Abstract:On the basis of cytochemical and morphologic differences, two classes of γ‐aminobutyric acidergic (GABAergic) interneurons expressing calcium‐binding proteins have been identified in the striatum of adult animals: neurons expressing either parvalbumin (PV) or calretinin (CR). The function of these calcium‐binding proteins is not clear, however, they are associated with distinct classes of inhibitory interneurons within the adult neostriatum. By using immunocytochemical techniques, we analyzed the postnatal maturation and the spatiotemporal distribution of PV‐ and CR‐positive neurons in the rat neostriatum compared with a third class of interneurons characterized by the expression of the acetylcholine‐synthesizing enzyme, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). PV‐positive cells appeared initially on postnatal day 9 in the lateral region of the striatum. During postnatal weeks 2 and 3, the numbers of PV‐positive neurons increased, and this cell population spread progressively in a lateromedial direction. In contrast, CR‐expressing neurons were present at birth. During the first few days after birth, the number of CR‐immunoreactive cells increased, reaching a peak on postnatal day 5 before declining during the following 2 weeks. A mediolateral gradient was evident temporarily. ChAT‐containing neurons were detectable at birth in the lateral striatum. During postnatal weeks 1 and 2, the neurons matured along a lateral‐to‐medial gradient. The results indicate that the maturation of striatal interneurons is regulated differentially during postnatal development, resulting in a distinct spatiotemporal genesis of phenotypes. The sequential expression of CR and PV suggests a stage‐dependent development of subsets of inhibitory interneurons and, hence, the stage‐dependent maturation of functionally distinct inhibitory circuits within the neostriatum. Doublecortin expression in adult rats after intracerebral hemarrhage

Abstract:Objective To investigate neurogenesis in adult rat after intracerebral hemorrhage.Method Male Sprague-Dawley rats received an intracerebral infusion of 100μl autologous blood.Western blot analysis and histological examination were performed to check doublecortin(DCX)and Bromodeoxyuridine(Brdu).Results DCX levels in the ipsilateral basal ganglia started to increase as early as seven days after intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH),peaked at 14 days(793±192% of sham,P＜0.01).We found that most DCX positive ceHs were Brdu positive.Conclusion The results demonstrated that neurogenesis occurs from subventricular gone(SVZ)in the brain following ICH.
Neuron Regeneration in Aged Rats after Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate neuron regeneration of aged rats after intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH).METHODS:ICH model was induced by intracerebral infusion of 100microL autologous blood in adult and aged (3 and 18 m of age, respectively) male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Doublecortin(DCX), polysialylated neural cell adhesion protein(PSA-NCAM) and Bromodeoxyuridine (Brdu) in brain tissue were detected by Western blot analysis and immunohistochemical examination.RESULT:In aged rats, DCX levels in the ipsilateral basal ganglia and subventricular zone started to increase at 7d after ICH, peaked at 14 d [(670+/-145)% of controls, P<0.01]. Most DCX positive cells in ipsilateral striatum were BrdU positive. Though DCX content in ipsilateral basal ganglia [(2560+/-758) pixels]of ICH aged rats was much higher than that of aged rat controls [(450+/-97)pixels, P<0.01], it was still lower than that in adult rats.CONCLUSION:The results demonstrate that neuron regeneration occurs in subventricular zone in the aged rats following intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the expression of neural salient serine/arginine-rich protein 1 (NSSR1) in the development of mouse brain.METHODS:Brain samples were collected from mice with different developmental stages: 9, 12, 14 d before birth (E9, E12, E14) and 1 d, 3 weeks and 3 months after birth. The expression of NSSR1 in mouse brain at different developmental stages was detected by Western blot and the distribution of NSSR1 was analyzed by immunohistochemical staining. The expression and distribution of NSSR1 in mouse brain were compared among embryos, neonatal and adult animals.RESULTS:During embryogenesis, the expression of NSSR1 proteins increases significantly from 0.186(E9) to 0.445(E14) and reached a high level after birth. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that in E12 embryos, NSSR1 was specifically distributed in the marginal and mantle layers. The expression of NSSR1 in hippocampus was very low in neonatal animals but stronger in adults. In cerebellar cortex, NSSR1 was widely expressed in purkinje and granule cells of adult animals, but mainly expressed in Purkinje cells in neonates.CONCLUSION:The expression of NSSR1 is regulated by the development of mouse brain and presents dynamic changes.
Neonatal Hypoxic/ischemic Brain Injury Induces Production of Calretinin‐expressing Interneurons in the Striatum

Abstract:Ischemia-induced striatal neurogenesis from progenitors in the adjacent subventricular zone (SVZ) in young and adult rodents has been reported. However, it has not been established whether the precursors that reside in the SVZ retain the capacity to produce the full range of striatal neurons that has been destroyed. By using a neonatal rat model of hypoxic/ischemic brain damage, we show here that virtually all of the newly produced striatal neurons are calretinin (CR)-immunoreactive (+), but not DARPP-32(+), calbindin-D-28K(+), parvalbumin(+), somatostatin(+), or choline acetyltransferase(+). Retroviral fate-mapping studies confirm that these newly born CR(+) neurons are indeed descendants of the SVZ. Our studies indicate that, although the postnatal SVZ has the capacity to produce a range of neurons, only a subset of this repertoire is manifested in the brain after injury.
Effect of Deafferentation on Calretinin of Adult Rat Olfactory Bulb

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the effect of deafferentation on the expression level of calretinin (CR) in adult Sprague Dawley rat olfactory bulb (OB). METHODS: Adult Sprague Dawley rats were given a single intranasal irrigation with ZnSO_4. A specific period (10, 20, 30 and 60 days, respectively) after the treatment, immunoreactivities of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and calretinin of OB were examined by using immunohistochemistry. Down-regulation of TH expression level was regarded as a mark of deafferentation. RESULTS: 10, 20, 30 and 60 days after ZnSO_4 treatment, staining intensity and density of TH-immunoreactive cells of OB significantly reduced and the degree of reduction was correlated with the time of treatment before 30 days, but the result of 60 d was similar to that of 30 d. There was no obvious change in the density of CR-immunopositive cells after the same treatment. CONCLUSION: Expression of CR in adult rat OB was not affected by deafferentation.
Different Expression of Caspase‐3 in Rat Hippocampal Subregions During Postnatal Development

Abstract:Recent studies indicate that caspase-3 has distinct characteristics in postmitotic and neuronal progenitor apoptosis. Pyramidal neurons in CA1 and CA3 of the hippocampus become postmitotic during early postnatal development, whereas granule cells in the dentate gyrus (DG) undergo self-renewal throughout life. The distribution of caspase-3 in the hippocampal subfields during postnatal development is largely unknown. We used immunofluorescent staining for two isoforms of caspase-3 (an active 17 kDa isoform and an inactive 35 kDa precursor) and the Hoechst 33342 staining for nuclear chromatin to assess caspase-3 expression in the CA1, CA3, and DG of rat hippocampus during postnatal development. The expression of active caspase-3 reached a peak at P7 in CA1, at P2 in CA3, and then decreased with age. Whereas in DG, active caspase-3 expression increased slightly after P7, and remained at high levels for the rest of the investigated period. Procaspase-3 immunoreactivity was strong at P2 and decreased gradually to a basal plateau by P21 in the three regions examined. In addition, the number of apoptotic cells in the three regions all reached maximum levels at P7, and then decreased with age. These data indicate that there were specific spatio-temporal patterns of expression of active and precursor caspase-3 in the postnatally developing rat hippocampal subregions, and that the activation of caspase-3 in neuronal progenitor cells of DG and that in the postmitotic neurons of CA1 and CA3 may have distinct roles and mechanisms during postnatal development.
Different Expression of NR2B and PSD‐95 in Rat Hippocampal Subregions During Postnatal Development

Abstract:The different expressions of NR2 and synaptic‐associated proteins have been studied by protein and mRNA level with immunoblotting, in situ hybridization, or immunogold analysis. But the relationship between NR2 subunits and PSD‐95 family proteins is still controversial. In this study, we used immunofluorescent staining to assess NR2B and PSD‐95 expressions and the relationship between them in CA1, CA3, and DG of rat hippocampus on different postnatal day. In CA1, NR2B expression decreased with age. It was high at birth, reached a plateau at P4, and declined gradually after P7. In CA3, NR2B expression was similar to that in CA1. But the stratum lucidum was devoid of staining. In DG, the NR2B expression retained a higher level. From P0 to P2, the PSD‐95 expression in CA1 increased gently, and then declined slightly. After P7, the PSD‐95 expression increased sharply till P28, and decreased again. In CA3 and DG, the PSD‐95 expression is very similar except that low‐level of PSD‐95 was found in the CA3 stratum lucidum. The expression of NR2B did not correlate with that of PSD‐95 in CA1 and the DG granular and molecular layer. Only in CA3 and DG polymorphic layer, there was a negative correlation. The results suggested in hippocampal subregions, CA3 and DG may be more plastic than CA1.The NR2B and PSD‐95 expression have distinct regional and cell specific distribution. The fine tuning of retinocollicular topography depends on reelin signaling during early postnatal development of the rat visual system

Abstract:During postnatal development, neural circuits are extremely dynamic and develop precise connection patterns that emerge as a result of the elimination of synaptic terminals, a process instructed by molecular cues and patterns of electrical activity. In the rodent visual system, this process begins during the first postnatal week and proceeds during the second and third postnatal weeks as spontaneous retinal activity and finally use-dependent fine tuning takes place. Reelin is a large extracellular matrix glycoprotein able to affect several steps of brain development, from neuronal migration to the maturation of dendritic spines and use-dependent synaptic development. In the present study, we investigated the role of reelin on the topographical refinement of primary sensory connections studying the development of retinal ganglion cell axon terminals in the rat superior colliculus. We found that reelin levels in the visual layers of the superior colliculus are the highest between the second and third postnatal weeks. Blocking reelin signaling with a neutralizing antibody (CR-50) from PND 7 to PND 14 induced a non-specific sprouting of ipsilateral retinocollicular axons outside their typical distribution of discrete patches of axon terminals. Also we found that reelin blockade resulted in reduced levels of phospho-GAP43, increased GluN1 and GluN2B-NMDA subunits and decreased levels of GAD65 content in the visual layers of the superior colliculus. The results suggest that reelin signaling is associated with the maturation of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic machinery influencing the development and fine tuning of topographically organized neural circuits during postnatal development.
Development of GABA-immunoreactivity in the neocortex of the mouse

Abstract:The prenatal and postnatal development of GABAergic elements in the neocortex of the mouse was analyzed by GABA-immunocytochemistry. Radial distribution of cells and laminar numerical densities were calculated at each developmental stage to substantiate qualitative observations. The first immunoreactive neurons were observed in the cortical anlage at embryonic day 12-embryonic day 13 (E12-E13) in the primitive plexiform layer. At following prenatal stages (E14-E19), most GABA-positive neurons were present in the marginal zone, subplate, and subventricular zone. GABA-immunoreactivity in the cortical plate appeared early (E14), although the complete maturation of its derivatives was achieved postnatally. At prenatal stages we noted a well-developed system of immunopositive fibers in the subplate. As indicated by the direction of growth cones, most of these fibers had an extracortical origin and invaded the cortex laterally through the internal capsule and striatum. In rostral and middle telencephalic levels, fibers originating in the septal region contributed to the cingulate bundle. Presumably corticofugal fibers and callosal axons were also noticed. At postnatal stages the maturation of GABA-immunoreactivity appeared to be a complex, long-lasting process, in which the adult pattern was produced at the same time as the appearance of certain regressive phenomena. Thus, between postnatal day 0 and postnatal day 8 (P0-P8), GABA-positive populations disappeared from the subventricular zone, marginal zone and to a lesser extent from the subplate. At the same ages we noticed the presence of morphologically abnormal, GABA-immunoreactive neurons in the subventricular zone and subplate which are interpreted as correlates of neuronal degeneration. Most GABA-positive subplate fibers also disappeared whereas GABA-immunoreactive axons were seen in the cingulate bundle until the adult stage. In the derivatives of the cortical plate, the maturation of GABA-immunoreactive elements progressed according to the "inside-out" gradient of cortical development, with the important exception of layer IV, which was the last layer to exhibit an adult-like appearance. Within each layer deriving from the cortical plate (layers VIa to II-III), GABA-immunoreactivity showed a protracted maturation in which the first GABA-positive cells were detected a few days after cell birth but substantial numbers of neurons began to express GABA considerably later. The later phase occurred concurrently with the maturation of GABA-positive axonal plexuses. These results suggest that different GABA-positive populations show different developmental regulation of GABA expression during cortical ontogenesis.
Neocortex neurogenesis and maturation in the African greater cane rat

Abstract:Background: Neocortex development has been extensively studied in altricial rodents such as mouse and rat. Identification of alternative animal models along the "altricial-precocial" spectrum in order to better model and understand neocortex development is warranted. The Greater cane rat (GCR, Thyronomys swinderianus) is an indigenous precocial African rodent. Although basic aspects of brain development in the GCR have been documented, detailed information on neocortex development including the occurrence and abundance of the distinct types of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in the GCR are lacking. Methods: GCR embryos and fetuses were obtained from timed pregnant dams between gestation days 50-140 and their neocortex was analyzed by immunofluorescence staining using characteristic marker proteins for NPCs, neurons and glia cells. Data were compared with existing data on closely related precocial and altricial species, i.e. guinea pig and dwarf rabbit. Results: The primary sequence of neuro- and gliogenesis, and neuronal maturation is preserved in the prenatal GCR neocortex. We show that the GCR exhibits a relatively long period of cortical neurogenesis of 70 days. The subventricular zone becomes the major NPC pool during mid-end stages of neurogenesis with Pax6 + NPCs constituting the major basal progenitor subtype in the GCR neocortex. Whereas dendrite formation in the GCR cortical plate appears to initiate immediately after the onset of neurogenesis, major aspects of axon formation and maturation, and astrogenesis do not begin until mid-neurogenesis. Similar to the guinea pig, the GCR neocortex exhibits a high maturation status, containing neurons with well-developed dendrites and myelinated axons and astrocytes at birth, thus providing further evidence for the notion that a great proportion of neocortex growth and maturation in precocial mammals occurs before birth. Conclusions: Together, this work has deepened our understanding of neocortex development of the GCR, of the timing and the cellular differences that regulate brain growth and development within the altricial-precocial spectrum and its suitability as a research model for neurodevelopmental studies. The timelines of brain development provided by this study may serve as empirical reference data and foundation in future studies in order to model and better understand neurodevelopment and associated alterations.
Early Appearance of Functional Deficits after Neonatal Excitotoxic and Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury: Fragile Recovery after Development and Role of the NMDA Receptor.

Abstract:We sought to determine whether neonatal rats that sustain unilateral cerebral hypoxic-ischemic or excitotoxic insults (1) manifest contralateral sensorimotor deficits during development or in adulthood and (2) recover from those deficits. Seven-day-old (P7) rats received a right intrastriatal injection of the glutamate analog N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). Unilateral hypoxia-ischemia (HI) was induced by right carotid ligation followed by 1.5 h in 8% O2. Both procedures produce neuronal loss in the striatum and sensorimotor cortex. Nonlesioned controls were included. We scored percent forepaw placement on the edge of a horizontal surface, with lateral vibrissa stimulation, from P9 to P19, and at P33 and P50. Then, on P50, rats were treated with the NMDA antagonist MK-801 to determine whether deficits could be reinstated. NMDA- and HI-lesioned rats exhibited a deficit in contralateral vibrissa-stimulated forepaw placing that emerged during the second week of life. Yet, by P33 and P50, the lesioned groups and controls were indistinguishable. MK-801 injection on P50 resulted in transient reinstatement of the placing deficit. After unilateral neonatal excitotoxic or HI brain injury, contralateral sensorimotor deficits are detected, but in many animals, these deficits have resolved by adulthood. Thus, timing of sensorimotor tests may influence their sensitivity for detection of focal neuropathology originating in the neonatal period.
Differential contribution of P73+ Cajal-Retzius cells and Reelin to cortical morphogenesis

Abstract:Cajal-Retzius cells (CRs) are a peculiar neuronal type within the developing mammalian cerebral cortex. One of their best documented feature is the robust secretion of Reln, a glycoprotein essential for the establishment of cortical layers through the control of radial migration of glutamatergic neurons. We previously identified Gmnc as a critical fate determinant for P73+ CRs subtypes from the hem, septum and thalamic eminence. In Gmnc-/- mutants, P73+ CRs are initially produced, cover the telencephalic vesicle but undergo massive apoptosis resulting in their complete depletion at mid-corticogenesis. Here we investigated the consequence of such a CRs depletion on dorsal cortex lamination and hippocampal morphogenesis. We found preplate splitting occurs normally in Gmnc-/- mutants but is followed by defective radial migration arrest in the dorsal cortex, altered cellular organization in the lateral cortex, aberrant hippocampal progenitor proliferation resulting in abnormal CA1 folding and lack of vasculature development in the hippocampal fissure. We then performed conditional Reln deletion in P73+ CRs to evaluate its relative contribution and found that only radial migration defects were recapitulated. We concluded that at mid-corticogenesis, CRs-derived Reln is required for radial migration arrest and additionally identified Reln-independent functions for CRs in the control of hippocampal progenitor proliferation and vessel remodelling.

Assessing complementary therapy services in a hospice program

Abstract:Increasing numbers of people have been supplementing their health care needs with complementary therapies. Complementary therapies have been used to promote health and treat patients with a variety of ailments. Types of complementary therapies used with terminally ill patients have included massage, therapeutic touch, Reiki, art and music therapy, aromatherapy, and hypnotherapy. The purpose of this study was to survey primary caregivers (PCGs) regarding their perceptions and satisfaction with a hospice complementary therapy program. Perhaps this study’s most interesting finding is that patients who received complementary therapies were generally more satisfied with overall hospice services.
Cajal-retzius cells: Recent advances in identity and function

Abstract:Cajal-Retzius cells (CRs) are a transient neuronal type of the developing cerebral cortex. Over the years, they have been shown or proposed to play important functions in neocortical and hippocampal morphogenesis, circuit formation, brain evolution and human pathology. Because of their short lifespan, CRs have been pictured as a purely developmental cell type, whose production and active elimination are both required for correct brain development. In this review, we present some of the findings that allow us to better appreciate the identity and diversity of this very special cell type, and propose a unified definition of what should be considered a Cajal-Retzius cell, especially when working with non-mammalian species or organoids. In addition, we highlight a flurry of recent studies pointing to the importance of CRs in the assembly of functional and dysfunctional cortical networks.
Development and activity-dependent expression of neuronal marker proteins in organotypic cultures of rat visual cortex

Abstract:We are interested in activity-dependent mechanisms which govern the structural and functional maturation of neurons in the visual cortex. We have asked whether the expression of neuronal markers microtubule-associated proteins tau, MAP-2, synaptophysin (p38), and the growth-associated protein GAP-43 are dependent on cortical afferents or spontaneous activity. As a model system we have employed organotypic monocultures of rat visual cortex (OTCs, isolated from subcortical structures) in comparison with visual cortex in vivo (innervated by thalamic and other afferents) at different postnatal ages. We know from previous work that the OTCs, like the cortex in vivo, display a high rate of spontaneously generated action potentials. Therefore, as a third objective, we have analysed OTCs grown as monocultures under chronic blockade of spontaneous action potentials. Protein expression was detected by protein blots and/or immunohistochemistry. The proteins examined in this study are expressed in OTCs, even when grown under activity blockade. However, the pattern of expression differs from the cortex in vivo. Tau is expressed much weaker in OTCs than in cortex in vivo. The expression of the major band of about 50 kDa increases over time in vivo and in OTCs. Smaller isoforms of tau are dramatically downregulated, and larger (adult) isoforms do not appear within 35 days in vitro (DIV). Under activity blockade the expression of tau reaches a maximum by 21 DIV and decreases dramatically, so that the protein is hardly detectable by 47 DIV. MAP-2-immunoreactive proteins are localized in somata and dendrites, but also persist in axons. The expression in OTCs of p38 and GAP-43 correlates well with the expression observed in vivo. Synaptophysin (p38) occurs with a similar time course and amount in OTCs as in cortex in vivo. Synaptic boutons appear in all layers, and specialized terminal elements have been observed. Activity blockade slightly affects the p38 expression, although the late postnatal decline in p38 immunoreactivity observed on protein blots from cortex in vivo and in normal OTCs appears more accentuated in activity-blocked OTCs. The GAP-43 expression is prominent from birth onwards in vivo and in OTCs. However, in normal OTCs GAP-43 is not declining as it is in vivo, although it is downregulated in activity-blocked OTCs. As a major finding we report that neuronal markers which are normally expressed in immature neurons and axons during the period of differentiation and structural plasticity are continuously expressed in OTCs, suggesting that a monocultured cortex retains the ability for growth and structural changes longer than the cortex in vivo.
Sustained neocortical neurogenesis after neonatal hypoxic/ischemic injury.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Neocortical neurons are sensitive to hypoxic-ischemic (H-I) injuries at term and their demise contributes to neurological disorders. Here we tested the hypothesis that the subventricular zone of the immature brain regenerates neocortical neurons, and that this response is sustained. METHODS:Systemic injections of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) and intraventricular injections of replication-deficient retroviruses were used to label newly born cells, and confocal microscopy after immunofluorescence was used to phenotype the new cells from several days to several months after perinatal H-I in the postnatal day 6 rat. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to evaluate chemoattractants, growth factors, and receptors. RESULTS:Robust production of new neocortical neurons after perinatal H-I occurs. These new neurons are descendants of the subventricular zone, and they colonize the cell-sparse columns produced by the injury to the neocortex. These columns are populated by reactive astrocytes and microglia. Surprisingly, this neuronogenesis is sustained for months. Molecular analyses demonstrated increased neocortical production of insulin-like growth factor-1 and monocyte chemoattractant factor-1 (but statistically insignificant production of erythropoietin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, glial-derived neurotrophic factor, and transforming growth factor-alpha). INTERPRETATION:The young nervous system has long been known to possess a greater capacity to recover from injury than the adult system. Our data indicate that H-I injury in the neonatal brain initiates an enduring regenerative response from the subventricular zone. These data suggest that additional mechanisms than those previously surmised contribute to the remarkable ability of the immature brain to recover from injury.
Expression of caspase-3 in rat hippocampus during postnatal development

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the relationship between active Caspase-3 and apoptosis in Wistar rat hippocampus during postnatal development. Methods: Immunofluorescent staining was applied to observe the expression of active Caspase-3 and Hoechst 33342 in the CA1, CA3 and dentate gyrus (DG) of rat hippocampus during postnatal development. Results: The expression of active Caspase-3 reached a peak at postnatal day 7 (P7) in CA1, at P2 in CA3, then decreased with age. Whereas in DG, active Caspase-3 expression increased slightly after P7, reaching a maximum at P14, and remained at high levels for the rest of the investigated period. In addition, the number of apoptotic cells in the three regions all reached maximum levels at P7, then decreased with age. Conclusion: There are specific spatio-temporal patterns of expression of active Caspase-3 in the postnatally developing rat hippocampal subregions and active Caspase-3 in the postmitotic neurons of CA1 and CA3 and in neuronal progenitor cells of DG may have distinct roles and mechanisms during postnatal development.

Abstract:Aging affects the overall physiology, including the image-forming and non-image forming visual systems. Among the components of the latter, the thalamic retinorecipient inter-geniculate leaflet (IGL) and ventral lateral geniculate (vLGN) nucleus conveys light information to subcortical regions, adjusting visuomotor, and circadian functions. It is noteworthy that several visual related cells, such as neuronal subpopulations in the IGL and vLGN are neurochemically characterized by the presence of calcium binding proteins. Calretinin (CR), a representative of such proteins, denotes region-specificity in a temporal manner by variable day–night expression. In parallel, age-related brain dysfunction and neurodegeneration are associated with abnormal intracellular concentrations of calcium. Here, we investigated whether daily changes in the number of CR neurons are a feature of the aged IGL and vLGN in rats. To this end, we perfused rats, ranging from 3 to 24 months of age, within distinct phases of the day, namely zeitgeber times (ZTs). Then, we evaluated CR immunolabeling through design-based stereological cell estimation. We observed distinct daily rhythms of CR expression in the IGL and in both the retinorecipient (vLGNe) and non-retinorecipient (vLGNi) portions of the vLGN. In the ZT 6, the middle of the light phase, the CR cells are reduced with aging in the IGL and vLGNe. In the ZT 12, the transition between light to dark, an age-related CR loss was found in all nuclei. While CR expression predominates in specific spatial domains of vLGN, age-related changes appear not to be restricted at particular portions. No alterations were found in the dark/light transition or in the middle of the dark phase, ZTs 0, and 18, respectively. These results are relevant in the understanding of how aging shifts the phenotype of visual related cells at topographically organized channels of visuomotor and circadian processing.
