Abstract:River reconstruction alters hydrodynamics and fish habitats.Hydrodynamic modelling of river restoration strategies coupled with habitat modelling can be used to evaluate fish habitat suitability.Of four riverbank restoration strategies evaluated, eco-hydraulic modelling indicates that installing spur dikes on a single riverbank has a negligible effect on habitat suitability for Chinese Sailfin Suckers.In contrast, installing spur dikes along both riverbanks would have significant negative effects on fish habitat.Studies indicate that the number of freshwater fish species has declined sharply since the start of this century and many species have become endangered (Albanese et al. 2009, Mota et al. 2016).
