Abstract:Altermagnetism is a newly discovered magnetic class named after the alternating spin polarizations in both real and reciprocal spaces. Like the spin-splitting of electronic bands, the magnon bands in altermagnets are predicted to exhibit alternating chiral splitting. In this work, by performing inelastic neutron scattering on $\alpha$-MnTe, we directly verified the chiral splitting in altermagnetic magnon dispersions. The lifted degeneracy of chirality is further explained by a symmetric-exchange origin. In addition, the $g$-wave magnetism was identified in MnTe.

Abstract:Altermagnets are collinear compensated magnets in which the magnetic sublattices are related by rotation rather than translation or inversion. One of the quintessential properties of altermagnets is the presence of split chiral magnon modes. Recently, such modes have been predicted in MnF$_2$. Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering results on an MnF$_2$ single-crystal along high-symmetry Brillouin zone paths for which the magnon splitting is expected. Within the resolution of our measurement, we do not observe the predicted splitting. The inelastic spectrum is well-modeled using $J_1, ~J_2, ~J_3$ nearest-neighbor exchange interactions with weak uniaxial anisotropy. These interactions have higher symmetry than the crystal lattice, while the interactions predicted to produce the altermagnetic splitting are negligibly small. Therefore, the two magnon modes appear to be degenerate over the entire Brillouin zone and the spin dynamics of MnF$_2$ is indistinguishable from a classical Néel antiferromagnet. Application of magnetic field causes a Zeeman splitting of the magnon modes close to the $\mathrm{\Gamma}$ point. Even if chiral magnon modes are allowed by altermagnetic symmetry, the splitting in real materials such as MnF$_2$ can be negligibly small.

Observation of Giant Band Splitting in Altermagnetic MnTe

Abstract:We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on hexagonal MnTe, a candidate for an altermagnet with a high critical temperature (TN=307 K). By utilizing photon-energy-tunable ARPES in combination with first-principles calculations, we found that the band structure in the antiferromagnetic phase exhibits a strongly anisotropic band-splitting associated with the time-reversal-symmetry breaking, providing the first direct experimental evidence for the altermagnetic band-splitting. The magnitude of the splitting reaches 0.8 eV at non-high-symmetry momentum points, which is much larger than the spin-orbit gap of ~0.3 eV along the GK high-symmetry cut. The present result paves the pathway toward realizing exotic physical properties associated with the altermagnetic spin-splitting.

On the Origin of $A$-type Antiferromagnetism and Chiral Split Magnons in Altermagnetic $α$-MnTe

Abstract:The origin of the $A$-type antiferromagnetic ordering, where ferromagnetic layers couple antiferromagnetically, in the semiconductor altermagnet $\alpha$-MnTe has been a subject of ongoing debate. Experimentally, $\alpha$-MnTe exhibits a nearest-neighbor in-plane ferromagnetic exchange interaction, whereas previous ab initio calculations predicted an antiferromagnetic interaction. In this Letter, we resolve this discrepancy by considering an expanded set of magnetic configurations, which reveals an FM in-plane exchange interaction in agreement with experimental findings. Additionally, we demonstrate that the 10th nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is directionally dependent, inducing a chiral splitting in the magnon bands, as recently observed experimentally. We further show that applying a compressive strain reverses the sign of the in-plane exchange interaction and significantly enhances the spin and chiral splittings of the electronic and magnonic bands, respectively. Our results highlight the critical importance of convergence in the number of magnetic configurations for complex spin interactions in antiferromagnetic materials.

Time-resolved magneto-optical effects in the altermagnet candidate MnTe

Abstract:$\alpha$-MnTe is an antiferromagnetic semiconductor with above room temperature $T_N$ = 310 K, which is promising for spintronic applications. Recently, it was reported to be an altermagnet, containing bands with momentum-dependent spin splitting; time-resolved experimental probes of MnTe are therefore important both for understanding novel magnetic properties and potential device applications. We investigate ultrafast spin dynamics in epitaxial MnTe(001)/InP(111) thin films using pump-probe magneto-optical measurements in the Kerr configuration. At room temperature, we observe an oscillation mode at 55 GHz that does not appear at zero magnetic field. Combining field and polarization dependence, we identify this mode as a magnon, likely originating from inverse stimulated Raman scattering. Magnetic field-dependent oscillations persist up to at least 335 K, which could reflect coupling to known short-range magnetic order in MnTe above $T_N$. Additionally, we observe two optical phonons at 3.6 THz and 4.2 THz, which broaden and redshift with increasing temperature.

Observing Altermagnetism using Polarized Neutrons

Abstract:Altermagnets are colinear compensated magnets whose magnetic symmetries at zero spin-orbit coupling break spin degeneracy leading to spin-split electronic and magnonic bands that reflect an underlying multipolar order. When there is an approximate $U(1)$ symmetry the magnons in altermagnets are split into equal and opposite chiral pairs. We show that in altermagnets polarized neutrons provide a means to detect the population of time-reversed domains and allow direct measurement of the magnon chirality anisotropy in momentum space -- the central signature of the altermagnetic phase. We demonstrate this response to polarized neutrons in two candidate materials MnF$_2$ and MnTe and show that the presence of these chiralities is stable to small perturbations that break spin-rotation symmetry. This provides a magnonic analogue of spin polarized ARPES that has been used to discern altermagnetism in the electronic band structures of various candidate materials.

Abstract:The field of spintronics has seen a surge of interest in altermagnetism due to novel predictions and many possible applications. MnTe is a leading altermagnetic candidate that is of significant interest across spintronics due to its layered antiferromagnetic structure, high Neel temperature (TN ~ 310 K) and semiconducting properties. We present results on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown MnTe/InP(111) films. Here, it is found that the electronic and magnetic properties are driven by the natural stoichiometry of MnTe. Electronic transport and in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy show the films are natively metallic with the Fermi level in the valence band and the band structure is in good agreement with first principles calculations for altermagnetic spin-splitting. Neutron diffraction confirms that the film is antiferromagnetic with planar anisotropy and polarized neutron reflectometry indicates weak ferromagnetism, which is linked to a slight Mn-richness that is intrinsic to the MBE grown samples. When combined with the anomalous Hall effect, this work shows that the electronic response is strongly affected by the ferromagnetic moment. Altogether, this highlights potential mechanisms for controlling altermagnetic ordering for diverse spintronic applications.

Abstract:MnTe has recently attracted attention as an altermagnetic candidate. Experimentally it has an altermagnetic order of ferromagnetic $ab$ planes, stacked antiferromagnetically along $c$. We show that this magnetic order (by itself non-trivial, since the in-plane exchange in antiferromagnetic) opens intriguing possibility of manufacturing altermagnetically-detwinned samples and generate observable magnetooptical response (which we calculate from first principles) as a signature of altermagnetism.

Abstract:Altermagnetism is a recently identified magnetic symmetry class combining characteristics of conventional collinear ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, that were regarded as mutually exclusive, and enabling phenomena and functionalities unparalleled in either of the two traditional elementary magnetic classes. In this work we use symmetry, ab initio theory, and experiments to explore x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in the altermagnetic class. As a representative material for our XMCD study we choose α -MnTe with compensated antiparallel magnetic order in which an anomalous Hall effect has been already demonstrated. We predict and experimentally confirm a characteristic XMCD line shape for compensated moments lying in a plane perpendicular to the light propagation vector. Abstract:Recently, MnTe was established as an altermagnetic material that hosts spin-polarized electronic bands as well as anomalous transport effects like the anomalous Hall effect. In addition to these effects arising from altermagnetism, MnTe also hosts other magnetoresistance effects. Here, we study the manipulation of the magnetic order by an applied magnetic field and its impact on the electrical resistivity. In particular, we establish which components of anisotropic magnetoresistance are present when the magnetic order is rotated within the hexagonal basal plane. Our experimental results, which are in agreement with our symmetry analysis of the magnetotransport components, showcase the existence of an anisotropic magnetoresistance linked to both the relative orientation of current and magnetic order, as well as crystal and magnetic order.

Abstract:Seeking to understand recent predictions of the exotic state known as "altermagnetism". The study reports that even when high‐quality samples are grown by molecular beam epitaxy, altermagnetic candidates may exhibit richer phenomena than anticipated, which highlights new routes to take advantage of these novel magnetic materials for new applications. The field of spintronics has seen a surge of interest in altermagnetism due to novel predictions and many possible applications. MnTe is a leading altermagnetic candidate that is of significant interest across spintronics due to its layered antiferromagnetic structure, high Neel temperature (TN ≈ 310 K) and semiconducting properties. The results on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown MnTe/InP(111) films are presented. Here, it is found that the electronic and magnetic properties are driven by the natural stoichiometry of MnTe. Electronic transport and in situ angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy show the films are natively metallic with the Fermi level in the valence band and the band structure is in good agreement with first‐principles calculations for altermagnetic spin‐splitting. Neutron diffraction confirms that the film is antiferromagnetic with planar anisotropy and polarized neutron reflectometry indicates weak ferromagnetism, which is linked to a slight Mn‐richness that is intrinsic to the MBE‐grown samples. When combined with the anomalous Hall effect, this work shows that the electronic response is strongly affected by the ferromagnetic moment. Altogether, this highlights potential mechanisms for controlling altermagnetic ordering for diverse spintronic applications.

Abstract:We examined the piezomagnetic effect in an antiferromagnet MnTe, which is a candidate material for altermagnetism with a high critical temperature. We observed that the magnetization develops with the application of stress and revealed that the piezomagnetic coefficient Q is 1.38×10−8 μB /Mn/MPa at 300 K. The poling-field dependence of magnetization indicates that the antiferromagnetic domain can be controlled using the piezomagnetic effect. We demonstrate that piezomagnetic effect is one of the suitable methods for the detection of broken time-reversal symmetry and the domain control in antiferromagnets with broken time-reversal symmetry, including altermagnets. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.8.L041402 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The ferrimagnet Mn3Si2Te6 attracts attention because of a recently discovered colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) with unique magnetic field properties. An improved magnetic structure for the material has emerged from a neutron diffraction study linked to understanding the CMR. A deeper theoretical investigation of the magnetic structure has now revealed anapole, chiral and orbital states of manganese ions not previously mentioned. Moreover, it is shown that existence of these states in the low temperature form of Mn3Si2Te6, with a magnetic field applied, can be tested by neutron and resonant x-ray diffraction.

Crossover from relativistic to non-relativistic net magnetization for MnTe altermagnet candidate

Abstract:We experimentally study magnetization reversal curves for MnTe single crystals, which is the altermagnetic candidate. Above 85~K temperature, we confirm the antiferromagnetic behavior of magnetization $M$, which is known for $\alpha$--MnTe. Below 85~K, we observe anomalous low-field magnetization behavior, which is accompanied by the sophisticated $M(\alpha)$ angle dependence with beating pattern as the interplay between $M(\alpha)$ maxima and minima: in low fields, $M(\alpha)$ shows ferromagnetic-like 180$^\circ$ periodicity, while at high magnetic fields, the periodicity is changed to the 90$^\circ$ one. This angle dependence is the most striking result of our experiment, while it can not be expected for standard magnetic systems. In contrast, in altermagnets, symmetry allows ferromagnetic behavior only due to the spin-orbit coupling. Thus, we claim that our experiment shows the effect of weak spin-orbit coupling in MnTe, with crossover from relativistic to non-relativistic net magnetization, and, therefore, we experimentally confirm altermagnetism in MnTe.

Giant spontaneous magnetostriction in MnTe driven by a novel magnetostructural coupling mechanism

Abstract:We present a comprehensive x-ray scattering study of spontaneous magnetostriction in hexagonal MnTe, an antiferromagnetic semiconductor with a Neel temperature of $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 307$ K. We observe the largest spontaneous magnetovolume effect known for an antiferromagnet, reaching a volume contraction of $|\Delta V/V| > 7 \times 10^{-3}$. This can be justified semiquantitatively by considering bulk material properties, the spatial dependence of the superexchange interaction, and the geometrical arrangement of magnetic moments in MnTe. The highly unusual linear scaling of the magnetovolume effect with the short-range magnetic correlations, beginning in the paramagnetic state well above $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, points to a novel physical mechanism, which we explain in terms of a trilinear coupling of the elastic strain with superposed distinct domains of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. This novel mechanism for coupling lattice strain to robust short-range magnetic order casts new light on magnetostrictive phenomena and also provides a template by which the exceptional magnetostrictive properties of MnTe might be realized in a wide range of other functional materials.

Abstract:Altermagnetic (AM) materials exhibit non-relativistic, momentum-dependent spin-split states, ushering in new opportunities for spin electronic devices. While the characteristics of spin-splitting have been documented within the framework of the non-relativistic spin group symmetry, there has been limited exploration of the inclusion of relativistic symmetry and its impact on the emergence of a novel spin-splitting in the band structure. This study delves into the intricate relativistic electronic structure of an AM material, alpha-MnTe. Employing temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy across the AM phase transition, we elucidate the emergence of a relativistic valence band splitting concurrent with the establishment of magnetic order. This discovery is validated through disordered local moment calculations, modeling the influence of magnetic order on the electronic structure and confirming the magnetic origin of the observed splitting. The temperature-dependent splitting is ascribed to the advent of relativistic spin-splitting resulting from the strengthening of AM order in alpha-MnTe as the temperature decreases. This sheds light on a previously unexplored facet of this intriguing material.
