Three Dimensional Topological Field Theories and Nahm Sum Formulas

Abstract:It is known that a large class of characters of 2d conformal field theories (CFTs) can be written in the form of a Nahm sum. In \cite{Zagier:2007knq}, D. Zagier identified a list of Nahm sum expressions that are modular functions under a congruence subgroup of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and can be thought of as candidates for characters of rational CFTs. Motivated by the observation that the same formulas appear as the half-indices of certain 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories, we perform a general search over low-rank 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ abelian Chern-Simons matter theories which either flow to unitary TFTs or $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-zero SCFTs in the infrared. These are exceptional classes of 3d theories, which are expected to support rational and $C_2$-cofinite chiral algebras on their boundary. We compare and contrast our results with Zagier's and comment on a possible generalization of Nahm's conjecture.

Abstract:We show that specializations of the 4d $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ superconformal index labeled by an integer N is given by Tr ℳN where ℳ is the Kontsevich-Soibelman monodromy operator for BPS states on the Coulomb branch. We provide evidence that the states enumerated by these limits of the index lead to a family of 2d chiral algebras $ {\mathcal{A}}_N $. This generalizes the recent results for the N = −1 case which corresponds to the Schur limit of the superconformal index. We show that this specialization of the index leads to the same integrand as that of the elliptic genus of compactification of the superconformal theory on S2 × T2 where we turn on $ \frac{1}{2}N $ units of U(1)r flux on S2.

Abstract:We study 3d theories containing $\mathcal{N}=3$ Chern-Simons vector multiplets coupled to the $\mathrm{SU}(N)^3$ flavour symmetry of 3d $T_N$ theories with Chern-Simons level $k_1$, $k_2$ and $k_3$. It was formerly pointed out that these theories flow to infrared SCFTs with enhanced $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry when $1/k_1+1/k_2+1/k_3=0$. We examine superconformal indices of these theories which reveal that supersymmetry of the infrared SCFTs may get enhanced to $4 \leq \mathcal{N} \leq 6$ if such a condition is satisfied. Moreover, even if the Chern-Simons levels do not obey the aforementioned condition, we find that there is still an infinite family of theories that flows to infrared SCFTs with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry. The 't Hooft anomalies of the one-form symmetries of these theories are analysed. As a by-product, we observe that there is generally a decoupled topological sector in the infrared. When the infrared SCFTs have $\mathcal{N} \geq 4$ supersymmetry, we also study the Higgs and Coulomb branch limits of the indices which provide geometric information of the moduli space of the theories in question in terms of the Hilbert series.

5d 2-Chern-Simons theory and 3d integrable field theories

Abstract:The $4$-dimensional semi-holomorphic Chern-Simons theory of Costello and Yamazaki provides a gauge-theoretic origin for the Lax connection of $2$-dimensional integrable field theories. The purpose of this paper is to extend this framework to the setting of $3$-dimensional integrable field theories by considering a $5$-dimensional semi-holomorphic higher Chern-Simons theory for a higher connection $(A,B)$ on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times \mathbb{C}P^1$. The input data for this theory are the choice of a meromorphic $1$-form $\omega$ on $\mathbb{C}P^1$ and a strict Lie $2$-group with cyclic structure on its underlying Lie $2$-algebra. Integrable field theories on $\mathbb{R}^3$ are constructed by imposing suitable boundary conditions on the connection $(A,B)$ at the $3$-dimensional defects located at the poles of $\omega$ and choosing certain admissible meromorphic solutions of the bulk equations of motion. The latter provides a natural notion of higher Lax connection for $3$-dimensional integrable field theories, including a $2$-form component $B$ which can be integrated over Cauchy surfaces to produce conserved charges. As a first application of this approach, we show how to construct a generalization of Ward's $(2+1)$-dimensional integrable chiral model from a suitable choice of data in the $5$-dimensional theory.

Abstract:The Coulomb branch indices of Argyres-Douglas theories on $L(k,1)times S^{1}$ are recently identified with matrix elements of modular transforms of certain $2d$ vertex operator algebras in a particular limit. A one parameter generalization of the modular transformation matrices of $(2N+3,2)$ minimal models are proposed to compute the full Coulomb branch index of $(A_{1},A_{2N})$ Argyres-Douglas theories on the same space. Morever, M-theory construction of these theories suggests direct connection to the refined Chern-Simons theory. The connection is made precise by showing how the modular transformation matrices of refined Chern-Simons theory are related to the proposed generalized ones for minimal models and the identification of Coulomb branch indices with the partition function of the refined Chern-Simons theory.

Abstract:A generalization of the 4d Chern-Simons theory action introduced by Costello and Yamazaki is presented. We apply general arguments from symplectic geometry concerning the Hamiltonian action of a symmetry group on the space of gauge connections defined on a 4d manifold and construct an action functional that is quadratic in the moment map associated to the group action. The generalization relies on the use of contact 1-forms defined on non-trivial circle bundles over Riemann surfaces and mimics closely the approach used by Beasley and Witten to reformulate conventional 3d Chern-Simons theories on Seifert manifolds. We also show that the path integral of the generalized theory associated to integrable field theories of the PCM type, takes the canonical form of a symplectic integral over a subspace of the space of gauge connections, turning it a potential candidate for using the method of non-Abelian localization. Alternatively, this new quadratic completion of the 4d Chern-Simons theory can also be deduced in an intuitive way from manipulations similar to those used in T-duality. Further details on how to recover the original 4d Chern-Simons theory data, from the point of view of the Hamiltonian formalism applied to the generalized theory, are included as well.

Noncommutative Chern-Simons Theory and Exotic Geometry Emerging from the Lowest Landau Level

Abstract:We relate the collective dynamic internal geometric degrees of freedom to the gauge fluctuations in nu = 1/m (m odd) fractional quantum Hall effects. In this way, in the lowest Landau level, a highly nontrivial quantum geometry in two-dimensional guiding center space emerges from these internal geometric modes. Using the Dirac bracket method, we find that this quantum geometric field theory is a topological noncommutative Chern-Simons theory. Topological indices, such as the guiding center angular momentum (also called the shift) and the guiding center spin, which characterize the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states besides the filling factor, are naturally defined. A noncommutative K-matrix Chern-Simons theory is proposed as a generalization to a large class of Abelian FQH topological orders.

Abstract:We study generalized global symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies in 3d N=4 superconformal field theories (SCFTs). Following some general considerations, we focus on good quiver gauge theories, comprised of balanced unitary nodes and unbalanced unitary and special unitary nodes. While the global form of the Higgs branch symmetry group may be determined from the UV Lagrangian, the global form of Coulomb branch symmetry groups and associated mixed 't Hooft anomalies are more subtle due to potential symmetry enhancement in the IR. We describe how Coulomb branch symmetry groups and their mixed 't Hooft anomalies can be deduced from the UV Lagrangian by studying center charges of various types of monopole operators, providing a concrete and unambiguous way to implement 't Hooft anomaly matching. The final expression for the symmetry group and 't Hooft anomalies has a concise form that can be easily read off from the quiver data, specifically from the positions of the unbalanced and flavor nodes with respect to the positions of the balanced nodes. We provide consistency checks by applying our method to compute symmetry groups of 3d N=4 theories corresponding to magnetic quivers of 4d Class S theories and 5d SCFTs. We are able to match these results against the flavor symmetry groups of the 4d and 5d theories computed using independent methods. Another strong consistency check is provided by comparing symmetry groups and anomalies of two theories related by 3d mirror symmetry.

Abstract:We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study flows of N=4 SYM to non-conformal theories. The dual geometries can be seen as sourced by a Wigner's semicircle distribution of D3 branes. We consider two cases, the first case corresponds to a point in the Coulomb branch and the theory flows to a six dimensional conformal field theory. In the second case a mass is introduced for a hypermultiplet and the theory flows to a five dimensional conformal field theory. We argue from the gravity and the field theory side that the low energy theories correspond to the (2,0) theory in six dimensions and to a theory with exceptional global symmetry $E_1$ in five dimensions.

Abstract:For a class of two-dimensional Euclidean lattice field theories admitting topological lines encoded into a spherical fusion category, we explore aspects of their realisations as boundary theories of a three-dimensional topological quantum field theory. After providing a general framework for explicitly constructing such realisations, we specialise to non-abelian generalisations of the Ising model and consider two operations: gauging an arbitrary subsymmetry and performing Fourier transforms of the local weights encoding the dynamics of the theory. These are carried out both in a traditional way and in terms of the three-dimensional topological quantum field theory. Whenever the whole symmetry is gauged, combining both operations recovers the non-abelian Kramers-Wannier duals à la Freed and Teleman of the generalised Ising models. Moreover, we discuss the interplay between renormalisation group fixed points of gapped symmetric phases and these generalised Kramers-Wannier dualities.

Abstract:In the free □k scalar conformal field theory, there exist conserved and partially conserved higher-spin currents. We study their anomalous dimensions associated with φ2n interaction in the ε expansion. We derive general formulas for the leading corrections from the conformal multiplet recombination, and verify their consistency with crossing symmetry using the Lorentzian inversion formula. Abstract:This article reviews some recent progress in our understanding of the structure of rational conformal field theories, based on ideas that originate for a large part in the work of A. Ocneanu. The consistency conditions that generalize modular invariance for a given RCFT in the presence of various types of boundary conditions—open, twisted—are encoded in a system of integer multiplicities that form matrix representations of fusion-like algebras. These multiplicities are also the combinatorial data that enable one to construct an abstract “quantum” algebra, whose 6j-and 3j-symbols contain essential information on the operator product algebra of the RCFT and are part of a cell system, subject to pentagonal identities. It looks quite plausible that the classification of a wide class of RCFT amounts to a classification of “Weak C*- Hopf algebras”.

Abstract:Totally symmetric arbitrary spin conformal fields propagating in the flat space of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. For such fields, we develop a general ordinary-derivative light-cone gauge formalism and obtain restrictions imposed by the conformal algebra symmetries on interaction vertices. We apply our formalism for the detailed study of conformal scalar and vector fields. For such fields, all parity-even cubic interaction vertices are obtained. The cubic vertices obtained are presented in terms of dressing operators and undressed vertices. We show that the undressed vertices of the conformal scalar and vector fields are equal, up to overall factor, to the cubic vertices of massless scalar and vector fields. Various conjectures about interrelations between the cubic vertices for conformal fields in conformal invariant theories and the cubic vertices for massless fields in Poincaré invariant theories are proposed.

Abstract:We revisit the 3d ${\cal N}=5$ Chern-Simons-Matter theory with orthosymplectic gauge group and its gravity dual from the perspective of generalized symmetries. We derive the corresponding 4d symmetry topological field theory from the gravity dual and relate the allowed boundary conditions to the different variants of the 3d theory. Concentrating on a specific variant that has a discrete non-abelian global symmetry, we explain how the structure of this symmetry arises from brane dynamics.

Monopoles, Dirac Strings and Generalised Symmetries

Abstract:Dirac's formulation of magnetic monopoles is shown to be equivalent to Maxwell theory coupled to 2-form gauge fields so that it has a local 1-form symmetry, with the 2-form gauge fields given in terms of the 2-form current densities associated with the Dirac strings. The field equations of Dirac's theory do not depend on the positions of the Dirac strings provided that they do not intersect the worldlines of any electrically charged particles; this constraint is called the Dirac veto. It is shown that Dirac's action is independent of the positions of the Dirac strings and that this corresponds a local 1-form symmetry. The electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries have a mixed anomaly, and the Dirac veto is shown to correspond to a restriction to gauge transformations for which the anomaly vanishes. The extension to $p$-form gauge fields in d-dimensions coupled to charged branes is discussed, together with the possibility of cancelling the anomaly by embedding in a higher-dimensional theory and so avoiding the veto.

A chiral limit for Chern-Simons-matter theories

Abstract:Large N quasi-fermionic Chern-Simons-matter theories have an approximate higher-spin symmetry that strongly constrains their correlation functions. In particular, the 3-point functions for generic spins are combinations of 3 structures (with specific dependence on the positions and helicities), and the coupling-dependence of the coefficient of each structure is uniquely determined. In the past few years, several relations between different structures were found. In this paper we show that all the relations between the structures follow from (or, conversely, they imply) a specific form written by Skvortsov for the vertices of the dual higher-spin gravity theory on four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space, when written in spinor-helicity variables. The dual bulk theory has a specific limit where it simplifies and becomes a "chiral higher-spin gravity theory", and we discuss what can be said about this limit in the dual Chern-Simons-matter theories, where it involves an analytic continuation to complex couplings.
