Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites allow the synthesis of high-quality, nanostructured semiconducting films via easily accessible solution-based techniques. This has allowed tremendous development in optoelectronic applications, primarily solar cells and light-emitting diodes. Allowed by the ease of access to nanostructure, chirality has recently been introduced in semiconducting perovskites as a promising way to obtain advanced control of charge and spin and for developing circularly polarized light sources. Circular polarization of photoluminescence (CPL) is a powerful tool to probe the electronic structure of materials. However, CPL in chiral perovskites has been scarcely investigated, and a study in bulk thin films and at room temperature is still missing. In this work, we fabricate bromine-based chiral perovskites by using a bulky chiral organic cation mixed with CsBr, resulting in Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite thin films. We measure CPL on these films at room temperature and, by using unpolarized photoexcitation, we record a degree of circular polarization of photoluminescence in the order of 10(-3) and provide a full spectral characterization of CPL. Our results show that chirality is imparted on the electronic structure of the semiconductor; we hypothesize that the excess in polarization of emitted light originates from the charge in the photogenerated Wannier exciton describing an orbit in a symmetry-broken environment. Furthermore, our experiments allow the direct measurement of the magnetic dipole moment of the optical transition, which we estimate to be >= 0.1 mu(B). Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings on the development of chiral semiconducting perovskites as sources of circularly polarized light.

Abstract:Due to their magnetic photophysical properties, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are of particular interest. They have a wide range of potential applications in biological science, 3D display, information storage, spintronics, optoelectronic devices, and so forth. The ones with excellent CPL character range from small chiral molecules to supermolecules, and from chiral rare earth complexes to nano-superstructures. Recently, this field began fast development due to the progress of new materials and technology in chiral science and nanoscience. This review presents a whole picture of this field, including theory and experiments. The formulas suitable to ordinary chiral materials and chiral optical crystals are presented. The reviewed CPL-active materials are categorized into small organic molecules, lanthanide complexes, inorganic nanomaterials, self-assembled helical nanomaterials, and supermolecular gels. The corresponding merits and drawbacks are discussed systematically. The influence factors on the dissymmetry factor and luminescence efficiency are presented in detail. Last, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of concurrently enhancing the dissymmetry factor and luminescent efficiency.

Abstract:In situ control of a circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) signal is desirable but rarely addressed. Even to compare with traditional chemical regulations, controlling the CPL signal at the material level using simple physical manipulation (such as photoexcitation) can be more convenient and preferable. In this work, we have constructed carbon dot-based composite luminescent materials with CPL activity. The materials can exist in the sol-gel state in a mixture solvent by chiral co-assembly, and chirality transfer occurred in the supramolecular assemblies and induced the CPL activity. Owing to the unique luminescent properties of the carbon dot component, the obtained CPL signal of the composite system is therefore excitation-dependent. The control ability of the CPL signal may allow the composite materials to find potential usage in advanced chirality-related fields.

Abstract:The CPL films are prepared based on the flexible co‐assembly of exogenous chiral dopants, achiral liquid crystal polymers, and fluorescent molecules. The controllable CPL arose from the common effects of emissive dye with conformational chirality and selective Bragg reflection of chiral liquid crystal polymers. The presence of repeated nematic phases contributes to adjusting the luminescence dissymmetry factors of films. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are highly demanded due to their great potential in optoelectronic and chiroptical elements. However, the preparation of CPL films with high luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) remains a formidable task, which impedes their practical application in film‐based devices. Herein, a facile strategy to prepare solid CPL film with a high glum through exogenous chiral induction and amplification of liquid crystal polymers is proposed. Amplification and reversion of the CPL appear when the films are annealed at the chiral nematic liquid crystalline temperature and the maximal glum up to 0.30 due to the enhancement of selective reflection. Thermal annealing treatment at different liquid crystalline states facilitates the formation of the chiral liquid phase and adjusts the circularly polarized emission. This work not only provides a straightforward and versatile platform to construct organic films capable of exhibiting strong circularly polarized emission but also is helpful in understanding the exact mechanism for the liquid crystal enhancement of CPL performance.

Abstract:Realizing high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials remains a big challenge, which necessitates understanding systematically how their molecular structure controls the CPL. Here we investigate representative organic chiral emitters with different transition density distributions and reveal the pivotal role of transition density in CPL. We rationalize that to obtain large g-factors, two conditions should be simultaneously satisfied: (i) the transition density for the S1 (or T1)-to-S0 emission must be delocalized over the entire chromophore; and (ii) the chromophore inter-segment twisting must be restricted and tuned to an optimal value (~50o). Our findings offer molecular-level insights into the CPL of organic emitters, with potential applications in the design of chiroptical materials and systems with strong CPL effects.

Abstract:Circularly polarized light emitting active materials are of great interest, and the convenient tuning of the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) remains a significant challenge. Integrating fluorescent materials into chiral photonic crystals to achieve tunable CPL is a promising approach, allowing efficient manipulation of CPL by adjusting the photonic band gap (PBG). We combined carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), which self-assembles into a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC). The helical structure can selectively reflect right circularly polarized (RCP) light, achieving strong circular dichroism (CD) and high CPL dissymmetry factor g lum . In addition, the chiral template is thermo-responsive. The CPL wavelength can be adjusted by regulating the PBG position through temperature adjustment, while the chirality of CPL keeps high especially in the heating process. This work enables stimuli-responsive manipulation of CPL under one template through temperature regulation, which may open up enormous possibilities for the cellulose-based material in different areas.

Abstract:Chiroptical functional materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties have drawn increasing interest for their potential applications in optoelectronics and chiral sensing. However, the development of CPL materials with both large luminescence dissymmetry (g lum) factors and high quantum yields (Φ F) in solid state is still a challenging task. In this work, organic–inorganic hybrid silica films have been prepared by the in-situ polycondensation of a cholesteric liquid-crystalline organosilane with the addition of a chiral dopant and an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative under an acidic condition. The resulting films emit bright CPL with the absolute g lum values about 0.15, which were mainly caused by the long-range ordered supramolecular helical structure. It is found that the handedness of the CPL was dominated by the selective reflection of the cholesteric liquid crystal films.

Intense Circularly Polarized Luminescence Induced by Chiral Supramolecular Assembly: The Importance of Intermolecular Electronic Coupling

Abstract:Herein we report on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission originating from supramolecular chirality of organic microcrystals with a |glum| value up to 0.11. The microcrystals were prepared from highly emissive difluoroboron β-diketonate (BF2dbk) dyes R-1 or S-1 with chiral binaphthol (BINOL) skeletons. R-1 and S-1 exhibit undetectable CPL signals in solution but manifest intense CPL emission in their chiral microcrystals. The chiral superstructures induced by BINOL skeletons were confirmed by XRD analysis. Spectral analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that intermolecular electronic coupling, mediated by the asymmetric stacking in the chiral superstructures, effectively alters excited-state electronic structures and facilitates electron transitions perpendicular to BF2bdk planes. The coupling increases cosθμ,m from 0.05 (monomer) to 0.86 (tetramer) and triggers intense optical activity of BF2bdk. The results demonstrate that optical activity of chromophores within assemblies can be regulated by both orientation and extent of intermolecular electronic couplings.

Abstract:Surface states‐related CD/CPL behaviors of helically assembled carbonized polymer dots are observed and manipulated via interfacial dynamics. The excitation‐dependent CPL activities are closely related to a synergistic‐competition phenomenon between interfacial energy transfer and dipole–dipole interactions. These findings provide unique insights to the interfacial emission properties of host–guest nano‐luminophores. Stimulating and harnessing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is not only a sine qua non for fundamentally unveiling chirogenesis in physical chemistry, but also a pivotal prerequisite for implementation of such phenomenon in research fields including chiral optoelectronics and theranostics. Herein, red‐emissive carbonized polymer dots (CPDs)‐based helical structures were synthesized in this work via biomolecule‐tailored organic–inorganic co‐assembly strategy. The surface states‐related chirality exhibits enhanced circular dichroism (CD) and CPL activities with anisotropic factors as high as gCD,max = 5.4 × 10−3 and glum,max = 1.5 × 10−2, respectively. The obtained CPL signals can be further manipulated in an excitation‐dependent manner, indicating that a synergistic‐competition phenomenon exists between configurational chirality and intermolecular energy‐transfer dynamics, which is further supported by simulations based on density function theory (DFT). Such tunable CPL behavior triggers revolutionary designs and applications of these chiral CPDs into the realm of chirality‐related biological issues and next‐generation chiral optoelectronics.

Dynamic Circularly Polarized Luminescence with Tunable Handedness and Intensity Enabled by Achiral Dichroic Dyes in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Medium

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are chiral supramolecular systems that self-assemble into a highly regular helical arrangement in a liquid crystal (LC) medium. Such an arrangement is highly beneficial for the chiral enlargement effect on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. Dichroic dyes with rod-like molecular structures can exhibit fluorescence anisotropy along both the long and short molecular axes owing to their transition dipole moment (TDM) vectors. In this work, a pair of donor-accepter (D-A) achiral dichroic dyes is prepared, namely, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene derivative (P1, whose TDM vector is parallel to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| > F⊥ ) and anthraquinone derivative (N1, whose TDM vector is perpendicular to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| < F⊥ ). CLCs can be fabricated by doping P1 or N1 together with chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-derived inducers into SLC1717 medium. Dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity is achieved by changing the N1:P1 mass ratio, and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (gem ) value reaches |0.71|. This work describes the first observation of dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity enabled by TDM regulation of achiral dichroic dyes in a CLC medium.
In Situ Regulation of Microphase Separation-Recognized Circularly Polarized Luminescence via Photoexcitation-Induced Molecular Aggregation.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted great interest owing to its extensive optical information and chiral structural dependence. However, rationally regulating solid-phase CPL signals remains difficult because of the close packing of molecules in solid-state materials and the lack of structural visualization. In this work, we proposed a microphase-separation-recognized CPL regulation strategy via coassembly of a hexathiobenzene-based luminophore and chiral block copolymer (cBCP) with photocontrollability. As a consequence to the continuous increase in the luminophore-to-cBCP ratio, the CPL signal of the supramolecular system exhibited an increasing trend until a critical point. Then, further increasing the ratio stretched the helical pitch of cBCP, which led to CPL reduction. With the photoexcitation-induced molecular aggregation of the luminophore, which was implemented using photoirradiation, the helical pitch was retracted along with the restoration of the CPL signal. These processes were fully recognized and monitored by the microphase-separated nanomorphological change of the coassembled system, which indicated that such a structural contrast could be an effective method for rationally regulating the supramolecular chiropticity of solid-state materials.

Abstract:Currently, molecular gels have become one kind of the fascinating candidates for fabricating chiroptical materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, due to the tunable and modifiable structure, simple yet facile synthesis, controlled and reversible assembly, and so on. Since self-assembly approach has been regarded as an efficient way for amplifying the chirality, supramolecular gelation provides a remarkable method for fabricating CPL materials with high dissymmetry factor (glum). Various gel systems, including chiral-, achiral-, organic-inorganic hybrid systems can be endowed with CPL activities through supramolecular gelatinization, possessing excellent luminescence circular polarization. This chapter summarizes and reviews the present status and progress of supramolecular gel systems with CPL activity.

Abstract:Abstract A chiral‐switchable device for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is fabricated based on dynamic superstructure of cholesteric liquid crystals (N*‐LC) doped with light‐driven molecular motor (MM), which achieves simultaneous modulation of chirality and intensity of CPL. Functional MM, designed with the modification of alkyl chains on the rotor, allows for advanced chemical isomerization to be driven with light. The selective reflection band due to the N*‐LC is shifted upon UV irradiation so that the reflection band moves toward the emissive band of the luminescence dyes, yielding CPL with opposite handedness and high dissymmetry factor values. The geometric changes of the motor during the rotary steps finally cause a remarkable reversible handedness inversion of the N*‐LC, which also leads switchable chirality of CPL. The dynamic N*‐LC cell bearing the light‐controlled selective reflection is useful for generating CPL from fluorescent materials and for allowing light chirality‐switching in CPL signals, which presents new possibilities for optoelectronic and photonics applications.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) plays a pivotal role in cutting-edge display and information technologies. Currently achieving precise color control and dynamic signal regulation in CPL still remains challenging due to the elusory relationship between fluorescence and chirality. Inspired by the natural mechanisms governing color formation and chiral interaction, we proposed an addition-subtraction principle theory to address this issue. Three fluorene-based polymers synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation with different electron-deficient monomers exhibit similar structures and UV-vis absorption, but distinct fluorescence emissions due to intramolecular charge transfer. Based on this, precise-color CPL-active films are obtained through quantitative supramolecular co-assembly directed by addition principle. Particularly, an ideal white-emitting CPL film (CIE coordinates: (0.33, 0.33)) is facilely fabricated with a high quantum yield of 80.8% and a dissymmetry factor (glum) of 1.4 × 10−2. Structural analysis reveals that the ordered stacking orientation favors higher glum. Furthermore, to address the dynamically regulated challenge, the comparable subtraction principle is proposed, involving a contactless chiral communication between excited and ground states. The representative system consisting of as-prepared fluorene-based polymers and chirality-selective absorption azobenzene (Azo)-containing polymers is constructed, achieving CPL weakening, reversal, and enhancement. Finally, a switchable quick response code is realized based on trans-cis isomerization of Azo moiety.

Abstract:An amphiphilic aza‐BODIPY dye (S)‐1 bearing two chiral hydrophilic side chains with S‐stereogenic centers was synthesized. This dye exhibited kinetic‐controlled self‐assembly pathways and supramolecular chiral polymorphism properties in MeOH/H2O (9/1, v/v) mixed solvent. The (S)‐1 monomers first aggregated into a kinetic controlled, off‐pathway species Agg. A, which was spontaneously transformed into an on‐pathway metastable aggregate (Agg. B) and subsequently into the thermodynamic Agg. C. The three aggregate polymorphs of dye (S)‐1 displayed distinct optical properties and nanomorphologies. In particular, chiral J‐aggregation characteristics were observed for both Agg. B and Agg. C, such as Davydov‐split absorption bands (Agg. B), extremely sharp and intense J‐band with large bathochromic shift (Agg. C), non‐diminished fluorescence upon aggregation, as well as strong bisignated Cotton effects. Moreover, the AFM and TEM studies revealed that Agg. A had the morphology of nanoparticle while fibril or rod‐like helical nanostructures with left‐handedness were observed respectively for Agg. B and Agg. C. By controlling the kinetic transformation process from Agg. B to Agg. C, thin films consisting of Agg. B and Agg. C with different ratios were prepared, which displayed tunable CPL with emission maxima at 788 ‐ 805 nm and g–factors between –4.2 × 10–2 and –5.1 × 10–2.

Abstract:AbstractCircularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials have received significant attention in the field of fundamental science recently. These materials offer substantial advancement of technological applications, such as optical data storage, displays, and quantum communication. Various strategies have been proposed in self‐assembled materials consisting of inorganic, organic, and hybrid systems, particularly in the chiral orientationally ordered soft matter systems (e.g., chiral liquid crystals (LCs) and LC polymers). However, developing scientific approaches to achieve the pronounced and steerable circularly polarized light emission remains challenging. Herein, we present a comprehensive review on the recent development of CPL materials based on chiral LCs, including thermotropic LCs (cholesteric LCs and bent‐core LCs), lyotropic LCs (nanocellulose LCs and polyacetylene‐based LCs), and LC polymers (cholesteric LC‐based polymers, helical nanofibers, and helical network). In addition, the fundamental mechanisms, design principles, and potential applications based on these chiral LCs and LC polymers in soft matter systems are systematically reviewed. This review summarizes with a prospect on the latent challenges, which can strengthen our understanding of the basic principles of CPL in chiral orientationally ordered soft matter systems and provide a new insight into the progress in several fields, such as chemistry, materials science, optics, electronics, and biology.
