Abstract:The main concerns of fuel cell flow field development are ensuring enough reactants delivery into the active surface, uniform reactants distribution over the membrane electrode assembly surface, supplying membrane hydration, and removing extra liquid water droplets. To address these issues, four novel variable porosity foam configurations, including non-homogeneous T-shape (NH-T) and horseshoe-shape (NH-H), for U-turn flow fields, and non-homogeneous diagonal-shape (NH-D) and serpentine-shape (NH-S) for Z-turn flow fields have been developed. Additionally, this study has designed and analyzed a novel and innovative hybrid flow field that combines the variable porosity and block indentation methods for the first time. The performance of these flow fields has been modeled using three-dimensional, two-phase, and non-isothermal computational fluid dynamics simulation. It has been compared to conventional parallel-serpentine channel-rib flow fields (PS). The results demonstrate that the NH-H and hybrid flow fields significantly enhance the limiting current density by 19.4 % and 42.7 %, respectively, and increase the peak net-power by 13 % and 20.4 %, respectively, compared to the PS flow field. Furthermore, a parametric study on relative humidity reveals that, contrary to the PS flow field, the performance of fuel cells with the newly proposed flow fields is enhanced with increasing relative humidity.
