Electro-acupuncture therapy for lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion: A randomized controlled study

Abstract:AIM:This study was intended to verify the advantages of electro-acupuncture therapy on improving the symptoms and side effects of lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion and to validate the clinical effect of electro-acupuncture in treating lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. METHODS:①Totally 200 patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion,who were treated at Sixth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2005 to January 2006,were enrolled. They all singed the informed consent. G6805-Ⅱ electro-acupuncture apparatus was provided by Shanghai Gaoxin Medical Instrument Company. 30# 1.5 cun and 3 cun stainless steel acupuncture needle was Brand Huatuo and offered by Suzhou Medical Article Factory. Mobic tablets were provided by Germany Bolingeyingehan International Company. ②The patients were randomly divided into observational group(n =100) and control group(n =100). ③The Jiaji(EX B 2),Yaoyangguan(Du 3),Huantiao(GB 30) and Yanglingquan(G 34) were applied in observational group with 30# 1.5 cun and 3 cun stainless steel acupuncture needle and then frequency of 4 Hz and current intensity of 2 mA G6805-Ⅱ electro-acupuncture apparatus,continuous wave for 20 minutes. Mobic was taken in the observational group,7.5 mg per day. The treatment in both the groups were given once a day for 10 days,with an interval of 5 days,then given for another 10 days. ④The improvement of lumbago,pain or numbness of lower limb,walking ability,sensory disability,raising straight leg and muscle strength was observed. RESULTS:①The total efficacy percent of observational group was higher than that of the control group(86.53%,75.00%,P < 0.01). The improvement of lumbago,pain or numbness of lower limb,walking ability,raising straight leg and muscle strength was better in the observational group than the control group(P < 0.01). ②There were poor appetite,nausea,abdomen pain,swollen,headache and dizziness in control group. But there had been no side effect in observational group besides bleeding. CONCLUSION:Electro-acupuncture therapy has good therapeutic effect on the symptoms and side effects of lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion.
