Abstract:As digital technology is increasingly integrated into industrial processes, is increased human–computer interaction resulting in labor substitution or job creation? Existing studies differ widely. We study the influence of digital transformation (DT) on enterprises' employment conduct, as well as the economic consequences. With A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2008 to 2020 as samples, we find that enterprises' DT has an employment creation effect and increases the labor employment scale. Further research shows that DT leads enterprises to hire more highly skilled workers and improves employment stability. Enterprises' DT improves the level of internal governance and relieves financial pressure, thus increasing the employment scale and optimizing the employment structure. At the same time, digital technology widens the internal pay gap, improves internal incentive models, and enhances employment stability. We also find that these impacts of DT on employment are conducive to strengthening enterprises' R&D awareness and promoting innovation output. Our conclusions provide theoretical and empirical evidence for improving employment scale and optimizing employment structure in the context of the digital economy.
