Abstract:Sepsis is one of the predominant causes of neonatal mortality. 1 Prevention and management of neonatal sepsis is one of the most crucial interventions to achieve a global reduction in neonatal mortality, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. 2 The greatest challenge in reducing sepsis-related mortality is its timely and reliable diagnosis, which is rendered difficult by a long (typically 24–48 hours) turn-around time of blood culture. 3 The protean and nonspecific clinical manifestations of sepsis, along with the coexisting morbidities with similar presenting features, compound the issue further. Given that each 30-minute delay in treatment has been reported to be associated with a 1.5 times higher risk of 30-day mortality, timely and appropriate institution of treatment remains a critical determinant of sepsis-related outcomes in neonates. 1 , 4 Therefore, it is essential to detect culture-proven sepsis with reasonable confidence at the time of clinical suspicion itself, much before the culture reports are obtained.
