Abstract:With the developing technologies of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, intelligent IoT (iIoT) is prevailing currently. Design and implementation of integrated IoT nodes with continuous perception capability are indispensable to realize various smart terminal devices, which would also be vital to reduce the power consumption, improve the real-time performance, and enhance the security/privacy of the IoT system. In this paper, we present the architecture of “Sensing with Computing” and its chip design for smart sensing applications, which would support multi-modal perception signal processing with multi-dimension extension ability. Specially, we explore the analog/mixed-signal circuit designs and algorithm-hardware co-design methodologies for perception signal processing, and we also study the multi-modal integration of novel sensors and their interface technologies. Additionally, some multi-modal smart sensing systems with “Sensing + Computing in Memory” mixed-signal chips would be fabricated, which would support typical always-on smart sensing tasks.

Abstract:Computing is at a moment of profound opportunity. Emerging applications -- such as capable artificial intelligence, immersive virtual realities, and pervasive sensor systems -- drive unprecedented demand for computer. Despite recent advances toward net zero carbon emissions, the computing industry's gross energy usage continues to rise at an alarming rate, outpacing the growth of new energy installations and renewable energy deployments. A shift towards sustainability is needed to spark a transformation in how computer systems are manufactured, allocated, and consumed. Carbon Connect envisions coordinated research thrusts that produce design and management strategies for sustainable, next-generation computer systems. These strategies must flatten and then reverse growth trajectories for computing power and carbon for society's most rapidly growing applications such as artificial intelligence and virtual spaces. We will require accurate models for carbon accounting in computing technology. For embodied carbon, we must re-think conventional design strategies -- over-provisioned monolithic servers, frequent hardware refresh cycles, custom silicon -- and adopt life-cycle design strategies that more effectively reduce, reuse and recycle hardware at scale. For operational carbon, we must not only embrace renewable energy but also design systems to use that energy more efficiently. Finally, new hardware design and management strategies must be cognizant of economic policy and regulatory landscape, aligning private initiatives with societal goals. Many of these broader goals will require computer scientists to develop deep, enduring collaborations with researchers in economics, law, and industrial ecology to spark change in broader practice.

Abstract:The dramatic increase in computer performance has been extraordinary, but not for all computations: it has key limits and structure. Software architects, developers, and even data scientists need to understand how exploit the fundamental structure of computer performance to harness it for future applications. Ideal for upper level undergraduates, Computer Architecture for Scientists covers four key pillars of computer performance and imparts a high-level basis for reasoning with and understanding these concepts: Small is fast – how size scaling drives performance; Implicit parallelism – how a sequential program can be executed faster with parallelism; Dynamic locality – skirting physical limits, by arranging data in a smaller space; Parallelism – increasing performance with teams of workers. These principles and models provide approachable high-level insights and quantitative modelling without distracting low-level detail. Finally, the text covers the GPU and machine-learning accelerators that have become increasingly important for mainstream applications.

Abstract:Because most technology and computer architecture innovations were (intentionally) invisible to higher layers, application and other software developers could reap the benefits of this progress without engaging in it. Higher performance has both made more computationally demanding applications feasible (e.g., virtual assistants, computer vision) and made less demanding applications easier to develop by enabling higher-level programming abstractions (e.g., scripting languages and reusable components). Improvements in computer system cost-effectiveness enabled value creation that could never have been imagined by the field's founders (e.g., distributed web search sufficiently inexpensive so as to be covered by advertising links). The wide benefits of computer performance growth are clear. Recently, Danowitz et al. apportioned computer performance growth roughly equally between technology and architecture, with architecture credited with ~80x improvement since 1985. As semiconductor technology approaches its "end-of-the-road" (see below), computer architecture will need to play an increasing role in enabling future ICT innovation. But instead of asking, "How can I make my chip run faster?," architects must now ask, "How can I enable the 21st century infrastructure, from sensors to clouds, adding value from performance to privacy, but without the benefit of near-perfect technology scaling?". The challenges are many, but with appropriate investment, opportunities abound. Underlying these opportunities is a common theme that future architecture innovations will require the engagement of and investments from innovators in other ICT layers.

A Retrospective Recount of Computer Architecture Research with a Data-Driven Study of Over Four Decades of ISCA Publications

Abstract:This study began with a research project, called DISCvR, conducted at the IBM-ILLINOIS Center for Cognitive Computing Systems Reseach. The goal of DISCvR was to build a practical NLP based AI pipeline for document understanding which will help us better understand the computation patterns and requirements of modern computing systems. While building such a prototype, an early use case came to us thanks to the 2017 IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO-50) Program Co-chairs, Drs. Hillery Hunter and Jaime Moreno. They asked us if we can perform some data-driven analysis of the past 50 years of MICRO papers and show some interesting historical perspectives on MICRO's 50 years of publication. We learned two important lessons from that experience: (1) building an AI solution to truly understand unstructured data is hard in spite of the many claimed successes in natural language understanding; and (2) providing a data-driven perspective on computer architecture research is a very interesting and fun project. Recently we decided to conduct a more thorough study based on all past papers of International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) from 1973 to 2018, which resulted this article. We recognize that we have just scratched the surface of natural language understanding of unstructured data, and there are many more aspects that we can improve. But even with our current study, we felt there were enough interesting findings that may be worthwhile to share with the community. Hence we decided to write this article to summarize our findings so far based only on ISCA publications. Our hope is to generate further interests from the community in this topic, and we welcome collaboration from the community to deepen our understanding both of the computer architecture research and of the challenges of NLP-based AI solutions.

Abstract:Application trends, device technologies and the architecture of systems drive progress in information technologies. However, the former engines of such progress - Moore's Law and Dennard Scaling - are rapidly reaching the point of diminishing returns. The time has come for the computing community to boldly confront a new challenge: how to secure a foundational future for information technology's continued progress. The computer architecture community engaged in several visioning exercises over the years. Five years ago, we released a white paper, 21st Century Computer Architecture, which influenced funding programs in both academia and industry. More recently, the IEEE Rebooting Computing Initiative explored the future of computing systems in the architecture, device, and circuit domains. This report stems from an effort to continue this dialogue, reach out to the applications and devices/circuits communities, and understand their trends and vision. We aim to identify opportunities where architecture research can bridge the gap between the application and device domains.
A Comprehensive Model of Teaching Digital Design in Architecture That Incorporates Sustainability

Abstract:Digital technology and its use in architecture support the construction industry in transitioning to more sustainable building development. Digital technology is widely taught in architecture programs in China, but there are few consistent strategies for combining digital architectural design with traditional architectural design in architectural education. Consequently, sustainable design concepts are not included in digital architectural design courses, and thus architectural education is not concerned with sustainable development. In this paper, we focus on the teaching of digital design in architecture and investigate how digital architectural design teaching can incorporate sustainability. Data from 15 universities were qualitatively analyzed, leading to the development of four models of teaching digital architectural design. Development of the models revealed that there are three increasing levels in digital architectural design teaching and that there is a close relationship between the teaching level and the transfer of architectural knowledge. This recognition led to the development of a single comprehensive model of digital architectural design teaching that is universally applicable. This research increases our understanding of digital architectural design teaching in architecture programs and strengthens the multi-level connections between digital architectural design teaching and designing and constructing sustainable built objects.

Abstract:With the end of Moore's law and Dennard's scaling law, it is becoming increasingly difficult to improve the performance and efficiency of computing systems by relying on the progress of the integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing process.The evolution of computing architecture has become an important technical approach for the development of computing systems in the future.In this article, the evolution of the architecture is first reviewed from different perspectives, including the application adaptability, computation-driven mode, changes in the center of the computing system, the composition of the computing cores, and computing logic usage.The advantages and disadvantages of different architectures are summarized, and then the ability to computing systems in the future under the conditions of rapid development of manual intelligence and big data is analyzed.Finally, a software-defined computing architecture is proposed, and its key research contents and key technologies are summarized, which provides a feasible technical approach for the future development of computing architectures.

Abstract:It has been a long time that computer architecture and systems are optimized for efficient execution of machine learning (ML) models. Now, it is time to reconsider the relationship between ML and systems, and let ML transform the way that computer architecture and systems are designed. This embraces a twofold meaning: improvement of designers' productivity, and completion of the virtuous cycle. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the work that applies ML for computer architecture and system design. First, we perform a high-level taxonomy by considering the typical role that ML techniques take in architecture/system design, i.e., either for fast predictive modeling or as the design methodology. Then, we summarize the common problems in computer architecture/system design that can be solved by ML techniques, and the typical ML techniques employed to resolve each of them. In addition to emphasis on computer architecture in a narrow sense, we adopt the concept that data centers can be recognized as warehouse-scale computers; sketchy discussions are provided in adjacent computer systems, such as code generation and compiler; we also give attention to how ML techniques can aid and transform design automation. We further provide a future vision of opportunities and potential directions, and envision that applying ML for computer architecture and systems would thrive in the community.

Abstract:In the process of rewriting large physics codes at Los Alamos National Laboratory to perform well on new architectures such as many-core, GPU, and Intel MIC, we have found a number of areas in which sustainable software practices can provide significant advantages. We describe several specific advantages of sustainable practices for future architectures, and report on two small experimental projects at LANL intended to raise awareness of new software practices and programming approaches for new architectures.

Abstract:Computer Architecture, broadly, involves optimizing hardware and software for current and future processing systems. Although there are several other top venues to publish Computer Architecture research, including ASPLOS, HPCA, and MICRO, ISCA (the International Symposium on Computer Architecture) is one of the oldest, longest running, and most prestigious venues for publishing Computer Architecture research. Since 1973, except for 1975, ISCA has been organized annually. Accordingly, this year will be the 50th year of ISCA. Thus, we set out to analyze the past 50 years of ISCA to understand who and what has been driving and innovating computing systems thus far. Our analysis identifies several interesting trends that reflect how ISCA, and Computer Architecture in general, has grown and evolved in the past 50 years, including minicomputers, general-purpose uniprocessor CPUs, multiprocessor and multi-core CPUs, general-purpose GPUs, and accelerators.

Abstract:Recent events, in particular the COVID-19 pandemic, have demonstrated the need for digital tools allowing people to meet, interact, and collaborate. Software-enabled systems must facilitate not only collaborative work, but also humanitarian needs like healthcare, online learning from kindergarten to postgraduate levels, and social networking. Such systems must be developed considering personal needs, the diversity of the population, their privacy needs, and physical safety. Moreover, this new generation of software-enabled systems must provide us a more sustainable world, from smart homes to industries and cities. All these challenges highlight critical considerations on what software-enabled systems to develop in the coming years, and especially on how to design these systems to offer a more Sustainable Digital Society. The software engineering community is facing these challenges when developing solutions, in contemporary areas such as Cyber Physical Systems, Internet of Things, and Cloud/Edge-computing. Evidence shows that one of the most critical success factors for the design and development of these systems has been raising the level of abstraction by focusing on their software architecture. The architecture of a software system describes its static and dynamic structures in terms of its software components, their inter-connection and properties as well as the rationale explaining its design and evolution. A prescriptive architecture can be an artifact devised by an architect to make a decision about what design to choose among alternatives, as well as an artifact dynamically composed by a running system that uses it to make decisions about selecting alternative configurations to deal with runtime change. This special issue aims at establishing a step forward to architecting the software systems demanded by a Sustainable Digital Society. Among others, this special issue aims at contributing with theories, methods, techniques, and tools that software architects and engineers need in order to ensure that the architectures of these software-enabled systems demanded by our digital society will be understandable, verifiable, adaptable, and evolvable to meet their even changing functional and quality requirements. Contributions present evidence highlighting how they pursue and contribute to a Sustainable Digital Society. Moreover, case studies compiling both success and failure experiences contribute to this Special Issue for exploitation in future research.

Abstract:Computing systems are widely used in medical diagnosis, climate prediction, autonomous vehicles, etc. As the key part of electronics, the performance of computing systems is crucial in the intellectualization of the equipment. The conflict between performance, efficiency, and cost can be solved by choosing an appropriate computing system architecture. In order to provide useful advice and instructions for the designers to fabricate high-performance computing systems, this paper reviews the Chiplet-based computing system architectures, including computing architecture and memory architecture. Firstly, the computing architecture used for high-performance computing, mobile, and PC is presented and summarized. Secondly, the memory architecture based on mainstream memory and emerging non-volatile memory used for data storing and processing are introduced, and the key parameters of memory are compared and discussed. Finally, this paper is concluded, and the future perspectives of computing system architecture based on Chiplet are presented.

Abstract:The broad landscape of new technologies currently being explored makes the current times very exciting for computer systems research. The community is actively researching an extensive set of topics, ranging from the small (e.g., energy-independent embedded devices) to the large (e.g., brain-scale deep learning), simultaneously addressing technology discontinuities (End of Moore's Law and EnergyWall), new challenges in security and privacy, and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). While industry is applying some of these technologies, its efforts are necessarily focused on only a few areas, and on relatively short-term horizons. This offers academic researchers the opportunity to attack the problems with a broader and longer-term view. Further, in recent times, the computer systems community has started to pay increasing attention to non-performance measures, such as security, complexity, and power. To make progress in this multi-objective world, the composition of research teams needs to change. Teams have to become inter-disciplinary, enabling the flow of ideas across computing fields. While many research directions are interesting, this report outlines a few high-priority areas where inter-disciplinary research is likely to have a high payoff: a) Developing the components for a usable planet-scale Internet of Things (IoT), with provably energy-efficient devices. This report envisions a highly-available, geographically distributed, heterogeneous large-scale IoT system with the same efficiency, maintainability, and usability as today's data centers. This planet-scale IoT will be populated by many computationally-sophisticated IoT devices that are ultra-low power and operate energy-independently. b) Rethinking the hardware-software security contract in the age of AI. In light of the recent security vulnerabilities, this report argues for building hardware abstractions that communicate security guarantees, and for allowing software to communicate its security and privacy requirements to the hardware. Further, security and privacy mechanisms should be integrated into the disruptive emerging technologies that support AI. c) Making AI a truly dependable technology that is usable by all the citizens in all settings. As AI frameworks automate an increasing number of critical operations, this report argues for end-to-end dependable AI, where both the hardware and the software are understood and verified. Further, AI needs to turn from a centralized tool into a capability easily usable by all the citizens in all settings to meet an ever expanding range of needs. d) Developing solutions to tackle extreme complexity, possibly based on formal methods. This report argues for the need to tame the explosion of system complexity and heterogeneity by creating new abstractions and complexity-management solutions. Such solutions need to be accessible to domain experts. An important step towards this goal is to scale out and extend formal methods for the real world. This report also describes other, related research challenges.
