Abstract:Performance of hole transporting material (HTM) plays a fundamental role in estimating overall efficiency of perovskite solar cell (PSC). Dopant free HTMs with high intrinsic hole mobility and stability have been emerged as a fascinating choice for production of highly efficient and stable PSCs. Here, we report facile synthesis and implementation of a novel tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivative as a dopant free HTM for efficient and ambient stable PSC. The PSC based on dopant free TTF HTM shows remarkable photovoltaic efficiency of 15.66% which is one of highest value for any TTF based HTM. Beside efficiency, PSC based on TTF HTM shows only about 16% decline in initial efficiency even after 45 days storage in ambient conditions without any encapsulation which verifies its excellent ambient stability and hydrophobicity. Furthermore, various physical, electrochemical, photovoltaic and optical parameters of TTF HTM are investigated by highly specialized characterization tools. We affirm these results will be helpful for developing novel HTMs for highly efficient and stable PSCs in future.

Abstract:A tetraphenylethene derivative (TPE-4DPA) was synthesized and applied as the hole transporting material for planar perovskite solar cells. The use of TPE-4DPA for device fabrication requires no oxidization process and lower amount of additives, delivering an overall power conversion efficiency of 12.81%. Remarkably, even in the absence of the additives, the solar cell based on the pristine TPE-4DPA still generates a J(sc) as high as 20.50 mA cm(-2), and moderate PCE of 9.12%. Using no additives is of critical importance, which simultaneously increases the stability of the devices and reduces the fabrication cost of perovskite solar cells, when compared to devices using Li-TFSI doped Spiro-OMeTAD.

Abstract:Hole transport materials (HTMs) have a critical impact on the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Especially, the dopant-free HTMs could avoid the usage of hygroscopic dopants and reduce costs, which are important for device stability. Most of the current organic dopant-free HTMs are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-based planar conjugated structures. Yet, the synthesis of conjugated fused heterocycles is often complicated. In this work, intramolecular non-covalent interaction is introduced to construct two organic HTMs (DCT and DTC), which can be facilely obtained through simple reactions. Compared to DTC with hexyl chain on the central benzene ring, DCT with hexyloxy chains shows better planarity in the core structure, as a result of the intramolecular non-covalent interactions between oxygen on hexyloxy and sulfur atom on the adjacent thiophene, as reflected from its single crystal structure. Moreover, DCT in a pristine state shows a decent hole mobility comparable to the doped Spiro-OMeTAD. Ultimately, conventional devices using dopant-free DCT as HTM show a high efficiency of 22.50%, with excellent long-term stability, and light and thermal stability. The results show that the noncovalent interaction is a useful and simple design strategy for dopant-free HTMs, that can effectively improve the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

Abstract:We demonstrate efficient planar perovskite solar cells using a dopant-free donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated small molecule as a hole transport material. The photovoltaic cell reaches a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.9%, which is comparable to or even better than that of the devices using the traditional doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N, N'-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) hole transport material under equivalent conditions. We ascribe the high performance to the excellent charge transporting properties of the D-A conjugated small molecule. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL), transient photocurrent response, and impedance spectroscopy characterization indicate that this D-A conjugated small molecule plays a key role in hole collection and extraction in perovskite based photovoltaic devices. The dopant-free D-A small molecule hole transport material used here not only improves the efficiency, but also facilitates the fabrication process and thus potentially reduces the fabrication cost of perovskite solar cells.
A Coplanar Π‐extended Quinoxaline Based Hole‐Transporting Material Enabling over 21 % Efficiency for Dopant‐Free Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:AbstractDeveloping dopant‐free hole transporting materials (HTMs) is of vital importance for addressing the notorious stability issue of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, efficient dopant‐free HTMs are scarce. Herein, we improve the performance of dopant‐free HTMs featuring with a quinoxaline core via rational π‐extension. Upon incorporating rotatable or chemically fixed thienyl substitutes on the pyrazine ring, the resulting molecular HTMs TQ3 and TQ4 show completely different molecular arrangement as well as charge transporting capabilities. Comparing with TQ3, the coplanar π‐extended quinoxaline based TQ4 endows enriched intermolecular interactions and stronger π–π stacking, thus achieving a higher hole mobility of 2.08×10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1. It also shows matched energy levels and high thermal stability for application in PSCs. Planar n‐i‐p structured PSCs employing dopant‐free TQ4 as HTM exhibits power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 21 % with excellent long‐term stability.

Abstract:A novel 4,4'-dimethoxy triphenylamine (donor), thiophene (bridge), and fluorine substituted benzothiadiazole (FBTD, acceptor) based molecule with D-A-D structure was synthesized via two steps from commercial precursors. The absorption, emission, thermal and electrochemical properties of the molecule was examined. The compound possesses planar molecular configuration, suitable energy level, high hole mobility and excellent thermal stability. When used as dopant-free hole transport material (HTM) in planar perovskite solar cell (PSC), the devices obtained a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.9% with good ambient stability by maintaining 87% of the initial efficiency after 480 h degradation. Those results enable us further understand the potential of FBTD as a promising building block of HTM for highly efficient PSCs.

Abstract:The development of low-cost and efficient hole transport materials (HTMs) is important for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Comparing with the widely studied D-A-D and D-π-D linear-type small molecule HTMs, DTB-FL with a D-A-π-A-D molecular design is proposed, featuring facile synthesis and excellent optoelectronic properties. Moreover, the HTM with efficient surface passivation effects and proper energy level alignment at the hole extraction interface effectively inhibits recombination loss and improves the charge collection property. As a result, the champion efficiencies of 21.5% and 19.6% for active areas of 0.09 and 1.0 cm 2, respectively, with superior operational stability are achieved by using DTB-FL HTM. In addition, DTB-FL can also be used as efficient HTM for all-inorganic PSCs, producing an impressive PCE of 17.0% with a high Voc of 1.30 V. These results underscore the promising potential of the D-A-π-A-D molecular design in preparing low-cost dopant-free HTMs toward stable and efficient PSCs.

Abstract:Significant efforts have been devoted to developing new dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Fluoranthene is one typical cyclopentene-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a rigid planarized structure, and thus could be an ideal building block to construct dopant-free HTMs, which have not been reported yet. Here, we report a new and simple synthetic method to prepare unreported 2,3-dicyano-fluoranthene through a Diels-Alder reaction between dibenzofulvene and tetracyanoethylene, and demonstrate that it can serve as an efficient electron-withdrawing unit for constructing donor-acceptor (D-A) type HTMs. This novel building block not only endows the resulting molecules with suitable energy levels, but also enables highly ordered and strong molecular packing in solid states, both of which could facilitate hole extraction and transport. Thus with dopant-free HTMs, impressive efficiencies of 18.03% and 17.01% which are associated with enhanced stability can be achieved based on conventional n-i-p and inverted p-i-n PVSCs respectively, outperforming most organic dopant-free HTMs reported so far.

Abstract:D-A-D typed hole transport materials have been designed and synthesized with benzothiadiazole acceptor unit by introducing electron-withdrawing group fluorine atoms and electron-donating group alkoxy as side group. It is found that the three hole transport materials have a low-lying HOMO energy level and higher hole mobility. Furthermore, when these materials are applied in perovskite solar cell, the higher hole mobility (1.02 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) make the B3, which the fluorine atoms on core acceptor without dopants, get a power conversion efficiency of 12.1%, while spiro-OMeTAD based dopant-free perovskite solar cell only shows a 7.96% efficiency. In addition, the long-term stability of the perovskite solar cells based all the three hole transport materials improved greatly, especially B1-based cells show a favorable long-term stability, which keeps a 90% initial efficiency after 10 days at a relative humidity of 30%. Therefore, the D-A-D typed hole transport materials have a good application prospects in the field of perovskite solar cells with the incorporation of appropriate side group.
Dopant-free dicyanofluoranthene-based hole transporting material with low cost enables efficient flexible perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Low cost, highly efficient dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) are highly desirable for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Herein, a facile synthetic route is designed to prepare two new D-A-D-type HTMs (BTF5 and BTF6) with low lab synthetic costs by making dicyanofluoranthene as the key intermediate. The rational structure modifications of donor subunits enable a significant optimization of photophysical, charge transporting properties and final device performance for resulting HTMs. BTF6 with meta-methoxyl substitutions exhibits more matched energy levels with perovskites and much enhanced hole mobility in comparison to BTF5 with para-methoxyl substitutions, thereby leading to significantly distinct device efficiencies as dopant-free HTMs in inverted PVSCs, 20.34% for BTF6 vs. 11.42% for BTF5. In addition, the unsatisfactory crystallinity of perovskite films atop BTF5 is found to be another major reason for its significantly poor device efficiency. More encouragingly, it is further demonstrated that BTF6 can be suitable for fabricating dopant-free flexible PVSCs towards a promising PCE over 18% with a low hysteresis, which is the highest value for flexible devices based on small molecule HTMs, and even can be comparable to the best PCEs reported from self-doped PEDOT:PSS.

Dopant‐Free Hole Transport Materials Based on a Large Conjugated Electron‐Deficient Core for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Hole transport materials (HTMs) play a significant role in device efficiencies and long-term stabilities of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, two simple dopant-free HTMs are designed with a large conjugated electron-deficient core. On the one hand, a large coplanar backbone endows enhanced π–π stacking and reduced hole hopping distance. On the other hand, the incorporation of electron-deficient unit can easily tune the energy levels as well as increase hole mobilities. Combining these two advantages together, 12,13-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,9-diundecyl-12,13-dihydro[1,2,5]thiadiazole[3,4-e]thieno[2″,3″:4,5]thieno[2′,3′:4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-g]thieno[2′,3′:4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole is chosen as the large electron-deficient core to construct two novel dopant-free HTMs, Y6-T and Y-T. Both Y6-T and Y-T behave suitable highest occupied molecular orbital levels, good hole mobilities, as well as strong hydrophobicities. After careful device optimization with a passivation agent, Y-T delivers an impressive power conversion efficiency of 20.29%, which is higher than that of Y6-T (18.82%) and doped spiro-OMeTAD (19.24%). Moreover, PSCs based on Y6-T and Y-T show much better long-term stabilities than spiro-OMeTAD due to the intrinsic hydrophobicity. Therefore, this work provides a promising candidate as well as a useful design strategy for exploring dopant-free HTMs, which may pave the way for the commercialization of PSCs.

Benzodithiophene‐Thienothiadiazole Copolymers as Dopant‐Free Hole‐Transporting Layers Enabling Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The exploration of dopant‐free hole‐transporting materials (HTM) with excellent optoelectronic properties and defect passivation ability is of great significance for simultaneously improving the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, two donor–acceptor (D–A) type conjugated polymers PTTDZ‐F and PTTDZ‐Cl with alternating benzodithiophene (BDT) and thienothiadiazole (TTD) units are successfully developed with desirable hole mobilities and conductivities. The formation of non‐covalent interaction (S···N) between thiophene bridge and TTD units significantly improved the co‐planarity of the molecular backbone and promoted the intramolecular charge‐transfer from BDT to TTD. The hydrophobicity and energy levels of the polymers are finely regulated via introducing different halogen atoms on the BDT moiety. Moreover, the functional groups in polymers efficiently passivate the surface charged traps in perovskite. As a result, champion power conversion efficiencies of 21.50% and 22.20% along with negligible hysteresis have been achieved for devices based on dopant‐free PTTDZ‐F and PTTDZ‐Cl, respectively. The unencapsulated devices also demonstrate excellent long‐term operational stability. Over 93% of their initial efficiencies can be retained after 320 h of maximum output power point tracking under 1 sun illumination (white light LED array). Abstract:Organic hole transport materials (HTMs) are extensively studied in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, due to the inherently low charge carrier mobility, chemical dopants are often required to increase mobility and achieve high power conversion efficiency. Unfortunately, the use of dopants not only brings high costs, but also accelerates the degradation of perovskite, severely reducing the stability of perovskite solar cells. Therefore, developing efficient dopant-free HTMs has become a big challenge. Here, two linear molecules DTTTP-DPA and DTTTP-TPA were designed and synthesized, with diethyl 2,5-bis(thieno [3,2-b]thiophen-2-yl)terephthalate (DTTTP) as the core structure, methoxydiphenylamine/methoxytriphenylamine as the end group, respectively. Compared to diphenylamine, the triphenylamine end group endowed DTTTP-TPA with a longer conjugation length and a lower HOMO level. The longer conjugation is more conducive to charge transporting. While the lower HOMO level due to the weaker electron donating ability of triphenylamine, is potential to achieve a higher open-circuit voltage when used in PSCs. In addition, the carbonyl group in molecular structure could passivate the defect at perovskite/hole transport layer (HTL) interface. As a result, the dopant-free DTTTP-TPA device shows a high photovoltaic performance of 21.62%. At room temperature (30% relative humidity), the initial PCE of the unencapsulated device remains above 93% after 1000 h, showing excellent stability. Our work demonstrates that constructing linear type molecular structure with extended conjugation is an efficient way to enhance hole mobility and is promising to obtain dopant-free HTMs.

Abstract:Dopant‐free hole transport materials (HTMs) are essential for commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the state‐of‐the‐art PSCs with small molecule dopant‐free HTMs are below 20%. Herein, a simple dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]pyrrol‐cored small molecule, DTP‐C6Th, is reported as a promising dopant‐free HTM. Compared with commonly used spiro‐OMeTAD, DTP‐C6Th exhibits a similar energy level, a better hole mobility of 4.18 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1, and more efficient hole extraction, enabling efficient and stable PSCs with a dopant‐free HTM. With the addition of an ultrathin poly(methyl methacrylate) passivation layer and properly tuning the composition of the perovskite absorber layer, a champion PCE of 21.04% is achieved, which is the highest value for small molecule dopant‐free HTM based PSCs to date. Additionally, PSCs using the DTP‐C6Th HTM exhibit significantly improved long‐term stability compared with the conventional cells with the metal additive doped spiro‐OMeTAD HTM. Therefore, this work provides a new candidate and effective device engineering strategy for achieving high PCEs with dopant‐free HTMs.

Abstract:Developing low-cost, efficient, and stable dopant-free hole-transporting materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) is essential to their commercial deployment. Herein, the synthesis of a novel spirofluorene-dithiolane based small molecular HTM, SFDT-TDM, through facile and low-cost synthetic routes is reported. The CH…π interactions in adjacent SFDT-TDM are beneficial for high hole mobility and the methylthio groups in SFDT-TDM can serve as Lewis bases to passivate the defects on the surface of perovskite films, leading to suppressed non-radiative recombination and enhanced charge extraction at the perovskite/HTM interface. As a result, CsxFA1−xPbI3 based PVSCs with SFDT-TDM as the HTM realize champion power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 21.7% and 20.3% for small-area (0.04 cm2) and large-area (1.0 cm2) devices with negligible photocurrent hysteresis, respectively. Additionally, all-inorganic CsPbI3−xBrx based PVSCs with SFDT-TDM demonstrate an impressive PCE of 17.1% along with excellent stability. This work highlights the great potential of the spirofluorene core for exploring low-cost and dopant-free HTMs for PVSCs with high efficiency and stability.

Dopant-free dithieno[3′,2':3,4;2′′,3'':5,6]benzo[1,2-d]imidazole-based hole-transporting materials for efficient perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Three dopant-free hole-transporting materials (HTMs) M1−3 containing dithieno[3′,2':3,4;2″,3'':5,6]benzo[1,2-d]imidazole (DTBI) or phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (PTI) were designed, synthesized and applied in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), where DTBI and PTI were first introduced as a core structure in the HTMs. Different steric groups (4-methoxybenzene and 4,4′-dimethoxytriphenylamine) were introduced as the periphery groups connected at carbon-2 (C-2) position of imidazole moiety. Accordingly, the relationship between chemical structure and function was systematically investigated with respect to the fused cores and periphery groups, by the measurements of the energy levels, hole mobility, film-forming morphology, extraction and transfer of photo-generated holes, and photovoltaic performances. It was found that M1−2 with DTBI as a core structure exhibited suitable energy levels, higher hole mobility and uniform film-forming morphology, as well as efficient extraction and transfer of photo-generated holes at the perovskite/HTM interfaces. The PSCs using M2 as dopant-free HTM exhibited an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.9% with a negligible hysteresis, surpassing that of the doped spiro-OMeTAD-based standard device (16.4%) under the same testing conditions. Importantly, the unencapsulated PSCs based on dopant-free M2 presented much higher stability than that of doped spiro-OMeTAD. This work provides a promising strategy to construct dopant-free HTMs with both high efficiency and high stability by using DTBI as a core structure.

Abstract:Two A‐D‐A type 2D small molecules with longitudinal conjugate extension using triphenylamine groups as side chains are successfully developed. The 2D small molecules show a dominant face‐on orientation and better hole transport mobility. A champion efficiency of 21.44% is achieved using the dopant‐free 2D small molecule hole transport material in perovskite solar cells along with improved stability. Developing dopant‐free hole transport materials (HTMs) to replace Spiro‐OMeTAD is a challenging but urgent issue for commercialization of state‐of‐the‐art n‐i‐p structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, this work proposes an effective two‐dimensional conjugate engineering strategy to tune molecular stacking orientation and improve the hole mobility of dopant‐free small molecule HTMs. For the first time, triphenylamine (TPA) groups are incorporated as side chains of benzo [1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) unit to extend the longitudinal conjugate, achieving two donor‐acceptor‐acceptor type 2D small molecules, namely XF2 and XF3, which show a dominant face‐on orientation and better hole transport mobility than the linear small molecule XF1. The incorporation of alkoxy Lewis base groups makes XF3 a more effective defect passivator for perovskite surfaces. As a result, the PSCs using pristine XF3 HTM show a dramatically improved efficiency of 20.59% along with improved long‐term stability compared to that of XF1 HTM (power conversion efficiency (PCE) = 18.84%). A champion efficiency of 21.44% is achieved through device engineering for dopant‐free XF3‐based PSCs. The results show that the building block with longitudinal conjugate extension in small molecules plays an essential role in the face‐on orientation morphology and elucidates a key design rule for the dopant‐free small molecule HTMs for high‐performance PSCs.

Abstract:Two novel hole transporting materials (HTMs) bearing thermally cross-linkable styryl groups were developed and applied for perovskite solar cells. These HTMs could be in situ cross-linked under mild temperature. The resulted cross-linked HTMs form smooth, solvent-resistant films, which enables the subsequent spin-coating of perovskite layer. In addition, the fluorination approach successfully leads to strong interactions between HTM, formamidine (FA) and lead in perovskite, resulting in the passivation of the perovskite film. The device using the HTM with fluorine moieties (HTM-F) showed higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.51% than that of the device using fluorine-free HTM (HTM-H) of 19.07%. Moreover, the device with HTM-F exhibits better stability, retaining 90% of the initial PCE after 2000 h under ambient air and 91% of the initial PCE after 1000 h under 85 °C heating.
