Viruses from poultry and livestock pose continuous threats to human beings

Abstract:Recently, the paper by Edwards et al. (1) reports that swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV, also known as porcine enteric alphacoronavirus) can replicate in primary human cells, especially human lung and intestinal cells. These results indicate that more attention should be paid to viruses from poultry and livestock, which have a wide host spectrum.As estimated, more than 60% of existing human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and at least 75% of emerging infectious diseases of humans (including Ebola, HIV, and influenza) have an animal origin, with more than five new human diseases appearing each year.
