Abstract:Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a popular additive manufacturing technology that can produce many metallic engineering components. In this study, the strategy of feedstock modification was implemented to investigate the influence of external additives (carbon nanotubes) on intergranular corrosion resistance. Feedstock modification was carried out following ball milling of commercial 316L stainless steel powders with 1 vol.% and 2 vol.% carbon nanotubes (CNT), and, later, LPBF was performed on the modified feedstock. The LPBF-316L, LPBF-316L/CNT-1, and LPBF-316L/CNT-2 were sensitized at 675°C for 24 h, and, later, the intergranular corrosion resistance of the LPBF specimens was investigated following ASTM A262 practice-A standard. The CNT addition has deteriorated the intergranular corrosion resistance of LPBF-316L, which could be due to the formation of M 23 C 6 carbides along the grain boundaries. The altered microstructure due to the CNT addition and sensitization was correlated with the deteriorated intergranular corrosion resistance of LPBF-316L/CNT.
