Abstract:This essay provides a review on the recreational waterfront foreign literatures searched on SSCI and SCI databases,highlighting representative perspectives in the research that has been conducted to date.Study contents include four study modules of waterfront environment protection,waterfront recreation conflict,waterfront recreation management as well as waterfront recreation value evaluation.Differences in study contents exist between Chinese and foreign scholars in terms of research perspective,positioning of waterfront recreation on community and direction of waterfront recreational spatial development.Based on depth analysis of these differences,this essay briefly discusses the enlightenment on Chinese relevant studies.

Abstract:Special interest tourism has emerged as a valuable niche market for tourism destinations in the past decade. However, tourism scholars have generally struggled to answer McKercher and Chan's [2005. How special is special interest tourism? Journal of Travel Research, 44(1), 21-31] question, 'How special is special interest tourism?' Such ambiguity extends to the related enquiry, 'How special are special interest tourists?', in attempting to define special interest tourists. This perspective research letter discusses these questions in terms of Chinese outbound tourism. Based upon the reflection of previous research, the authors' thoughts and ongoing research in this area, knowledge gaps are identified and research directions for scholars who are also interested special interest tourism are offered.

Abstract:The scientific understanding of the recreation experience and the environmentally responsible behavior of nature-based tourists is limited. This study examines the relationship among the recreation experience, environmental attitude, biospheric value, and the general and site-specific environmentally responsible behavior of nature-based tourists in Taomi, Liuqiu Island, and Aowanda and Najenshan in Taiwan. A total of 1342 usable questionnaires were collected for this study. The empirical results indicate that the recreation experience influences biospheric value and environmental attitude; subsequently, it then indirectly influences the general and site-specific environmentally responsible behavior of nature-based tourists. Our theoretical behavioral model elucidates previously proposed but unexamined behavioral models among nature-based tourists, and it offers a theoretical framework for researchers, decision makers, managers, and tourists in the field of nature-based tourism. We conclude that when an individual participates in nature-based tourism as described here, these recreation experiences strengthen their environmental attitude and biospheric value, and consequently increase their engagement in both general and site-specific environmentally responsible behaviors.

Abstract:Urbanization is one of the great challenges of our time and unchecked haphazard urbanization is a serious threat both to the environment and social and economic balance. In order to meet global sustainability targets, rapid urban growth must be channelled into environmentally friendly, sustainable and liveable urban environments. Thus, this special issue focuses on sustainable urban design which plays a key role in creating these urban environments. The first paper “Review on the Development of a Sustainability Indicator System in Agenda 21 for Tourism in Mexico” aimed to diagnose the current situation of tourism in Mexico through the evaluation of four major themes: environment, socioeconomic environment, tourism and urban development. The authors introduced the progress of a sustainability indicator system and the implementation of sustainable indicators then analysed the results of the application of the sustainable development indicators which were promoted by the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) in eighty-four destinations in the period of 2002-2007, from the length and breadth of the country. The bestpositioned tourist destinations were categorized as Medium Cities. Paradoxically, coastal tourist destinations were in the middle. The worst conditions were found in tourist destinations in nature. The results show better performance indicators for urban development, while the higher pressure is in the environmental area. (Sui-Qui. et al., 2015) Urban renewal is one important government policy which can improve the urban environment and economic growth. So, the second paper “A Study on Promotion Mechanisms and the Future of Government-led Urban Renewal Projects from the Perspective of Land Ethics” aimed to explore Taiwan's urban renewal policy development process and mechanisms of the Government-led urban renewal projects. It references Aldo Leopold's land ethic theory which can be used to explore the power relations and land health problems. The authors analysed the relationship between urban renewal rights and discussed current beliefs and disadvantages of urban renewal mechanisms. Understanding the government-led urban renewal policies is needed to improve the social, economic and ecological issues. By "regenerating" the dilapidated region, the urban area is expected to regain its energy and sustainability. Abstract:This study explores the relationship between a for-profit leisure program and sustainability issues in the context of a hollow village in China. We studied what forms of relation between leisure and sustainability could be identified through the operation of ‘Mount Qi and the hermit master’ at a hollow village, and to what extent, ‘Mount Qi and the hermit master’ can be considered as a sustainable leisure program. Fieldwork and focus groups were used to collect data. Theoretically, the analyses adopt a comprehensive model of sustainability, which integrates the concepts of weak and strong sustainability, as well as considers the sustainability of human needs. Our findings demonstrate that the leisure program has contributed to a comprehensive sustainable development and helped to meet the villagers’ needs. This study also critically points out the uncertain aspects relating to the sustainability of human needs at the current stage of the program implementation.

Abstract:Sustainable tourist behavior is a rapidly growing field within sustainable tourism. This study contributes to this emerging body of knowledge through a systematic literature review combining bibliometric and qualitative analysis of 331 publications. Key themes in sustainable tourist behavior research, including intended and actual behaviors, were identified with scholarly debates in this field discussed critically. Sustainability topics widely studied in other disciplines have been overlooked from a tourist behavior perspective, including waste classification and recycling, as well as applications of sustainable design to the management of the visitor economy. Additionally, this analysis revealed imbalances in sustainable development practice and research related to the visitor economy and gaps in theory development. This study builds on these findings and discusses an agenda for future research in sustainable tourist behavior. The findings contribute to shaping the conceptualization of sustainable tourist behavior, recognizing its dynamic nature, providing an overview of theories and antecedents, and underscoring the significance of considering diverse factors in future research. They also suggest that decision‐makers in tourism should prioritize understanding tourist sustainable behavior through market segmentation, incorporate design and technology into sustainable initiatives, and align strategies with the specific needs and requirements of tourists for effective and sustainable tourism development.

Abstract:This article introduces the special issue "Leisure and older adults in Asia." Although the study of older adults' participation in leisure has gained traction over the last decade, there is need to consider in greater depth the central role that leisure activities may play in the construction of identities and lifestyles in later life. The collection of articles in this special issue contributes to the emerging literature on the intersection of leisure and aging by presenting diverse contexts and methodologies to build a comprehensive understanding of leisure participation among older adults in China, India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. They reveal a common thread highlighting the close relationship between leisure participation and various quantitative and qualitative markers of well-being and quality of life in old age, such as health, social participation, and sense of self. The papers also highlight the importance of leisure as a socio-cultural resource through which older adults can negotiate their experiences in later life. Through the different case studies and discussion, the special issue contributes to critical Asian perspective regarding the place of leisure within discourses of 'productive'/'successful'/'active' aging.

Abstract:This special issue focus on the trends, problems, solutions and experiences relating to development, marketing and sustainability in small cities. By comparison with large cities, small cities and towns have smaller populations supported by less extensive infrastructure. Nevertheless, they serve as administrative, commercial, religious, and cultural centers for their surrounding areas. Because of their smaller physical and population scales, and more limited social and environmental carrying capacities, it is important to identify how these destinations engage in tourism development activities and how the public sector and consumers determine their sustainability. In particular, this research note focuses on the development of small cities in the social media era. Examination of social media dissemination mechanisms contributes to the understanding of changes in the behavior patterns and the planning of real spaces in mid-sized urban destinations.

Abstract:The current study empirically examines an integrative model linking multiple types of touch points in tourism experience, hedonic well-being, eudaimonic well-being, revisit intention, and online word of mouth, in response to the calls to revitalize tourism and achieve sustainable development. The research relied on “Nong Jia Le,” an important representative survey on leisure tourism. The questionnaire was developed based on prior studies, then translated into Chinese and set up in an online survey system. In total, 316 respondents were ultimately gathered for analysis. Principal component analysis was used to test the reliability and validity of each construct, and a structural equation model was used to test the hypotheses. The findings show that tourism experiences derived from partner-owned, customer-owned, and social touch points positively affect perceived hedonic and eudaimonic well-being, while experiences derived from destination-owned touch points only positively influence hedonic well-being. In addition, both hedonic and eudaimonic well-being significantly affect consumers’ intention to revisit the destination and to spread word of mouth online. This study fills in a gap in leisure tourism literature by proposing the merits of touch points in tourism experience and placing importance on conceptions of eudaimonia. More importantly, the current research offers important social and economic considerations that can contribute to the sustainable growth of leisure tourism.

Abstract:No consensus has yet been formed on project development in lake-water conservancy on aspects such as lake quality, ecological environment, rural economy, social culture, leisure living environment and leisure aspirations due to the current lack of comprehensive discussion. This study mainly uses the case of Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan to verify the impact of lake-tourism optimisation and water-conservancy projects on the rural economy, water quality, ecology and sustainable development of tourism for local young people in the area around the lake. We employed open-sampling questionnaires and semistructured interviews to collect data and conducted multivariate analysis. The study investigated the hypothesis that optimising water-conservancy projects for lake tourism creates a stable leisure and tourism environment in rural areas, enhances visibility, and increases emotional exchanges and the preservation of historic sites. However, problems such as excessive tourism waste and a lack of public facilities negatively affect local young consumers' willingness to engage in tourism activities. Improving problems in the villages, ecology and natural environment surrounding lakes that are being conserved can increase young local individuals' willingness to engage in and share experiences of tourism activities. If the local government can improve the issues of protected villages, ecology and the natural environment around the lake, it can increase the willingness of local young people to participate in and share their experiences in tourism activities.

Abstract:Most governments, local organizations, tourism agents, and scholars have extensively promoted ecotourism in recent years. However, government policies have been ignored, public opinion has not been updated, the local tourism infrastructure is incomplete, and operational practices have been poor for a long time. This is because ecotourism has not made any empirical profits, and additionally, it has even incurred more practical costs, which have encouraged few tourism agents to execute and operate ecotourism correctly. The contributive findings of this study are the following: (1) Beyond the evaluated measurements of quantitative and qualitative analyses, the sustainable development of ecotourism essentially creates benefits for the local industry and the environment, and actively assists the industry in improving the business environment, in enhancing service quality, and in creating ecotourism benefits. (2) It is very apparent that the tourism offices of central and local governments, as well as related travel agents and local organizations, have to be trained with regard to the appropriate consumption of sightseeing products, with a consideration of productive yield and a critical focus on quality instead of quantity. Particular attention should also be given to local traveling capacity as well as support for regional development. The maintenance of the local cultural landscape or ecological integrity can directly offer tourists an unprecedented travel experience, which could encourage them to share their knowledge with others in society after traveling, and consequently promote the sustainable development of ecotourism. (3) The results point to the fact that the tourism offices of central and local governments, related travel agents, and local organizations require training in providing special assistance to local residents with regard to the conservation of natural resources. Special training must likewise be provided concerning environmental protection, allowing them to educate the tourists in terms of politely respecting local traditions, norms, and cultures while traveling, since these activities are directly related to the sustainable development of ecotourism. Predictably, beyond this research, these three contributive findings can directly become the research foundation of future works that intend to focus on the sustainability of global ecotourism.

Abstract:Leisure agriculture can meet the leisure needs of residents and promote farmers’ income, which is an important way to achieve rural revitalization. However, the unreasonable spatial patterns and weak competitiveness of leisure agriculture seriously restrict its sustainable development. This paper proposes a framework for optimizing leisure agriculture development, including spatial patterns analysis of leisure agriculture based on big data, quality analysis of leisure agriculture based on tourists’ perceptions, and strategies for optimizing leisure agriculture based on spatial patterns and tourists’ perceptions. Taking Wuhan city as an example, the results show that: 1) the main types of leisure agriculture are leisure farms, fishing, and picking gardens, showing an agglomerative distribution pattern; 2) considering tourists’ emotional perceptions, most comments are positive, and leisure farms should enhance the tourist experience; 3) tourists’ dissatisfaction mainly involves the environment, price, and travel, while product and service factors are relatively satisfactory; and 4) moderate agglomeration is beneficial to the quality of leisure agriculture, while excessive agglomeration has adverse effects. This study explores the development law of regional leisure agriculture, improves the relevant theoretical research system and methods, and provides decision-making references for promoting the development of leisure agriculture.

Abstract:From the perspective of satisfaction, physical and mental health, and re-travel, this study explored whether the development of religious and cultural tourism could construct a sustainable and friendly life and leisure environment for the elderly to promote physical and mental health. This research adopted a mixed method, collected 700 questionnaires, used SPSS 22.0 statistical software, and analyzed basic statistics, t-test, and PPMCC test. Then, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews, collected the opinions of six interviewees, and finally analyzed with multiple checks Law discussion. The results found that people of different genders and stakeholders had different opinions about DIY activities on leisure satisfaction, featured itineraries, relaxation areas, signs and instructions, community association and service center services, historical landmarks, and public transportation. They found people’s life satisfaction in physical and mental health was increased, their headaches or pressures on the top of their heads were relieved, backache problems were reduced, and they were no longer anxious and lost tempers. They had a greater willingness to revisit some places and share experiences. This study found significant differences among these topics (p < 0.01). Women, residents, and tourists had different opinions. In addition, although the natural environment landscape and feelings have the greatest influence, the better the physical and mental health was improved, the better the willingness to travel. However, the more perfect the local construction and development, the less favorable to attract people to engage in leisure activities or tourism consumption.

Abstract:The concept of alternative tourism mainly focuses on reducing the impacts to the tourism development on the ecological environment and driving the tourism industry into the direction of the sustainable development through different types of tourism mode (activities), such as agricultural tourism, rural tourism, industry tourism, and cultural tourism, etc. However, fewer studies discuss the feasibility of leisure agriculture as a possible tool of alternative tourism. The objectives of this study is to verify the advantages of alternative tourism and to assess the feasibility of leisure agriculture as a possible tool of alternative tourism based on literature review. Findings show that the development of leisure agriculture will have positive and negative impacts on the rural environment, economy and social culture. In general, the positive benefits outweigh the negative ones. Therefore, leisure agriculture is one of the feasible tools to achieve the purpose of developing alternative tourism, and the development of leisure agriculture is indeed one of the feasible alternatives to tourism.
