Carbonates and Evaporites
Abstract:A series of intracratonic strike-slip faults have been developed in the Shunbei area, Tarim Basin, China. Previous oil and gas exploration practices in the field of marine carbonates have shown that strike-slip faults play an important role in controlling oil and gas accumulation. This paper investigates the deformation characteristics and genesis of the Shunbei No. 12 strike-slip fault zone based on the study of high-quality 3-D seismic volumes and physical simulation experiments. The results show that the Shunbei No. 12 strike-slip fault zone strikes NE overall, in which vertical faults and flower structures are mainly developed in the deep layer, while en-echelon faults arranged in a right-stepping pattern, which are mainly present in the shallow layer. The strike of the pre-existing basement fault, the change in the stratigraphic lithology (salt layer) and multistage activity are the main factors leading to the lateral and vertical segmentation of the strike-slip fault zone. Under the influence of the dynamic background of the basin margin, the fault experienced three stages of left-lateral strike-slip motion: in the middle Caledonian, activity in the fault zone initiated; from the late Caledonian to early Hercynian, the deep fault was activated and affected the overlying strata, forming the first-stage en-echelon normal faults; and in the middle and late Hercynian, the fault was reactivated to form the second-stage en-echelon normal faults. The evolution and model were established in the present study to improve the understanding of the intracractonic strike-slip faults and provide a reference for the analysis of the genesis of the fault and hydrocarbon exploration.
