Abstract:Crude oil is a nonrenewable liquid petroleum resource existing by nature that is extracted from the earth and refined into a variety of products. Two steps are used to forecast crude oil prices more accurately. Firstly, two commonly used prediction models for crude oil prices are introduced, such as the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. Secondly, the original data are divided into high-frequency terms and low-frequency terms, and 9 intrinsic mode functions and a residual term based on the zero-mean hypothesis test. It is used as a new model training and forecasting dataset, and it is used to implement an EEMD–ARIMA–LSTM composite model for crude oil price forecasting. Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is a noise-assisted data analysis method. Finally, the closing price of West Texas Intermediate is used as a data set to predict crude oil prices using the composite model. The detailed experimental results reveal that the composite model's Root Mean Square Error, Mean Absolute Error, and Mean Absolute Percentage Error are 1.3786, 1.1612, and 1.8603, respectively. The proposed composite model has the minimal prediction error and the best prediction effect on crude oil prices, which has strong advantages compared to the single model. The constructed composite model has certain practicability and scientificity in forecasting international crude oil futures prices.
