Drying R&D in China: Historical perspective and current status

Abstract:It has been recognized globally that an archival journal devoted to drying science, engineering and technology is feasible only if it is truly global in scope. Professor Arun Mujumdar recognized it very early in his research career at McGill University and went on to first develop international connections amongst academics active in drying area around the world. This was truly a Herculean task in the absence of telecommunication facilities and the internet; using snail mail was really the only option to make connections. Finally, decision to launch the IDS (International Drying Symposium) series was made in 1977. The first IDS was organized by Professor Mujumdar in 1978 with some 120 papers from over 20 countries. This was followed by a second one, also at McGill University, in 1980. After the third successful IDS in 1982 held at the University of Birmingham, Professor Mujumdar was invited to found this journal by Dr. Mauritania Dekker of Marcel Dekker Inc., in New York, USA. Although a junior academic at the time, he was already busy organizing IDS without much support and also publishing the proceedings volumes. He also was concurrently editing for Hemisphere Publishing of Washington DC, a new book series entitled Advances in Drying along with another multi-volume book series entitled Advances in Transport Processes for Wiley Eastern of New Delhi, India. While carrying above average teaching and research load at McGill University, it was impossible for him to accept the responsibility at the time and he declined the invitation.
