 (RCP8.5) scenario by 2050, which may considerably affect the water demand across all sectors, including hydropower. However, in the Kainji dam (Niger River basin), models project an increase in rainfall favorable to hydropower production for both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. In contrast, within the Black Volta sub-basin, the intensification of land use is predicted to favor runoff and, consequently, an increase in the generation of Bui hydropower in the near future, even though models predict a rainfall decrease. This increase in land use for agriculture to feed a growing population has other adverse effects that need to be assessed, namely sedimentation and siltation, which are harmful to hydropower plants. Finally, the combined impact of climate and land use changes on the efficiency of hydroelectric infrastructure in WA is not well documented, while sustainable planning and investments in the hydropower sector require consideration of the nexus between climate, land use changes, and water.

Abstract:In this study, the water quality of the Baro-Akobo River Basin in Ethiopia was comprehensively assessed. Key parameters including temperature (°C), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and ion concentrations such as K+, Ca2+, Na+, NO3 -, NO2 -, PO4 3-, CO3 2-, HCO3 -, and NH4 +were measured using standard methods, alongside sampling of phytoplankton, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, and fish. Phytoplankton and zooplankton were sampled using Hydrobios nets with mesh sizes of 30 μm and 55 μm, respectively, while macroinvertebrates were collected via the kicking method. Results indicated generally alkaline pH levels and elevated turbidity, but acceptable levels of dissolved oxygen and ion concentrations according to WHO and FAO guidelines. Moreover, the study suggests that the wetlands in Gambella and Benishangul-Gumz regions are currently in good condition, providing valuable insights for the conservation and sustainable management of Ethiopia's water resources, ensuring their conservation for both present and future generations. Local authorities can use the study's findings to implement remedial measures to protect water quality and biodiversity in the regions.

Abstract:Accelerated aging and eutrophication of water resources is a world menace attributed to influx of nutrient rich sediment from its catchment, resulting in poor water quality and shifts in ecological dynamism. Nyanza Gulf is a paramount source of livelihood, portable water, and of service to the rich biodiversity making it indispensable to the entire Lake Victoria watershed ecosystem. This water resource has been deteriorating over the past decades as a consequent of anthropogenic socio-economical activities. This has effectuated an increase in phytoplankton and hydrophyte colonies. The objective of this study was to track the quality and quantity of sediment inundation into the gulf considering the catchment micro-basins processes and influence of human socio-economical activities. Using Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) as an interface to Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with input of satellite digital elevation model (DEM), local rainfall, soil and land use data sets were utilized to determine the daily variability in sediment and nutrient loads from five major river basins. The SWAT model was successfully calibrated, and the performance validated with observed hydrological and water quality data. The model achieved identification of seasonal water quality budget filling in knowledge gaps about the catchment. River Nyando, Sondu-Miriu, Awach-Kibuon, Awach-Tende and Kibos discharge sediment loads of 3.91, 1.6, 1.18, 1.06 and 0.78 tons/ha respectively. Total suspended solids (TSS) concentration of up to 578mg/L on average daily is discharged by River Awach-Kibuon. This was associated with intense agricultural activities (>54% of the entire basin) on steep slopes (average 12.97) with Acrisols (15%of the basin) soils that is prone erosion. Poorly managed range-bush land that covers about 10% of this basin also contribute significantly to the TSS yield. River Kibos discharge least TSS concentration of 144.43 mg/L in comparison with other rivers mainly due gentle slope falling into a plain, low erodible Cambisols (covers 20% of the basin) and Ferralsols (10%) as well as Nanga forest effect at its exit. River Awach-Tende and Awach-Kibuon on average discharge 1.67 mg/L and 1.58 mg/L respectively of Total Nitrogen (TN) daily. This was linked to intensive farming on poorly managed dominant Phaeozems and Acrisols that are susceptible to leaching. River Sondu-Miriu is the least contributor with a daily average of 1.1101 mg/L dominated with low leached Nitisols. The bay receives highest Total Phosphorus (TP) loads from River Nyando with daily average of 0.3699 mg/L alluded to high biomass production in the basin and Sondu-Miriu least with 0.0288 mg/L. The fluctuation of nutrients and sediment fluxes correlated positively with rainfall events. The long rainfall season with average regular storm events in March to June yield highest monthly loads as compared to short rainfall season (September to November) with isolated intense storm events over a shorter time. The study depicted poor water quality discharged into the gulf throughout the year by the 5 major basins to be above average of conventional ecological healthy basins.

Abstract:Eco-environmental conservation has been a long challenge and even bottleneck for sustainable hydropower development. This study comprehensively reviewed the advances of researches on river damming impacts on biogeochemical cycling and thereby the aquatic eco-environment effects, zoobenthos habitat, fish habitat and migration routes, as well as structure and non-structure conservation measures. It analyzed the current challenges in fundamental researches and engineering applications as well as the underlying reasons, and highlighted the core aspects for future investigations. These include:① Long-term in-situ monitoring to discover the interception, transformation and transport processes of biogenic elements, and reveal the associated mechanism as well as the accumulated eco-environmental impacts; ② Reservoir induced changes in effective accumulated temperature regime for fish gonadal development and critical temperature regime for fish spawning, and consequently their joint effects on fish reproduction. In particular, the study pointed out the irrationality of some mandatory measures for indigenous fish conservation at present, and proposed the options such as ecological flow and tributary habitat compensation for high dams, and finally it provided some novel technologies to quantitatively assess the efficiency of conservation measures.

Abstract:This study assessed Ghana's national and international environmental commitments, laws and policies and the stakeholders' capacity to protect and manage the wetlands of a metropolis, Kumasi. The methods adopted included field surveys, desk studies (literature review), and interviews with various stakeholders. The results show that despite the sprawling urbanisation, patches of wetlands exist with relatively high diversity. The study further reveals that Ghana is a signatory to many international environmental conventions and treaties irrespective of the required obligations and commitments. However, the translation of the obligations of these conventions and treaties into local laws and policies, their implementation and enforcement have been woefully inadequate. Institutions mandated to oversee these processes are under-resourced or undermined by a multitude of issues. Whilst the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and its planning and hydrological units have the personnel and technical competence to deal with wetland issues, the National Disaster Management Organisation, on the contrary, has the financial and logistical support without the needed technical competence to manage wetland and flood challenges. For a developing country like Ghana, an integrated and collaborative approach between stakeholders is advocated based on a model that focuses on social and technical management of floods and wetlands for implementation by these stakeholders.

Abstract:More than a hundred hydropower dams have already been built in the Amazon basin and numerous proposals for further dam constructions are under consideration. The accumulated negative environmental effects of existing dams and proposed dams, if constructed, will trigger massive hydrophysical and biotic disturbances that will affect the Amazon basin’s floodplains, estuary and sediment plume. We introduce a Dam Environmental Vulnerability Index to quantify the current and potential impacts of dams in the basin. The scale of foreseeable environmental degradation indicates the need for collective action among nations and states to avoid cumulative, far-reaching impacts. We suggest institutional innovations to assess and avoid the likely impoverishment of Amazon rivers.

Integrated Water Resources Management in a Changing Climate: The Implication of Anthropogenic Activities on the Tana and Athi/Sabaki Rivers Water System for Sustainable Development

Abstract:This paper highlights the effects of damming and farming activities on the Tana and Athi/Sabaki Rivers’ water system. The two activities are responsible for freshwater shortages, pollution, and habitat and community modification downstream. Damming has resulted in modification of the stream flow, and in changes in the water table; while nutrient loading and sedimentation from irrigated agriculture, human settlements and industrial activities upstream are responsible for the pollution effect. The resulting effects were evaluated using the Global International Waters Assessment scoping methodology backed with hindsight experiences of the team members in both environmental and socio-economic issues. The individual scores when averaged led to the following results: 1) the effect of damming the river system was scored at 3 in a scale of 1–3, signifying a severe impact as attested by the freshwater shortages experienced downstream; 2) the effect of nutrient loading and sedimentation, using the same scale, was score at 2, a score that exhibited a moderate pollution problem. The degree of impact from nutrient and sediment loading varied with seasons. It was localized and more pronounced in hot spots in the dry season; while in the wet period, it occurred throughout the system as flooding occurred; 3) reduced stream flow and pollution affected ecosystem functions, resulting in habitat and community modification, 4) the impact of global climate change was difficult to score at the river basin level. However, deforestation resulting from slash and burn agriculture and harvesting of wood to meet domestic energy needs were practiced in a large scale, reducing the action of forests as carbon sinks, while promoting the emission of carbon-dioxide, which contribute to global climate change. This study concluded that freshwater shortages and pollution were issues of major concern and they were causing socio-economic conflicts. To address the concerns, a proactive approach borrowing from the tenets of Integrated Water Resources Management, Ecosystem Based Management and Integrated Coastal Zone Planning and Management, need be adopted as the vehicles that would promote sustainable development in the river basin.

Abstract:Lake Victoria’s water quality is increasingly becoming under heavy pressure mainly due to land based activities and aerial inputs which are taking place within the basin. This study was carried out to assess the spatial, including vertical and temporal, variation of the water quality of Lake Victoria on the Tanzanian side. Historical water quality data for the period from 2000 to 2016 was collected. Temperature, pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Turbidity were selected for study since they are the mostly measured and monitored water quality parameters. Land use-land cover changes were analysed using ArcGIS. ILWIS 3.7 software was used to classify the land use and land cover for the years 2000, 2010 and 2014. MERIS was used to analyse the spatial variation. One-way ANOVA was employed to test the significant variation between different parameters. The results showed that, for the pelagic zone, the range of temperature, pH, DO, and turbidity were 22.8 oC-28.68 oC, 6.3-10.52, 3.42-10.21 mg/l, 1.0 NTU-15.8 NTU respectively. The corresponding values for the littoral zones were 22.3 oC-26.8 oC, 6.47-10.16, 3.99-8.6 mg/l, 1.3-347 NTU respectively. The ANOVA analysis results show that there was a significant variation of NO3(p<0.01). Temperature, pH and DO decreased with the lake depth to the bottom for both zones. For the littoral zone, a strong correlation was observed between temperature and depth, temperature and DO, and between temperature and pH with R2=0.6, p<0.03, R2=-0.78, p<0.01 and R2=0.96, p<0.01, respectively. The bare soil, urban settlements and farm land increased by 38.9%, 8.4% and 10.7% respectively from the year 2000 to 2014 on the Tanzanian side. This could have led to water quality changes. Water quality parameters varied significantly between pelagic and littoral zones. Littoral zones are mostly polluted and thus should be the priority pollution control intervention areas.

Abstract:In Ghana, illegal mining (galamsey) activities have polluted most of the river bodies. For example, water bodies in Ghana that are polluted amounts to 60% with most of them in deteriorating condition. However, to live a sustainable life, there is the need to follow rules of environmental management, where pollution control and advanced treatment technologies are imperative. The adoption of control strategies and advanced technologies in galamsey-affected-water basins in Ghana will help provide real-time revitalization for supply of quality water. The control strategies for water pollution management and advanced technologies would particularly help utility companies in ensuring that all Ghanaians continue to get potable, reliable, and sustainable water supplies for the current and future generations. The paper covers three key control strategies for water pollution management, vis-à-vis six major aspects of advanced technologies and the use of artificial intelligence (AI). AI based decision-making tools help optimize the use of various treatment technologies, such as adsorption, ion exchanges, electrokinetic processes, chemical precipitation, phytobial remediation, and membrane technology to effectively remove pollutants from affected water bodies. The paper also focuses on advantages and disadvantages of several advanced technologies, challenges on leveraging the technologies while identifying gaps, and possible technology roadmap. The review contributes to water quality issues in Ghana's Pra river basin by embracing AI and other cutting-edge technologies to address the current water pollution crisis and also ensure sustainable and secure water supply for future generations. This contribution is in line with the United Nations' Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals' (SDGs) goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) and goal 3 (good health and well-being).

Abstract:The "One Village One Dam (1V1D)" is a rainwater harvesting technology initiated by the Government of Ghana in 2017 to make water available all year round for animal watering, irrigation and domestic use in dryland areas in northern Ghana. However, scepticism about the potential of the 1V1D to stave off water stress and its associated impact on local livelihood activities is still prevalent in the country. This case study of Savelugu Municipality investigated the impact of the 1V1D on local livelihood activities and the work-life balance of women. Using qualitative data collection methods, 12 focus group discussions and seven key informant interviews were conducted in six communities in the municipality. The results showed that after >5 years of implementation, not much has been achieved for the intended purposes of the project, namely water for animal watering, irrigation and household consumption. Non-performance of the dams was attributed to engineering flaws like poor design and small size which often resulted in early dry out of the dams in the dry season. However, emerging activities like water commercialisation have provided a source of sustenance to water vendors. The services of the vendors save women time to fulfil the demands of work, family and personal life. Overall, the persistence of water stress in the study communities and activities of Fulani herdsmen, who allowed their cattle to pollute the dams' water, necessitates the government to address the design flaws through retrofitting the existing dams and mainstreaming future 1V1D projects to effectively tackle water stress in Ghana's dryland areas.

Abstract:The town of Adzope, in the southeast of Cote dIvoire is faced with a sanitation problem, the direct consequence of which is the untreated discharge of wastewater into the Massan River reservoir. The objective of this work is to carry out a physico-chemical characterization of urban wastewater in the town of Adzope. This characterization of urban wastewater is a good indicator of the quality of discharges and their impact on the receiving environment. The pH, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC) and dissolved oxygen (O2) were measured in situ using a multi-parameter HANNA HI 9829. In the laboratory, the various physico-chemical parameters were analysed according to the analysis methods recommended by the French Association for Standardization. The results obtained show that the parameters studied (T, pH, EC, DO, COD, DOB5, TSS, NH4, NO3, PO4 and Cl) have variable contents from one site to another. Most of the parameters studied comply with the discharge standards established by Ivorian legislation, except suspended particles and phosphate ions. These two parameters have values that exceed the established standards. Thus, the discharge of this wastewater into the Massan River reservoir can lead to eutrophication.
