Abstract:This paper is a statistical survey of polar cap patches in relation to solar and geomagnetic activity. 10688 patches have been identified from in-situ plasma observations of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F16 satellite for 14 years (2005-2018). These patches are divided into two groups: 1) cold patches, which consist of dense but cold plasma; and 2) hot patches, which consist of dense but hot plasma. The statistical results indicate that (1) the occurrence of cold patches is clearly dependent on solar and geomagnetic activity, but hot patches don't show such dependence; (2) both cold and hot patches preferably appear in the winter season; (3) the spatial size of both cold and hot patches decreases (increases) with solar (geomagnetic) activity; (4) the spatial size of cold patches appears larger than that of hot patches under similar solar and geomagnetic activity.

Abstract:This paper presents research on polar cap ionosphere space weather phenomena conducted during the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) action ES0803 from 2008 to 2012. The main part of the work has been directed toward the study of plasma instabilities and scintillations in association with cusp flow channels and polar cap electron density structures/patches,which is considered as critical knowledge in order to develop forecast models for scintillations in the polar cap. We have approached this problem by multi-instrument techniques that comprise the EISCAT Svalbard Radar, SuperDARN radars, in-situ rocket, and GPS scintillation measurements. The Discussion section aims to unify the bits and pieces of highly specialized information from several papers into a generalized picture. The cusp ionosphere appears as a hot region in GPS scintillation climatology maps. Our results are consistent with the existing view that scintillations in the cusp and the polar cap ionosphere are mainly due to multi-scale structures generated by instability processes associated with the cross-polar transport of polar cap patches. We have demonstrated that the SuperDARN convection model can be used to track these patches backward and forward in time. Hence, once a patch has been detected in the cusp inflow region, SuperDARN can be used to forecast its destination in the future. However, the high-density gradient of polar cap patches is not the only prerequisite for high-latitude scintillations. Unprecedented high resolution rocket measurements reveal that the cusp ionosphere is associated with filamentary precipitation giving rise to kilometer scale gradients onto which the gradient drift instability can operate very efficiently... Abstract:We report the continuous monitoring of a polar cap patch, encompassing its creation, and a subsequent evolution that differs from the classic behavior. The patch was formed from the storm‐enhanced density plume, by segmentation associated with a subauroral polarization stream generated by a substorm. Its initial antisunward motion was halted due to a rapidly changing of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions from strong southward to strong eastward with weaker northward components, and the patch subsequently very slowly evolved behind the duskside of a lobe reverse convection cell in afternoon sectors, associated with high‐latitude lobe reconnection, much of it fading rapidly due to an enhancement of the ionization recombination rate. This differs from the classic scenario where polar cap patches are transported across the polar cap along the streamlines of twin‐cell convection pattern from day to night. This observation provides us new important insights into patch formation and control by the IMF, which has to be taken into account in F region transport models and space weather forecasts.
GPS scintillations associated with cusp dynamics and polar cap patches

Abstract:This paper investigates the relative scintillation level associated with cusp dynamics (including precipitation, flow shears, etc.) with and without the formation of polar cap patches around the cusp inflow region by the EISCAT Svalbard radar (ESR) and two GPS scintillation receivers. A series of polar cap patches were observed by the ESR between 8:40 and 10:20 UT on December 3, 2011. The polar cap patches combined with the auroral dynamics were associated with a significantly higher GPS phase scintillation level (up to 0.6 rad) than those observed for the other two alternatives, i.e., cusp dynamics without polar cap patches, and polar cap patches without cusp aurora. The cusp auroral dynamics without plasma patches were indeed related to GPS phase scintillations at a moderate level (up to 0.3 rad). The polar cap patches away from the active cusp were associated with sporadic and moderate GPS phase scintillations (up to 0.2 rad). The main conclusion is that the worst global navigation satellite system space weather events on the dayside occur when polar cap patches enter the polar cap and are subject to particle precipitation and flow shears, which is analogous to the nightside when polar cap patches exit the polar cap and enter the auroral oval.

Abstract:Throat auroras and polar cap patches are common phenomena in the polar ionosphere resulting from magnetosphere‐ionosphere coupling. A campaign was organized, with all‐sky imagers at Yellow River Station, the European Incoherent Scatter Svalbard Radar, and coordinated low‐altitude spacecraft observations. During periods of radial interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), observations showed that, as poleward moving throat auroras faded around the polar cap boundary, they linked to poleward moving ionization patches. The throat auroras were produced by soft‐electron precipitation associated with dayside magnetic reconnection. The red line emission intensity of throat auroras was correlated with dayside reconnection events. Dense plasma from lower latitudes was transported poleward via enhanced convection in the throat auroras to form patches. This is a potentially new formation mechanism for patches associated with throat auroras and magnetic reconnection for radial IMF. Moreover, the patches move anti‐sunward due to the E × B drift.

Scintillation and irregularities from the nightside part of a Sun-aligned polar cap arc

Abstract:In this paper we study the presence of irregularities and scintillation in relation to the nightside part of a long-lived, Sun-aligned transpolar arc on 15 January 2015. The arc was observed in DMSP UV and particle data and lasted at least 3 h between 1700 and 2000 UT. The arc was more intense than the main oval during this time. From all-sky imagers on Svalbard we were able to study the evolution of the arc, which drifted slowly westward toward the dusk cell. The intensity of the arc as observed from ground was 10-17 kR in 557.7 nm and 2-3.5 kR in 630.0 nm, i.e., significant emissions in both green and red emission lines. We have used high-resolution raw data from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) receivers and backscatter from Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radars to study irregularities and scintillation in relation to the polar cap arc. Even though the literature has suggested that polar cap arcs are potential sources for irregularities, our results indicate only very weak irregularities. This may be due to the background density in the northward IMF polar cap being too low for significant irregularities to be created.

Abstract:The Sporadic-E (Es) layer is an often-observed phenomenon at high latitudes; however, our understanding of the polar cap Es layer is severely limited due to the scarce number of measurements. Here, the first comprehensive study of the polar cap Es layer associated with Global Positioning System (GPS) Total Electron Content (TEC) variations and scintillations is presented with multiple measurements at Resolute, Canada (Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde (CADI), Northward-looking face of Resolute Incoherent-Scatter Radar (RISR-N), and GPS receiver). According to the joint observations, the polar cap Es layer is a thin patch structure with variously high electron density, which gradually develops into the lower E region (~100 km) and horizontally extends >200 km. Moreover, the TEC variations produced by the polar cap Es layer are pulse-like enhancements with a general amplitude of ~0.5 TECu and are followed by smaller but rapid TEC perturbations. Furthermore, the possible scintillation effects likely associated with the polar cap Es layer are also discussed. As a consequence, the results widely expand our understanding on the polar cap Es layer, in particular on TEC variations.

Abstract:We report simultaneous global monitoring of a patch of ionization and in situ observation of ion upflow at the center of the polar cap region during a geomagnetic storm. Our observations indicate strong fluxes of upwelling O+ ions originating from frictional heating produced by rapid antisunward flow of the plasma patch. The statistical results from the crossings of the central polar cap region by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F16–F18 from 2010 to 2013 confirm that the field‐aligned flow can turn upward when rapid antisunward flows appear, with consequent significant frictional heating of the ions, which overcomes the gravity effect. We suggest that such rapidly moving patches can provide an important source of upwelling ions in a region where downward flows are usually expected. These observations give new insight into the processes of ionosphere‐magnetosphere coupling.

Abstract:A multi‐instrument study is conducted at the dayside polar ionosphere to investigate the spatio‐temporal evolution of scintillation in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals during non‐storm conditions. Bursts of intense amplitude and phase scintillation started to occur at ∼ 9 MLT and persisted for more than 1 hour implying the simultaneous existence of Fresnel and large‐scale sized irregularities of significant strength in the pre‐noon sector. Measurements from the EISCAT radar in Svalbard (ESR) revealed the presence of dense plasma structures with significant gradients in regions of strong Joule heating/fast flows and soft precipitation when scintillation was enhanced. Plasma structuring down to Fresnel scales were observed both in the auroral oval as well as inside the polar cap with the associated amplitude scintillation exhibiting similar strengths regardless of whether the density structures were in regions of active auroral dynamics or not. The observations are placed within the context of different sources of free energy, providing insights into the important mechanisms that generate irregularities capable of perturbing GNSS signal properties in the dayside ionosphere. Furthermore, a strong negative excursion in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By component during the northward turning of Bz led to the transport of a depleted region of plasma density into the post‐noon sector that significantly weakened both amplitude and phase scintillation.

Abstract:Dynamic mesoscale flow structures move across the open field line regions of the polar caps and then enter the nightside plasma sheet where they can cause important space weather disturbances, such as streamers, substorms, and omega bands. The polar cap structures have long durations (apparently at least ∼11⁄2 to 2 h), but their connections to disturbances have received little attention. Hence, it will be important to uncover what causes these flow enhancement channels, how they map to the magnetospheric and magnetosheath structures, and what controls their propagation across the polar cap and their dynamic effects after reaching the nightside auroral oval. The examples presented here use 630-nm auroral and radar observations and indicate that the motion of flow channels could be critical for determining when and where a particular disturbance within the nightside auroral oval will be triggered, and this could be included for full understanding of flow channel connections to disturbances. Also, it is important to determine how polar cap flow channels lead to flow channels within the auroral oval, i.e., the plasma sheet, and determine the conditions along nightside oval/plasma sheet field lines that interact with an incoming polar cap flow channel to cause a particular disturbance. It will also be interesting to consider the generality of geomagnetic disturbances being related to connections with incoming polar cap flow channels, including the location, time, and type of disturbances, and whether the duration and expansion of disturbances are related to flow channel duration and to multiple flow channels.
Statistical Features of Polar Cap North and South Indices in Response to Interplanetary and Terrestrial Conditions: A Revisit

Abstract:In this study, we investigate statistical features of polar cap north (PCN) and south (PCS) indices in response to various interplanetary conditions (interplanetary magnetic field [IMF] orientation in three‐dimensions) and terrestrial conditions (seasonal and magnetic local time [MLT] locations of the index stations). The concurrent PCN‐PCS pairs for 1998–2002 and 2004–2018 are divided based on their sign type (positive‐positive, negative‐negative, negative‐positive, and positive‐negative PCN‐PCS pairs) and time coverage (the times when both index stations are in the dawn/dusk MLT sector during northern summer/winter). Analyzing the IMF orientation dependence on the occurrence probabilities of concurrent indices and on the differences between the indices in various sign types for each time coverage reveals that the statistical features in PCN‐PCS pairs obtained in the dawn MLT sector can be largely explained by the effects of the three‐component IMF (related to the polar cap convection patterns) combined with season (related to the hemispheric asymmetry in solar illumination‐induced ionospheric conductance). However, those obtained in the dusk MLT sector are controlled dominantly by seasonal effects rather than IMF orientation effects. Our findings indicate that PCN‐PCS pair data provide local views about the solar wind‐magnetosphere‐ionosphere (SW‐M‐I) coupling system with different control efficiencies of IMF orientation and season depending on the MLT location of the stations. Therefore, introducing polar cap indices recorded simultaneously at various locations in both hemispheres and analyzing them are strongly required to infer global views of the coupled SW‐M‐I system in the open field regions with higher confidence.

Abstract:By using a database of 4,634 cold patches (high density and low electron temperature) and 4,700 hot patches (high density and high electron temperature) from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F16 in 2005–2018 winter months (October–March), we present a statistical survey of the distributions of polar cap patches for different interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientations and ionospheric convection geometries. We investigate the dependence of cold and hot patches on local plasma transport and soft‐electron precipitation. Our results indicate that: in winter, (a) more cold and hot patches occur in the stronger anti‐sunward flow organized by different IMF orientations. (b) cold patches are frequent near the central polar cap, while hot patches are closer to the auroral oval. (c) enhanced anti‐sunward flow (E × B drift) mainly contributes to cold patch occurrence under Bz < 0, and soft‐electron precipitation contributes to hot patch occurrence both under southward and northward IMF. Polar cap patches are common phenomena in the polar ionosphere and consist of high‐density plasma. Global ULF Waves Excited by Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure Impulses: 2. the Spatial Distribution Asymmetry

Abstract:Asymmetry is a prevalent characteristic in numerous space physics phenomena. In this study, we investigate the statistical properties and spatial variations of ultra-low frequency power globally after positive dynamic pressure pulses, utilizing high-resolution magnetic field data from SuperMAG between 2012 and 2019. Specifically, we focus on the dawn-dusk and north-south asymmetries of Pc2-5 fluctuations. Our analysis reveals that the power enhancement in the Pc2 band at approximately 30 degrees magnetic latitude (MLAT) in the southern hemisphere is attributable to the South Atlantic Anomaly region. At MLAT approximate to 15 degrees, the power of Pc3-5 waves in both hemispheres exhibits a local minimum, which is associated with the strong coupling of compressional and Alfv & eacute;n waves. Moreover, around MLAT = 60 degrees, the dawnside Pc5 wave power exceeds that on the duskside when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is westward, and the result is reversed when the IMF is eastward. Notably, Pc3-5 wave power from MLAT = 30 degrees to MLAT = 75 degrees in the northern hemisphere is generally higher than that in the southern hemisphere. In regions with MLAT > 75 degrees, which corresponds to the polar cap between 0 and 15 magnetic local time, the power of Pc3 pulsations is higher during summer in the northern hemisphere and higher during winter in the southern hemisphere. These findings underscore the significant role of the solar wind and the IMF in controlling geomagnetic pulsations and further deepen our understanding of the coupling between fluctuations in the ionosphere and the magnetosphere.
Mixed Source Region Signatures Inside Magnetic Switchback Patches Inferred by Heavy Ion Diagnostics

Abstract:Since Parker Solar Probe's (Parker's) first perihelion pass at the Sun, large amplitude Alfvén waves grouped in patches have been observed near the Sun throughout the mission. Several formation processes for these magnetic switchback patches have been suggested with no definitive consensus. To provide insight to their formation, we examine the heavy ion properties of several adjacent magnetic switchback patches around Parker's 11th perihelion pass capitalizing on a spacecraft lineup with Solar Orbiter where each samples the same solar wind streams over a large range of longitudes. Heavy ion properties (Fe/O, C$^{6+}$/C$^{5+}$, O$^{7+}$/O$^{6+}$) related to the wind's coronal origin, measured with Solar Orbiter can be linked to switchback patch structures identified near the Sun with Parker. We find that switchback patches do not contain distinctive ion and elemental compositional signatures different than the surrounding non-switchback solar wind. Both the patches and ambient wind exhibit a range of fast and slow wind qualities, indicating coronal sources with open and closed field lines in close proximity. These observations and modeling indicate switchback patches form in coronal hole boundary wind and with a range of source region magnetic and thermal properties. Furthermore, the heavy ion signatures suggest interchange reconnection and/or shear driven processes may play a role in their creation.

Statistical Distribution of the Peak Frequency of ECH Waves in the Outer Magnetosphere from Magnetospheric Multiscale Satellite Observations

Abstract:Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions with frequencies between the harmonics of the electron gyrofrequencies. Their frequency properties provide clues for understanding their generation and are keys to evaluating their scattering efficiency. Based on Magnetospheric Multiscale satellite observations, we explored the statistical frequency properties of first-harmonic band ECH waves in the outer magnetosphere. The frequencies at the peak power of ECH waves are found to be day-night and dawn-dusk asymmetries, with higher values in the regions from dawn to post-noon, and these asymmetries are more evident during weaker geomagnetic activity. Furthermore, the frequencies at the peak power of ECH waves decrease gradually with increasing |MLAT| and are positively correlated with their amplitudes at each magnetic local time or |MLAT|. Information on the frequency properties of ECH waves presented in this study can be crucial for future modeling of their contributions to magnetospheric electron dynamics. Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions with frequencies between the harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency. They act as major contributors to the generation of diffuse auroras in the outer magnetosphere via the pitch angle scattering of plasma sheet electrons into the atmosphere. Theoretically, such electron scattering can be quantified by quasilinear scattering rates, which are strongly controlled by the wave frequency. However, the current knowledge of their frequency properties is lacking. In this study, we statistically analyze the frequency properties of the first-harmonic band ECH waves in the outer magnetosphere using Magnetospheric Multiscale satellite observations. The statistical results show that the wave frequency at peak power highly depends on the magnetic local time (MLT), magnetic latitude (MLAT), and wave amplitude. These new findings are of great importance in advancing our knowledge of ECH wave generation and in modeling ECH-induced plasma sheet electron dynamics in the outer magnetosphere. ECH waves have clear frequency distribution patterns depending on the MLT, MLAT, and wave amplitude The frequency at the peak power is larger from dawn to post-noon, maximized near the magnetic equator, and decreases with increasing |MLAT| The frequency at the peak power increases with the amplitude for each specific magnetic local time or |MLAT|
