Abstract:The solid-on-solid (SOS) model of an interface separating two phases is exactly soluble in two dimensions (d=2) when the interface becomes a one-dimensional string. The exact solution in terms of the transfer matrix is recalled and the density-density correlation function $H(z_1,z_2;\Delta x)$ together with its projections, is computed. It is demonstrated that the shape fluctuations follow the (extended) capillary-wave theory expression $S(q)=kT/(D+\gamma q^2 +\kappa q^4) $ for sufficiently small wave vectors $q$. We find $\kappa$ {\it negative}, $\kappa <0$ . At $q=2\pi$ there is a strong nearest-neighbor peak. Both these results confirm the earlier findings as established in simulations in d=3 and in continuous space, but now in an exactly soluble lattice model.

Abstract:The formal sharp-interface asymptotics in a degenerate Cahn-Hilliard model for viscoelastic phase separation with cross-diffusive coupling to a bulk stress variable are shown to lead to non-local lower-order counterparts of the classical surface diffusion flow. The diffuse-interface model is a variant of the Zhou-Zhang-E model and has an Onsager gradient-flow structure with a rank-deficient mobility matrix reflecting the ODE character of stress relaxation. In the case of constant coupling, we find that the evolution of the zero level set of the order parameter approximates the so-called intermediate surface diffusion flow. For non-constant coupling functions monotonically connecting the two phases, our asymptotic analysis leads to a family of third order whose propagation operator behaves like the square root of the minus Laplace-Beltrami operator at leading order. In this case, the normal velocity of the moving sharp interface arises as the Lagrange multiplier in a constrained elliptic equation, which is at the core of our derivation. The constrained elliptic problem can be solved rigorously by a variational argument, and is shown to encode the gradient structure of the effective geometric evolution law. The asymptotics are presented for deep quench, an intermediate free boundary problem based on the double-obstacle potential.

Passenger-based predictive modeling of airline no-show rates

Abstract:Airlines routinely overbook flights based on the expectation that some fraction of booked passengers will not show for each flight. Accurate forecasts of the expected number of no-shows for each flight can increase airline revenue by reducing the number of spoiled seats (empty seats that might otherwise have been sold) and the number of involuntary denied boardings at the departure gate. Conventional no-show forecasting methods typically average the no-show rates of historically similar flights, without the use of passenger-specific information.We develop two classes of models to predict cabin-level no-show rates using specific information on the individual passengers booked on each flight. The first of these models computes the no-show probability for each passenger, using both the cabin-level historical forecast and the extracted passenger features as explanatory variables. This passenger-level model is implemented using three different predictive methods: a C4.5 decision-tree, a segmented Naive Bayes algorithm, and a new aggregation method for an ensemble of probabilistic models. The second cabin-level model is formulated using the desired cabin-level no-show rate as the response variable. Inputs to this model include the predicted cabin-level no-show rates derived from the various passenger-level models, as well as simple statistics of the features of the cabin passenger population. The cabin-level model is implemented using either linear regression, or as a direct probability model with explicit incorporation of the cabin-level no-show rates derived from the passenger-level model outputs.The new passenger-based models are compared to a conventional historical model, using train and evaluation data sets taken from over 1 million passenger name records. Standard metrics such as lift curves and mean-square cabin-level errors establish the improved accuracy of the passenger-based models over the historical model. All models are also evaluated using a simple revenue model, and it is shown that the cabin-level passenger-based model can produce between 0.4% and 3.2% revenue gain over the conventional model, depending on the revenue-model parameters.

Abstract:The statistical mechanics of equilibrium interfaces has been well-established for over a half century. In the last decade, a wealth of observations have made increasingly clear that a new perspective is required to describe interfaces arbitrarily far from equilibrium. In this work, beginning from microscopic particle dynamics that break time-reversal symmetry, we systematically derive the interfacial dynamics of coexisting motility-induced phases. Doing so allows us to identify the athermal energy scale that excites interfacial fluctuations and the nonequilibrium surface tension that resists these excitations. Our theory identifies that, in contrast to equilibrium fluids, this active surface tension contains contributions arising from nonconservative forces which act to suppress interfacial fluctuations and, crucially, is distinct from the mechanical surface tension of Kirkwood and Buff. We find that the interfacial stiffness scales linearly with the intrinsic persistence length of the constituent active particle trajectories, in agreement with simulation data. We demonstrate that at wavelengths much larger than the persistence length, the interface obeys surface area minimizing Boltzmann statistics with our derived nonequilibrium interfacial stiffness playing an identical role to that of equilibrium systems.

Abstract:The localized low-energy interfacial excitations, or Nambu-Goldstone modes, of phase-segregated binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated analytically by means of a double-parabola approximation (DPA) to the Lagrangian density in Gross-Pitaevskii theory for a system in a uniform potential. Within this model analytic expressions are obtained for the excitations underlying capillary waves or "ripplons" for arbitrary strength $K\,(>1)$ of the phase segregation. The dispersion relation $\omega \propto k^{3/2}$ is derived directly from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in limit that the wavelength $2\pi/k$ is much larger than the healing length $\xi $. The proportionality constant in the dispersion relation provides the static interfacial tension. A correction term in $\omega (k)$ of order $k^{5/2}$ is calculated analytically, entailing a finite-wavelength correction factor $(1+\frac{\sqrt{K-1} \,k\xi}{4\sqrt{2}\,(\sqrt{2}+\sqrt{K-1})})$. This prediction may be tested experimentally using (quasi-)uniform optical-box traps. Explicit expressions are obtained for the structural deformation of the interface due to the passing of the capillary wave. It is found that the amplitude of the wave is enhanced by an amount that is quadratic in the ratio of the phase velocity $\omega/k$ to the sound velocity $c$. For generic asymmetric mixtures consisting of condensates with unequal healing lengths an additional modulation is predicted of the common value of the condensate densities at the interface.

Abstract:Density-functional theory is used to investigate the phase behavior of colloidal binary hard-platelet and hard-rod fluids near a single hard wall or confined in a slit pore. The Zwanzig model, in which the orientations of the particles of rectangular shape are restricted to three orthogonal orientations, is analyzed by numerical minimization of the grand potential functional. The density and orientational profiles as well as the surface contributions to the grand potential are determined. The calculations exhibit a wall-induced continuous surface transition from uniaxial to biaxial symmetry for the hard-rod fluid. Complete wetting of the wall -- isotropic liquid interface by a biaxial nematic film for rods and a uniaxial nematic film for platelets is found. For the fluids confined by two parallel hard walls we determine a first-order capillary nematization transition for large slit widths, which terminates in a capillary critical point upon decreasing the slit width.

Abstract:Two-dimensional Ising strips subject to identical surface fields h(1)=h(2) > or =0 are studied for temperatures above and below the bulk critical temperature T(c) and a range of bulk fields h by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. In the case of nonvanishing surface fields, the near-critical behavior of the solvation force f(solv), total adsorption Gamma, inverse longitudinal correlation length xi(parallel)( -1) and specific heat C(H) is strongly influenced by the (pseudo) capillary condensation that occurs below T(c). We obtain scaling functions of f(solv), Gamma, and xi(parallel)(-1). C(H) exhibits a weakly rounded singularity on crossing the pseudocoexistence line. We contrast these results with those for the case of free boundaries where, for temperatures slightly below T(c), f(solv) and C(H) exhibit a sharp extremum away from h=0. Our results have direct repercussions for the properties of near-critical Ising films in three dimensions and we argue that the long-ranged solvation (Casimir) force in confined fluids should be more attractive in the neighborhood of the capillary critical point than exactly at the bulk critical point.

Abstract:Thermally excited capillary waves at fluid interfaces in binary liquid mixtures exhibit simultaneously both density and composition fluctuations. Based on a density functional theory for inhomogeneous binary liquid mixtures we derive an effective wavelength dependent Hamiltonian for fluid interfaces in these systems beyond the standard capillary-wave model. Explicit expressions are obtained for the surface tension, the bending rigidities, and the coupling constants of compositional capillary waves in terms of the profiles of the two number densities characterizing the mixture. These results lead to predictions for grazing-incidence x-ray scattering experiments at such interfaces.

Abstract:In passive fluid-fluid phase separation, a single interfacial tension sets both the capillary fluctuations of the interface and the rate of Ostwald ripening. We show that these phenomena are governed by two different tensions in active systems, and compute the capillary tension $\sigma_{cw}$ which sets the relaxation rate of interfacial fluctuations in accordance with capillary wave theory. We discover that strong enough activity can cause negative $\sigma_{cw}$. In this regime, depending on the global composition, the system self-organizes, either into a microphase-separated state in which coalescence is highly inhibited, or into an `active foam' state. Our results are obtained for Active Model B+, a minimal continuum model which, although generic, admits significant analytical progress.

Abstract:We study the surface tension and the phenomenon of phase coexistence for the Ising model on $\mathbbm{Z}^d$ ($d \geqslant 2$) with ferromagnetic but random couplings. We prove the convergence in probability (with respect to random couplings) of surface tension and analyze its large deviations : upper deviations occur at volume order while lower deviations occur at surface order. We study the asymptotics of surface tension at low temperatures and relate the quenched value $\tau^q$ of surface tension to maximal flows (first passage times if $d = 2$). For a broad class of distributions of the couplings we show that the inequality $\tau^a \leqslant \tau^q$ -- where $\tau^a$ is the surface tension under the averaged Gibbs measure -- is strict at low temperatures. We also describe the phenomenon of phase coexistence in the dilute Ising model and discuss some of the consequences of the media randomness. All of our results hold as well for the dilute Potts and random cluster models.

Abstract:A new method which allows one to study multiple coherent reflection/transmissions by partially transparent interfaces, (e.g., in multi-layer mesoscopic structures or grain boundaries in high-Tc's), in the framework of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity is suggested. It is argued that in the presence of interfaces, a straight-line trajectory transforms to a simple connected 1-dimensional tree (graph) with knots, i.e. the points where the interface scattering events occur and pieces of the trajectories are coupled. For the 2-component trajectory "wave function" which factorizes the matrix Gor'kov Green's function, a linear boundary condition on the knot is formulated for an arbitrary interface, specular or diffusive (in the many channel model). From the new boundary condition, we derive: (i) the excitation scattering amplitude for the multi-channel Andreev/ordinary reflection/transmission processes; (ii) the boundary conditions for the Riccati equation; (iii) the transfer matrix which couples the trajectory Green's function before and after the interface scattering. To show the usage of the method, the cases of a film separated from a bulk superconductor by a partially transparent interface, and a SIS' sandwich with finite thickness layers, are considered. The electric current response to the vector potential (the superfluid density $\rho_s$) with the $\pi $ phase difference in S and S' is calculated for the sandwich. It is shown that the model is very sensitive to imperfection of the SS' interface: the low temperature response being paramagnetic ($\rho_s <0$) in the ideal system case, changes its sign and becomes diamagnetic ($\rho_s > 0$) when the probability of reflection is as low as a few percent.

Abstract:With Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the non-equilibrium critical dynamics with a domain interface, taking the two-dimensional Ising model as an example. Starting from a semi-ordered state, the domain interface grows as time evolves. Dynamic scaling behavior is carefully analyzed. The magnetization and Binder cumulant inside the domain interface are governed by critical exponents different from those outside the domain interface. The ageing phenomenon is identified. For comparison, additional simulations starting from an ordered state have been performed with a free surface and a disordered surface.

Abstract:Understanding the physics of the integrable spin-1/2 XXZ chain has witnessed substantial progress, due to the development and application of sophisticated analytical and numerical techniques. In particular, infinite-temperature magnetization transport has turned out to range from ballistic, over superdiffusive, to diffusive behavior in different parameter regimes of the anisotropy. Since integrability is rather the exception than the rule, a crucial question is the change of transport under integrability-breaking perturbations. This question includes the stability of superdiffusion at the isotropic point and the change of diffusion constants in the easy-axis regime. In our work, we study this change of diffusion constants by a variety of methods and cover both, linear response theory in the closed system and the Lindblad equation in the open system, where we throughout focus on periodic boundary conditions. In the closed system, we compare results from the recursion method to calculations for finite systems and find evidence for a continuous change of diffusion constants over the full range of perturbation strengths. In the open system weakly coupled to baths, we find diffusion constants in quantitative agreement with the ones in the closed system in a range of nonweak perturbations, but disagreement in the limit of weak perturbations. Using a simple model in this limit, we point out the possibility of a diverging diffusion constant in such an open system.

Abstract:We investigate properties of the diffusive motion of an interface in the two-dimensional Ising model in equilibrium or nonequilibrium situations. We focused on the relation between the power spectrum of a time sequence of spins and diffusive motion of an interface which was already clarified in one- dimensional systems with a nonequilibrium phase transition like the asymmetric simple exclusion process. It is clarified that the interface motion is a diffusion process with a drift force toward the higher-temperature side when the system is in contact with heat reservoirs at different temperatures and heat transfers through the system. Effects of the width of the interface are also discussed.
Wetting Transition in the Two-Dimensional Blume-Capel Model: A Monte Carlo study

Abstract:The wetting transition of the Blume-Capel model is studied by a finite-size scaling analysis of $L \times M$ lattices where competing boundary fields $\pm H_1$ act on the first row or last row of the $L$ rows in the strip, respectively. We show that using the appropriate anisotropic version of finite size scaling, critical wetting in $d=2$ is equivalent to a "bulk" critical phenomenon with exponents $\alpha =-1$, $\beta =0$, and $\gamma=3$. These concepts are also verified for the Ising model. For the Blume-Capel model it is found that the field strength $H_{1c} (T)$ where critical wetting occurs goes to zero when the bulk second-order transition is approached, while $H_{1c}(T)$ stays nonzero in the region where in the bulk a first-order transition from the ordered phase, with nonzero spontaneous magnetization, to the disordered phase occurs. Interfaces between coexisting phases then show interfacial enrichment of a layer of the disordered phase which exhibits in the second order case a finite thickness only. A tentative discussion of the scaling behavior of the wetting phase diagram near the tricritical point also is given.

Bulk and interfacial properties of binary hard-platelet fluids

Abstract:Interfaces between demixed fluid phases of binary mixtures of hard platelets are investigated using density-functional theory. The corresponding excess free energy functional is calculated within a fundamental measure theory adapted to the Zwanzig model, in which the orientations of the particles of rectangular shape are restricted to three orthogonal orientations. Density and orientational order parameter profiles at interfaces between coexisting phases as well as the interfacial tension are determined. A density inversion, oscillatory density profiles, and a Fisher-Widom line have been found in a mixture of large thin and small thick platelets. The lowest interfacial tension corresponds to the mean bulk orientation of the platelets being parallel to the interface. For a mixture of large and small thin platelets, complete wetting of an isotropic-nematic interface by a second nematic phase is found.

Abstract:We present large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of a nematic-isotropic interface in a system of repulsive ellipsoidal molecules, focusing in particular on the capillary wave fluctuations of the interfacial position. The interface anchors the nematic phase in a planar way, i.e., the director aligns parallel to the interface. Capillary waves in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the director are considered separately. We find that the spectrum is anisotropic, the amplitudes of capillary waves being larger in the direction perpendicular to the director. In the long wavelength limit, however, the spectrum becomes isotropic and compares well with the predictions of a simple capillary wave theory.

On the Consistency of Dynamic Wetting Boundary Conditions for the Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard Equations

Abstract:We investigate the limiting behavior of the Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard model for binary-fluid flows as the diffuse-interface thickness passes to zero, in the presence of fluid-fluid-solid contact lines. Allowing for motion of such contact lines relative to the solid substrate is required to adequately model multi-phase and multi-species fluid transport past and through solid media. Even though diffuse-interface models provide an inherent slip mechanism through the mobility-induced diffusion, this slip vanishes as the interface thickness and mobility parameter tend to zero in the so-called sharp-interface limit. The objective of this work is to present dynamic wetting and generalized Navier boundary conditions for diffuse-interface models that are consistent in the sharp-interface limit. We concentrate our analysis on the prototypical binary-fluid Couette-flow problems. To verify the consistency of the diffuse-interface model in the limit of vanishing interface thickness, we provide reference limit solutions of a corresponding sharp-interface model. For parameter values both at and away from the critical viscosity ratio, we present and compare the results of both the diffuse- and sharp-interface models. The close match between both model results indicates that the considered test case lends itself well as a benchmark for further research.

Studying the Contact Point and Interface Moving in A Sinusoidal Tube with Lattice Boltzmann Method

Abstract:The multicomponent nonideal gas lattice Boltzmann model by Shan and Chen (S-C) is used to study the immiscible displacement in a sinusoidal tube. The movement of interface and the contact point (contact line in three-dimension) is studied. Due to the roughness of the boundary, the contact point shows "stick-slip" mechanics. The "stick-slip" effect decreases as the speed of the interface increases. For fluids that are nonwetting, the interface is almost perpendicular to the boundaries at most time, although its shapes at different position of the tube are rather different. When the tube becomes narrow, the interface turns a complex curves rather than remains simple menisci. The velocity is found to vary considerably between the neighbor nodes close to the contact point, consistent with the experimental observation that the velocity is multi-values on the contact line. Finally, the effect of three boundary conditions is discussed. The average speed is found different for different boundary conditions. The simple bounce-back rule makes the contact point move fastest. Both the simple bounce-back and the no-slip bounce-back rules are more sensitive to the roughness of the boundary in comparison with the half-way bounce-back rule. The simulation results suggest that the S-C model may be a promising tool in simulating the displacement behaviour of two immiscible fluids in complex geometry.

Abstract:We consider the influence of quenched noise upon interface dynamics in 2D and 3D capillary rise with rough walls by using phase-field approach, where the local conservation of mass in the bulk is explicitly included. In the 2D case the disorder is assumed to be in the effective mobility coefficient, while in the 3D case we explicitly consider the influence of locally fluctuating geometry along a solid wall using a generalized curvilinear coordinate transformation. To obtain the equations of motion for meniscus and contact lines, we develop a systematic projection formalism which allows inclusion of disorder. Using this formalism, we derive linearized equations of motion for the meniscus and contact line variables, which become local in the Fourier space representation. These dispersion relations contain effective noise that is linearly proportional to the velocity. The deterministic parts of our dispersion relations agree with results obtained from other similar studies in the proper limits. However, the forms of the noise terms derived here are quantitatively different from the other studies.
