Abstract:The anomaly cancellation is a basic property of the Standard Model, crucial for its consistence. We consider a lattice chiral gauge theory of massless Wilson fermions interacting with a non-compact massive U(1) field coupled with left and right handed fermions in four dimensions. We prove in the infinite volume limit, for weak coupling and inverse lattice step of the order of boson mass, that the anomaly vanishes up to subleading corrections and under the same condition as in the continuum. The proof is based on a combination of exact Renormalization Group, non perturbative decay bounds of correlations and lattice symmetries.

Abstract:It is generally believed that the 1+1D model for a single chiral fermion does not exist by itself alone on lattice. The obstruction to such a lattice realization is the failure to reproduce the quantum anomalies of a chiral fermion in continuum. The conventional way to escape is to associate the anomalous 1d system with a 2d bulk, which is in a topologically non-trivial state, as the boundary of the latter. In this paper, we propose a 1+1D chiral fermion model on 1d spatial lattice, standing alone — without being associated with a 2d bulk — with a simple non-Hermitian hopping Hamiltonian. We demonstrate, using various methods, that the model possesses the same chiral anomaly and gravitational anomaly as in continuum theory. Furthermore, with appropriate parameters, the low energy effective theory of the model remains a field theory for unitary chiral fermions. The essential reason for the success is that the usual "doubled" fermion mode with opposite chirality is rapidly damped out because of non-Hermicity of the Hamiltonian.

Abstract:Unconventional lattice fermions with high degeneracies that are not Weyl or Dirac fermions have attracted increased attention in recent years. In this paper, we consider pseudospin-1 Maxwell fermions and the (2 + 1)-dimensional parity anomaly, which are not constrained by the fermion doubling theorem. We derive the Hall conductivity of a single Maxwell fermion and explain how each Maxwell fermion has a quantized Hall conductance of e 2 / h . Parity is spontaneously broken in the effective theory of lattice Maxwell fermions interacting with an (auxiliary) U(1) gauge field, leading to an effective anomaly-induced Chern–Simons theory. An interesting observation about the parity anomaly is that the lattice Maxwell fermions are not constrained by the fermion doubling theorem, so a single Maxwell fermion can exist in a lattice. In addition, our work considers the quantum anomaly in odd-dimensional spinor space.

Abstract:Anomalies are the violation of classical symmetries due to quantum effects. New methods have recently allowed to establish their non‐renormalization in a number of cases, at a non‐perturbative level and in presence of a lattice. The issue is relevant in several problems ranging from the anomaly‐free construction of chiral lattice gauge theory under the anomaly cancellation condition to the universality properties observed in transport coefficients in condensed matter systems like Graphene, Hall insulators, or Weyl semimetals. Quantized axial charge of staggered fermions and the chiral anomaly

Abstract:In the 1+1D ultra-local lattice Hamiltonian for staggered fermions with a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, there are two conserved, integer-valued charges that flow in the continuum limit to the vector and axial charges of a massless Dirac fermion with a perturbative anomaly. Each of the two lattice charges generates an ordinary U(1) global symmetry that acts locally on operators and can be gauged individually. Interestingly, they do not commute on a finite lattice and generate the Onsager algebra, but their commutator goes to zero in the continuum limit. The chiral anomaly is matched by this non-abelian algebra, which is consistent with the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem. We further prove that the presence of these two conserved lattice charges forces the low-energy phase to be gapless, reminiscent of the consequence from perturbative anomalies of continuous global symmetries in continuum field theory. Upon bosonization, these two charges lead to two exact U(1) symmetries in the XX model that flow to the momentum and winding symmetries in the free boson conformal field theory.

By calculating explicitly the change of the effective action under chiral transformation, it is also found an arbitrariness in the solution of the chiral Schwinger model, which depends on a lattice regularization in continuum theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of trace anomaly for a chiral fermion. To find whether there exists a parity-odd term (Pontryagin term), we use a modified Breitenlohner-Maison-'t Hooft-Veltman regularization and Fujikawa's method by a new Dirac mass term to calculate the trace anomaly for a Weyl fermion coupled to an abelian gauge field and a gravity separately. We show once again that the trace anomaly of energy-momentum tensor for a chiral fermion has Pontryagin term.

Numerical Study of the Lattice Index Theorem Using Improved Cooling and Overlap Fermions

Abstract:We investigate the topological charge and the index theorem on finite lattices numerically. Using mean field improved gauge-field configurations we calculate the topological charge Q using the gluon field definition with O(a(4))-improved cooling and an O(a(4))-improved field strength tensor F-munu. We also calculate the index of the massless overlap fermion operator by directly measuring the differences between the numbers of zero modes with left- and right-handed chiralities. For sufficiently smooth field configurations we find that the gluon field definition of the topological charge is an integer to better than 1%, and furthermore that this agrees with the index of the overlap Dirac operator, i.e., the Atiyah-Singer index theorem is satisfied. This establishes a benchmark for reliability when calculating lattice quantities that are very sensitive to topology.

Abstract:In the presence of boundaries, the quantum anomalies acquire additional boundary terms. In odd dimensions the integrated conformal anomaly, for which the bulk contribution is known to be absent, is non-trivial due to the boundary terms. These terms became a subject of active study in the recent years. In the present paper we continue our previous study [1], [2] and compute explicitly the anomaly for fermions in dimensions $d=3, \ 4 \ $ and $5$. The calculation in dimension $5$ is new. It contains both contributions of the gravitational field and the gauge fields to the anomaly. In dimensions $d=3$ and $4$ we reproduce and clarify the derivation of the results available in the literature. Imposing the conformal invariant mixed boundary conditions for fermions in odd dimension $d$ we particularly pay attention to the necessity of choosing the doubling representation for gamma matrices. In this representation there exists a possibility to define chirality and thus address the question of the chiral anomaly. The anomaly is entirely due to terms defined on the boundary. They are calculated in the present paper in dimensions $d=3$ and $5$ due to both gravitational and gauge fields. To complete the picture we re-evaluate the chiral anomaly in $d=4$ dimensions and find a new boundary term that is supplementary to the well-known Pontryagin term.

Anomalous Magnetic Transport and Extra Quantum Oscillation in Semi-Metallic Photon-Like Fermion Gas

Abstract:In the absence of Lorentz symmetry, the pseudospin-1 counterpart of the Weyl fermion (feroton) with linear dispersions and an exact flat band can emerge in condensed matter systems. The flat band branch of the feroton is equivalent to the longitudinal photon in Maxwell theory, which is a redundant degree of freedom due to the emergent (fermionic) gauge symmetry. Upon coupling to an external magnetic field, the fermionic gauge symmetry is broken and the flat band ferotons become gapless excitations characterized by Landau level indices (n > 1). In the long wavelength limit, these gapless modes are of the opposite chirality to the chiral anomaly related zero Landau level, which leads to much more plentiful magnetic transport properties. To further explore the novel properties of these gapless modes, we investigate the quantum oscillation through a generalized Lieb lattice model. We find an extra oscillating behavior which indicates the existence of these exotic gapless modes. We collect known ab initio calculation data from the literature and discuss the possibility of realizing the semi-metallic feroton gas in real materials.
Non-Hermitian Lattice Fermions in 2D GNY Model

Abstract:We work the lattice fermions and non-Hermitian formulation in the 2D GNY model and demonstrate the numerical implementation for two flavors by the Hybrid Monte Carlo. Our approach has a notable advantage in dealing with chiral symmetry on a lattice by avoiding the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem, due to the non-symmetrized finite-difference operator. We restore the hypercubic symmetry by averaging over all possible orientations with the proper continuum limit. Our study is the first simulation for the interacting fermion formulated in a non-hermitian way. We compare the numerical solution with the one-loop resummation. The resummation results matches with the numerical solution in $\langle\phi\rangle$, $\langle\phi^2\rangle$, $\langle\mathrm{Tr}(\bar{\psi}_1\psi_1+\bar{\psi}_2\psi_2)/2\rangle$, and $\langle\mathrm{Tr}(\bar{\psi}_1\psi_1+\bar{\psi}_2\psi_2)\phi/2\rangle$. We also used the one-loop resummation to provide the RG flow and asymptotic safety in the 2D GNY model.

Abstract:We study 't Hooft anomalies of global symmetries in 1+1d lattice Hamiltonian systems. We consider anomalies in internal and lattice translation symmetries. We derive a microscopic formula for the "anomaly cocycle" using topological defects implementing twisted boundary conditions. The anomaly takes value in the cohomology group $H^3(G,U(1)) \times H^2(G,U(1))$. The first factor captures the anomaly in the internal symmetry group $G$, and the second factor corresponds to a generalized Lieb-Schultz-Mattis anomaly involving $G$ and lattice translation. We present a systematic procedure to gauge internal symmetries (that may not act on-site) on the lattice. We show that the anomaly cocycle is the obstruction to gauging the internal symmetry while preserving the lattice translation symmetry. As an application, we construct anomaly-free chiral lattice gauge theories. We demonstrate a one-to-one correspondence between (locality-preserving) symmetry operators and topological defects, which is essential for the results we prove. We also discuss the generalization to fermionic theories. Finally, we construct non-invertible lattice translation symmetries by gauging internal symmetries with a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis anomaly.

Extended quantum field theory, index theory and the parity anomaly

Abstract:We use techniques from functorial quantum field theory to provide a geometric description of the parity anomaly in fermionic systems coupled to background gauge and gravitational fields on odd-dimensional spacetimes. We give an explicit construction of a geometric cobordism bicategory which incorporates general background fields in a stack, and together with the theory of symmetric monoidal bicategories we use it to provide the concrete forms of invertible extended quantum field theories which capture anomalies in both the path integral and Hamiltonian frameworks. Specialising this situation by using the extension of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem to manifolds with corners due to Loya and Melrose, we obtain a new Hamiltonian perspective on the parity anomaly. We compute explicitly the 2-cocycle of the projective representation of the gauge symmetry on the quantum state space, which is defined in a parity-symmetric way by suitably augmenting the standard chiral fermionic Fock spaces with Lagrangian subspaces of zero modes of the Dirac Hamiltonian that naturally appear in the index theorem. We describe the significance of our constructions for the bulk-boundary correspondence in a large class of time-reversal invariant gauge-gravity symmetry-protected topological phases of quantum matter with gapless charged boundary fermions, including the standard topological insulator in 3+1 dimensions.

Ferromagnets, a New Anomaly, Instantons, and (noninvertible) Continuous Translations

Abstract:We discuss a large class of classical field theories with continuous translation symmetry. In the quantum theory, a new anomaly explicitly breaks this translation symmetry to a discrete symmetry. Furthermore, this discrete translation symmetry is extended by a $d-2$-form global symmetry. All these theories can be described as $U(1)$ gauge theories where Gauss law states that the system has nonzero charge density. Special cases of such systems can be phrased as theories with a compact phase space. Examples are ferromagnets and lattices in the lowest Landau level. In some cases, the broken continuous translation symmetry can be resurrected as a noninvertible symmetry. We clarify the relation between the discrete translation symmetry of the continuum theory and the discrete translation symmetry of an underlying lattice model. Our treatment unifies, clarifies, and extends earlier works on the same subject.

Bosonization and Anomaly Indicators of (2+1)-D Fermionic Topological Orders

Abstract:We provide a mathematical proposal for the anomaly indicators of symmetries of (2+1)-d fermionic topological orders, and work out the consequences of our proposal in several nontrivial examples. Our proposal is an invariant of a super modular tensor category with a fermionic group action, which gives a (3+1)-d topological field theory (TFT) that we conjecture to be invertible; the anomaly indicators are partition functions of this TFT on $4$-manifolds generating the corresponding twisted spin bordism group. Our construction relies on a bosonization construction due to Gaiotto-Kapustin and Tata-Kobayashi-Bulmash-Barkeshli, together with a ``bosonization conjecture'' which we explain in detail. In the second half of the paper, we discuss several examples of our invariants relevant to condensed-matter physics. The most important example we consider is $\mathbb{Z}/4^T\times \mathbb{Z}/2^f$ time-reversal symmetry with symmetry algebra $\mathcal T^2 = (-1)^FC$, which many fermionic topological orders enjoy, including the $\mathrm{U}(1)_5$ spin Chern-Simons theory. Using newly developed tools involving the Smith long exact sequence, we calculate the cobordism group that classifies its anomaly, present the generating manifold, and calculate the partition function on the generating manifold which serves as our anomaly indicator. Our approach allows us to reproduce anomaly indicators known in the literature with simpler proofs, including $\mathbb{Z}/4^{Tf}$ time-reversal symmetry with symmetry algebra $\mathcal T^2 = (-1)^F$, and other symmetry groups in the 10-fold way involving Lie group symmetries.
