Abstract:ABSTRACTIn recent years, there has been a rapidly growing recognition of the importance of conducting hands-on HW-SW co-design labs with real hardware (e.g., programmable logic chips named FPGAs) while studying computing curricula, especially the computer systems (CSys) courses. However, using FPGA is quite atime-consuming and error-prone process for students, and manipulating FPGA development tools and boards also distracts students and instructors. To overcome these obstacles and improve agility, we introduce an in-house platform named EdUCAS, in combination with the previously designed cloud FPGA servers for students to automatically conduct computer systems course projects. EdUCAS aims at enabling students to concentrate on their logic designs using hardware description language (e.g., Verilog HDL), without wasting useless time in FPGA tools and experimental environment.

Abstract:Programming Computable Functions (PCF) is a simplified programming language which provides the theoretical basis of modern functional programming languages. Answer set programming (ASP) is a programming paradigm focused on solving search problems. In this paper we provide a translation from PCF to ASP. Using this translation it becomes possible to specify search problems using PCF.

Abstract:Existing CSP model checkers are incapable of verifying multiple properties concurrently in one run of a model checker, and when trying to alleviate state space explosion problem, most of reduction work are usually done after rather than before the complete state space was produced. Thus, A new CSP model checking tool named ACSPChecker was developed based on answer set programming, which is a declarative logic programming paradigm for solving combinational search problems with the feature of completely free of sequential dependencies, to verifying multiple properties concurrently in one run of a model checker. Additionally, It integrated an abstraction method, which could be used to alleviate the state space explosion before the complete state space was produced. Furthermore, a preprocessing technique of properties was proposed to improve the verification efficiency by reducing the expense spending on replicated verification of the same sub formulas. The feasibility and efficiency of ACSPChecker are illustrated by the experiments with a classic concurrency problem - dining philosophers problem.

Abstract:State of the art component-based software collections - such as FOSS distributions - are made of up to dozens of thousands components, with complex inter-dependencies and conflicts. Given a particular installation of such a system, each request to alter the set of installed components has potentially (too) many satisfying answers. We present an architecture that allows to express advanced user preferences about package selection in FOSS distributions. The architecture is composed by a distribution-independent format for describing available and installed packages called CUDF (Common Upgradeability Description Format), and a foundational language called MooML to specify optimization criteria. We present the syntax and semantics of CUDF and MooML, and discuss the partial evaluation mechanism of MooML which allows to gain efficiency in package dependency solvers.

Abstract:Combinatory categorial grammar (CCG) is a grammar formalism used for natural language parsing. CCG assigns structured lexical categories to words and uses a small set of combinatory rules to combine these categories to parse a sentence. In this work we propose and implement a new approach to CCG parsing that relies on a prominent knowledge representation formalism, answer set programming (ASP) - a declarative programming paradigm. We formulate the task of CCG parsing as a planning problem and use an ASP computational tool to compute solutions that correspond to valid parses. Compared to other approaches, there is no need to implement a specific parsing algorithm using such a declarative method. Our approach aims at producing all semantically distinct parse trees for a given sentence. From this goal, normalization and efficiency issues arise, and we deal with them by combining and extending existing strategies. We have implemented a CCG parsing tool kit - AspCcgTk - that uses ASP as its main computational means. The C&C supertagger can be used as a preprocessor within AspCcgTk, which allows us to achieve wide-coverage natural language parsing.
Automating UAV Flight Readiness Approval using Goal-Directed Answer Set Programming

Abstract:We present a novel application of Goal-Directed Answer Set Programming that digitizes the model aircraft operator's compliance verification against the Academy of Model Aircrafts (AMA) safety code. The AMA safety code regulates how AMA flyers operate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for limited recreational purposes. Flying drones and their operators are subject to various rules before and after the operation of the aircraft to ensure safe flights. In this paper, we leverage Answer Set Programming to encode the AMA safety code and automate compliance checks. To check compliance, we use the s(CASP) which is a goal-directed ASP engine. By using s(CASP) the operators can easily check for violations and obtain a justification tree explaining the cause of the violations in human-readable natural language. Further, we implement an algorithm to help the operators obtain the minimal set of conditions that need to be satisfied in order to pass the compliance check. We develop a front-end questionnaire interface that accepts various conditions and use the backend s(CASP) engine to evaluate whether the conditions adhere to the regulations. We also leverage s(CASP) implemented in SWI-Prolog, where SWI-Prolog exposes the reasoning capabilities of s(CASP) as a REST service. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first application of ASP in the AMA and Avionics Compliance and Certification space.

Theory and Practice of Logic Programming

Abstract:Recent progress in logic programming (e.g. the development of the answer set programming (ASP) paradigm) has made it possible to teach it to general undergraduate and even middle/high school students. Given the limited exposure of these students to computer science, the complexity of downloading, installing, and using tools for writing logic programs could be a major barrier for logic programming to reach a much wider audience. We developed onlineSPARC, an online ASP environment with a self-contained file system and a simple interface. It allows users to type/edit logic programs and perform several tasks over programs, including asking a query to a program, getting the answer sets of a program, and producing a drawing/animation based on the answer sets of a program.

Justifications for Goal-Directed Constraint Answer Set Programming

Abstract:Ethical and legal concerns make it necessary for programs that may directly influence the life of people (via, e.g., legal or health counseling) to justify in human-understandable terms the advice given. Answer Set Programming has a rich semantics that makes it possible to very concisely express complex knowledge. However, justifying why an answer is a consequence from an ASP program may be non-trivial -- even more so when the user is an expert in a given domain, but not necessarily knowledgeable in ASP. Most ASP systems generate answers using SAT-solving procedures on ground rules that do not match how humans perceive reasoning. We propose using s(CASP), a query-driven, top-down execution model for predicate ASP with constraints to generate justification trees of (constrained) answer sets. The operational semantics of s(CASP) relies on backward chaining, which is intuitive to follow and lends itself to generating explanations that are easier to translate into natural language. We show how s(CASP) provides minimal justifications for, among others, relevant examples proposed in the literature, both as search trees but, more importantly, as explanations in natural language. We validate our design with real ASP applications and evaluate the cost of generating s(CASP) justification trees.

Abstract:This paper describes an approach to the methodology of answer set programming (ASP) that can facilitate the design of encodings that are easy to understand and provably correct. Under this approach, after appending a rule or a small group of rules to the emerging program we include a comment that states what has been "achieved" so far. This strategy allows us to set out our understanding of the design of the program by describing the roles of small parts of the program in a mathematically precise way.

Abstract:This paper introduces CONFIGEN, a tool that helps modularizing software. CONFIGEN allows the developer to select a set of elementary components for his software through an interactive interface. Configuration files for use by C/assembly code and Makefiles are then automatically generated, and we successfully used it as a helper tool for complex system software refactoring. CONFIGEN is based on propositional logic, and its implementation faces hard theoretical problems.

Abstract:Recently, planning based on answer set programming has been proposed as an approach towards realizing declarative planning systems. In this paper, we present the language Kc, which extends the declarative planning language K by action costs. Kc provides the notion of admissible and optimal plans, which are plans whose overall action costs are within a given limit resp. minimum over all plans (i.e., cheapest plans). As we demonstrate, this novel language allows for expressing some nontrivial planning tasks in a declarative way. Furthermore, it can be utilized for representing planning problems under other optimality criteria, such as computing ``shortest'' plans (with the least number of steps), and refinement combinations of cheapest and fastest plans. We study complexity aspects of the language Kc and provide a transformation to logic programs, such that planning problems are solved via answer set programming. Furthermore, we report experimental results on selected problems. Our experience is encouraging that answer set planning may be a valuable approach to expressive planning systems in which intricate planning problems can be naturally specified and solved.

Abstract:Abstract Constraint answer set programming or CASP, for short, is a hybrid approach in automated reasoning putting together the advances of distinct research areas such as answer set programming, constraint processing, and satisfiability modulo theories. CASP demonstrates promising results, including the development of a multitude of solvers: acsolver, clingcon, ezcsp, idp, inca, dingo, mingo, aspmt2smt, clingo[l,dl], and ezsmt . It opens new horizons for declarative programming applications such as solving complex train scheduling problems. Systems designed to find solutions to constraint answer set programs can be grouped according to their construction into, what we call, integrational or translational approaches. The focus of this paper is an overview of the key ingredients of the design of constraint answer set solvers drawing distinctions and parallels between integrational and translational approaches. The paper also provides a glimpse at the kind of programs its users develop by utilizing a CASP encoding of Traveling Salesman problem for illustration. In addition, we place the CASP technology on the map among its automated reasoning peers as well as discuss future possibilities for the development of CASP.

Abstract:We present a new approach to enhancing Answer Set Programming (ASP) with Constraint Processing techniques which allows for solving interesting Constraint Satisfaction Problems in ASP. We show how constraints on finite domains can be decomposed into logic programs such that unit-propagation achieves arc, bound or range consistency. Experiments with our encodings demonstrate their computational impact.

Abstract:Answer set programming (ASP) is a well-established knowledge representation formalism. Most ASP solvers are based on (extensions of) technology from Boolean satisfiability solving. While these solvers have shown to be very successful in many practical applications, their strength is limited by their underlying proof system, resolution. In this paper, we present a new tool LP2PB that translates ASP programs into pseudo-Boolean theories, for which solvers based on the (stronger) cutting plane proof system exist. We evaluate our tool, and the potential of cutting-plane-based solving for ASP on traditional ASP benchmarks as well as benchmarks from pseudo-Boolean solving. Our results are mixed: overall, traditional ASP solvers still outperform our translational approach, but several benchmark families are identified where the balance shifts the other way, thereby suggesting that further investigation into a stronger proof system for ASP is valuable.
A Paraconsistent ASP-like Language with Tractable Model Generation

Abstract:Answer Set Programming (ASP) is nowadays a dominant rule-based knowledge representation tool. Though existing ASP variants enjoy efficient implementations, generating an answer set remains intractable. The goal of this research is to define a new \asp-like rule language, 4SP, with tractable model generation. The language combines ideas of ASP and a paraconsistent rule language 4QL. Though 4SP shares the syntax of \asp and for each program all its answer sets are among 4SP models, the new language differs from ASP in its logical foundations, the intended methodology of its use and complexity of computing models. As we show in the paper, 4QL can be seen as a paraconsistent counterpart of ASP programs stratified with respect to default negation. Although model generation of well-supported models for 4QL programs is tractable, dropping stratification makes both 4QL and ASP intractable. To retain tractability while allowing non-stratified programs, in 4SP we introduce trial expressions interlacing programs with hypotheses as to the truth values of default negations. This allows us to develop a~model generation algorithm with deterministic polynomial time complexity. We also show relationships among 4SP, ASP and 4QL.

Abstract:Encoding finite linear CSPs as Boolean formulas and solving them by using modern SAT solvers has proven to be highly effective by the award-winning sugar system. We here develop an alternative approach based on ASP that serves two purposes. First, it provides a library for solving CSPs as part of an encompassing logic program. Second, it furnishes an ASP-based CP solver similar to sugar. Both tasks are addressed by using first-order ASP encodings that provide us with a high degree of flexibility, either for integration within ASP or for easy experimentation with different implementations. When used as a CP solver, the resulting system aspartame re-uses parts of sugar for parsing and normalizing CSPs. The obtained set of facts is then combined with an ASP encoding that can be grounded and solved by off-the-shelf ASP systems. We establish the competitiveness of our approach by empirically contrasting aspartame and sugar.

Abstract:We present a system capable of automatically solving combinatorial logic puzzles given in (simplified) English. It involves translating the English descriptions of the puzzles into answer set programming(ASP) and using ASP solvers to provide solutions of the puzzles. To translate the descriptions, we use a lambda-calculus based approach using Probabilistic Combinatorial Categorial Grammars (PCCG) where the meanings of words are associated with parameters to be able to distinguish between multiple meanings of the same word. Meaning of many words and the parameters are learned. The puzzles are represented in ASP using an ontology which is applicable to a large set of logic puzzles.

Abstract:State-of-the-art answer set programming (ASP) solvers rely on a program called a grounder to convert non-ground programs containing variables into variable-free, propositional programs. The size of this grounding depends heavily on the size of the non-ground rules, and thus, reducing the size of such rules is a promising approach to improve solving performance. To this end, in this paper we announce lpopt, a tool that decomposes large logic programming rules into smaller rules that are easier to handle for current solvers. The tool is specifically tailored to handle the standard syntax of the ASP language (ASP-Core) and makes it easier for users to write efficient and intuitive ASP programs, which would otherwise often require significant handtuning by expert ASP engineers. It is based on an idea proposed by Morak and Woltran (2012) that we extend significantly in order to handle the full ASP syntax, including complex constructs like aggregates, weak constraints, and arithmetic expressions. We present the algorithm, the theoretical foundations on how to treat these constructs, as well as an experimental evaluation showing the viability of our approach.

Product Configuration Design Based On Extensible Product Family For Mass Customization

Abstract:A new product configuration design method based on extensible product family is presented in this paper. The extensible product family is a multi-layered model with extensible function, extensible principle, and extensible structure. Treating extensible element as a basic unit, the model can be used to associate extensible parts with reusable factors in the range from 0 to 1. The principle of configuration method has been implemented in software. Complicated rule editing and modification are handled by Ch, an embeddable C/C++ interpreter. Designers can establish and edit the configuration rules including formulas dynamically. According to the client requirements and nearest-neighbor matching, the results of the designed configuration can be obtained automatically. Furthermore, the multi-dimensional information about parameters and reusable factors can be displayed and analyzed graphically. If the client requirements or configuration rules are changed, the system can be easily re-configured to obtain designed results based on the new configuration quickly. The system has been successfully deployed and used to design complicated products with a large number of configurations and different specifications such as elevators, machine tools and smut-collectors.

Abstract:We present a constraint-based approach to interactive product configuration. Our configurator tool FdConfig is based on feature models for the representation of the product domain. Such models can be directly mapped into constraint satisfaction problems and dealt with by appropriate constraint solvers. During the interactive configuration process the user generates new constraints as a result of his configuration decisions and even may retract constraints posted earlier. We discuss the configuration process, explain the underlying techniques and show optimizations.
