Abstract:This systematic review examines methodological choices in assessing hydrogen production and utilisation technologies using prospective life cycle assessments (LCA) between 2010 and 2022, following PRISMA guidelines. The review analysed 32 peer-reviewed articles identified through Scopus, Web of Science, and BASE. The study reveals a significant gap in the consistent application of prospective LCA methodologies for emerging hydrogen technologies. Most studies employed attributional approaches, often lacking prospective elements in life cycle inventory (LCI) modelling. Although some initiatives to integrate forward-looking components were noted, there was often lack of clarity in defining LCA objectives, technology readiness level (TRL), and upscaling methods. Of the 22 studies that focused on emerging hydrogen technologies, few detailed upscaling methods. Additionally, the review identified common issues, such as the limited use of prospective life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods, inadequate data quality evaluation, and insufficient sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. These findings highlight the substantial gaps in modelling low-TRL hydrogen technologies and the need for more robust, comprehensive approaches to assess uncertainties. The review also identified common practices and areas for improvement to enhance the reliability and relevance of hydrogen technology environmental assessments.

Abstract:This work investigates life cycle costing analysis as a tool to estimate the cost of hydrogen to be used as fuel for Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles (HFCVs). The method of life cycle costing and economic data are considered to estimate the cost of hydrogen for centralised and decentralised production processes. In the current study, two major hydrogen production methods are considered, methane reforming and water electrolysis. The costing frameworks are defined for hydrogen production, transportation and final application. The results show that hydrogen production via centralised methane reforming is financially viable for future transport applications. The ownership cost of HFCVs shows the highest cost among other costs of life cycle analysis.

Abstract:Abstract This study conducted a systematic literature review of the technical aspects and methodological choices in life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of the use of hydrogen for road transport. More than 70 scientific papers published during 2000–2021 were reviewed, in which more than 350 case studies of the use of hydrogen in the automotive sector were found. Only some studies used hybrid LCA and energetic input–output LCA, whereas most studies addressed attributional process-based LCA. A categorization based on the life cycle scope distinguished case studies that addressed the well-to-tank (WTT), well-to-wheel (WTW), and complete life cycle approaches. Furthermore, based on the hydrogen production process, these case studies were classified into four categories: thermochemical, electrochemical, thermal–electrochemical, and biochemical. Moreover, based on the hydrogen production site, the case studies were classified as centralized, on-site, and on-board. The fuel cell vehicle passenger car was the most commonly used vehicle. The functional unit for the WTT studies was mostly mass or energy, and vehicle distance for the WTW and complete life cycle studies. Global warming potential (GWP) and energy consumption were the most influential categories. Apart from the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation model and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for assessment of the GWP, the Centrum voor Milieukunde Leiden method was most widely used in other impact categories. Most of the articles under review were comparative LCA studies on different hydrogen pathways and powertrains. The findings provide baseline data not only for large-scale applications, but also for improving the efficiency of hydrogen use in road transport.

Abstract:The review emphasizes LCA's pivotal role in guiding the hydrogen economy toward a low‐carbon future, positioning hydrogen as a versatile energy carrier with significant potential. In the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, hydrogen emerges as a promising candidate for decarbonization. The United States has the potential to sell wind energy at a record‐low price of 2.5 cents/kWh, making hydrogen production electricity up to four times cheaper than natural gas. Hydrogen's appeal stems from its highly exothermic reaction with oxygen, producing only water as a byproduct. With an energy content equivalent to 2.4 kg of methane or 2.8 kg of gasoline per kilogram, hydrogen boasts a superior energy‐to‐weight ratio compared to fossil fuels. However, its energy‐to‐volume ratio, exemplified by liquid hydrogen's 8.5 MJ.L−1 versus gasoline's 32.6 MJ.L−1, presents a challenge, requiring a larger volume for equivalent energy. In addition, this review employs life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate hydrogen's full life cycle, including production, storage, and utilization. Through an examination of LCA methodologies and principles, the review underscores its importance in measuring hydrogen's environmental sustainability and energy consumption. Key findings reveal diverse hydrogen production pathways, such as blue, green, and purple hydrogen, offering a nuanced understanding of their life cycle inventories. The impact assessment of hydrogen production is explored, supported by case studies illustrating environmental implications. Comparative LCA analysis across different pathways provides crucial insights for decision‐making, shaping environmental and sustainability considerations. Abstract:Climate change is a major concern for the sustainable development of global energy systems. Hydrogen produced through water electrolysis offers a crucial solution by storing and generating renewable energy with minimal environmental impact, thereby reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector. Our research evaluates current hydrogen production technologies, such as alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE), solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC), and anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). We systematically review life cycle assessments (LCA) for these technologies, analyzing their environmental impacts and recent technological advancements. This study fills essential gaps by providing detailed LCAs for emerging technologies and evaluating their scalability and environmental footprints. Our analysis outlines the strengths and weaknesses of each technology, guiding future research and assisting stakeholders in making informed decisions about integrating hydrogen production into the global energy mix. Our approach highlights operational efficiencies and potential sustainability enhancements by employing comparative analyses and reviewing advancements in membrane technology and electrocatalysts. A significant finding is that PEMWE when integrated with renewable energy sources, offers rapid response capabilities that are vital for adaptive energy systems and reducing carbon footprints.

Abstract:Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cell (URFC) is considered a promising green hydrogen technology for producing clean energy, but further research is needed to make it attractive for a wide range of sectors and applications. In particular, the environmental and economic implications related to the life cycle of this electrochemical device play a fundamental role in determining its attractiveness and potential for improvement, and Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) assessment methods are considered to be the most effective means to improve knowledge about these implications. In this context, the present article provides a systematic and bibliometric literature review analysis of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) studies applied to URFCs using proton exchange membrane (PEM) devices. The aim is to evaluate the state-of-the-art of implementations of LCT methods to this electrochemical device in order to highlight good practices and critical issues, referred to both technical and methodological data. A reference sample of 44 scientific articles is extracted from the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases and analysed using two computational tools: VOS viewer and Microsoft Excel. This group of publications helped establish the development over the last few decades of some key themes: LCC and LCA studies applied on PEM and URFC, also extending the search to its main components (such as fuel cell and electrolyser) and its original shape (i.e., regenerative fuel cell). The results of the analysis are presented quantitatively and qualitatively. Regarding the technical issues, there is significant variability in environmental and economic impacts, given by the selected system boundaries, the final users, and the fuel used by the systems. Regarding the methodological issues, no consensus emerges on how to model the LCT studies according to functional units, system boundaries, type of data selected, or model environmental externalities. The analysis also highlights the strong need for a higher level of transparency and harmonization of LCAs and LCCs applied on PEM technologies in order to improve the comparability of the results of these assessments.

Abstract:In light of growing concerns regarding greenhouse gas emissions and the increasingly severe impacts of climate change, the global situation demands immediate action to transition towards sustainable energy solutions. In this sense, hydrogen could play a fundamental role in the energy transition, offering a potential clean and versatile energy carrier. This paper reviews the recent results of Life Cycle Assessment studies of different hydrogen production pathways, which are trying to define the routes that can guarantee the least environmental burdens. Steam methane reforming was considered as the benchmark for Global Warming Potential, with an average emission of 11 kgCO2eq/kgH2. Hydrogen produced from water electrolysis powered by renewable energy (green H2) or nuclear energy (pink H2) showed the average lowest impacts, with mean values of 2.02 kgCO2eq/kgH2 and 0.41 kgCO2eq/kgH2, respectively. The use of grid electricity to power the electrolyzer (yellow H2) raised the mean carbon footprint up to 17.2 kgCO2eq/kgH2, with a peak of 41.4 kgCO2eq/kgH2 in the case of countries with low renewable energy production. Waste pyrolysis and/or gasification presented average emissions three times higher than steam methane reforming, while the recourse to residual biomass and biowaste significantly lowered greenhouse gas emissions. The acidification potential presents comparable results for all the technologies studied, except for biomass gasification which showed significantly higher and more scattered values. Regarding the abiotic depletion potential (mineral), the main issue is the lack of an established recycling strategy, especially for electrolysis technologies that hamper the inclusion of the End of Life stage in LCA computation. Whenever data were available, hotspots for each hydrogen production process were identified.

Abstract:Hydrogen is central to meeting the challenge of climate change. The lack of infrastructure to produce, store, and deliver hydrogen is a significant obstacle to transitioning toward a hydrogen economy. For two decades, researchers have been interested in modeling the hydrogen supply chain network to provide managerial insights for decision-makers. We contribute to this research domain by introducing the life cycle optimization (LCO) modeling framework into the hydrogen supply chain network design (HSCND). Specifically, the life cycle costing (LCC) methodology and the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach are integrated through a bi-objective optimization. The two objectives are levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) and global warming potential (GWP) intensity. The problem is solved by implementing an ε-constraint method. The developed LCO framework is applied to a case study in Franche-Comté, France. Results obtained suggest that the introduction of LCC has a major impact on capital costs. The LCA, especially the life cycle inventory (LCI) approach, enables the LCO model to estimate emissions reasonably. The Pareto front obtained by solving the bi-objective model provides a holistic view of turning points. It is concluded that the modeling framework proposed in the paper can provide decision-makers with (i) comprehensive reflection of hydrogen supply network costs; (ii) a detailed description of hydrogen supply chain network-related emissions; and (iii) the quantification and visualization of the trade-off between costs and emissions.

Abstract:Currently, the increasing price of oil and the possibility of global energy crisis demand for substitutive energy to replace fossil energy. Many kinds of renewable energy have been considered, such as hydrogen, solar energy, and wind energy. Many countries including China have their own plan to support the research of hydrogen, because of its premier features. But, at present, the cost of hydrogen energy production, storage and transportation process is higher than that of fossil energy and its commercialization progress is slow. Life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) was used in this paper to evaluate the cost of hydrogen energy throughout the life cycle focused on the stratagem selection, to demonstrate the costs of every step and to discuss their relationship. Finally, the minimum cost program is as follows: natural gas steam reforming – high-pressure hydrogen bottles transported by car to hydrogen filling stations – hydrogen internal-combustion engines.

Abstract:The need to develop a forthcoming hydrogen economy emphasises the emerging concept of ‘hydrogen valleys', where hydrogen production and consumption are being developed. This study assesses the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) and Carbon Abatement Cost (CAC) for various hydrogen end-use applications within the context of a hydrogen valley located in the southern Italy over different time horizons (Today 2023, Mid-Term 2030, Long-Term 2050). Examined applications include blending into the gas grid, reconversion into electricity for grid balancing by means of fuel cells, hydrogen refuelling stations for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), synthetic methane production, and electro-fuel synthesis. Employing a parametric approach, the study compares LCOH and decarbonisation costs across different pathways. Results indicate current LCOH production values of 3.66–4.90 €/kgH2, projected to decrease to 1.41–1.94 €/kgH2 by 2050. Decarbonisation cost analysis identifies blending and FCEV scenarios as the most cost-effective, contrasting with Power-to-Power scenarios, particularly in the mid and long terms.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be an ideal energy carrier and a kind of useful chemical raw material. Nowadays hydrogen is industrially produced mainly from fossil fuels,which is not environmental enough. It is crucial to figure out the characteristics of different hydrogen production methods so as to provide a splendid technical roadmap. Hydrogen can be produced by variety of technologies and consume variety of energy sources,such as renewables(e.g. biomass,wind energy, solar energy),nuclear and fossils. In this article the environmental impacts of various hydrogen production technologies are evaluated and compared in the view of life cycle assessment. It introduces the theory of life cycle assessment as well as the principle and application of various hydrogen production methods. On the basis of life cycle cost analysis,the costs of technologies for hydrogen production are also presented. According to the Globe Warming Potential and energy consumption data,it is obtained that hydrogen production via renewable energy or nuclear energy has great environmental effects,although most of these technologies are costly in the present. Furthermore, wind-based hydrogen production can save most energy and cost little greenhouse emission,while nuclear-base hydrogen production is expected to be widely applied in the future. Some conclusions of the prospects of hydrogen production are given out in the end.
Future costs of hydrogen: a quantitative review

Abstract:Hydrogen is the key energy carrier of the future. Numerous industrial processes incorporate hydrogen in their transformation towards climate neutrality. To date, the high cost of producing hydrogen from renewable sources has been a major barrier to its widespread adoption. Inspired by these two aspects, many researchers have published cost predictions for hydrogen. This review provides an overview of the extant literature of more than 7000 publications in the last two decades concerned with the topic. After removing articles that do not provide explicit hydrogen production cost projections for the 2020 to 2050 time horizon, 89 articles remain and are analyzed in detail. The review identifies 832 cost forecast data points among these studies and categorizes the data points according to various parameters such as production region, production process and publication year of the study. Through a linear regression, a main trajectory for the development of hydrogen production costs can be derived. The costs of hydrogen from electrolysis are reduced on the basis of this trajectory, starting from the reference 5.3 € per kg, in 2020, to 4.4 € per kg, in 2030, and to 2.7 € per kg in 2050. The costs for natural gas-based hydrogen are almost constant on a globally aggregated basis. There are also major regional and process-related differences. In 2050, Asia has the lowest average costs of the regions analyzed at 1.8 € per kg and production by alkaline electrolysis with average costs of 2.0 € per kg appears to be the most cost-effective electrolysis technology. Although studies show a high degree of variation, it is evident from this review that the trend within certain investigation parameters is well defined. Therefore, researchers and practitioners can use this review to set up further analyses that depend on future hydrogen costs.

Abstract:Hydrogen carriers are one of the keys to the success of using hydrogen as an energy vector. Indeed, sustainable hydrogen production exploits the excess of renewable energy sources, after which temporary storage is required. The conventional approaches to hydrogen storage and transport are compressed hydrogen (CH2) and liquefied hydrogen (LH2), which require severe operating conditions related to pressure (300–700 bar) and temperature (T < −252 °C), respectively. To overcome these issues, which have hindered market penetration, several alternatives have been proposed in the last few decades. In this review, the most promising hydrogen carriers (ammonia, methanol, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, and metal hydrides) have been considered, and the main stages of their supply chain (production, storage, transportation, H2 release, and their recyclability) have been described and critically analyzed, focusing on the latest results available in the literature, the highlighting of which is our current concern. The last section reviews recent techno-economic analyses to drive the selection of hydrogen carrier systems and the main constraints that must be considered. The analyzed results show how the selection of H2 carriers is a multiparametric function, and it depends on technological factors as well as international policies and regulations.

Abstract:An analysis of existing methodological approaches to assessing the life cycle of hydrogen was carried out to determine the level of impact of hydrogen technologies on the environment, including an assessment of their carbon footprint. The features of determining the boundaries of the system, functional unit and other aspects of life cycle assessment are presented. Taking into account the specifics of the fuel and energy complex of the Russian Federation, the carbon footprint of hydrogen was assessed using 5 technologies: steam reforming of natural gas (methane), water electrolysis, gasification of coal and biomass, methane pyrolysis. The results indicate the fundamental importance of the method of electricity production in the comparative assessment of hydrogen production technologies.

Abstract:Liquid hydrogen carriers (LHCs) are important shuttles for molecular hydrogen (H 2 ) as they are convenient to transport as energy-dense liquids over distances greater than 10 000 km. Herein, we provide comprehensive insights into the comparative practicality and safety of irreversible LHCs. From a gas purification standpoint, fewer products in the released H 2 stream result in less separation complexity and lower cost. Unit operational complexities of methanol (MeOH) steam reforming versus fossil steam-methane reforming were analyzed in depth to highlight gas-cleaning complexities. The main challenge is to estimate the costs of LHC reforming, cleaning and compression (RC&C) steps for H 2 production in order to break even with other energy scenarios. To achieve this, two techno-economic analyses (TEA) were performed from the 'vehicle' and 'fuel' points of view. 'Vehicle' analysis compares the use of MeOH-to-H 2 for proton-exchange membrane fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs) with the use of MeOH directly as drop-in fuel for conventional vehicles (ICEVs). 'Fuel' analysis compares renewable MeOH and dimethyl ether LHC transport with pressurized and cryogenic H 2 transport for FCVs. For the analyses in which H 2 gas is produced as a fuel, RC&C steps are assumed to be accomplished off-board or before fueling the vehicles. 'Vehicle' analysis findings indicate that with a moderate tax on carbon emissions, in the year 2035 and beyond, FCVs can be competitive with ICEVs with an RC&C cost of ∼US $ 2–6 per kg H 2 . From the 'fuel' analysis perspective, LHCs break-even with gaseous and liquid H 2 transport at a more flexible RC&C cost of US $ 7.9–11.4 per kg H 2 .

Abstract:Hydrogen is a clean, renewable secondary energy source. The development of hydrogen energy is a common goal pursued by many countries to combat the current global warming trend. This paper provides an overview of various technologies for hydrogen production from renewable and non-renewable resources, including fossil fuel or biomass-based hydrogen production, microbial hydrogen production, electrolysis and thermolysis of water and thermochemical cycles. The current status of development, recent advances and challenges of different hydrogen production technologies are also reviewed. Finally, we compared different hydrogen production methods in terms of cost and life cycle environmental impact assessment. The current mainstream approach is to obtain hydrogen from natural gas and coal, although their environmental impact is significant. Electrolysis and thermochemical cycle methods coupled with new energy sources show considerable potential for development in terms of economics and environmental friendliness.

Abstract:With rapid industrialization, rising fossil fuel consumption, and environmental concerns, developing clean and green energy is an inescapable option. Hydrogen has emerged as a significant potential energy carrier and a viable future replacement fuel for fossil fuels due to its renewable and pollution-free properties. Previous review papers have significantly contributed to the body of literature on the various technologies for producing hydrogen by revealing key insights into their working principles and conditions, as well as the economic and environmental aspects. In addition, they also highlighted the potential pathways to enable the application of these technologies in the context of carbon neutrality. However, these studies have not broken down the evolutionary patterns and developmental progress of either fossil fuel-based or renewable energy-based technologies used to produce hydrogen. In addition, the currently available literature does not contain the most recent research that focuses on the evolution and life cycle of each technology category from a chronological point of view. The key drivers, countries/regions, and their contributions to the field's development have received little attention. As a result, it is critical to monitor technological advances in hydrogen energy production and investigate the key enablers of these advancements. Against this backdrop, the current study employs patent analysis tools to achieve four primary goals: (1) to track the development trends in the field of hydrogen production from 2000 to 2019; (2) to identify and compare the recent development trends in the last five years according to the feedstock, i.e., fossil fuel, water, and biomass-based technologies; (3) to predict the technology life cycle of the two main groups of hydrogen production technologies (fossil and renewable); (4) to identify and compare the key drivers of hydrogen production technologies from a statistical standpoint. The findings of the study may aid in identifying technical prospects in the field of fossil and renewable-based hydrogen production, and decision-makers may use them as a reference in developing a strategic plan for future technological growth.

Abstract:Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) has been proposed as a sustainable alternative to produce valuable chemicals by reducing the global warming impact and depletion of fossil resources. To guarantee that CCU processes have environmental advantages over conventional production processes, thorough and systematic environmental impact analyses must be performed. Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a robust methodology that can be used to fulfil this aim. In this context, this article aims to review the life-cycle environmental impacts of several CCU processes, focusing on the production of methanol, methane, dimethyl ether, dimethyl carbonate, propane and propene. A systematic literature review is used to collect relevant published evidence of the environmental impacts and potential benefits. An analysis of such information shows that CCU generally provides a reduction of environmental impacts, notably global warming/climate change, compared to conventional manufacturing processes of the same product. To achieve such environmental improvements, renewable energy must be used, particularly to produce hydrogen from water electrolysis. Importantly, different methodological choices are identified that are being used in the LCA studies, making results not comparable. There is a clear need to harmonize LCA methods for the analyses of CCU systems, and more importantly, to document and justify such methodological choices in the LCA report.

Abstract:This review presents a broad exploration of the techno economic evaluation of different technologies utilized in the production of hydrogen from both renewable and non-renewable sources. These encompass methods ranging from extracting hydrogen from fossil fuels or biomass to employing microbial processes, electrolysis of water, and various thermochemical cycles. A rigorous techno-economic evaluation of hydrogen production technologies can provide a critical cost comparison for future resource allocation, priorities, and trajectory. This evaluation will have a great impact on future hydrogen production projects and the development of new approaches to reduce overall production costs and make it a cheaper fuel. Different methods of hydrogen production exhibit varying efficiencies and costs: fast pyrolysis can yield up to 45% hydrogen at a cost range of $1.25 to $2.20 per kilogram, while gasification, operating at temperatures exceeding 750 °C, faces challenges such as limited small-scale coal production and issues with tar formation in biomass. Steam methane reforming, which constitutes 48% of hydrogen output, experiences cost fluctuations depending on scale, whereas auto-thermal reforming offers higher efficiency albeit at increased costs. Chemical looping shows promise in emissions reduction but encounters economic hurdles, and sorption-enhanced reforming achieves over 90% hydrogen but requires CO2 storage. Renewable liquid reforming proves effective and economically viable. Additionally, electrolysis methods like PEM aim for costs below $2.30 per kilogram, while dark fermentation, though cost-effective, grapples with efficiency challenges. Overcoming technical, economic barriers, and managing electricity costs remains crucial for optimizing hydrogen production in a low-carbon future, necessitating ongoing research and development efforts.
