Abstract:Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease with over 300 million patients worldwide and its severity ranges from mild to severe. Although severe asthma (SA) affects only 5% to 10% of the asthmatic population, it accounts for more than 50% of asthma-related costs. [ 1 ] Despite improvements in patient outcomes, SA remains a major cause of mortality. [ 2 ] The pathogenesis of SA has not been fully elucidated. Studies have reported that SA is often caused by environmental toxins such as allergens, microbial infections, and air pollution. [ 3 ] Bronchial epithelial cells (BECs) are the first line of defense against environmental toxins, preventing them from invading the human body and regulating immune-inflammatory responses. Repeated exposure of BECs to environmental toxins can damage airway histology, cause chronic inflammation, disrupt the airway epithelial barrier, and contribute to the progressive exacerbation of asthma severity. [ 4 ] Therefore, understanding its pathogenesis from the perspective of BECs is crucial for the prevention and treatment of SA.
