Abstract:Today, rapid urbanization and increasing human activities have affected the climate at macro and micro scales in cities and caused unfavorable conditions in terms of human thermal comfort, especially in outdoor spaces. In this context, new solutions need to be researched, developed, tested, and updated to improve thermal comfort in cities. Using ENVI-met 5.1 software, this study investigated the effects of different NBS combinations on the urban microclimate and human bioclimatic comfort in Izmir (Turkey). The current situation, the scenarios where some nature-based solutions (NBS) are applied within the scope of the European Union's HORIZON 2020 "URBAN GreenUP" project, and two other scenarios planned within the scope of the study were evaluated. The findings of the study showed that both the NBS scenarios created within the scope of the EU project and the NBS scenarios with large deciduous trees had the most positive impacts on improving thermal comfort conditions in all three study zones and achieved temperature reductions of up to 2.5 °C in urban temperatures. In terms of thermal comfort, the most significant differences were calculated between the minimum PMV values and were close to 1 °C. In addition, the simulation results showed positive changes in psychological stress levels.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses how to use nature-based solutions (NBS) to improve urban microclimate and enhance thermal comfort in Izmir, Turkey, under Mediterranean climate conditions. The study uses ENVI-met 5.1 software to simulate the effects of different NBS combinations on urban microclimate and human bioclimatic comfort. Three research areas are mentioned in the paper: Gırne Street, Kocaeli Province parking lot, and Sasali Wildlife Park parking lot. The NBS scenarios in the EU "URBAN GreenUP" project and two additional NBS scenarios are analyzed. The study shows that both the NBS scenarios in the EU project and the NBS scenarios with large deciduous trees can significantly improve thermal comfort conditions, reduce urban temperatures by up to 2.5°C, and lower stress levels. The paper also points out that the high temperatures and uncomfortable outdoor environment caused by the urban heat island phenomenon not only affect residents' comfort but also exacerbate air pollution and building cooling loads. Therefore, finding and implementing NBS is crucial for climate change adaptation and improving urban thermal comfort. Izmir is chosen as the research subject because it has a typical Mediterranean climate and has experienced rapid urbanization, facing severe heat island effects. By simulating and analyzing with ENVI-met software, the authors evaluate the effects of different NBS on air temperature, wind speed, and Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) index. In addition, the paper validates the simulation accuracy of ENVI-met software to ensure the reliability of the results. In conclusion, this paper aims to identify the most effective combinations of NBS to mitigate the heat island effect in cities like Izmir, enhance residents' thermal comfort, and provide references for urban planning in similar regions.
