Abstract:We study the dynamics of a single two-dimensional elliptical particle sedimenting in a Newtonian fluid using numerical simulations. The main emphasis in this work is to study the effect of boundaries on the flow patterns observed during sedimentation. The simulations were performed using a multi-block lattice Boltzmann method as well as a finite-element technique and the results are shown to be consistent. We have conducted a detailed study on the effects of density ratio, aspect ratio and the channel blockage ratio on the flow patterns during sedimentation. As the channel blockage ratio is varied, our results show that there are five distinct modes of sedimentation: oscillating, tumbling along the wall, vertical sedimentation, horizontal sedimentation and an inclined mode where the particle sediments with a non-trivial orientation to the vertical. The inclined mode is shown to form a smooth bridge between the vertical and horizontal modes of sedimentation. For narrow channels, the mode of sedimentation is found to be sensitively dependent on the initial orientation of the particle. We present a phase diagram showing the transitions between the various modes of sedimentation with changing blockage ratio of the channel.

Abstract:We investigate the sedimentation of chiral particles in viscous fluid flow. We identify helical ribbons as simple particles with strong translation-rotation coupling whose symmetry ensures that the centers of mass, buoyancy, resistance, and mobility coincide. Experimental measurements of both relevant mobility tensors show excellent agreement with simulations of ribbons made of interacting spheres. We observe quasi-periodic angular dynamics causing complex spatial trajectories. In tilt-spin phase space, orbits are closed due to time-reversal and reflection symmetry. Changing the helical ribbon length reveals a bifurcation at which the stable sedimentation orientations switch.

Abstract:When particles sediment in a viscous fluid, the character of their trajectories depends sensitively on the particles' shape. Here we study the sedimentation of U-shaped rigid disks in a regime where inertia can be neglected. We show that, unlike the case of planar disks which settle in a fixed orientation relative to the direction of gravity, U-shaped disks tend to perform a periodic sequence of pitching and rolling motions which cause their centre of mass to sediment along complex trajectories that range from quasi-periodic spirals to helices. Thus, we demonstrate that particles of achiral shape can sediment along chiral paths whose handedness is determined by their initial orientation rather than their geometry. Our analysis provides a framework in which to interpret the motion of sedimenting particles of arbitrary shape.

Abstract:Abstract The dynamics of a flexible filament sedimenting in a viscous fluid are explored analytically and numerically. Compared with the well-studied case of sedimenting rigid rods, the introduction of filament compliance is shown to cause a significant alteration in the long-time sedimentation orientation and filament geometry. A model is developed by balancing viscous, elastic and gravitational forces in a slender-body theory for zero-Reynolds-number flows, and the filament dynamics are characterized by a dimensionless elasto-gravitation number. Filaments of both non-uniform and uniform cross-sectional thickness are considered. In the weakly flexible regime, a multiple-scale asymptotic expansion is used to obtain expressions for filament translations, rotations and shapes. These are shown to match excellently with full numerical simulations. Furthermore, we show that trajectories of sedimenting flexible filaments, unlike their rigid counterparts, are restricted to a cloud whose envelope is determined by the elasto-gravitation number. In the highly flexible regime we show that a filament sedimenting along its long axis is susceptible to a buckling instability. A linear stability analysis provides a dispersion relation, illustrating clearly the competing effects of the compressive stress and the restoring elastic force in the buckling process. The instability travels as a wave along the filament opposite the direction of gravity as it grows and the predicted growth rates are shown to compare favourably with numerical simulations. The linear eigenmodes of the governing equation are also studied, which agree well with the finite-amplitude buckled shapes arising in simulations.

U-shaped disks in Stokes flow: Chiral sedimentation of a non-chiral particle

Abstract:We study the sedimentation of U-shaped circular disks in the Stokes limit of vanishing inertia. We simulate the flow past such disks using a finite-element-based solution of the 3D Stokes equations, accounting for the integrable singularities that develop along their edges. We show that the purely vertical sedimentation of such disks in their upright- [upside-down-] U orientation is unstable to perturbations about their pitching [rolling] axes. The instability is found to depend only weakly on the size of the container in which the disks sediment, allowing us to analyse their behaviour based on the resistance matrix which governs the evolution of the disk's six rigid-body degrees of freedom in an unbounded fluid. We show that the governing equations can be reduced to two ODEs which describe the disk's inclination against the direction of gravity. A phase-plane analysis, results of which are in good agreement with experiments, reveals that the two instabilities generally cause the disk to sediment along complex spiral trajectories while it alternates between pitching- and rolling-dominated motions. The chirality of the trajectories is set by the initial conditions rather than the (non-chiral) shape of the disk. For certain initial orientations, the disk retains its inclination and sediments along a perfectly helical path. The observed behaviour is fundamentally different from that displayed by flat circular disks which sediment without any reorientation. We therefore study the effect of variations in the disk's curvature to show how in the limit of vanishing curvature the behaviour of a flat disk is recovered.

Abstract:A collision model of two cylindrical particles is put forward. Based on the model the sedimentation of rigid cylindrical particles with mechanical contacts is simulated numerically by using the lattice Boltzmann method. Some numerical results are compared with the experimental ones given by us and others, and good agreements are found. In the sedimentation process, particles will rotate and drift at any initial orientation and terminal Reynolds number. The orientation, lateral position, drifty and sedimenting velocity of particles change periodically at small terminal Reynolds number. With the increasing terminal Reynolds number, the periodicity disappears, and an inverted T-structure forms. This structure appears more quickly and lasts for a longer time at larger terminal Reynolds number.
Sedimentation of spheroids in Newtonian fluids with spatially varying viscosity

Abstract:This paper examines the rigid body motion of a spheroid sedimenting in a Newtonian fluid with a spatially varying viscosity field. The fluid is at zero Reynolds number, and the viscosity varies linearly in space in an arbitrary direction with respect to the external force. First, we obtain the correction to the spheroid's rigid body motion in the limit of small viscosity gradients, using a perturbation expansion combined with the reciprocal theorem. Next, we determine the general form of the particle's mobility tensor relating its rigid body motion to an external force and torque. The viscosity gradient does not alter the force/translation and torque/rotation relationships, but introduces new force/rotation and torque/translation couplings that are determined for a wide range of particle aspect ratios. Finally, we discuss results for the spheroid's rotation and center-of-mass trajectory during sedimentation. Depending on the viscosity gradient direction and particle shape, a steady orientation may arise at long times or the particle may tumble continuously. These results are significantly different from the case when no viscosity gradient is present, where the particle stays at its initial orientation for all times. The particle's center of mass trajectory can also be altered depending on the particle's orientation behavior, for example giving rise to diagonal motion or zig-zagging motion. We summarize the observations for prolate and oblate spheroids for different viscosity gradient directions and provide phase plots delineating different dynamical regimes. We also provide guidelines to extend the analysis when the viscosity gradient exhibits a more complicated spatial behavior.

Abstract:In this paper, the sedimentation of a sphere and its radial migration in a Poiseuille flow in a vertical tube filled with a Newtonian fluid are simulated with a finite-difference-based distributed Lagrange multiplier (DLM) method. The flow features, the settling velocities, the trajectories and the angular velocities of the spheres sedimenting in a tube at different Reynolds numbers are presented. The results show that at relatively low Reynolds numbers, the sphere approaches the tube axis monotonically, whereas in a high-Reynolds-number regime where shedding of vortices takes place, the sphere takes up a spiral trajectory that is closer to the tube wall than the tube axis. The rotation motion and the lateral motion of the sphere are highly correlated through the Magnus effect, which is verified to be an important (but not the only) driving force for the lateral migration of the sphere at relatively high Reynolds numbers. The standard vortex structures in the wake of a sphere, for Reynolds number higher than 400, are composed of a loop mainly located in a plane perpendicular to the streamwise direction and two streamwise vortex pairs. When moving downstream, the legs of the hairpin vortex retract and at the same time a streamwise vortex pair with rotation opposite to that of the legs forms between the loops. For Reynolds number around 400, the wake structures shed during the impact of the sphere on the wall typically form into streamwise vortex structures or else into hairpin vortices when the sphere spirals down. The radial, angular and axial velocities of both neutrally buoyant and non-neutrally buoyant spheres in a circular Poiseuille flow are reported. The results are in remarkably good agreement with the available experimental data. It is shown that suppresion of the sphere rotation produces significant large additional lift forces pointing towards the tube axis on the spheres in the neutrally buoyant and more-dense-downflow cases, whereas it has a negligible effect on the migration of the more dense sphere in upflow.

Abstract:We simulated the sedimentations of two unequal spheres with different densities in a square tube for Galileo numbers (Ga) from 5 to 25, resulting in a Reynolds number range of based on the terminal settling velocity. The sedimentation of spheres with different densities is dynamically more complex than that of identical spheres. At high Ga the spheres oscillate in the centreline plane of the tube, where they are initially released from rest. By contrast, the spheres move to the diagonal or reverse-diagonal plane of the tube at low Ga, reaching a steady or periodic state depending on the density difference between them. A phase diagram illustrates the transitions between different sedimentation behaviours depending on Ga and the density difference. A possible mechanism for these behaviours is also presented. Furthermore, we compare two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional computations for our system to attain a better understanding of the hydrodynamic interactions between two unequal spheres at low but finite Reynolds number. Comparing relative trajectories, periods of oscillation and flow features shows that 2-D circular cylinders oscillate much more strongly and frequently than spheres under the same flow conditions. In particular, spheres do not have the discontinuity in period that arises in the 2-D case from the change in rotation sign of a heavy particle.

Abstract:The sedimentation dynamics of a prolate spheroidal particle in an unbounded elastoviscoplastic (EVP) fluid is studied by direct finite element simulations under inertialess flow conditions. The Saramito–Giesekus constitutive equation is employed to model the suspending liquid. The arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian formulation is used to handle the particle motion. The sedimentation, lift, and angular velocities of spheroids with aspect ratio between 1 and 8 are computed as the initial orientation, Bingham, and Weissenberg numbers are varied. Similar to the purely viscoelastic case, a spheroid in an EVP fluid rotates up to align its major axis with the applied force. As the Bingham number increases, the settling rate monotonically reduces, while the angular velocity first increases and then decreases. The initial orientation has a relevant effect on the particle stoppage because of the different drag experienced by the spheroid as its orientation is varied. The yielded and unyielded regions around the spheroid reveal that, for particle oriented transversely to the force, the yielded envelope shrinks near the tips due to the fast spatial decay of the stresses, and unyielded regions appear along the surface of the particle, similar to the solid caps observed at the front and back of a sphere. Fluid plasticity enhances the negative wake phenomenon that is observed at Weissenberg numbers significantly lower than the purely viscoelastic case. The results of the drag correction coefficient for particles aligned with longest axis along the force are presented.

Sedimentation of a suspension in a centrifugal field

Abstract:To model centrifugal sedimentation of biological suspensions, the time history of sedimentation of particles in a centrifugal field was considered for two geometries: a tube and a cylindrical container. The Kynch theory for batch gravitational settling in Cartesian coordinates based on mass conservation was extended to include a centrifugal sedimentation force, cylindrical coordinates, and the Hawksley-Vand hindered settling model. The resulting quasi-linear partial differential equation was solved by the method of characteristics. The combination of radial dependence of the sedimentation force and cylindrical geometry in the centrifugal case results in several differences in the time-position history diagram of the sedimentation process compared to the gravitational case. First, instead of a region of uniform concentration equal to the initial concentration, a region of concentration that is continuously decreasing with time results. Second, in the region of particle accumulation, curved constant concentration contours result instead of straight lines. Finally, a secondary shock that is dependent upon the initial concentration and the radius ratio of the rotating vessel appears in the centrifugal case. The time history of the concentration for a particle suspension with an initial concentration typical of blood is presented.

Abstract:The sedimentation of circular particles in a vertical channel filled with Oldroyd - B fluid was studied by an improved Distributed Lagrange Multiplier/fictitious domain (DLM) method. The sedimenting behaviors of two particles are presented firstly, which shows that, when the particles are dropped in a viscoealstic fluid, the stable configuration is the one where the particles are aligned parallel to the flow direction when the Mach number M is less than 1 and the elasticity number E is greater than 1. This agrees well with the known experimental in Ref. [1] and simulation results in Ref. [2]. Our simulations also show that, as in Newtonian fluid, the sedimentation of the particles will be accelerated due to the interaction between particles in a viscoealstic fluid.
Freely Rising or Falling of a Sphere in a Square Tube at Intermediate Reynolds Numbers

Abstract:The motion of a sphere freely rising or falling in a 5d (d is the diameter of the sphere) square tube was numerically studied for the sphere-to-fluid density ratio ranging from 0.1 to 2.3 (0.1 ≤ ρs/ρ ≤ 2.3, ρs is the density of spheres and ρ the fluid density) and Galileo number from 140 to 230 (140 ≤ Ga ≤ 230). We report that Hopf bifurcation occurs at Gacrit ≈ 157, where both the heavy and light spheres lose stability. The helical motion is widely seen for all spheres at Ga > 160 resulting from a double-threaded vortex interacting with the tube walls, which becomes irregular at Ga ≥ 190 where heavy spheres act differently from their counterparts; that is, heavy spheres change their helical directions alternately while light spheres exhibit helical trajectories with jaggedness in connection with the shedding of the double-threaded vortices. This is because of the difference in inertia between the heavy and light spheres. We also checked the oscillation periods for the helical motion of the spheres. They show opposite variations with ρs/ρ for the two types of spheres. Light spheres (ρs/ρ ≤ 0.7) reach a zigzagging regime at Ga ≥ 200 where a vortex loop (hairpin-like vortical structure) is formed which may develop into a vortex ring downstream at small ρs/ρ. This might be the first time a transition from the helical motion to the zigzagging motion for heavy spheres (ρs/ρ ≥ 1.8) has been reported. Finally, we examined the dependence of both the terminal Reynolds number and the drag coefficient of the spheres on the Galileo number.

Abstract:Rotating helical bodies of arbitrary cross-sectional profile and infinite length are explored as they swim through or transport a viscous fluid. The Stokes equations are studied in a helical coordinate system, and closed form analytical expressions for the force-free swimming speed and torque are derived in the asymptotic regime of nearly cylindrical bodies. High-order accurate expressions for the velocity field and swimming speed are derived for helical bodies of finite pitch angle through a double series expansion. The analytical predictions match well with the results of full numerical simulations, and accurately predict the optimal pitch angle for a given cross-sectional profile. This work may improve the modeling and design of helical structures used in microfluidic manipulation, synthetic microswimmer engineering, and the transport and mixing of viscous fluids.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the mathematical analysis of the bulk rheology of random suspensions of rigid particles settling under gravity in viscous fluids. Each particle generates a fluid flow that in turn acts on other particles and hinders their settling. In an equilibrium perspective, for a given ensemble of particle positions, we analyze both the associated mean settling speed and the velocity fluctuations of individual particles. In the 1970s, Batchelor gave a proper definition of the mean settling speed, a 60-year-old open problem in physics, based on the appropriate renormalization of long-range particle contributions. In the 1980s, a celebrated formal calculation by Caflisch and Luke suggested that velocity fluctuations in dimension $d=3$ should diverge with the size of the sedimentation tank, contradicting both intuition and experimental observations. The role of long-range self-organization of suspended particles in form of hyperuniformity was later put forward to explain additional screening of this divergence in steady-state observations. In the present contribution, we develop the first rigorous theory that allows to justify all these formal calculations of the physics literature.

Granular spirals on erodible sand bed submitted to a circular fluid motion

Abstract:An experimental study of a granular surface submitted to a circular fluid motion is presented. The appearance of an instability along the sand-water interface is observed beyond a critical radius $r_c$. This creates ripples with a spiral shape on the granular surface. A phase diagram of such patterns is constructed and discussed as a function of the rotation speed $\omega$ of the flow and as a function of the height of water $h$ above the surface. The study of $r_c$ as a function of $h$, $\omega$ and $r$ parameters is reported. Thereafter, $r_c$ is shown to depend on the rotation speed according to a power law. The ripple wavelength is found to decrease when the rotation speed increases and is proportional to the radial distance $r$. The azimuthal angle \az of the spiral arms is studied. It is found that \az scales with $h\omega r$. This lead to the conclusion that \az depends on the fluid momentum. Comparison with experiments performed with fluids allows us to state that the spiral patterns are not the signature of an instability of the boundary layer.

Shapes of sedimenting soft elastic capsules in a viscous fluid

Abstract:Soft elastic capsules which are driven through a viscous fluid undergo shape deformation coupled to their motion. We introduce an iterative solution scheme which couples hydrodynamic boundary integral methods and elastic shape equations to find the stationary axisymmetric shape and the velocity of an elastic capsule moving in a viscous fluid at low Reynolds numbers. We use this approach to systematically study dynamical shape transitions of capsules with Hookean stretching and bending energies and spherical rest shape sedimenting under the influence of gravity or centrifugal forces. We find three types of possible axisymmetric stationary shapes for sedimenting capsules with fixed volume: a pseudospherical state, a pear-shaped state, and buckled shapes. Capsule shapes are controlled by two dimensionless parameters, the Föppl-von-Kármán number characterizing the elastic properties and a Bond number characterizing the driving force. For increasing gravitational force the spherical shape transforms into a pear shape. For very large bending rigidity (very small Föppl-von-Kármán number) this transition is discontinuous with shape hysteresis. The corresponding transition line terminates, however, in a critical point, such that the discontinuous transition is not present at typical Föppl-von-Kármán numbers of synthetic capsules. In an additional bifurcation, buckled shapes occur upon increasing the gravitational force. This type of instability should be observable for generic synthetic capsules. All shape bifurcations can be resolved in the force-velocity relation of sedimenting capsules, where up to three capsule shapes with different velocities can occur for the same driving force. All three types of possible axisymmetric stationary shapes are stable with respect to rotation during sedimentation.

Sedimentation and structure of squirmer suspensions under gravity

Abstract:The effect of gravity on the collective motion of living microswimmers, such as bacteria and micro-algae, is pivotal to unravel not only bio-convection patterns but also the settling of bacterial biofilms on solid surfaces. In this work, we investigate suspensions of microswimmers under the influence of a gravitational field and hydrodynamics, simulated via dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) coarse-grained model. We first study the collective sedimentation of passive colloids and microswimmers of the puller and pusher types upon increasing the imposed gravitational field and compare with previous results. Once sedimentation occurs, we observe that, as the gravitational field increases, the bottom layer undergoes a transition to an ordered state compatible with a hexagonal crystal. In comparison with passive colloids, both pullers and pushers easily rearrange at the bottom layer to anneal defects. Specifically, pullers are better than pushers in preserving the hexagonal order of the bottom mono-layer at high gravitational fields.
