Abstract:For the application of large titanium alloy blades in steam turbines, it is necessary to prepare blades with a titanium nitride coating thickness of >300 μm and a hardness of >500 HV 0.2 . Due to intermittent convection in the molten pool, the traditional form of laser gas nitriding (TF-LGN) tends to lead to a poor coating uniformity and a notable stress concentration, which ultimately results in crack generation. This research proposes, for the first time, the use of full-domain power modulation in laser gas nitriding (FDPM-LGN), which enables the fabrication of high-quality coatings that are ultra-thick, high hardness, crack-free, and exhibit excellent wear resistances. Through the combination of high-speed camera observations and analysis, it was found that during the FDPM-LGN process, continuous convection occurred in the nitriding molten pool. As a result, nitrogen transfer changed from short-range transfer to long-range transfer, resulting in a more uniform stress distribution and a more homogenous coating morphology. This promotes formation of the Ti 2 N phase and reduces the deformation capacity between the coating and the substrate. The obtained resulted showed that, with a thickness of 523.47 μm, a hardness of 760 HV 0.2 , and a wear resistance twice that of the substrate, this approach constitutes a novel method for the preparation of ultra-thick, crack-free, and high-quality coatings.
