Abstract:In healthcare, artificial intelligence (AI) has been changing the way doctors and health experts take care of people. This paper will cover how AI is making major changes in the health care system, especially with nutrition. Various machine learning and deep learning algorithms have been developed to extract valuable information from healthcare data which help doctors, nutritionists, and health experts to make better decisions and make our lifestyle healthy. This paper provides an overview of the current state of AI applications in healthcare with a focus on the utilization of AI-driven recommender systems in nutrition. It will discuss the positive outcomes and challenges that arise when AI is used in this field. This paper addresses the challenges to develop AI recommender systems in healthcare, providing a well-rounded perspective on the complexities. Real-world examples and research findings are presented to underscore the tangible and significant impact AI recommender systems have in the field of healthcare, particularly in nutrition. The ongoing efforts of applying AI in nutrition lay the groundwork for a future where personalized recommendations play a pivotal role in guiding individuals toward healthier lifestyles.

Abstract:In the last decade, artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-mediated technologies have undergone rapid evolution in healthcare and medicine, from apps to computer software able to analyze medical images, robotic surgery and advanced data storage system. The main aim of the present commentary is to briefly describe the evolution of AI and its applications in healthcare, particularly in nutrition and clinical biochemistry. Indeed, AI is revealing itself to be an important tool in clinical nutrition by using telematic means to self-monitor various health metrics, including blood glucose levels, body weight, heart rate, fat percentage, blood pressure, activity tracking and calorie intake trackers. In particular, the application of the most common digital technologies used in the field of nutrition as well as the employment of AI in the management of diabetes and obesity, two of the most common nutrition-related pathologies worldwide, will be presented.

Abstract:In industry 4.0, where the automation and digitalization of entities and processes are fundamental, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a pivotal tool offering innovative solutions in various domains. In this context, nutrition, a critical aspect of public health, is no exception to the fields influenced by the integration of AI technology. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the current landscape of AI in nutrition, providing a deep understanding of the potential of AI, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) in nutrition sciences and highlighting eventual challenges and futuristic directions. A hybrid approach from the systematic literature review (SLR) guidelines and the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was adopted to systematically analyze the scientific literature from a search of major databases on artificial intelligence in nutrition sciences. A rigorous study selection was conducted using the most appropriate eligibility criteria, followed by a methodological quality assessment ensuring the robustness of the included studies. This review identifies several AI applications in nutrition, spanning smart and personalized nutrition, dietary assessment, food recognition and tracking, predictive modeling for disease prevention, and disease diagnosis and monitoring. The selected studies demonstrated the versatility of machine learning and deep learning techniques in handling complex relationships within nutritional datasets. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of AI applications in nutrition sciences and identifies challenges and opportunities. With the rapid advancement in AI, its integration into nutrition holds significant promise to enhance individual nutritional outcomes and optimize dietary recommendations. Researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals can utilize this research to design future projects and support evidence-based decision-making in AI for nutrition and dietary guidance.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology and artificial intelligence (AI), people have acquired the abilities and are encouraged to develop intelligent tools and software, which begins to shed light on intelligent and precise food nutrition. Despite the rapid development of such software, disparities still exist in terms of methodology, contents, and implementation strategies. Hence, a set of panoramic profiles is urgently needed to elucidate their values and guide their future development. Here a comprehensive review was conducted aiming to summarize and compare the objects, contents, intelligent algorithms, and functions realized by the already released software in current research. Consequently, 177 AI nutritionists in recent years were collected and analyzed. The advantages, limitations, and trends concerning their application scenarios were analyzed. It was found that AI nutritionists have been gradually advancing the production modes and efficiency of food recognition, dietary recording/monitoring, nutritional assessment, and nutrient/recipe recommendation. Most AI nutritionists have a relatively low level of intelligence. However, new trends combining advanced AI algorithms, intelligent sensors and big data are coming with new applications in real-time and precision nutrition. AI models concerning molecular-level behaviors are becoming the new focus to drive AI nutritionists. Multi-center and multi-level studies have also gradually been realized to be necessary.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to dramatically change the field of healthcare and nutrition by imitating human cognitive processes. This field involves smart machine-based applications, such as Machine Learning (ML), neural networks, and natural language processing to tackle and solve various issues. The current study's purpose is to highlight specific AI-based applications that are currently being employed in the fields of nutrition and healthcare. The published data from various search engines, such as PubMed/Medline, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct, were used for collecting the relevant data. The study depicts that there are several AI-based approaches and methods available for by improving diagnosis and treatment, lowering costs, and increasing access to healthcare facilities. Although AI cannot replace the personal touch, empathy, and emotional support provided by healthcare professionals. These approach assistances expanding rapidly are of great use. However, it is crucial to be careful and make sure that moral considerations are given top priority.

Abstract:Objective: Artificial intelligence (AI) provides people and professionals working in the field of participatory health informatics an opportunity to derive robust insights from a variety of online sources. The objective of this paper is to identify current state of the art and application areas of AI in the context of participatory health. Methods: A search was conducted across seven databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsychInfo, ACM Digital Library, IEEExplore, and SCOPUS), covering articles published since 2013. Additionally, clinical trials involving AI in participatory health contexts registered at clinicaltrials.gov were collected and analyzed. Results: Twenty-two articles and 12 trials were selected for review. The most common application of AI in participatory health was the secondary analysis of social media data: self-reported data including patient experiences with healthcare facilities, reports of adverse drug reactions, safety and efficacy concerns about over-the-counter medications, and other perspectives on medications. Other application areas included determining which online forum threads required moderator assistance, identifying users who were likely to drop out from a forum, extracting terms used in an online forum to learn its vocabulary, highlighting contextual information that is missing from online questions and answers, and paraphrasing technical medical terms for consumers. Conclusions: While AI for supporting participatory health is still in its infancy, there are a number of important research priorities that should be considered for the advancement of the field. Further research evaluating the impact of AI in participatory health informatics on the psychosocial wellbeing of individuals would help in facilitating the wider acceptance of AI into the healthcare ecosystem.

Abstract:With the continuous spread and globalization of infectious diseases, infectious disease prevention and control has become an important task for both countries and the world. Traditional infectious disease monitoring methods often rely on manual collection and analysis of data, which is inefficient and easily limited by human errors. However, the development of artificial intelligence and big data technology has provided new opportunities for infectious disease prevention and control. This article introduces the application of artificial intelligence in infectious disease monitoring. By using artificial intelligence algorithms and models, real-time monitoring and analysis of infectious disease data can be carried out, predicting the spread trend and risk of infectious diseases. This helps to detect and report infectious disease outbreaks, thus taking corresponding prevention and control measures and reducing the spread and impact of the epidemic. At the same time, this article explores the application of big data in infectious disease prevention and control. By using big data technology, in-depth mining and analysis of patient case data, virus gene sequences, transmission chain information, and other data can be carried out to discover the characteristics and patterns of infectious diseases, and be used to build an infectious disease warning system to predict and prevent the occurrence of infectious diseases in advance. Finally, this article discusses the application cases of artificial intelligence and big data in infectious disease prevention and control. By combining artificial intelligence and big data technology, the entire process of monitoring and management of infectious diseases can be achieved.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI), since its inception, has revolutionized multiple sectors, including healthcare in the 20th century, and has applications in data interpretation, leading to advancements in diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical decision-making. AI is referred to as the capability of a software program to accurately analyze extrinsic information and utilize it for accomplishing desired goals and objectives through appropriate flexibility. It makes use of complicated operative algorithms to excel in human learning potential with overwhelming abilities to interpret large sets of data. The scope and implications of AI are consistently amplifying and have contributed significantly in nearly all phases of human life, especially healthcare. The integration of AI-related advancements would surely ameliorate the delivery of healthcare by allowing its accessibility, affordability, and level of care provided. For instance, reading CT scans is feasible by both AI as well as a radiologist. The screening of Tuberculosis is possible through AI via Chest X-rays with comparability in performance as molecular testing and mammography scans can predict the onset of breast cancer prior to the appearance of the ocular signs. Therefore, AI has been realized as one of the core areas by researchers and the government for public health benefit. For the same reason, it is imperative to adopt an ethically sound policy framework for guiding the further development of AI-based technologies and their application in public health. AI-based interpretations themselves cannot be fully trusted for their diagnostic decisions and judgements, and hence, it is vital to assess their accountability through all phases of development and deployment in the field of health. This article emphasizes the advancements in AI-based technologies, their assistance in public healthcare delivery systems, and their merits and demerits. It also explores the various ethical directives that need to be adhered to while utilizing it for public health welfare.

Abstract:Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing non-communicable diseases, becoming an important public health concern worldwide as well as in China. Currently, China has the largest population living with diabetes. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a fast-growing field and its applications to diabetes could enable the delivery of better management services for people with diabetes. This perspective summarized the latest findings of digital technologies and AI use in the following areas of diabetes care, mainly including screening and risk predictions of diabetes and diabetic complications, precise monitoring and intervention combined with new technologies, and mobile health application in self-management support for people with diabetes. Challenges to promote further use of AI in diabetes care included data standardization and integration, performance of AI-based medical devices, motivation of patients, and sensitivity to privacy. In summary, although the AI applications in clinical practice is still at an early stage, we are moving toward a new paradigm for diabetes care with the rapid development and emerging application of AI.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems doing tasks that usually need human intelligence. AI is constantly changing and is revolutionizing the healthcare field, including nutrition. This review's purpose is four-fold: (i) to investigate AI's role in nutrition research; (ii) to identify areas in nutrition using AI; (iii) to understand AI's future potential impact; (iv) to investigate possible concerns about AI's use in nutrition research. Eight databases were searched: PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Agricola, Scopus, IEEE Explore, Google Scholar and Cochrane. A total of 1737 articles were retrieved, of which 22 were included in the review. Article screening phases included duplicates elimination, title-abstract selection, full-text review, and quality assessment. The key findings indicated AI's role in nutrition is at a developmental stage, focusing mainly on dietary assessment and less on malnutrition prediction, lifestyle interventions, and diet-related diseases comprehension. Clinical research is needed to determine AI's intervention efficacy. The ethics of AI use, a main concern, remains unresolved and needs to be considered for collateral damage prevention to certain populations. The studies' heterogeneity in this review limited the focus on specific nutritional areas. Future research should prioritize specialized reviews in nutrition and dieting for a deeper understanding of AI's potential in human nutrition.

Abstract:The rapid emergence and global spread of infectious diseases pose significant challenges to public health. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have shown great potential in enhancing our ability to prevent, detect, and control infectious disease outbreaks. However, as a growing interdisciplinarity field, a gap exists between AI scientists and infectious disease biologists, limiting the full potential of AI in this field. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the applications of AI in infectious diseases, focusing on the progress along the four stages of outbreaks: pre-pandemic, early pandemic, pandemic, and periodic epidemic stages. We discuss AI methods in early detection and risk assessment, outbreak surveillance, diagnosis and control, and understanding pathogenic mechanisms. We also propose the primary limitations, challenges, and potential solutions associated with AI tools in public health contexts while examining crucial considerations for future enhanced implementation. By harnessing the power of AI, we can develop more precise and targeted strategies to mitigate the burden of infectious diseases and improve global health.

Abstract:Big data is a new information technology revolution to promote the progress of human beings, which brings a great change in the field of public health. Nutrition science, as a branch of public health, has also entered the era of big data. We collected and analyzed the application of big data in nutrition science. It concluded six categories, e.g. electronic database management of food components, sharing of nutrition survey and monitoring information, food safety and risk assessment, assessment of application program of "nutrition" in mobile phone, wearable device data mining and early warning of the epidemic of chronic diseases respectively. At the same time, by considering relevant theory of big data and actual situation in China, we discussed the impact of big data on chronic disease prevention, disease prediction, personalized health management, food risk assessment and other aspects, which will provide a new perspective to promote the development of nutrition and health in China.

Abstract:Personalised nutrition uses individual data to optimise dietary recommendations for better health results. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) provides an innovative solution to the issues of this industry. AI can process massive and complicated datasets, such as genetic, phenotypic, and behavioural data, to generate highly personalised nutrition recommendations. Machine learning methods, ranging from grouping and prediction to deep learning, allow for the discovery of food patterns, health effects, and individualised nutritional requirements. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) aims to mimic human cognitive functions. It is bringing a paradigm shift to healthcare, powered by increasing availability of healthcare data and rapid progress of analytics techniques. We survey the current status of AI applications in healthcare and discuss its future. AI can be applied to various types of healthcare data (structured and unstructured). Popular AI techniques include machine learning methods for structured data, such as the classical support vector machine and neural network, and the modern deep learning, as well as natural language processing for unstructured data. Major disease areas that use AI tools include cancer, neurology and cardiology. We then review in more details the AI applications in stroke, in the three major areas of early detection and diagnosis, treatment, as well as outcome prediction and prognosis evaluation. We conclude with discussion about pioneer AI systems, such as IBM Watson, and hurdles for real-life deployment of AI.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are complex and rapidly evolving, and thus often poorly understood, but have potentially profound implications for public health. We offer a primer for public health professionals that explains some of the key concepts involved and examines how these applications might be used in the response to a future pandemic. They include early outbreak detection, predictive modelling, healthcare management, risk communication, and health surveillance. Artificial intelligence applications, especially predictive algorithms, have the ability to anticipate outbreaks by integrating diverse datasets such as social media, meteorological data, and mobile phone movement data. Artificial intelligence‐powered tools can also optimise healthcare delivery by managing the allocation of resources and reducing healthcare workers' exposure to risks. In resource distribution, they can anticipate demand and optimise logistics, while AI‐driven robots can minimise physical contact in healthcare settings. Artificial intelligence also shows promise in supporting public health decision‐making by simulating the social and economic impacts of different policy interventions. These simulations help policymakers evaluate complex scenarios such as lockdowns and resource allocation. Additionally, it can enhance public health messaging, with AI‐generated health communications shown to be more effective than human‐generated messages in some cases. However, there are risks, such as privacy concerns, biases in models, and the potential for 'false confirmations', where AI reinforces incorrect decisions. Despite these challenges, we argue that AI will become increasingly important in public health crises, but only if integrated thoughtfully into existing systems and processes.
