Abstract:Precisely regulating the coordination microenvironment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) to achieve enhanced reactivity is significant and desired but still in its infancy. Herein, a coordination-tuned and pyrolysis-free strategy is reported for the fabrication of a Fenton-like SAC containing the axial five-coordinated configuration (Fe–N5). The N species on the N-doped graphene act as anchoring points for iron phthalocyanine (a typical Fe–N4 complex) to obtain isolated Fe–N5 sites, which significantly modulates the electronic state of Fe atoms and lowers the H2O2 activation barrier for •OH production. Moreover, the enriched pyridinic N serve as contaminant adsorption sites shortening •OH diffusion distance, establishing a dual-site reaction mechanism with Fe–N5 sites. As such, the Fe–N5 catalyst exhibits exceptional Fenton activity towards catalytic oxidation of phenol (k = 0.180 min−1). Our work unravels the dependence of Fenton activity on the single-atom coordination environment and provides a platform for precise engineering of SACs.
Cu1.94S Nanocrystal Superstructure for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Ordered nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S nano superstructure are constructed and provide notably improved catalytic H2 evolution reaction performance at 2482.00 µmol g‒1 h‒1. Careful selection of metal organic framework precursors with long range metal ion alignments impact performance, as well-ordered superstructures give rise to uniform electromagnetic fields and organized interparticle interactions that facilitate charge carrier transport. These close packed nanoparticles with negatively charged carboxylate surfaces inhibit large [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 and triethanolamine transport outwards, but allow smaller H2O particles to enter superstructure interiors. In this case, separation happens not only between electrons and holes but also between reduction and oxidation zones. Abundant dangling bonds also form from the complex nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S structure and bulk aggregation of close packed Cu1.94S, up to hundreds of nanometers, provides abundant catalytic active sites.
Facile Synthesis of CuFe2O4 Crystals Efficient for Water Oxidation and H2O2 Reduction

Abstract:Synthesis of a robust and bifunctional catalyst with earth-abundant element efficient for electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation is crucial in electrocatalytic energy conversion and storage. Herein we show that a facile method to synthesize CuFe2O4 crystals with octahedral shape as a bifunctional catalyst efficient for water oxidation and H2O2 reduction. These as-obtained CuFe2O4 catalysts exhibited high-performance for water oxidation (2.2 times current density higher than that of commercial RuO2), lower Tafel slope (similar to 50 mV dec(-1)), larger anodic current density and much enhanced electrochemical durability. Besides, the resulted CuFe2O4 catalyst was also efficient for electrocatalytic H2O2 reduction, it shows 5-fold increment of current density in the presence of 5 mM H2O2, high sensitivity and much improved stability. The cost-effective synthesis route holds great promise for the controllable synthesis of nanostructured spinel, and is expected to show promising applications in the generation of renewable energy. Abstract:Developing heterogeneous catalysts with atomically dispersed active sites is vital to boost peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for Fenton-like activity, but how to controllably adjust the electronic configuration of metal centers to further improve the activation kinetics still remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a systematic investigation into heteroatom-doped engineering for tuning the electronic structure of Cu-N4 sites by integrating electron-deficient boron (B) or electron-rich phosphorus (P) heteroatoms into carbon substrate for PMS activation. The electron-depleted Cu-N4/C-B is found to exhibit the most active oxidation capacity among the prepared Cu-N4 single-atom catalysts, which is at the top rankings of the Cu-based catalysts and is superior to most of the state-of-the-art heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts. Conversely, the electron-enriched Cu-N4/C-P induces a decrease in PMS activation. Both experimental results and theoretical simulations unravel that the long-range interaction with B atoms decreases the electronic density of Cu active sites and down-shifts the d-band center, and thereby optimizes the adsorption energy for PMS activation. This study provides an approach to finely control the electronic structure of Cu-N4 sites at the atomic level and is expected to guide the design of smart Fenton-like catalysts.
Stable Cuprous Active Sites in Cu+-graphitic Carbon Nitride: Structure Analysis and Performance in Fenton-like Reactions.

Abstract:Cu+-based catalysts have great potential in Fenton reactions under neutral pH conditions. However, cuprous (Cu+) materials are instable in the aqueous environment. Herein, using the cheap precursors, a Cu+-graphitic carbon nitride complex with an efficient Fenton-like activity as well as relative stability was prepared. 99.2% removal of Rhodamine B with an initial concentration of 50 mg/L could be attained in 1 h. Several experimental techniques are employed to study the structure of this catalyst. Results show that after the addition of Cu, the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) network is partially destroyed and the reduced Cu is therefore firmly embedded in the fragmentary g-C3N4 sheet. The X-ray adsorption fine spectra illustrates the chemical state and the local structure of the bonded Cu. Due to the strong orbital hybridization, Cu+ could be stabilized through the coordination with pyridinic N. A two-coordinate structure with a bond length of 1.90 Å is confirmed and this structure is not changed even after the Fenton-like reaction. Singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (HO•) are produced by the rapid interaction of bonded Cu+ with H2O2 and the resulting Cu2+ can be easily reduced to its cuprous state due to its structure stability, leading to its high activity in the Fenton-like reaction.
Facilitation of Fenton‐Like Reaction of Copper‐Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon‐Based Nanocatalysts by Enhancing Hydroxyl Adsorption on Single‐Atom Cu‐NxC4‐x Sites

Abstract:The pH effect of the Fenton‐like reaction catalyzed by Cu‐NC nanocatalysts is verified through experiments and theory. A strategy is proposed to facilitate the Fenton‐like reaction by enhancing the adsorption strength of hydroxyl radicals on Cu sites. The optimal Fenton‐like catalysts are theoretically identified as Cu‐NCs with Cu‐N2C2 sites, a finding validated by the synthesis of Cu‐doped carbon dots. Copper‐nitrogen‐doped carbon‐based nanocatalysts (Cu‐NCs), containing atomically dispersed Cu‐NxC4‐x sites, are efficient in boosting the Fenton‐like reaction. However, the mechanisms of the Fenton‐like reaction, including the pH effect on the products and the effect of the coordination environment on catalytic activity, remain controversial, restricting the development of Cu‐NCs. Cu‐NCs are experimentally synthesized with Cu‐N4 sites and prove that the Fenton‐like reaction generates mainly hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the acidic but ·OH and superoxide radicals (·O2−) in the neutral. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the catalytic activity of Cu‐NCs in the Fenton‐like reaction is associated with the adsorption strength of ·OH at the Cu site. Further investigation of the effect of the coordination environment of Cu‐NCs indicates that the Cu‐N2C2 site, which can enhance the ·OH adsorption strength, is an ideal catalyst site for the Fenton‐like reaction. These results open the way to facilitating the catalytic activity of Cu‐NCs in the Fenton‐like reaction.

Abstract:Catalysts with both metal single atoms and nanoclusters have drawn great attention due to their distinctive catalytic activity and selectivity. Herein, Cu single atoms and Cu nanoclusters are homogeneously dispersed on a porous N-doped carbon framework (Cu 1 Cu n @CN) via an encapsulation pyrolysis strategy. In the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), around 100% yield of DFF is achieved over the as-synthesized Cu 1 Cu n @CN under air atmosphere and mild reaction conditions. Density function theory studies demonstrate that the strong interaction between the CuN and Cu cluster sites contributes to the up-shift of the d-orbital center of Cu in Cu 1 Cu n @CN and the Cu clusters can induce obvious electron redistribution around the CuN active center, which significantly improves the capability in substrate adsorption and activation. This work might provide new insights into the design and construction of catalysts with both metal single atoms and nanoclusters and investigations on their synergistic interactions for advanced catalysis applications.

Abstract:The activity of single-atom catalysts in peroxymonosulfate activation process is bound up with the local electronic state of metal center. However, the large electronegativity of N atoms in Metal-N4 restricts the electron transfer between center metal atom and peroxymonosulfate. Herein, we constructed Fe-SN-C catalyst by incorporating S atom in the first coordination sphere of Fe single-atom site (Fe-S1N3) for Fenton-like catalysis. The Fe-SN-C with a low valent Fe is found to exhibit excellent catalytic activity for bisphenol A degradation, and the corresponding rate constant reaches 0.405 min-1, 11.9-fold higher than the original Fe-N-C. Besides, the Fe-SN-C/PMS system exhibits ideal catalytic stability under the effect of wide pH range and background substrates by the fast generation of high-valent Fe species. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the dual coordination of S and N atoms notably increases the local electron density of Fe atoms and electron filling in eg orbital, causing a d band center shifting close to the fermi level and thereby optimizes the activation energy for peroxymonosulfate decomposition via Fe 3d-O 2p orbital interaction. This work provides further development of promising SACs for the efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate based on direct regulation of the coordination environment of active center metal atoms.
Synthesis of 2H/fcc-Heterophase AuCu Nanostructures for Highly Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction at Industrial Current Densities

Abstract:Structural engineering of nanomaterials offers a promising way for developing high-performance catalysts toward catalysis. However, the delicate modulation of thermodynamically unfavorable nanostructures with unconventional phases still remains a challenge. Here, the synthesis of hierarchical AuCu nanostructures is reported with hexagonal close-packed (2H-type)/face-centered cubic (fcc) heterophase, high-index facets, planar defects (e.g., stacking faults, twin boundaries, and grain boundaries), and tunable Cu content. The obtained 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 hierarchical nanosheets exhibit excellent performance for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to produce CO, outperforming the 2H/fcc Au91 Cu9 and fcc Au99 Cu1 . The experimental results, especially those obtained by in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, suggest that the enhanced catalytic performance of 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 arises from the unconventional 2H/fcc heterophase, high-index facets, planar defects, and appropriate alloying of Cu. Impressively, the 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 shows CO Faradaic efficiencies of 96.6% and 92.6% at industrial current densities of 300 and 500 mA cm-2 , respectively, as well as good durability, placing it among the best CO2 reduction electrocatalysts for CO production. The atomically structural regulation based on phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) provides an avenue for the rational design and preparation of high-performance electrocatalysts for various catalytic applications.

Abstract:The control of single metal atomic sites has been extensively studied in the field of single atom catalysts. By contrast, the precise control of the mesoporous structure in the matrix material, which directly correlates with mass diffusions and may play a dominant role in delivering industrially relevant reaction rates, has been overlooked. Here we report a general method for the synthesis of a single atom catalyst with control of the atomic structure of the single atomic site as well as the mesoporous structure of the carbon support for optimized catalytic performance. Various combinations of metal centres (Ni, Co, Mn, Zn, Cu, Sc and Fe) and mass diffusion channels in two dimensions and three dimensions were achieved. Using CO 2 reduction to CO as an example, our Ni single atom catalyst with three-dimensional diffusion channels delivered a practical current of 350 mA cm −2 while maintaining a 93% CO Faradaic efficiency, representing a sixfold improvement in turnover frequency compared to two-dimensional counterparts.

Abstract:The regulation of coordination number of metal single-atom (SA) sites is important and effective to tailor their catalytic performances. Herein, we report a novel defect-induced strategy for the fabrication of Cu SAs with unsaturated coordination configurations (Cu 1 C 2 ). During the synthesis, polyvinyl pyrrolidone is employed to stabilize atomic Cu nodes and generate pores in adjacent areas. Systematical characterizations indicate the atomic distribution of Cu on C 2 sites at the edge of pores in carbon support. The unsaturated coordination configurations and edge effect of the Cu 1 C 2 moieties endow it with asymmetric geometry and shortened Cu-C bond length, leading to polarized charge distributions and up-shifted total density of states towards the Fermi level, which could facilitate O 2 activation and lower oxidative coupling barriers. Impressively, Cu 1 C 2 @C exhibits superior catalytic performances in the oxidative coupling of furfural with isopropanol into 4-(2-furyl)-buten-2-one (a typical C8 biofuel intermediate), outperforming the Cu 1 C 4 @C counterpart.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received much attention in the realm of energy and catalytic conversion due to their maximum atomic efficiency. Herein, we report a cascade anchoring strategy for the preparation of a Cu-S1O2 species of single-atom catalyst attached to a carbon carrier containing P and S (Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS) with a content of 12.4 wt%. Over the Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS catalyst, the conversion of 95.8% and selectivity of 87.2% for acetylene hydration could still be achieved at 70 h (T = 200°C, GHSV(C2H2) = 90 h-1 and VH2O/VC2H2 = 4). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests reveal that the Cu atoms of Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS are predominantly coordinated in a trinary manner (Cu-S1O2). Based on high-resolution aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF-STEM), it is demonstrated that the Cu single-atom sites are highly dispersed in Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS. It is evident from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS has a two-dimensional layered structure. The specific structure of the active site Cu is primarily attributed to the coordination of S and O atoms, resulting in its superior stability for acetylene hydration towards the synthesis of acetaldehyde. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the formation of the Cu-S1O2 site facilitates the activation of acetylene, which is a pivotal step in the acetylene hydration process and considered as the rate-determining step. This article not only introduces an innovative strategy in the synthesis of Cu SACs but also represents a significant breakthrough in the stability of Cu SACs in acetylene hydration.

Abstract:Highly efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold great potential for promoting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to facilitate organic pollutant degradation but precisely regulating and enhancing their catalytic efficiency remains a challenge. Here, single Cu atom catalysts anchored on a series of ketoenamine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were developed as PMS activators via a facile dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and wet chemical method. Based on the systematic engineering of photoelectric structures at the molecular level, the charge distribution was precisely regulated by introducing different functional groups (Cu@TpPa-X, where X= -(CH 3 ) 2 , -H, -CN). Among the obtained materials, Cu@TpPa-(CH 3 ) 2 possesses the best photocatalytic capability, and the mineralization (90%) of carbamazepine (CBZ) and the reaction rate constant (0.322 min −1 ) are comparable to those of the most advanced photocatalysts. Experiments and calculations demonstrate that the introduction of individual metal atoms increases the electron density at the active centre, and electron-donating groups accelerate the transfer of photogenerated carriers and improve the PMS adsorption to the material, which significantly improves the overall oxidation and mineralization kinetics. This work pioneers a novel approach for tailoring high-efficiency COF-based SACs, thus broadening their potential applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Exploitation of catalysts with multi-active sites is very important for enhancing catalytic performance. 0D/2D hybrids, especially quantum dots (QDs)/nanosheets (NSs), have attracted increasing attentions for advanced oxidation processes due to high charge mobility and more active sites. However, 0D/2D hybrids with multi-active sites still remain a great challenge. Herein, 0D Cu-Fe bi-metal oxide QDs/2D g-C3N4 (CNNSs) exhibiting superior advantages beyond single-metal 0D/2D counterparts was fabricated via a facile one-step synthesis strategy for photo-Fenton catalysis. The synergy of ultrafine Cu-Fe sites on CNNSs led to outstanding tetracycline removal efficiency over a wide pH range. Our experiments and DFT calculations clearly demonstrated that except for the fast charge separation and transfer, this synergy could achieve the optimal H2O2 adsorption-activation trade-off on Cu-Fe sites, while also modify tetracycline absorption, leading to multiple synergies of adsorption-catalytic degradation and photocatalysis-Fenton oxidation. This work provides new insights in developing multi-functional 0D/2D hybrids for environment and energy applications.

In-situ synthesis of N-doped biochar encapsulated Cu(0) nanoparticles with excellent Fenton-like catalytic performance and good environmental stability

Abstract:Low-valent transition metal catalysts show promising application in the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. However, the catalysts themselves are susceptible to be oxidized and easy to agglomerate, thus reducing the catalytic ability. Herein, a facile in-situ carbonization method is utilized to synthesize N-doped biochar encapsulated zero valent copper (Cu(0)) nanoparticles (Cu@N: C). The formed Cu(0) nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed in biochar. The carbon layers wrapped outside of Cu(0) nanoparticles can present the oxidation of Cu(0) to a certain extent. Therefore, the 12% Cu@N: C catalyst exhibits good environmental stability. The catalytic ability remains basically unchanged after directly exposing it to air for four months. In addition, the 12% Cu@N: C catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performances for the degradation of various organic pollutants at near neutral pH range (pH = 4.0 ∼ 8.0). Low valent copper (Cu(0)/Cu(I)) and pyridinic N both contribute to the excellent catalytic ability. Furthermore, the catalytic performances are less interfered in natural water matrices, and even obviously enhanced in sea water. Based on the experimental and characterization results, a possible catalytic mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:There is interest in metal single atom catalysts due to their remarkable activity and stability. However, the synthesis of metal single atom catalysts remains somewhat ad hoc, with no universal strategy yet reported that allows their generic synthesis. Herein, we report a universal synthetic strategy that allows the synthesis of transition metal single atom catalysts containing Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ru, Pt or combinations thereof. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy confirm that the transition metal atoms are uniformly dispersed over a carbon black support. The introduced synthetic method allows the production of carbon-supported metal single atom catalysts in large quantities (>1 kg scale) with high metal loadings. A Ni single atom catalyst exhibits outstanding activity for electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, achieving a 98.9% Faradaic efficiency at −1.2 V.
