Abstract:Abstract Background Implant-supported removable partial dentures (ISRPD) are supported at the free-end region with implant retainers. As implant retainers prevent denture settlement and facilitate denture retention, this is intended to improve masticatory performance in comparison with that of conventional removable dentures. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of implant retainers at the free-end region of removable dentures on occlusal force and masticatory efficiency using a pressure-sensitive sheet, and measured glucose concentration in saliva after mastication with gummy candy. Methods In the present study, the occlusal force and masticatory efficiency of 13 subjects were measured in the following three conditions: without dentures (Condition 1), wearing dentures but not supported by implants (Condition 2), and wearing dentures supported by implants (ISRPD) (Condition 3). All data were statistically compared. Results Regarding the occlusal force, Condition 3 showed significantly higher scores than the other conditions; however, there were no significant differences between Conditions 1 and 2. Regarding the masticatory efficiency, Condition 3 showed significantly higher scores than Condition 2. Conclusions With ISRPD, the occlusal force and masticatory efficiency were increased in comparison with those with conventional removable dentures.

Abstract:Patients wearing conventional removable dentures often complain particularly about the instability of the mandibular denture. Due to instability of mandibular dentures, there is an increase in the severity of mandibular atrophy. Furthermore, denture instability leads to a feeling of insecurity, inefficient mastication, and overall dissatisfaction with the prosthesis. Placement of endosseous dental implants to retain and support mandibular overdentures or fixed complete dentures have been developed and studied as a method for solving the problem of instability associated with conventional dentures. Implant-retained dentures have many advantages compared to conventional removable dentures. Occasionally, anatomical or financial limitations may prohibit the patient to use of a fixed implant-retained prosthesis. In these cases, a removable implant-retained denture with a limited number of implants may be the possible choice. The aim of this article is to review the literature to compare implant-retained or supported dentures versus conventional dentures in terms of masticatory efficiency, stability, and patient satisfaction.
Effects of Dental Implants and Nutrition on Elderly Edentulous Subjects: Protocol for a Factorial Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract:Background Loss of masticatory function consequent to tooth loss has been associated with changes in food choices and insufficient nutritional intake. To date, interventions based on dental prostheses alone did not significantly improve nutrient intake. Pilot studies have shown positive impacts of interventions combining implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis with brief dietary advice. The relative contribution and the potential synergy of the components of such interventions need to be determined as it has major public health implications for the community-dwelling aging population that continues to disproportionately suffer from tooth loss and its consequences. Objective To assess the effect of rehabilitation of masticatory function with fixed implant supported dentures and nutrition education in older subjects with terminal dentition (stage IV periodontitis) or full edentulism. Methods A 2 × 2 factorial randomized controlled trial with 16-month follow-up of eligible adults (≥60 years) with loss of masticatory function consequent to full arch edentulism or terminal dentition ( n = 120) will be conducted to test whether the rehabilitation of masticatory function with fixed implant supported dentures, nutrition education and/or their combination improves intake of fresh fruits and vegetables for aging subjects. The study has been designed to detect changes in fresh fruits and fresh vegetables intake at 4 months using the 24-h dietary recall method. Changes in protein as percentage of total energy, nutritional biomarkers, plasma metabolomics, oral and gut microbiome, quality of life and masticatory function will also be assessed. Discussion We hypothesize that receiving rehabilitation of masticatory function with fixed implant dentures together with nutrition education is the most effective intervention for improving nutrient intake in aging community-dwelling subjects with extensive tooth loss. The results of this study will assist in designing better treatment regimens, guide medical care for individual subjects, and inform public health and policy. Abstract:Aim: The aim of this within-subject prospective clinical study was to investigate the scope of single implant mandibular overdenture by assessing its masticatory efficiency, clinical performance, and patient satisfaction compared to conventional complete dentures. Settings and Design: Prospective In Vivo Study. Material and Methods: This prospective in vivo study was conducted in the Department of Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, Christian Dental College, Ludhiana. A total of 12 completely edentulous patients received a single implant in the mandibular anterior midline region. After the healing period, the conventional maxillary and mandibular dentures were fabricated. 15 days post insertion of the conventional dentures, patients were evaluated for masticatory efficiency, clinical performance including retention and stability, and patient satisfaction. To evaluate the masticatory efficiency blue raspberry and original pink “Hubba Bubba tape gum” were used as a test food. Colorimetric analysis was done to assess variance of hue. To assess clinical performance, retention, and stability of the mandibular denture was recorded using a digital force gauge and was tabulated as per CU-modified Kapur's criteria. OHIP-14 index was used to assess patient satisfaction. After evaluation of the parameters of conventional dentures, the denture was converted into an implant-retained mandibular denture by chairside conversion with locator attachments. 15 days post-implant loading, parameters of the implant retained mandibular overdenture were assessed again followed by statistical analysis. Statistical Analysis Used: The masticatory efficiency was assessed using a paired t -test. The patient satisfaction was sequentially assessed with Wilcoxon signed rank test and thereafter paired t -test was used to compare between conventional complete denture and overdenture. Clinical performance was assessed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The masticatory efficiency of single implant mandibular overdenture was higher than that of conventional complete dentures. The clinical performance of the overdenture was higher than that of the conventional denture. Stability being a time-dependent parameter might need longer follow-ups for further conclusions. Patient satisfaction with single implant retained overdenture was significantly higher than conventional complete dentures. Conclusion: Single implant mandibular overdenture has improved masticatory efficiency, clinical performance, and patient satisfaction compared to conventional complete dentures.
Implant‐supported removable partial dentures compared to conventional dentures: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of quality of life, patient satisfaction, and biomechanical complications

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare implant-supported removable partial dentures (ISRPDs) with distal extension removable partial dentures (DERPDs) in terms of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs: patients' quality of life and satisfaction) and to determine mechanical and biological complications associated with ISRPDs.MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search was performed on four databases to identify studies treating Kennedy class I or II edentulous patients and which compared ISRPDs with DERPDs in terms of PROMS and studies, which evaluated mechanical and biological complications associated ISRPDs. Two authors independently extracted data on quality of life, patient satisfaction, and biomechanical complications from these studies. The risk of bias was assessed for each study, and for PROMs, the authors performed a meta-analysis by using a random-effects model.RESULTS: Thirteen articles were included based on the selection criteria. The difference in mean scores for quality of life (30.5 ± 1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 24.9-36.1) and patient satisfaction (-20.8 ± 0.2; 95% CI, -23.7 to -17.8) between treatments with conventional and implant-supported removable dentures was statistically significant (p < .05). Implant-supported removable dentures improved patients' overall quality of life and satisfaction. Some mechanical and biological complications, such as clasp adjustment, abutment or implant loosening, marginal bone resorption, and peri-implant mucositis, were noted in ISRPDs during patient follow-up. Studies assessing PROMs were very heterogeneous (I2 = 65%, p = .85; I2 = 75%, p = .88).CONCLUSIONS: ISRPDs significantly improved quality of life and patient satisfaction. Some mechanical and biological complications have been associated with ISRPDs treatment, requiring regular monitoring of patients to avoid the occurrence of these complications.
Comparing Masticatory Performance of Maxillary Mini Dental Implant Overdentures, Complete Removable Dentures and Dentate Subjects

Abstract:Background: Mini dental implant (MDI) overdenture rehabilitation for the edentulous maxilla is a valuable, less invasive and affordable treatment alternative for complete removable dentures (CRD). However, comparative quantification of masticatory performance in different oral conditions are scarce. Purpose: This study compares objective masticatory performance of dentate groups, maxillary CRD and MDI overdentures and subjective masticatory performance in maxillary CRD and MDI overdentures. Materials and Methods: Four groups were defined, age 20+ dentate dental students (DS), age 50+ complete dentate subjects (DP), age 50+ maxillary CRD or MDI overdentures/dentate mandible. Objective masticatory performance was evaluated by measuring circular Variance of Hue (VOH) or the mixture degree of two-color chewing gum (Hue-check View Gum® Test). Additionally, subjective masticatory comparison was investigated in the CRD and MDI groups, with a visual analogue scale (VAS) for different food consistencies and the Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQL) OHIP-14 questionnaire. Results: The mean VOH was 0.11 (SD 0.50, range 0.05–0.27) for the dentate dental 20+ students, 0.13 (SD 0.08, range 0.03–0.31) for the 50+ dentate group (p = 0.774), 0.41 (SD 0.41, range 0.14–0.76) for the CRD group and 0.39 (SD 0.18, range 0.07–0.76) for the MDI group (p = 0.725). Based on the VAS scores, no improvement was found between the CRD and the MDI overdenture group (p > 0.050). The mean OHIP-14 total score was 12.10 (SD 15.87, range 0–56) for CRD, while the MDI group (p = 0.039) saw a significant improvement to 2.85 (SD 2.85, range 0–15). Conclusion: Comparable results in objective masticatory performance were registered in dentate 20+ and 50+ subjects with a remarkable inferior outcome for the CRD and MDI group. Compared to CRD, MDI overdentures revealed no substantial improvement in subjective and objective masticatory performance. However, for MDI a significant increase in OHRQL was apparent.

The effect of prosthetic rehabilitation with or without dietary advice on nutritional status in elderly patients: a systematic review

Abstract:Background: Elderly people frequently report tooth loss, affecting their nutritional status. There is a gap in the scientific evidence about the influence of prosthodontic rehabilitation on nutritional status. Objective: To investigate the influence of prosthodontic rehabilitation combinates or not with dietary advice on nutritional status in elderly patients. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in three electronic databases to identify randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effect of prosthetic rehabilitation on nutritional status in subjects aged 60 years or older, with a follow-up of at least 1 month after prosthesis rehabilitation. Results: Of the 1517 articles identified in the initial search, 12 were selected for the final review. No significant difference between the types of prosthesis were found regarding the chewing by the elderly population. Although patients who received prosthetic treatment had significant improvement in chewing ability, a consistent pattern of improvement in nutritional status was not observed when they did not receive dietary advice. In addition, the association between the condition of the dentition, the masticatory performance and nutritional change of elderly patients has been found. Studies that evaluated simultaneous complete denture treatment and simple dietary advice showed an improvement of nutrient intake in elderly patients. Conclusions: Isolated prosthetic rehabilitation may not have the effect of exerting a change in nutritional status of edentulous elderly patients. In general, simultaneous dietary consulting and prosthetic treatment in combination may improve dietary habits, since masticatory capacity and efficiency are not the only factors that influence the nutritional status of a patient.

Abstract:PURPOSE:This study examined the effect of dental implant rehabilitation on masticatory function following jaw reconstruction.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Patients who received dental rehabilitation after jaw reconstruction with a fibular or iliac bone flap from 2012 to 2018 were examined for masticatory efficiency, electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masticatory muscles, and the distribution of occlusal force. The masticatory efficiency was measured by a spectrophotometer. The asymmetry index of the masticatory muscle was calculated by EMG measurement, and the asymmetry index of the occlusal force was calculated by T-scan analysis.RESULTS:A total of 32 patients were examined, 13 with implant-retained fixed dental prostheses, 9 with implant-retained removable dental prostheses, and 10 with removable dental prostheses. Masticatory efficiency was significantly lower in the removable dental prosthesis group (2.29 ± 0.19) than in the implant-retained removable dental prosthesis (2.45 ± 0.03, P < .05) and implant-retained fixed dental prosthesis groups (2.45 ± 0.03, P < .05). Moreover, the asymmetry index of the masticatory muscle while chewing and clenching was significantly higher in the removable dental prosthesis group (0.099 ± 0.046 and 0.107 ± 0.042, respectively) than in the implant-retained removable dental prosthesis (0.032 ± 0.019 and 0.035 ± 0.021, respectively; P < .01) and implant-retained fixed dental prosthesis groups (0.038 ± 0.021 and 0.046 ± 0.023, respectively; P < .01). The asymmetry index of the occlusal force was also significantly higher in the removable dental prosthesis group than in the implant-retained removable dental prosthesis (0.38 ± 0.08, P < .01) and implant-retained fixed dental prosthesis groups (0.36 ± 0.11, P < .05).CONCLUSION:The results of this study suggest that dental implant prostheses have a greater effect on masticatory function following jaw reconstruction, improving masticatory efficiency, EMG activity of the masticatory muscles, and occlusal force.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to compare patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) of implant-supported fixed complete dentures (IFCDs) and overdentures (IODs).MATERIAL AND METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science were searched, complemented by manual search. Studies published in English up to November 2016 comparing removable with fixed implant-supported prosthesis on fully edentulous patients were included. The review focused on impact on patients' oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), satisfaction or other patient-reported outcomes measures.RESULTS: Of 1,563 initially screened articles, 13 studies including 8 prospective and 5 retrospective studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. OHRQoL and patient satisfaction were the most common PROMs. When evaluating the levels of evidence, five of thirteen studies were graded as level III and seven reached level II. The only randomized control trial was rated as Ib. The methods used to evaluate PROMs were heterogeneous among studies, and there was a lack of standardization in the measurements employed. In general, IFCD and IOD showed no significant differences when compared for PROMs, with a slight trend of IFCD being superior to IOD in most included studies. However, conflicting results were observed in many aspects such as chewing function, phonetics-related function, overall satisfaction and aesthetics.CONCLUSIONS: Inconsistent results were observed in PROMs when comparing IFCD and IOD for fully edentulous patients. A guideline for standardizing the assessment of PROMs in clinical research is needed in order to produce more meaningful evidence-based information.

Short-term Clinical Observation of Modified Resin-Bonded Fixed Partial Denture Utilizing Tooth Undercuts

Abstract:Objective To observe a short-term clinical result of modified resin-bonded fixed partial denture(MRBFPD) utilizing tooth undercuts.Methods One hundred and twenty-nine patients received restoration and totally 196 missing teeth were restored with 148 MRBFPD. According to the positions of abutments in the dental arch, all the MRBFPD were divided into three groups, namely anterior prostheses (40), posterior prostheses (95) and prostheses spanning anterior and posterior (13). The prostheses were examined at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and every year after denture delivery. Retention and marginal integrity of MRBFPD,sensibility, secondary caries and gingival bleeding index were clinically evaluated. The evaluation results were graded as good, acceptable, and bad according to modified United States Public Health service (USPHS) criteria. Survival in this study was defined at two levels: "complete" survival (survival without any debonding), and "functional"survival (survival including loss of retention on one occasion and successful rebonding of the original MRBFPD without further debonding).Results The average follow-up period was 26 months. Fifteen prostheses failed and were rated as bad with USPHS criteria, and ten prostheses were evaluated as "acceptable" because the gingival bleeding index has been rated as 3 or more at one appointment but reduced to 1 or 0 after treatment. The results of the other 123 prostheses were evaluated as "good". The "complete" survival rates were 80%(32/40) for anterior prostheses, 11/13 for prostheses spanning anterior and posterior, and 95%(90/95) for posterior prostheses, while the "functional" survival rates were 80%(32/40), 11/13 and 99%(93/95) respectively. The "complete" survival rate of posterior prostheses was statistically higher than that of anterior prostheses(χ2=5.433,P<0.05). The "functional"survival rate of posterior prostheses was not only higher than that of anterior prostheses(χ2=13.179,P<0.01)but also higher than that of prostheses spanning anterior and posterior (χ2=4.143,P<0.05) statistically. Conclusions The results of this preliminary study suggest that short term survival rate of MRBFPD in posterior area was statistically better than that in anterior area. The outstanding advantage of MRBFPD is the minimum need of dental tissue reduction. However, their long-term success needs further investigation.
Retrospective clinical evaluation of implant-assisted removable partial dentures combined with implant surveyed prostheses

Abstract:Statement of problem: Implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) have been proposed as a treatment option for partially edentulous patients. However, evidence regarding the outcome of implant-assisted removable partial dentures with implant surveyed prostheses is limited. Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the clinical status and complications of IARPDs combined with implant surveyed prostheses in terms of clinical tissue condition, marginal bone resorption, and prosthetic complications. Material and methods: Patients treated with IARPDs combined with implant surveyed prostheses who had worn an IARPD for at least 12 months were included. Twenty-four participants (25 prostheses, 12 maxillary, and 13 mandibular) were evaluated, with 80 implants used as abutments for IARPDs. The average follow-up period was 27.6 months, and the maximum follow-up was 78 months. Implant cumulative survival rate, marginal bone resorption, probing depth, peri-implant inflammation, bleeding, plaque, calculus, and complications were evaluated. Results: No implant failure occurred, and all implants functioned without clinical mobility. Mean marginal bone resorption of implants at 1 year after loading was 0.77 ±0.63 mm, and mean probing depth was 3.4 ±0.1 mm. No patient developed peri-implantitis, and no implant failed. Two clasp fractures, 1 rest fracture, 1 decementation, and 1 fracture of porcelain on an implant surveyed prosthesis were detected at 12 months after loading. Conclusions: Well-planned IARPDs using implant surveyed prostheses were clinically successful. Longitudinal and systematic clinical studies are necessary to confirm these results.
Differences in treatment outcomes of definitive fixed implant-supported restorations with or without an interim restoration: A systematic review

Abstract:Statement of problem: Guidance to determine whether providing an interim implant-supported restoration is beneficial is lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to answer the following focused question: "Does the use of interim fixed implant prostheses before placement of a definitive fixed implant-supported prostheses impact esthetics, peri-implant health, and osseointegration in partially dentate adults?" Material and methods: A search of electronic databases (Medline and Embase) and the nonpeer-reviewed literature for randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and cohort studies in the English language was conducted. Results: Two studies met the eligibility criteria. Heterogeneity of the study methodologies and outcome measures did not allow for meta-analysis. Use of interim implant-supported restorations may improve the esthetic outcome. Occlusal loading of definitive implant-supported prosthesis without the use of an interim restoration may decrease chair time and the number of patient visits. Conclusions: The systematic review has found insufficient evidence to support or refute the practice of providing an interim restoration before delivering an implant-supported prosthesis.

Abstract:Statement of problem: The rotational movements of the distal extension denture base of partial removable dental prostheses frequently harm the prosthesis stability, leading to discomfort during function. Purpose: This study evaluated the use of distal implants to retain and support partial removable dental prostheses and assessed the outcomes with respect to specific aspects of patient satisfaction. Material and methods: Twelve participants (mean age, 62.6 ± 7.8 years) received new conventional mandibular partial removable dental prostheses and complete maxillary dentures. After 2 months of conventional prosthesis use, the participants completed a questionnaire assessing their satisfaction. Implants were then inserted bilaterally in the mandibular posterior region and, after 4 months, ball attachments were placed on the implants and on the partial removable dental prosthesis acrylic resin base. The implants and remaining teeth were followed up with clinical and image examinations. After 2 months, satisfaction was reevaluated, and the data were analyzed by the paired Student t test and the Bonferroni correction (α=.05). Results: Clinical evaluation found stable periodontal conditions around the implants, no intrusions or mobility of teeth, and no radiographic changes in bone level. Participants reported significant improvements (P<.05) in retention, comfort, masticatory capacity, and speaking ability after implant placement. Conclusions: Implant-retained and -supported removable prostheses improve retention and stability, minimize rotational movements, and significantly increase participant satisfaction.

Abstract:Objectives This prospective clinical study aimed to determine the influence of oral prosthodontic rehabilitation with partial removable dentures and simplified dietary advice on glycaemic control, nutritional status and oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) of older adults with type 2 diabetes. Background Individuals with tooth loss who did not wear complete or partial dentures are more likely to be at nutritional risk, suggesting that using dental prostheses would benefit the re‐establishment of an adequate nutritional status and potentially improve quality of life. Nutritional therapy is essential for diabetes prevention, treatment and management, favouring glycaemic control. The literature provides little evidence on the contribution of partial removable dentures to improving diabetes control, nutritional profile and satisfaction in older adults, especially those with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods Older individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus, aged 60 years or older and needing oral rehabilitation with partial removable dentures were eligible for this prospective study. The primary outcome measure was glycaemic control, measured by glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP‐14) questionnaire and the Mini Nutritional Assessment short‐form (MNA‐SF) represented secondary outcome measures. These measures were assessed at baseline and 12 months of follow‐up after prosthesis delivery, combined with simple dietary advice in pamphlet form. The data were analysed using the Wilcoxon matched‐pairs test. Results Forty‐four patients who met the inclusion criteria and required treatment with removable partial dentures were selected for this study, which was carried out for a year. During this period, seven participants declined to participate because they moved to another city. Hence, a final sample of 37 participants (16 men and 21 women, average age of 65.8 years, ranging from 60 to 83 years) were included in the study. No laboratory parameter (HbA1c levels) changed significantly during the investigation. The number of older adults at risk of malnutrition was significantly lower at 12 months than at baseline. Furthermore, nutritional status significantly improved 12 months after prosthodontic treatment combined with dietary advice, and the effect sizes were large. OHRQoL significantly improved after prosthodontic therapy combined with dietary advice. Conclusions Prosthodontic treatment with partial dentures associated with simple dietary advice did not influence glycaemic control but improved the nutritional status and OHRQoL of older adults with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: The integration of quality of life (QoL) assessments into dental health evaluations acknowledges the profound impact of oral health on overall well-being. This study aims to compare the impact of implant-supported complete dentures versus conventional complete dentures on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in elderly Romanian edentulous patients. Methods: This longitudinal study involved 93 initially recruited edentulous patients, with 52 completing the study over an 18-month period. Data collection utilized the OHIP-5 questionnaire, assessing the OHRQoL at baseline with conventional dentures and three months post-implant-supported denture placement. Ethical approval was secured from the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy University of Oradea, adhering to the Helsinki Declaration principles. A statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25 and included non-parametric tests for score comparisons and Fisher's exact test for categorical data. Results: The comparative analysis of the questionnaire responses revealed significant improvements in all five OHRQoL dimensions post-treatment with implant-supported dentures. For instance, the proportion of patients reporting "never" experiencing difficulty chewing any foods increased from 1.9% at baseline to 57.7% post-treatment. Similarly, those reporting "never" experiencing painful aching rose from 3.8% to 76.9%. There was also a notable reduction in discomfort regarding the appearance of mouth, dentures, or jaws from 3.8% reporting "never" at baseline to 75% post-treatment. The improvements in sense of taste and difficulty in performing usual activities saw comparable increases. Conclusions: The findings support the hypothesis that implant-supported complete dentures significantly enhance OHRQoL among elderly edentulous patients compared to conventional dentures, with improvements noted in mastication ability, pain reduction, aesthetics, taste perception, and activity performance. These results underscore the value of prosthetic interventions in dental care to substantially improve patients' OHRQoL.

Abstract:As natural teeth are lost, many older adults choose softer foods lacking in essential micronutrients and fiber, yet replacing missing teeth alone does not positively influence diet. Dietary intervention in combination with treatment to replace missing teeth is increasing, though understanding of effective intervention components is limited. This systematic review synthesized literature relating to oral rehabilitation coupled with dietary intervention in adults. The primary outcome was dietary intake; secondary outcomes pertained to oral health and dietary intervention characteristics including: theoretical basis and behavior change techniques (BCTs). MEDLINE, Web of Science, PubMed and CENTRAL were searched. Nine studies were included. Study designs were heterogeneous involving 526 participants. Narrative synthesis identified improvements in at least one aspect of participants' oral health (i.e. biting/chewing) alongside at least one positive diet/nutrition outcome post-intervention for all studies. F/V results were pooled for three studies using meta-analysis techniques resulting in a standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.29 [CI −0.54, 1.12], p = 0.49, but with marked heterogeneity (p = 0.0007). Few interventions were theory-based and intervention components were poorly described. Overall, narrative synthesis indicated support for dietary intervention coupled with oral rehabilitation on diet. Meta-analysis was only possible with three studies highlighting limitations. Large-scale, appropriately described trial methodologies are needed.Trial registry: This review was prospectively registered with PROSPERO on the 11 July 2017 [CRD42017071075].

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to compare the perceived masticatory ability (PrMA) in completely edentulous patients (EDPs) with thermoplastic conventional complete dentures (CDs) versus single implant-retained mandibular overdentures. Methods: The current study was conducted in the outpatient Prosthodontic Clinic, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. PrMA was evaluated in 45 completely edentulous patients (46% males, mean age 50.4 ± 4.7 years). Each patient received a thermoplastic PMMA complete denture (Polyan IC TM Bredent GmbH & Co.KG, Germany). The PrMA was evaluated at one-month and six-month intervals of denture use. An immediate loading single implant was placed into the mid-symphyseal for each patient, and the denture was adjusted. Subsequently, the PrMA was reevaluated after one month and six months. The data were collected and statistically analyzed using the SPSS@V25 to assess the changes in PrMA. Results: The PrMA demonstrated improvement after six months of thermoplastic conventional denture use. However, this improvement was not statistically significant (p = 0.405). In addition, the PrMA showed a substantial increase following a single implant placement at one and six months (p < 0.001) of the overdenture use compared to the conventional denture. The PrMA insignificantly improved (p = 0.397) after six months of the single implant retained overdenture use. Discussion: The study's findings indicate that using immediate loading single implant-retained mandibular overdentures significantly improved PrMA in completely edentulous patients.
