Abstract:The development of efficient and sustainable methods for carbon-phosphorus bond formation is of great importance due to the wide application of organophosphorus compounds in chemistry, material sciences and biology. Previous C-H phosphorylation reactions under nonelectrochemical or electrochemical conditions require directing groups, transition metal catalysts, or chemical oxidants and suffer from limited scope. Herein we disclose a catalyst- and external oxidant-free, electrochemical C-H phosphorylation reaction of arenes in continuous flow for the synthesis of aryl phosphorus compounds. The C-P bond is formed through the reaction of arenes with anodically generated P-radical cations, a class of reactive intermediates remained unexplored for synthesis despite intensive studies of P-radicals. The high reactivity of the P-radical cations coupled with the mild conditions of the electrosynthesis ensures not only efficient reactions of arenes of diverse electronic properties but also selective late-stage functionalization of complex natural products and bioactive compounds. The synthetic utility of the electrochemical method is further demonstrated by the continuous production of 55.0 grams of one of the phosphonate products. Synthesis of aryl phosphorus compounds with electron-withdrawing substituents on the arene is difficult to do simply. Here the authors show a method to form aryl carbon-phosphorus bonds through electrochemistry, without requiring any catalyst or external oxidant.
Decarboxylative Selective Phosphorylation of Aliphatic Acids: A Transition-Metal- and Photocatalyst-Free Avenue to Dialkyl and Trialkyl Phosphine Oxides from White Phosphorus

Abstract:Developing practical and mild strategies for the direct functionalization of white phosphorus (P4 ) without chlorination is an appealing but formidable challenge. To this end, we report a breakthrough in the preparation of structurally diverse dialkylphosphines and trialkylphosphines that rely on the successive generation of carbon-centered radicals from N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) esters and the controllable alkylation of the P4 molecule under transition-metal- and photocatalyst-free conditions. To facilitate separation and prevent product losses during purification, the corresponding oxidation products dialkylphosphine oxides (DAPOs) and trialkylphosphine oxides (TAPOs) were isolated. This photoinduced phosphorylation reaction features one-pot operation, high product selectivity, and tolerates a broad range of alkyl NHPI esters, including derivatives of complex natural products and pharmaceuticals. Further diversified transformation of DAPOs to construct P-F, P-C, P-N, and P-O bonds was also demonstrated.

Abstract:We describe the direct synthesis of organophosphorus compounds from ubiquitous aryl and vinyl carboxylic acids via decarbonylative palladium catalysis. The catalytic system shows excellent scope and tolerates a wide range of functional groups (>50 examples). The utility of this powerful methodology is highlighted in the late-stage derivatization directly exploiting the presence of the prevalent carboxylic acid functional group. DFT studies provided insight into the origin of high bond activation selectivity and P(O)-H isomerization pathway.

Abstract:Organophosphorus compounds are important in everyday applications ranging from agriculture to medicine and are used in flame retardants and other materials. Although organophosphorus chemistry is known as a mature and specialized area, researchers would like to develop new methods for synthesizing organophosphorus compounds to improve the safety and sustainability of these chemical processes. The vast majority of compounds that contain a phosphorus-carbon bond are manufactured using phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) as an intermediate. However, these reactions require chlorine, and researchers would like to avoid the use of PCl3 and develop safer chemistry that also decreases energy consumption and minimizes waste. Researchers have already proposed and discussed two primary strategies based on elemental phosphorus (P4 or Pred) or on phosphine (PH3) as alternatives to PCl3. However, phosphinates, an important class of phosphorus compounds defined as any compound with a phosphorus atom attached to two oxygens, R(1)R(2)P(O)(OR) (R(1)/R(2) = hydrogen/carbon), offer another option. This Account discusses the previously neglected potential of these phosphinates as replacements of PCl3 for the preparation of organophosphorus compounds. Because of their strong reductive properties, industry currently uses the simplest members of this class of compounds, hypophosphites, for one major application: electroless plating. In comparison with other proposed PCl3 surrogates, hypophosphorous derivatives can offer improved stability, lower toxicity, higher solubility, and increased atom economy. When their reducing power is harnessed to form phosphorus-carbon or phosphorus-oxygen bonds, these compounds are also rich and versatile precursors to organophosphorus compounds. This Account examines the use of transition metal-catalyzed reactions such as cross-coupling and hydrophosphinylation for phosphorus-carbon bond formation. Because the most important industrial organophosphorus compounds include compounds triply or quadruply bound to oxygen, I also discuss controlled transfer hydrogenation for phosphorus-oxygen bond formation. I hope that this Account will further promote research in this novel and exciting yet much underdeveloped area of phosphinate activation.

Abstract:A green and effective approach for the synthesis of structurally diversed α-hydroxyphosphonates via hydrophosphonylation of aldehydes under solventless conditions and promoted by biosourced catalysts, called ecocatalysts "Eco-MgZnOx" is presented. Ecocatalysts were prepared from Zn-hyperaccumulating plant species Arabidopsis halleri, with simple and benign thermal treatment of leaves rich in Zn, and without any further chemical treatment. The elemental composition and structure of Eco-MgZnOx were characterized by MP-AES, XRPD, HRTEM, and STEM-EDX techniques. These analyses revealed a natural richness in two unusual and valuable mixed zinc-magnesium and iron-magnesium oxides. The ecocatalysts were employed in this study to demonstrate their potential use in hydrophosphonylation of aldehydes, leading to various α-hydroxyphosphonate derivatives, which are critical building blocks in the modern chemical industry. Computational chemistry was performed to help discriminate the role of some of the constituents of the mixed oxide ecocatalysts. High conversions, broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and easy purification of the final products together with simplicity of the preparation of the ecocatalysts are the major advantages of the presented protocol. Additionally, Eco-MgZnOx-P could be recovered and reused for up to five times.

Abstract:Organic phosphorothioates are a class of organic compounds containing the C–S–P structural motif, known for their unique physical and chemical properties. These compounds hold significant value in various fields, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and materials science, particularly playing a crucial role in agrochemicals and nucleotide modification. Traditionally, phosphorothioates have been synthesized primarily through the formation of P–S bonds or direct phosphorothioation reactions from organic phosphorus sources such as P(O)H and P(O)SH. In recent years, new strategies utilizing inorganic phosphorus sources, such as P 4 S 10 and white phosphorus (P 4 ), have emerged as a dynamic area of research. This review highlights the latest advancements in the synthesis of phosphorothioates and phosphoropolythioates from inorganic phosphorus sources, focusing on their applicability, mechanisms, current limitations, and potential future directions.

Abstract:A versatile and environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of various organophosphorus compounds have been developed using a heterogeneous catalysis technology. We have synthesized a series of the alpha-hydroxyphosphonates, a biologically important class of compounds, via the Pudovik reaction between dialkylphosphite and aldehydes or ketones using sodium-modified fluorapatite (Na@FAP) as a highly efficient basic solid catalyst under solventless conditions at room temperature. Catalyst reuse, ease of separation of the pure product, and high yields are some of the unique features of this process.

Abstract:Here an unprecedented formal deformylative phosphonylation is disclosed. Under the catalysis of 1 mol % 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(diphenylamino)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4DPAIPN) and the presence of 200 mol % triethylamine as additive, 4-alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs), derived from aldehydes, underwent phosphonylation smoothly with 9-fluorenyl o-phenylene phosphite, allowing facile synthesis of alkylphosphonates. This strategy is applicable to primary, secondary, and even tertiary DHPs, and exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, thereby enabling the late-stage phosphonylation of a series of naturally-ocurring bioactive and biorelevant molecules.

Abstract:Structurally constraining p-block elements has become a powerful strategy for bond activation chemistry with main group compounds. Traditionally, this approach focuses on mononuclear centers, yet applying structural constraints to systems with element-element bonds remains underexplored. In this study, we introduce a cation featuring a structural constraint-elongated P–P bond that spontaneously adds to unactivated alkynes, alkenes, aldehydes, and ketones. Despite its positive charge, the surprisingly apolar P–P+ bond promotes phosphinophosphination via a concerted, highly regio- and diastereoselective mechanism. This unique reactivity opens pathways to novel seven-membered phosphorus heterocycles with customizable optical properties and a structurally varied array of ligands for transition metal coordination.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P)-containing polymers (PCPs) are functional materials that have attracted extensive attention from both academia and industry. PCPs are widely used in biomedical and structural materials owing to their biodegradabilities and flame-retardant properties. Currently, the most common raw materials for the synthesis of PCPs are phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) and its derivatives (phosphorus oxychloride and phosphorus pentachloride). However, the preparation of PCPs using PCl3 not only causes serious acid pollution and generates numerous Cl-containing solid by-products but also poses safety risks. Therefore, using a PCl3-free route for the preparation of PCPs is a requirement for sustainability. Herein, progress in the synthesis of PCPs via PCl3-free (or non-PCl3) routes is reviewed for the first time.

Abstract:The synthesis methods of most parts of phosphorus (P)-based flame retardants apply harmful and toxic reagents, and the formation of byproducts is often inevitable. The synthesis of P-based flame retardants (FRs) according to the green chemistry approach has been investigated. Two FRs have been prepared via an addition reaction of phosphorus-pentoxide and alcohols. These molecules can be used as additive FRs after salt formation or as precursors for flame retardant surface treatments of natural fibers. The flame retardant efficacy of the synthesized additives was assessed in a bioepoxy resin system through UL-94 and limiting oxygen index tests, while their mode of action was determined by the investigation of gas-phase degradation products and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The prepared adduct was also used in the formulation of a reactive flame-retardant surface treatment for cellulosic fibers. In TGA tests, the treated fibers produced significant amounts of char residue.

Abstract:In pursuit of a more sustainable production of phosphorous acid (H3PO3), a versatile chemical with phosphorus in the +3 oxidation state, we herein report that condensed phosphates can be employed to phosphorylate hydride reagents under solvent-free mechanochemical conditions to furnish phosphite (HPO3 2-). Using potassium hydride as the hydride source, sodium trimetaphosphate (Na3P3O9), triphosphate (Na5P3O10), pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7), fluorophosphate (Na2PO3F), and polyphosphate ("(NaPO3) n ") engendered phosphite in optimized yields of 44, 58, 44, 84, and 55% based on total P content, respectively. Formation of overreduced products including hypophosphite (H2PO2 -) was identified as a competing process, and mechanistic investigations revealed that hydride attack on in-situ-generated phosphorylated phosphite species is a potent pathway for overreduction. The phosphite generated from our method was easily isolated in the form of barium phosphite, a useful intermediate for production of phosphorous acid. This method circumvents the need to pass through white phosphorus (P4) as a high-energy intermediate and mitigates involvement of environmentally hazardous chemicals. A bioproduced polyphosphate was found to be a viable starting material for the production of phosphite. These results demonstrate the possibility of accessing reduced phosphorus compounds in a more sustainable manner and, more importantly, a means to close the modern phosphorus cycle.

Abstract:Since the review of Yorimitsu and Oshima in 2010, the past 15 years have witnessed significant progresses in the application of 1‐alkynylphosphorus compounds in organic synthesis. Owing to the reactive carbon‐carbon triple bond in association with the electron‐withdrawing phosphoryl group, they easily undergo transition metal‐catalyzed nucleophilic addition reactions at the β‐position with carbon‐ and heteroatom‐based nucleophiles to afford structurally diverse 1‐alkenyl phosphorus compounds. Especially, when 1‐alkynylphosphonates or phosphinates are used, intramolecular substitution reactions on P‐atom might occur in some cases, which would result in the formation of P‐based heterocycles. In addition, the existing triple bond makes them prone to go through addition reaction initiated cyclization reactions and [2+2], [2+3], [2+4], [2+5] and [2+2+2] cycloaddition reactions with other unsaturated bonds, which provides an efficient access to various P‐based heterocycles and phosphorylated carbon‐ and heterocycles.

Abstract:The design and study of rich, bulky phosphorus ligands is a key area of research for homogeneous catalysis. Here, we describe an original strategy using a hydrophosphination reaction to produce phosphines of interest for coordination chemistry and homogenous catalysis. In particular, the phosphine obtained by reacting diphenylphosphine with acenaphthylene (ligand 2) gives a ligand that adopts an unusual spatial geometry. The coordination chemistry of the ligand has been investigated with Au(I), Ag(I), Cu(I), and Pd(II), for which a complete characterization could be made, particularly in X-ray diffraction studies. The reactivity of some of these complexes has been demonstrated, particularly in Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions and Au-catalyzed hydroaminations and in the hydration of alkynes.

Abstract:Organophosphorus compounds hold significant importance in the fields of materials science, medicinal chemistry, pesticides and organic synthesis. In particular, alkyl phosphate compounds can be used in sensors, antibacterial, anti-virus, herbicides and organic phosphine ligands, etc. Therefore, the construction of C(sp3)-P bonds has attracted tremendous attention from chemists. Although strategies for the photocatalysis synthesis of alkyl phosphonate esters have been reported, it was mainly limited to the radical addition reaction of a few phosphines with unsaturated bond. In recent years, with the rapid development of photocatalysis, organic chemists have made remarkable progress in the study of visible light-mediated alkyl radical phosphorylation. Abstract:A versatile and environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of various organophosphorus compounds have been developed under microware conditions. We have synthesized a series of the trifluoromethyl phosphonates via Phospha-Brook rearrangement between dialkylphosphite and 3-(trifluoroacetyl)coumarins using KF/Al2O3 as a highly efficient solid catalyst under solventless conditions. Catalyst reuse, ease of separation of the pure product, and high yields are some of the unique features of this process. In addition, the mycelial growth rate method was used to examine the in vitro antifungal activities of the phosphates 4a-o against Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum vasinfectum, Bipolaris maydis and Alternaria solani at 500 µg/mL. The results showed that compound 4n exhibited significant anti-Phytophthora capsici activity with inhibitory index of 86%.

Abstract:Useful monophosphorus products are obtained from both white and red phosphorus via a simple strategy involving initial oxidation by aryl disulfides followed by quenching with nucleophiles. Direct transformations of elemental phosphorus are usually very challenging, forcing chemists to instead rely on inefficient and hazardous multi‐step methods. However, here they are achieved using inexpensive and easy‐to‐handle reagents, providing access to diverse P–C, P–N and P–O bonded products in good yields. By isolating the thiolate byproducts of these reactions, a simple, closed loop can be achieved that produces only minimal, benign waste byproducts, in contrast to other direct methods. This closed loop can even be elaborated into a true (electro)catalytic cycle, which is extremely rare in the field of elemental phosphorus functionalization.
