Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) present promising potential in the application of thermal management. Nevertheless, low thermal conductivity and risk of liquid leakage hindered the development of PCMs with broad adoption. Here, we fabricate a shape-stable composite phase change material by encapsulating polyethylene glycol (PEG) into a dual-network hydrogel, which was modified using Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes and silver nanowires (AgNWs). With the synergistic effect of MXene nanosheets and AgNWs, the composite material that was prepared demonstrates a significant increase in thermal conductivity, reaching a value of 0.64 (W/m·K) and also exhibits a suitable photo-thermal conversion efficiency (88.9%). Moreover, the resulting composite PCM with high-level of PEG loading (90.1%) deliver a remarkable phase change enthalpy (124.8 J/g), highlighting its excellent energy storage capability. Additionally, the final composite displays reliable structural stability and exceptional thermal management performance by reducing the operational temperature of a typical lithium-ion battery by over 12 °C during a 3C discharge process. We demonstrate a promising approach for developing composite PCM for thermal management.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) having a large latent heat during solid-liquid phase transition are promising for thermal energy storage applications. However, the relatively low thermal conductivity of the majority of promising PCMs (<10 W/(m ⋅ K)) limits the power density and overall storage efficiency. Developing pure or composite PCMs with high heat capacity and cooling power, engineering effective thermal storage devices, and optimizing system integration have long been desired. Our perspective outlines the needs for better understanding of multi-physics phase change phenomena, engineering PCMs for better overall transport and thermodynamic properties, co-optimizing device design, and integrating PCMs with potential applications. We start by covering the heat transfer fundamentals of PCMs. We then discuss PCM property characterization and need for materials design. We conclude by discussing higher-level device design and integration principles, as well as emerging applications and requirements. We also identify future research opportunities for PCM in thermal energy storage.

Abstract:A surface modification‐based phase engineering strategy is devised to achieve two key objectives simultaneously: enhancing the thermal storage capacity and ensuring optimal shape‐stability of phase change materials. This approach is designed to enable bifunctional thermal management and durable solar‐thermal‐electric power generation. Phase change materials (PCMs) present a dual thermal management functionality through intrinsic thermal energy storage (TES) capabilities while maintaining a constant temperature. However, the practical application of PCMs encounters challenges, primarily stemming from their low thermal conductivity and shape‐stability issues. Despite significant progress in the development of solid–solid PCMs, which offer superior shape‐stability compared to their solid–liquid counterparts, they compromise TES capacity. Herein, a universal phase engineering strategy is introduced to address these challenges. The approach involves compositing solid–liquid PCM with a particulate‐based conductive matrix followed by surface reaction to form a solid–solid PCM shell, resulting in a core‐shell composite with enhanced thermal conductivity, high thermal storage capacity, and optimal shape‐stability. The core‐shell structure designed in this manner not only encapsulates the energy‐rich solid–liquid PCM core but also significantly enhances TES capacity by up to 52% compared to solid–solid PCM counterparts. The phase‐engineered high‐performance PCMs exhibit excellent thermal management capabilities by reducing battery cell temperature by 15 °C and demonstrating durable solar‐thermal‐electric power generation under cloudy or no sunshine conditions. This proposed strategy holds promise for extending to other functional PCMs, offering a compelling avenue for the development of high‐performance PCMs for thermal energy applications.

Abstract:An overview of recent literature on the micro- and nano-encapsulation of metallic phase-change materials (PCMs) is presented in this review to facilitate an understanding of the basic knowledge, selection criteria, and classification of commonly used PCMs for thermal energy storage (TES). Metals and alloys with high thermal conductivity can be used as PCMs for rapid heat storage in compact systems owing to their high volumetric TES density. The emerging application of metal PCMs in different fields such as solar thermal energy management, smart wearable devices with thermal comfort control, and cooling of electronic devices call for the need of micro- and nano-TES particles, which can be synthesised in different forms to satisfy specific requirements. As metals are easily oxidised, especially at the micro- and nano-level, encapsulation of metal-based PCM particles is important for sustainable use at high operating temperature in ambient conditions. Recent studies focusing on the encapsulation of metallic PCMs at the micro- and nano-level have been reviewed and classified in terms of the melting point of metal/alloy PCMs used and types of encapsulation materials, such as oxides, polymers, carbon, and metals. The current review is expected to provide an outlook on novel metal and alloy PCMs with function-directed structures and superior TES properties for a broad range of applications.
Flexible core–shell structured Al-Cu alloy phase change materials for heat management

Abstract:The development of core–shell structured phase change materials (PCMs) with tunable melting points has been attracted much attention for thermal storage of solar energy, and a flexible shell is crucial for their practical applications. Herein, we prepared microencapsulated Al-Cu alloy PCMs (MEPCMs) with a flexible shell by a deposition-oxidizing calcination method. The Cu nanoparticles are chemically deposited on the surface of Al powders by a rapid replacement reaction, which further promotes the formation of Al-Cu alloy microspheres and the oxidation of Al to form Al2O3 shell during oxidation calcination. The prepared MEPCMs show excellent thermal cyclic performance and tunable melting point (549–592 °C). The presence of a thin film between the Al2O3 shell and Al-Cu alloy core may act as a buffer to accommodate volume change during melting-freezing process, obtaining a flexible core–shell structure. The heat storage density of Al-Cu alloy MEPCMs decreases by only 0.09% after 100 melting-freezing cycles, indicating high thermal cycling stability. In addition, the microencapsulated Al-Cu alloys present high latent heat (208.6–222.3 J·g−1) and relatively high thermal conductivity (∼1.8 W·(m·K)−1), which makes it attractive for application in high-temperature thermal storage systems.

Abstract:A prominent choice for phase change materials (PCMs) for passive solar thermoregulation is fatty acids because of their many beneficial characteristics for latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES). Their low thermal conductivity and additional storage container requirements to prevent leaks during heating time, however, severely restrict their range of applications. In order to address these issues with methyl palmitate (MP) as a phase transition material, it was first doped with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) after being incorporated with expanded waste glass (EWG) using the melting/blending procedure. The SEM, XRD, FTIR, DSC, and TGA techniques were used to investigate the thermal and chemical performance of composite phase change materials (CPCMs). The leak-proof composite phase change materials (LPCPCM) and thermal enhanced shape stabilized composite phase change materials (TE-SSCPCMs) had latent energy between 96.1 and 96.7 J/g and melting temperatures between 26.61 and 27.12 °C. Doping 2, 4, and 8 wt% of CNFs into CPCMs, conductivity got enhanced by 29.2, 62.5, and 112.5 % respectively, due to which, the TE-SSCPCM's charging/discharging periods were significantly shortened without changing their LHTES properties much. Further, evidence came from the thermal cycling test, TGA results, and the impressive thermal reliability, LHTES cycle performance, and chemical compatibility of all manufactured composites.

Abstract:Efficient storage of thermal energy can be greatly enhanced by the use of phase change materials (PCMs). The selection or development of a useful PCM requires careful consideration of many physical and chemical properties. In this review of our recent studies of PCMs, we show that linking the molecular structures of organic molecules to their physical properties can be used to focus attention on the most useful PCMs, including eutectic mixtures. Two of the major limitations concerning broader use of phase change materials are low thermal conductivity, especially for organic phase change materials, and suitable containment. We have addressed both issues in our recent investigations of novel form-stable composite PCMs with a freeze-cast matrix. The use of thorough experimental investigations, including cycling of materials hundreds or thousands of times through the melt-freeze processes, promotes our goals of advancing the use of PCMs for increased energy efficiency and sustainability.

Abstract:Thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs) offers enormous potential for regulation of unmatched energy supply and demand of renewable energy resources, recycling of waste thermal energy, and thermal management in high-power electronic devices. However, solid-liquid PCMs, which are the most commonly used PCMs, suffer from fatal drawbacks of liquid leakage, shape instability and severe corrosiveness at elevated temperatures, posing a great threat to the stability, safety and service life of thermal energy storage systems. Here, we developed a class of novel, ultrahigh-performance solid-solid PCMs. A giant figure of merit of 9056 × 10 6 J 2 /(K⋅s⋅m 4 ), much higher than most existing PCMs (for instance, 15 times higher than commercial PCMs), was achieved by employing the large latent heat, high thermal conductivity and high density of these metallic Ni-Mn-Ti PCMs. Furthermore, these materials have tunable high phase-transition temperatures (290–500°C), suitable for applications at different elevated temperatures, and exhibit superior thermal cycling stability. Being solid-solid PCMs, they possess inimitable advantages of no leakage risk, no corrosiveness and shape stability. Therefore, these Ni-Mn-Ti solid-solid PCMs are a robust candidate for efficient, compact and endurable high-temperature thermal energy storage applications. Our in-situ neutron diffraction experiment reveals a large unit cell volume change (2.49%) across phase transition and good geometric compatibility between the transforming phases, accounting for the large latent heat and superior thermal cyclability, respectively. This work opens a new avenue for designing advanced high-performance solid-state thermal energy storage materials.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) can store thermal energy as latent heat through phase transitions. PCMs using the solid-liquid phase transition offer high 100–300 J g−1 enthalpy at constant temperature. However, pure compounds suffer from leakage, incongruent melting and crystallization, phase separation, and supercooling, which limit their heat storage capacity and reliability during multiple heating-cooling cycles. An appropriate approach to mitigating these drawbacks is the construction of composites as shape-stabilized phase change materials which retain their macroscopic solid shape even at temperatures above the melting point of the active heat storage compound. Shape-stabilized materials can be obtained by PCMs impregnation into porous matrices. Porous silica nanomaterials are promising matrices due to their high porosity and adsorption capacity, chemical and thermal stability and possibility of changing their structure through chemical synthesis. This review offers a first in-depth look at the various methods for obtaining composite PCMs using porous silica nanomaterials, their properties, and applications. The synthesis and properties of porous silica composites are presented based on the main classes of compounds which can act as heat storage materials (paraffins, fatty acids, polymers, small organic molecules, hydrated salts, molten salts and metals). The physico-chemical phenomena arising from the nanoconfinement of phase change materials into the silica pores are discussed from both theoretical and practical standpoints. The lessons learned so far in designing efficient composite PCMs using porous silica matrices are presented, as well as the future perspectives on improving the heat storage materials.

Fabrication, Characterization and Thermo-Physical Properties of Micro- and Nano- Scaled Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract:Latent heat storage is one of the most efficient ways of storing thermal energy. Organic phase change materials are latent heat storage materials and they have been widely used as suitable materials for thermal energy storage applications due to their high latent heat and small temperature difference between storing and releasing heat. In this thesis, micro- and nano- scaled phase change materials were fabricated for thermal energy storage. A novel microencapsulated phase change material slurry (MPCS) was introduced by dispersing microencapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs) into water with an amount of surfactants and its thermal and rheological properties were also investigated. The results showed that MPCS fabricated in the current research are suitable for potential application as heat transfer media in the thermal energy storage. A new methodology was proposed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of MPCSs. Experiments were carried out in laminar, transition and turbulent flow for MPCSs in a circular tube under constant heat flux, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that in comparison to water as a heat transfer fluid at the same flow rate, the heat transfer of 10 wt. % MPCS could be enhanced by 10 % in transition flow condition while the PCM particles were in solid/liquid state, and the heat transfer of 5 wt. % MPCS could be enhanced by 21.9 % and 19.2 % in turbulent flow condition while the PCMs are in solid and solid/liquid states, respectively. Nevertheless, the heat transfer enhancement depends on the combination factors, including concentration of the slurry and flow rate of the slurry. A novel heat transfer fluid containing microencapsulated phase change material and multi-walled carbon nanotubes was prepared. The results showed that addition of MWCNTs to microencapsulated phase change material slurry can effectively improve the thermal conductivity of suspensions and it is also found that a blend of 10 wt. % MEPCM and 1 wt. % MWCNTs suspension can achieve the best thermal performance and stability among other blends in the experiment. A novel nanocapsule containing n-octadecane with an average 50 nm thick shell of poly (ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA), and with a core/shell weight ratio of 80/20 was synthesized by direct miniemulsion method. The results showed that PEMA/octadecane nanocapsule had good thermo-physical properties and had much higher encapsulation ratio (89.5%) and encapsulation efficiency (88.9%). For the first time, a novel PCM nanoparticle suspension (nano-PCS) was synthesized by direct miniemulsion method for thermal energy system application. It was found that the nano-PCSs had good thermo-physical properties and durability. All nano-PCSs presented narrow size distribution and stable particles. In comparison to the convectional PCM emulsion and MPCS, the nano-PCS tends to be more stable and is much easier and cheaper to fabricate in terms of the method and materials used, however, the heat transfer characteristics of the nano-PCS require further experimental investigation

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) are extensively used in passive thermal management and heat storage owing to their high latent heats near phase change temperatures. However, low thermal conductivity and leakage are two persistent bottlenecks in applications of PCMs. In this study, a new absorption-polymerization method is proposed to prepare phase change composites (PCCs) with both high thermal conductivity, high enthalpy, high encapsulation ratio, and leakage-proof property. The PCCs are synthesized in two steps: (1) absorption: n-hexadecane (C16) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) are absorbed into expanded graphite (EG) network; (2) polymerization: the absorbed MMA is subsequently polymerized to encapsulate C16 and form core-shell microcapsules in the EG networks. The PCCs exhibit latent heats of 170–200 J/g, encapsulation ratios of 72–85%, and thermal conductivities of 0.8–3.9 W/(m·K). In addition, the PCCs exhibit good dynamic response and long-term cycle stability. The absorption-polymerization process is an efficient and cost-effective method of synthesizing high-performance PCCs, which is promising for various heat-related applications, such as heat collection for renewable energy, energy conservation in buildings, and thermal protection of electronic equipment.

Abstract:Phase change heat storage has gained a lot of interest lately due to its high energy storage density. However, during the phase shift process, Phase Change Materials (PCMs) experience issues such as low thermal conductivity, stability, leaking, and low energy-storing capacity. Materials that mimic or derive from nature can effectively offset the shortcomings attributed. This work presents a methodical overview of the synthesis, thermo-physical properties, comparison and Thermal Energy Storage (TES) applications of bio-derived and biomimetic composite PCMs (BD/BM-CPCMs). Several studies have observed increase in thermal conductivity up to 950–1250 % for BD/BM-CPCMs, as well as great thermal stability with no matrix leakage at an average temperature of 150–250 °C. These types of composites have a relative enthalpy efficiency of up to 98.1 % and can endure 200–1000 heating-cooling cycles on average. Additionally, enviro-economic aspects, numerical approaches to heat transfer during phase change and multivariate and multi-objective optimizations from a technical, financial and environmental standpoint using machine learning techniques with underlying scopes of BD/BM-CPCM are presented. It is necessary to fabricate adaptable BD/BM-CPCM for multifunctional energy harvesting and storage in future. With regard to the advancement in substance functionalism, it is necessary to show and research the use of bio-derived composite with innovative effects like versatility, light to thermal conversion, electro-thermal conversion, and anti-bacterial qualities in real-world systems.

Abstract:Researchers have developed advanced energy storage techniques in response to the depletion of energy resources and the escalation of environmental problems caused by increasing population and technological advancements. One of the most promising methods to overcome such issues is the latent heat thermal energy storage (TES) method, which employs phase change materials (PCMs). TES using PCMs are an important category of novel materials that significantly contribute to the efficient use and conservation of solar energy and wasted heat. This work presents a new family of PCMs based on ionic liquid (IL) tris(2-hydroxyethylammonium) formate and fatty acids for the first time that operate in the temperature range of 50–150 °C and offer a safe and inexpensive capacity. Good chemical and thermal stability, low flammability, and low volatility along with the potential to tune chemical and phase properties provide an inherent "green" property for ILs that is well suited to PCMs. Using PCM3, tris(2-hydroxyethylammonium) formate/stearic acid, we demonstrate effective latent heat 246 J·g −1 . The results of differential scanning calorimetry analysis show that the PCM2 tris(2-hydroxyethylammonium) formate/palmitic acid has a higher heat capacity 8.194 J·g −1 ·K −1 at the melting point than the other two PCMs due to its small alkyl chain. Thermal stability analyses show the maximum stability (98 %) for PCM3. Additionally, based on the structure of these PCMs, this study explores the molecular basis for the high thermal energy storage capacity of these materials and highlights the significance of hydrogen bonds in PCM performance. Using simple, cost-effective materials, this method gets around the complexity and expense of composite PCMs. We present design recommendations for implementing our approach in the management of thermal energy storage applications.

Abstract:Conventional polymeric solid-solid phase change materials (SSPCMs) have garnered significant attention in the development of state-of-the-art latent heat storage (LHS) systems. However, the industrial application of polymeric SSPCMs is compromised by inferior mechanical properties and intrinsic low thermal conductivity. In addition, they are unable to be recycled and self-healed due to permanently cross-linked structures. In this study, a series of healable and recyclable supramolecular SSPCMs (PEG4K-Bx-PEG6K), possessing robust tensile strength (-22.90 MPa), excellent strain-at-break (-733.62 %), and high toughness (-120.05 MJ/m3), are designed and developed by incorporating dynamic boroxines and hydrogen bonds. Because of the reversibility of dynamic boroxines and hydrogen bonds, the PEG4K-Bx-PEG6K was able to be healable and conveniently processed into packaging bag. More importantly, the PEG4K-Bx-PEG6K also possessed high thermal storage capacity (98.03 J/g), and excellent thermal shape memory capability. To achieve efficient heat transfer, an orientated solar thermal composite with high thermal conductivity was fabricated by compression-induced repetitive stacking of oriented graphene nanosheets (GNs) layers in PEG4K-Bx-PEG6K. Thanks to the efficient heat conduction of oriented GNs layers in the composite, the directional thermal conductivity of composite was up to 3.639 W/mK at 5 wt% loading of GNs. Combining the above excellent heat conduction, the solar thermal composite developed in this work offered efficient solar thermal conversion, fast transportation and storage of the harvested thermal energy.

Abstract:Porous carbon network-based phase change composites have been widely used in energy storage and thermal management related fields. At present, the demand of energy crisis for photothermal energy storage and the prevention and management of thermal abuse of electronic equipment constantly promote the development of carbon-based composite phase change materials (PCMs). Therefore, a series of new composite materials filled with PCMs and polyethylene glycol (PEG) and added with flame-retardant magnesium hydroxide were developed, which makes the composites show certain flame-retardant ability in high-temperature environments. The results show that the thermal conductivity increases from 0.25 to 0.94 W/m·K, and the latent heat of phase change remains at 142.7 J/g. In addition, due to the capillary effect caused by the synergistic effect of multi-pore carbon (MPC) structure and cellulose macromolecular chain, the composite material has good shape stability, which effectively prevents the leakage behavior of PCMs during solid-liquid phase change. Moreover, the absorbance of the composite material can reach 1.28 L/(g cm) in the ultraviolet-visible light range of 200 nm- 800 nm, and its photothermal conversion efficiency can reach 90.8%. Therefore, this material has a broad application prospect in the thermal management of electronic equipment and photothermal energy storage devices.

Abstract:Thermal energy storage (TES) and harvesting is an effective technique for optimum building thermal management. Phase-change materials (PCMs) are commonly used for TES applications but are troubled by their degraded thermal conductivity. Recent research progress in latent heat energy storage using PCMs and nano additives provides a viable solution for solar TES. A series of hybrid nano-enhanced phase change materials (HNePCMs) were prepared via two-step synthesis. Hybrid graphene–silver nanofillers were dispersed in commercial paraffin (melting point 25 °C) under different dispersion rates (0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%). Different characterization techniques, e.g., FESEM, FT-IR, UV-VIS, TGA, XRD, DSC, and Tempos, were used in material characterization. A maximum enhancement of 6.7% in latent heat and 5% in heat storage efficiency was noted for nanocomposites with 0.3 wt% of additives. The nanocomposite with 0.3 Wt% showed great potential in shielding UV rays and showed a reduction of 6.5% in bandgap energy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of samples was boosted by a maximum of 90% (from 0.2 W/mK-0.39 W/mK) with 0.3 wt% dispersion of graphene–silver nanofillers. The thermophysical characterization results establish that the synthesized paraffin/graphene–silver hybrid nanocomposites are well suited for building thermal management.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) are an important class of innovative materials that considerably contribute to the effective use and conservation of solar energy and wasted heat in thermal energy storage systems (TES). The performance of TES can be improved by using environmentally friendly PCMs called ionic liquids (ILs) based on ethanolamines and fatty acids. The 2-hydroxyethylammonium, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium, and tris(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium palmitate ILs, which function is in the temperature range of 30–100 °C and provide a safe and affordable capacity, are introduced in this study for the first time as PCMs. PCMs' chemical composition and microstructure were examined using fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. DSC was used to evaluate the ILs' latent heat of fusion and specific heat capacity, while TGA was used to establish their thermal stability. Finally, a home-made device with a PCMs (synthesized ILs) container cell and a commercial thermoelectric generator device to record the real-time voltage (V) was used to convert thermal energy into electrical energy.

Abstract:Due to their high latent heat capacity near the phase change temperature, phase change materials (PCMs) have been extensively employed in passive thermal management and energy storage. Low thermal conductivity and leakage are, nevertheless, two ongoing limitations in PCMs thermal applications. In this work, a novel absorption polymerization process was carried out to prepare poly(methyl methacrylate)/expanded graphite/n-octanoic acid (PMMA/EG/OA) phase change composites (PCCs) having high thermal conductivity, enthalpy, encapsulation efficiency, as well as leakproofness. The PMMA/EG/OA PCCs are prepared in a two-step process: absorption of OA and methyl methacrylate (MMA) into the EG networks; and subsequent polymerization of MMA to cover the EG absorbed OA. The PCCs exhibit a latent heat capacity greater than 110 J/g, an encapsulation efficiency of approximately 100 %, and a thermal conductivity of 0.75–3.58 W/(m·K) at EG loadings of 6–15 wt%. Moreover, the PCCs display outstanding dynamical responsiveness and prolonged cycling reliability. Absorption polymerization is an efficient and profitable approach for producing high-performing PCCs that can be used for a variety of thermal-related areas, including thermal harvesting for renewable energy, building energy conservation, as well as thermal management of electrical devices.

Cadmium Sulfide—Reinforced Double-Shell Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials for Advanced Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used to improve energy utilization efficiency due to their high energy storage capacity. In this study, double-shell microencapsulated PCMs were constructed to resolve the liquid leakage issue and low thermal conductivity of organic PCMs, which also possess high thermal stability and multifunctionality. We used assembly to construct an inorganic–organic double shell for microencapsulate PCMs, which possessed the unprecedented synergetic properties of a cadmium sulfide (CdS) shell and melamine–formaldehyde polymeric shell. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the well-designed double-shell structure of the microcapsules, and the CdS was successfully assembled as the second shell on the surface of the polymer shell. The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) showed that the double-shell microcapsules had a high enthalpy of 114.58 J/g, which indicated almost no changes after experiencing 100 thermal cycles, indicating good thermal reliability. The microcapsules also showed good shape stability and antileakage performance, which displayed no shape change and leakage after heating at 60 °C for 30 min. In addition, the photothermal conversion efficiency of the double-shell microcapsules reached 91.3%. Thus, this study may promote the development of microencapsulated PCMs with multifunctionality, offering considerable application prospects in intelligent temperature management for smart textiles and wearable electronic devices in combination with their solar thermal energy conversion and storage performance.
