Abstract:Abstract For the purpose of deriving, from laboratory animal data, the equilibrium level of radionuclides in humans, interspecies correlations between body weights and equilibrium levels of cesium and potassium after oral administrations were studied in mice, rats, rabbits and humans. The equilibrium levels, A, which were expressed in multiples of the daily intakes can be related to the body weights, W, of the mammals in grams as follows: A = 0.85W0.45 for cesium and A = 0.45 W0.45 for potassium, except for the rabbits. In connection with the interpretation of the above formulae, the following four points were also investigated. (1) The ratios of the urinary excretion to the total excretion in the mammals are about 0.85 for cesium and potassium. (2) The renal clearances for cesium and potassium are nearly proportional to the 2/3 power of the kidney weights, and the clearance values for potassium are about two times higher than for cesium. (3) The kidney weights are proportional to the 0.84 power of the total body weights. (4) The ratios of the mean body concentration to the plasma concentration are nearly constant (=∼10) for cesium and potassium. Using these four facts, the formulae of the interspecies correlation were derived.
