Abstract:Healthcare continues to transition toward a patient-centered paradigm, where patients are active in medical decisions. Fully embracing this new paradigm means updating how clinical guidelines are formulated, accounting for patient preferences for medical care. Recently, several societies have incorporated patient preference evidence in their updated clinical practice guidelines, and patients in their expert panels. To fully transition to a patient-centered-paradigm, imaging organizations should rethink the formulation of clinical guidelines, accounting for patient preference evidence.

Abstract:Purpose: Best practices exist for communicating medical information to patients, but there is less emphasis on methods to communicate risks, especially in medical imaging. The authors conducted a scoping review of patient decision aids in medical imaging and characterized the presentation methods of imaging risks. Methods: Embase, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsychINFO were searched to identify studies involving patient decision aids used in diagnostic imaging that communicated the risks. Study characteristics included the number and types of risks included, as well as the presentation type and how the probability of risks were communicated. Results: The final study included 46 articles encompassing 27 distinct patient decision aids. Mammography was the most common imaging scenario (22 of 46), followed by lung cancer screening (18 of 46), traumatic brain injury (5 of 46), and urolithiasis (1 of 46). All patient decision aids included risks associated with imaging, but the number of risk types varied from two to nine (mean, 4 ± 2). Twelve risks were identified across the 27 decision aids, but no single study included all risks. Overall, most risks (65%) were communicated with text, and the presentation mode varied by type of risk. False-positive risks were most commonly communicated using a visual format, whereas radiation risk was most commonly communicated using text format. Conclusions: There was no consistent manner of communicating risk to patients, and visual methods such as icon arrays were not consistently used. The variability of both included risks and the risk presentation modes in the patient decision aids may affect decision making, especially among patients and caregivers with lower health literacy and numeracy.

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to identify and map methods used to incorporate patient preferences into medical algorithms and models as well report on their quantification, balancing, and evaluation in the literature. It will focus on computational methods used for incorporating patient preferences into algorithms and models at an individual level as well as the types of medical algorithms and models where these methods have been applied. Introduction: Medical algorithms and models are increasingly being used to support clinical and shared decision-making; however, their effectiveness, accuracy, acceptance, and comprehension may be limited if patients' preferences are not considered. To address this issue, it is important to explore methods integrating patient preferences. Inclusion criteria: This review will investigate patient preferences and their integration into medical algorithms and models for individual-level clinical decision-making. The scoping review will include diverse sources, such as peer-reviewed articles, clinical practice guidelines, gray literature, government reports, guidelines, and expert opinions for a comprehensive investigation of the subject. Methods: This scoping review will follow JBI methodology. A comprehensive search will be conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, the Cochrane Library, OpenGrey, the National Technical Reports Library, and the first 20 pages of Google Scholar. The search strategy will include keywords related to patient preferences, medical algorithms and models, decision-making, and software tools and frameworks. Factors influencing imaging clinical decision-making in low back pain management. A scoping review

Abstract:Background: The use of diagnostic imaging in low back pain (LBP) management is often inappropriate, despite recommendations from clinical practice guidelines. There is a limited understanding of factors that influence the imaging clinical decision-making (CDM) process. Aim: Explore the literature on factors influencing imaging CDM for people with LBP and consider how these findings could be used to reduce inappropriate use of imaging in LBP management. Design: Scoping review. Method: This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review extension for scoping reviews. A digital search was conducted in Medline, the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for eligible studies published between January 2010-2023. Data reporting influences on imaging CDM were extracted. Data were then analysed through an inductive process to group the influencing factors into categories. Results: After screening, 35 studies (5 qualitative and 30 quantitative) were included in the review, which reported factors influencing imaging CDM. Three categories were developed: clinical features (such as red flags, pain, and neurological deficit), non-modifiable factors (such as age, sex, and ethnicity) and modifiable factors (such as beliefs about consequences and clinical practice). Most studies reported non-modifiable factors. Conclusions: The results of this scoping review challenge the perception that imaging CDM is purely based on clinical history and objective findings. There is a complex interplay between clinical features, patient and clinician characteristics, beliefs, and environment. These findings should be considered when designing strategies to address inappropriate imaging behaviour.
Patient Preferences for Diagnostic Imaging Services: Decentralize or not?

Abstract:The objective of this study was to identify patient preferences for outpatient diagnostic imaging services and analyze how patients make trade-offs between attributes of these services using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). We used a DCE with 14 choice questions asking which imaging locations patients would prefer. We used latent class analysis to analyze preference heterogeneity between different patient groups and to estimate the relative value they assign to different attributes of imaging services. Our analysis showed that the “Experienced Patients” subgroup generally value diagnostic imaging services in both acute and chronic situations and had a strong preference for hospital outpatient radiology departments (HORD) that would provide services at lower costs, where their images would be interpreted by a specialty radiologist, the clinic would be recommended by their PCP, online scheduling would be available, service rating were higher, and travel and wait times would be shorter. New Patients significantly valued the service rating of the hospital outpatient radiology departments (HORD) and online scheduling. HORDs can be more competitive by providing services that live up to expectations better than available retail radiology clinics (RRCs). Most RRCs do not currently offer online scheduling so ease of use may also steer patients towards HORDs. HORDs have the advantage of being linked to the main medical center which has the reputation of having clinical expertise and more sophisticated technology. We conclude that there is room for medical centers to build HORDs that provide an appealing and competitive alternative to current RRC.

Health literacy in medical imaging: a scoping review of current evidence and future directions

Abstract:Objective: The importance of health literacy in medical imaging is well recognized, yet the current landscape remains inadequately understood. This study aims to explore the extent of health literacy studies contextualized to medical imaging. Study design: Scoping review. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using three online bibliographic databases namely, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL. We have adopted the concept of health literacy, as a clinical risk and personal asset, to guide this review. Results: Of 311 unique articles, 39 met our selection criteria. Five themes (categories) were identified by the authors: appropriate communication with patients who receive medical imaging test results, appropriate usage of medical imaging, classes and characteristics of eHealth literacy, disease/deterioration prevention, and patient education. Additionally, 17 health literacy assessment tools were identified, including 11 original creations. Finally, 11 recommendations have emerged from this scoping review, offering valuable insights into methods, considerations, and strategies for promoting health literacy. Conclusions: Health literacy studies in medical imaging cover both clinical and public health perspectives, benefiting diverse populations, regardless of underlying medical conditions. Notably, the majority of assessment tools used in these studies were author-generated, hindering cross-study comparisons. Given the innate capacity of medical images to convey intuitive information, those images do not solely benefit the patients who are given medical imaging examinations, but they also hold significant potential to enhance public health literacy. Health literacy and medical imaging are closely associated and mutually reinforce each other.

Abstract:Background: Imaging tests are one of the most frequently used diagnostic modalities in healthcare, but the benefits of their direct impacts on clinical decision-making have been countered by concerns that they can be overused. Assessing the relative value of imaging tests has largely focused on measures of test accuracy, which overlooks more comprehensive benefits and risks of imaging tests, particularly their impact on patient-centred outcomes (PCOs). We present the findings of the Patient Reported Outcomes of Diagnostics (PROD) research study in response to a methodological gap in the area of diagnostic test comparative effectiveness research. Methods: Over a 3-year period, the PROD Study engaged with multiple stakeholders to identify existing conceptual models related to PCOs for imaging testing, conducted primary research and evidence synthesis, and developed consensus recommendations to describe and categorise PCOs related to imaging testing. Results: The PROD framework categorises PCOs from imaging studies within four main domains: information or knowledge yielded, physical impact, emotional outcomes and test burden. PCOs interact with each other and influence effects across domains, and can be modified by factors related to the patient, clinical situation, healthcare team and the testing environment. Conclusions: Using PCOs to inform healthcare decision-making will require ways of collating and presenting information on PCOs in ways that can inform patient-provider decision-making, and developing methods to determine the relative importance of outcomes (including test accuracy) to one another.

Abstract:Different guideline panels, and individuals, may make different decisions based in part on their preferences. Preferences for or against an intervention are viewed as a consequence of the relative importance people place on the expected or experienced health outcomes it incurs. These findings can then be considered as patient input when balancing effect estimates on benefits and harms reported by empirical evidence on the clinical effectiveness of screening programs. This systematic review update examined the relative importance placed by patients on the potential benefits and harms of mammography-based breast cancer screening to inform an update to the 2018 Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care's guideline on screening.

Abstract:Background: Treatment choices in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) involve consideration of tradeoffs between the benefits, toxicities, inconvenience, and costs. Stated preference elicitation methods have been used in the medical field to help evaluate complex treatment decision-making. The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review to assess the evidence base for the use of preference elicitation tools or willingness to pay/willingness to accept methods for HCC treatment decision-making from both the patient and provider perspective. Methods: We performed a scoping review to identify abstracts or manuscripts focused on the role preference elicitation tools or willingness to pay/willingness to accept methods for HCC treatment options among patients, caregivers, and/or providers. Two researchers independently screened full-text references and resolved conflicts through discussion. We summarized key findings, including the type and setting of preference-elicitation tools used for HCC treatment decisions. Results: Ten published abstracts or manuscripts evaluated the role of preference elicitation tools for HCC treatments. The studies revealed several attributes that are considered by patients and providers making HCC treatment decisions. Many of the studies reviewed suggested that while patients place the most value on extending their overall survival, they are willing to forgo overall survival to avoid risks of treatments and maintain quality of life. Studies of physicians and surgeons found that provider preferences are dependent on patient characteristics, provider specialty, and surgeon or hospital-related factors. Conclusion: This scoping review explored both patient and physician preferences towards treatment modalities in all stages of HCC. The studies revealed a large scope of potential attributes that may be important to patients and that many patients are willing to forgo survival to maintain quality of life. Further research should explore both preference elicitation of currently available and emerging therapies for HCC as well as the use of this data to develop patient-facing tools to assist in navigating treatment options.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Advancements in technology have revolutionized the landscape of medical imaging, offering a multitude of modalities. However, this progress is not always fully traceable to patients, necessitating studies in this area to bridge the gap between technological advancements and patients’ insights. This study delves into patient awareness, preferences, and understanding concerning radiation risk in medical imaging procedures using ionizing radiation. Material and methods: An anonymous survey was conducted among 152 patients in Bulgaria who underwent X-ray procedures to gauge their insights into medical imaging. Data analysis utilized SPSS version 20.0, computing frequencies and percentages for categorical variables like gender, age, and education. Results: Significant correlations were found between gender and the need for knowledge related to radiation risks (χ2 = 4.622, p = 0.032), as well as patient understanding of radiation dose information and decision-making preferences (χ2 = 10.800; p = 0.020). Female participants showed higher awareness levels in these areas compared to male participants. Younger patients, notably aged 36-50 (52.6%), comprised a significant portion undergoing X-ray imaging, diverging from global trends. Age correlated with the frequency of X-ray examinations (χ2 = 171.256; p = 0.000) and decision-making preferences (χ2 = 8.324; p = 0.016), with older patients favoring informed decisions with physician input. Education levels significantly influenced radiation risk awareness (χ2 = 7.084, p = 0.008) and understanding of radiation dose information (χ2 = 14.752, p = 0.001). Patients with higher education levels demonstrated a significantly better understanding of absorbed radiation doses compared to those with secondary education. These findings highlight the influence of demographic factors such as gender, age, and education on patient awareness, knowledge acquisition, and decision-making processes regarding medical imaging and radiation risks. Conclusions: Tailored communication strategies, informed consent practices, and ongoing specialist education are crucial to enhancing patient awareness, optimizing decision-making processes, and ensuring radiation safety in medical imaging. Implementation of electronic health records can further improve radiation exposure monitoring, aligning with evolving technological standards and patient needs.
Understanding the factors influencing acceptability of AI in medical imaging domains among healthcare professionals: A scoping review

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential to transform medical practice within the medical imaging industry and materially improve productivity and patient outcomes. However, low acceptability of AI as a digital healthcare intervention among medical professionals threatens to undermine user uptake levels, hinder meaningful and optimal value-added engagement, and ultimately prevent these promising benefits from being realised. Understanding the factors underpinning AI acceptability will be vital for medical institutions to pinpoint areas of deficiency and improvement within their AI implementation strategies. This scoping review aims to survey the literature to provide a comprehensive summary of the key factors influencing AI acceptability among healthcare professionals in medical imaging domains and the different approaches which have been taken to investigate them. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed across five academic databases including Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Compendex, and Scopus from January 2013 to September 2023. This was done in adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Overall, 31 articles were deemed appropriate for inclusion in the scoping review. Results: The literature has converged towards three overarching categories of factors underpinning AI acceptability including: user factors involving trust, system understanding, AI literacy, and technology receptiveness; system usage factors entailing value proposition, self-efficacy, burden, and workflow integration; and socio-organisational-cultural factors encompassing social influence, organisational readiness, ethicality, and perceived threat to professional identity. Yet, numerous studies have overlooked a meaningful subset of these factors that are integral to the use of medical AI systems such as the impact on clinical workflow practices, trust based on perceived risk and safety, and compatibility with the norms of medical professions. This is attributable to reliance on theoretical frameworks or ad-hoc approaches which do not explicitly account for healthcare-specific factors, the novelties of AI as software as a medical device (SaMD), and the nuances of human-AI interaction from the perspective of medical professionals rather than lay consumer or business end users. Conclusion: This is the first scoping review to survey the health informatics literature around the key factors influencing the acceptability of AI as a digital healthcare intervention in medical imaging contexts. The factors identified in this review suggest that existing theoretical frameworks used to study AI acceptability need to be modified to better capture the nuances of AI deployment in healthcare contexts where the user is a healthcare professional influenced by expert knowledge and disciplinary norms. Increasing AI acceptability among medical professionals will critically require designing human-centred AI systems which go beyond high algorithmic performance to consider accessibility to users with varying degrees of AI literacy, clinical workflow practices, the institutional and deployment context, and the cultural, ethical, and safety norms of healthcare professions. As investment into AI for healthcare increases, it would be valuable to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the causal contribution of these factors to achieving high levels of AI acceptability among medical professionals.
Influence of the digital file format on radiographic diagnostic in dentistry: a scoping review

Abstract:Given today's higher demand for online transmission of radiographic images, clinicians and regulatory agencies should be given the evidence they need to guide them in choosing the best image file format to be adopted. To this end, the present scoping review aims to explore, map, and evaluate the literature, with the object of reporting the influence of image file formats on dental diagnostic tasks by assessing intraoral radiographic images. This scoping review complies with PRISMA-ScR. It was customized to assess the risk of bias of the included studies, and was registered on the Open Science Framework platform. The data extraction protocol was developed based on the PCC acronym. An electronic search was conducted in six databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, Lilacs, Cochrane) in December 2023. Original articles were screened, having observational, diagnostic accuracy, and consisting of in vivo or ex vivo laboratory studies investigating the influence of file formats on different diagnostic tasks in dentistry. Eighteen studies, published between the years 1996 and 2022, were included. The following data were extracted from the selected articles: article title, authors' citation, publication date, country, diagnostic task, image file formats tested, compression level, and main conclusion. The most widely investigated diagnostic task was caries lesions (n = 10), led by root resorptions (n = 3), root fractures (n = 2), periapical lesions (n = 2), and periodontal disease (n = 1). The most commonly used radiographic techniques were periapical (n = 12) and bitewing (n = 6). The most frequently investigated image file formats were JPEG (all studies) and TIFF (n = 10 studies). BMP, PNG, and JPEG2000 were also included in 7, 3 and 3 studies, respectively. No studies included the DICOM file format. In regard to the subjective assessment of the several dental diagnostic tasks, the studies mostly showed that the influence of the file formats was not significant (n = 10/55.5%). As for the quality assessment of the included papers, more than 70% of the studies featured a low risk of bias. Current evidence on image file formats and dental radiographic diagnosis is reliable. Any image file format can be used without impairing diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract:Study Design. Scoping Review. Objective. The objective of this study was to conduct a scoping review exploring the extent to which preference sensitivity has been studied in treatment decisions for LSS, utilizing shared decision making (SDM) as a proxy. Summary of Background Data. Preference-sensitive care involves situations where multiple treatment options exist with significant tradeoffs in cost, outcome, recovery time, and quality of life. Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) has gained research focus as a preference-sensitive care scenario. Methods. A scoping review protocol in accordance with PRISMA-ScR regulations was registered with the Open Science Framework (ID: 9ewup) and conducted across multiple databases from January 2000 to October 2022. Study selection and characterization were performed by three independent reviewers and an unbiased moderator. Results. The search resulted in the inclusion of 16 studies varying in design and sample size, with most published between 2016 and 2021. The studies examined variables related to SDM, patient preferences, surgeon preferences, and decision aids. The outcomes assessed included treatment choice, patient satisfaction, and patient understanding. Several studies reported that SDM influenced treatment choice and patient satisfaction, while the impact on patient understanding was less clear. Decision aids were used in some studies to facilitate SDM. Conclusion. The scoping review identified a gap in comprehensive studies analyzing the preference sensitivity of treatment for LSS and the role of decision aids. Further research is needed to better understand the impact of patient preferences on treatment decisions and the effectiveness of decision aids in LSS care. This review provides a foundation for future research in preference-sensitive care and SDM in the context of lumbar stenosis treatment. Level of Evidence. N/A Scoping Review

It is of particular importance in the management of high-risk patients in whom predictive genetic testing can alter health outcomes.PurposeThis review aims to identify the relative importance and willingness to pay for attributes of genetic testing in hereditary cancer syndromes.Data SourcesSearches were conducted in Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, HMIC, Web of Science, and EconLit using discrete choice experiment (DCE) terms combined with terms related to hereditary cancer syndromes, malignancy synonyms, and genetic testing.Study SelectionFollowing independent screening by 3 reviewers, 7 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria, being a DCE investigating patient or public preferences related to predictive genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes.Data ExtractionExtracted data included study and respondent characteristics, DCE attributes and levels, methods of data analysis and interpretation, and key study findings.Data SynthesisStudies covered colorectal, breast, and ovarian cancer syndromes. Results were summarized in a narrative synthesis and the quality assessed using the Lancsar and Louviere framework.LimitationsThis review focuses only on DCE design and testing for hereditary cancer syndromes rather than other complex diseases. Challenges also arose from heterogeneity in attributes and levels.ConclusionsTest effectiveness and detection rates were consistently important to respondents and thus should be prioritized by policy makers. Accuracy, cost, and wait time, while also important, showed variation between studies, although overall reduction in cost may improve uptake. Patients and the public would be willing to pay for improved detection and clinician over insurance provider involvement. Future studies should seek to contextualize findings by considering the impact of sociodemographic characteristics, health system coverage, and insurance policies on preferences.HighlightsTest effectiveness and detection rates are consistently important to respondents in genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes.Reducing the cost of genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes may improve uptake.Individuals are most willing to pay for a test that improves detection rates, identifies multiple cancers, and for which results are shared with a doctor rather than with an insurance provider.

Abstract:Background: Striking the right balance between early cancer diagnosis and the risk of excessive testing for low-risk symptoms is of paramount importance. Patient-centred care must also consider patient preferences for testing. Aim: To investigate diagnostic testing preferences of the Australian public for symptoms associated with oesophagogastric (OG), bowel, or lung cancer. Design and Setting: One of three discrete choice experiments (DCEs) related to either OG, bowel, or lung cancer were administered to a nationally representative sample of Australians aged 40 and above. Methods: Each DCE comprised three scenarios with symptom positive predictive values (PPVs) for undiagnosed cancer ranging from 1% to 3%. The numerical risk was concealed from participants. DCE attributes encompassed the testing strategy, GP familiarity, test and result waiting times, travel duration, and test cost. Preferences were estimated using conditional and mixed logit models. Results: A total of 3013 individuals participated in one of three DCEs: OG (n=1004), Bowel (n=1006), and Lung (n=1003). Preferences were chiefly driven by waiting time, test cost followed by the test type. There was preference for more invasive tests. When confronted with symptoms carrying an extremely low risk (symptom PPV of 1% or less), participants were more inclined to abstain from testing. Conclusions: Access-related factors, particularly waiting times and testing costs, emerged as the most pivotal elements influencing preferences, underscoring the substantial impact of these systemic factors on patient choices regarding investigations.

Abstract:Introduction: Whole body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) is a promising emerging imaging technology for detecting bone and soft tissue pathology, especially in the onco-hematological field. This study aims to evaluate cancer patients' experience of WB-MRI performed on a 3T scanner compared to other diagnostic total body examinations. Material and method: In this prospective committee-approved study, patients completed a questionnaire in person (n = 134) after undergoing a WB-MRI scan to collect data on their physical and psychological reactions during the scan, the global satisfaction level, and preference for other types of MRI or computed tomography (CT), or positron emission tomography (PET/CT). Of all patients who had performed a CT or PET/CT the previous year, 61.9% had already undergone an MRI. The most common symptoms reported were: 38.1% perceived a localized increase in temperature and 34.4% numbness and tingling of the limbs. The scan time averaged 45 min and was well tolerated by most patients (112, 85.5%). Overall, WB-MRI was appreciated by the majority (121/134-90.3%) of patients who said they would probably undergo the procedure again. Patients preferred the WB-MRI in 68.7% of cases (92/134), followed by CT in 15.7% of cases (21/134) and by PET/CT in 7.4% (10/134), with 8.4% (11/134) of patients without any preference. The preference for imaging modalities was age-dependent (p = 0.011), while (p > 0.05) was independent of sex and a primary cancer site. Conclusion: These results demonstrate a high degree of WB-MRI acceptance from a patient's point of view.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Understanding what matters most to patients and their caregivers is fundamental to delivering high-quality care. This systematic review aimed to characterize and appraise the evidence from discrete choice experiments eliciting preferences for palliative care.METHODS: A systematic literature search was undertaken for publications up until August 2022. Data were synthesized narratively. Thematic analysis was applied to categorize attributes into groups. Attribute development, frequency, and relative importance were analyzed. Subgroup analyses were conducted to compare outcomes between patient and proxy respondents.RESULTS: Seventeen studies spanning 11 countries were included; 59% of studies solely considered preferences for patients with cancer. A range of respondent groups were represented including patients (76%) and proxies (caregivers [35%], health providers [12%], and the public [18%]). A total of 117 individual attributes were extracted and thematically grouped into 8 broad categories and 21 subcategories. Clinical outcomes including quality of life, length of life, and pain control were the most frequently reported attributes, whereas attributes relating to psychosocial components were largely absent. Both patients and proxy respondents prioritized pain control over additional survival time. Nevertheless, there were differences between respondent cohorts in the emphasis on other attributes such as access to care, timely information, and low risk of adverse effects (prioritized by patients), as opposed to cost, quality, and delivery of care (prioritized by proxies).CONCLUSIONS: Our review underscores the vital role of pain control in palliative care; in addition, it shed light on the complexity and relative strength of preferences for various aspects of care from multiple perspectives, which is useful in developing personalized, patient-centered models of care for individuals nearing the end of life.

Abstract:Introduction: Thermography offers a non-invasive radiation-free methodology for diagnostic imaging and temperature measurement, but the extent of the current application is unclear, as is the level of evidence for each use case. Moreover, population-based thermographic reference values for diagnostic purposes are nearly unknown. The aim of this scoping review is to identify patient populations and diseases in which thermography is applied, cataloguing of technical and environmental modalities, investigation of the existence of specific reference data and finally exploration of gaps and future tasks. Methods and analysis: PubMed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and CENTRAL, Embase, Web of Science and OpenGrey are to be searched using pretested suitable search strategies, with no language restriction, but abstracts should be available in English or German and articles should not have been published before 2000. This limited time frame is due to the rapid technological progress, which makes it necessary to exclude reports based on outdated technology. The literature found will be selected on the basis of previously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subsequently, relevant data will be extracted from the included references into a predesigned table. The selection and extraction process will be conducted by two researchers independently. The report of the results will be according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. The entire review process will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute approach. The scoping review protocol is registered at the Open Science Framework. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval is not required for this work, but ethical medicine also obliges us to carefully consider diagnostic alternatives and compare them with current standards. The dissemination of the results will take place in a variety of ways. First and foremost through publication in an open access journal, but also through conference proceedings. In addition, this scoping review will serve to open up new research foci with regard to thermography.
