Abstract:By virtue of their licenses, local television stations in the United States must serve in the public interest of their communities. Because many stations' ownership is by corporate conglomerates, however, that public interest is often considered secondary to revenue maximization. Labor is exploited to meet this goal, with technology deployed in newsrooms to consolidate job descriptions, replace human labor with computers, and add sales-ready content platforms, while drawing as much surplus value from workers as possible. This study sought out newsroom employees, including rarely-studied behind the scenes personnel, in the 25 largest metropolitan areas of the country to find out how this utilization of technology affected their journalistic work routines and output. Their responses via online surveys and semi-structured interviews highlight the challenges of juggling ever-increasing tech-enabled job responsibilities while still providing quality reports for their audiences in a corporate ownership environment focused on profits.

Abstract:The article deals with the development of German Communication Studies since the mid-1990s until today. Its focus lays on the discussions on new media and their consequences for the redefinition of the scientific field as “New Communication Science”. Different to the scientific tradition of the ‘old’ German “Publizistikwissen-schaft” with the main focus on mass media and public communication, the ‘new’ field is characterized by a broader view on communication and media in reaction to the interweaving of interpersonal and media communication in the digital age. Ac-cording to the idea of science as social process, this paper asks how the new orien-tation gained acceptance in the scientific community and reconstructs the scholarly debates on this path. These include external triggers of debate such as the Silber-mann controversy that resulted in the appointment of an internal self-conception committee and the very first paper on the profile of the discipline in Germany. The reconstructed debates in this paper outline the development of two strands within the scientific community: traditionalists and visionaries. Although the intensity of discussions on the disciplinary identity of German Communication Studies abated since the adoption of the second self-conception paper that embraced the diversity of the discipline, debates on the extension versus limitation of the range of research subjects in the course of changing media environments and societies prevail until present day.

Abstract:In this essay I intend to tell a story of media studies and mass communication research as a field, based on the work of the late Denis McQuail – and that of editing the new edition of his seminal handbook McQuail’s Media and Mass Communication Theory (McQuail & Deuze, 2020). Using McQuail’s historical storytelling method, I specifically look at the challenge for the field in the context of a global pandemic alongside an infodemic, at a time when the whole world faces the consequences of recurrent lockdowns, social distancing measures, and institutional pressures to stay at home. Media studies and (mass) communication research, while having a distinct narrative, as a field has only just begun to articulate its relevance to society – we have only just started to tell our story. Using developments in understanding the self as a research tool, the implementation of integrative research designs, and calls for engaged and public scholarship, the paper outlines challenges and opportunities for what we can do with our field.

Abstract:This study aims to assess technological determinism in relation to interdisciplinarity in journalism studies. Based on a scoping review of articles published during the last decade in three influential scientific journals within the journalism studies field, Digital Journalism , New Media & Society and Journalism, the study analyzes manifestations of technological determinism and interdisciplinarity. The review includes in its analysis 127 articles published between 2012 and 2022 that mention "technological determinism" and "journalism." Furthermore, the study connects these manifestations to the biographies of the authors in terms of their PhD dissertation discipline. The study raises two concerns. First, the analysis of the manifestation of technological determinism indicates that technological determinism is mainly thought of and discussed by the scholarly community from a functionalist viewpoint. It seems like scholarship that has added nuances and further developed the theory has been disregarded or perhaps is not even known. Second, interdisciplinary research on technology becomes difficult since the essence of technological determinism is considered a no-go zone in journalism studies. However, for the field of journalism studies to grow even stronger a revised delimitation is necessary. To reduce the stigma around technological determinism as a concept, the limitation should not exclude the use of the concept, but encourage a more nuanced assessment of it to contribute to the discussion of the role of technology in journalism.

Abstract:Journal of Communication Inquiry, Ahead of Print. This essay complicates interpretations of digital architectures in online journalism production in terms of journalistic interlopers and intralopers during an age of increased influence of technologists on online news development. While much normative scholarship revolves around social media, metrics, algorithms, artificial intelligence, VR, and other forms of digital innovation applied to journalism, the essay argues that such work must not focus merely on the actions of today's tech-savvy journalism but should interrogate social and cultural relationships at the center of journalistic production so not to as become distracted away from the embedded practices of ideological incorporation that shapes media messages and reproduces inequalities through what and how journalism covers. In the future, as we approach a notion of the Metaverse, scholars must interrogate the long-standing embedding of elite ideologies into the news as journalists collaborate with technologists (or as journalists become technologists), interact (and re-interact) with elite ideologies at accelerating rates in networked societies, and move into new digital realms we have not yet imagined.

Abstract:Journalism has enjoyed a rich and relatively stable history of professionalization. Scholars coming from a variety of disciplines have theorized this history, forming a consistent body of knowledge codified in national and international handbooks and canonical readers. However, recent work and analysis suggest that the supposed core of journalism and the assumed consistency of the inner workings of news organizations are problematic starting points for journalism studies. In this article, we challenge the consensual (self-)presentation of journalism – in terms of its occupational ideology, its professional culture, and its sedimentation in routines and organizational structures (cf. the newsroom) in the context of its reconfiguration as a post-industrial, entrepreneurial, and atypical way of working and of being at work. We outline a way beyond individualist or institutional approaches to do justice to the current complex transformation of the profession. We propose a framework to bring together these approaches in a dialectic attempt to move through and beyond journalism as it has traditionally been conceptualized and practiced, allowing for a broader definition and understanding of the myriad of practices that make up journalism.

Abstract:Representation and diversity are salient issues in the democratic discourse worldwide and by extension within the field of journalism studies. With the field's recent introspection into the role of gender and race in academia came a need for empirical data, supporting the efforts of scholars working on improving journalism study's diversity, both in terms of gender and affiliation nationality. The current study aims at adding to this ongoing research by investigating the diversity among the authors of three major journalism related journals from 2000–2020, by employing automated content analysis and network analysis on a corpus of 2,751 original research articles. The results illustrate how authors' characteristics impact a fields output. We find historic and ongoing imbalances authors of different genders and affiliation nationality that have an impact on the field's knowledge production.

Abstract:News has traditionally served as a common ground, enabling people to connect to others and engage with the public issues they encounter in everyday life. This article revisits these theoretical debates about mediated public connection within the context of a digitalized news media landscape. While academic discussions surrounding these shifts are often explored in terms of normative ideals ascribed to political systems or civic cultures, we propose to reposition the debate by departing from the practices and preferences of the news user instead. Therefore, we deconstruct and translate the concept of public connection into four dimensions that emphasize people’s lived experiences: inclusiveness, engagement, relevance, and constructiveness. Situating these in an everyday life framework, this article advances a user-based perspective that considers the role of news for people in digital societies. Accordingly, it offers a conceptual framework that aims to encapsulate how news becomes meaningful, rather than why it should be.

Abstract:This essay outlines a program for updating German media studies by reformatting, repartitioning, and potentially rebooting German media theory. As a temporary placeholder, German media studies 2.0 describes current transatlantic research committed to fixing bugs and patching vulnerabilities that emerged from historical encounters between media and critique, ideology and epistemology, and the Frankfurt School and the Kittler Network. To update German media studies in a critical mode, we need to keep defining our concepts and delimiting our disciplines, accounting for the effects of media change on our research methods, and negotiating our field’s complex relations to culture, history, and politics.
Defining and Measuring News Media Quality: Comparing the Content Perspective and the Audience Perspective

Abstract:High-quality news is important, not only for its own sake but also for its political implications. However, defining, operationalizing, and measuring news media quality is difficult, because evaluative criteria depend upon beliefs about the ideal society, which are inherently contested. This conceptual and methodological paper outlines important considerations for defining news media quality before developing and applying a multimethod approach to measure it. We refer to Giddens' notion of double hermeneutics, which reveals that the ways social scientists understand constructs inevitably interact with the meanings of these constructs shared by people in society. Reflecting the two-way relationship between society and social sciences enables us to recognize news media quality as a dynamic, contingent, and contested construct and, at the same time, to reason our understanding of news media quality, which we derive from Habermas' ideal of deliberative democracy. Moreover, we investigate the Swiss media system to showcase our measurement approach in a repeated data collection from 2017 to 2020. We assess the content quality of fifty news media outlets using four criteria derived from the deliberative ideal ( N = 20,931 and 18,559 news articles and broadcasting items, respectively) and compare the results with those from two representative online surveys ( N = 2,169 and 2,159 respondents). The high correlations between both methods show that a deliberative understanding of news media quality is anchored in Swiss society and shared by audiences. This paper shall serve as a showcase to reflect and measure news media quality across other countries and media systems.

Abstract:This article explores how educational qualifications, age, gender and regional context affect journalism educators’ perceptions of journalism’s normative roles and the future needs of journalism students. It draws on Australian and New Zealand/Aotearoan responses to the 2021 World Journalism Education Council (WJEC) Survey Journalistic Roles, Values and Qualifications in the 21st Century: How Journalism Educators Across the Globe View the Future of a Profession in Transition . It shows that holding a Ph.D. diminishes support for traditional observer and disseminator roles and predicts support for the mobilizer role. Age also predicts role perception; it diminishes support for the disseminator and mobilizer roles for both the current position of journalists and journalists in the next ten years. These age and education effects are independent of each other. The findings point to the need for more detailed research on the effects of further education on journalism teachers’ professional conceptions and teaching strategy.

Abstract:This study critically reviews scholarly debates on state aid for independent, professional news journalism in the public interest, its funding models and principles, the market failure paradigm, and policy efficacy. State aid is handed out by government agencies which believe that their support can help independent, professional journalism thrive in the digital, mobile, and platform-dominated future. Government support mainly comes as direct financial grants or indirect tax offsets. It aims at engendering economic opportunity and prosperity, while safeguarding journalistic independence and quality of output. Ideally, this shall foster the production, distribution and consumption of original and high-quality news in the public interest, which, in turn, shall keep people informed, facilitate public debate, and hold power to account. Still, this study finds arguments that government funding models for independent journalism in the public interest are limited by several critical challenges that endanger their principles, do not avert failure in the news media market and prevent effective policy governance. These deficits may even be exacerbated in the digital era.

The Struggle for News Value in the Digital Era

Abstract:News has long been a contested concept but in the digital era it has become increasingly fractured and multidimensional. This discursive article explores some of the ways in which the news has been disrupted by technological and economic tensions and argues that the social value of news is worth articulating and, where necessary, struggling for. News values have never been universal or unproblematic, and the tension between commercial and social ways of valuing news is intensified today. News values are not fixed and must be open to critique as to how they are meeting citizens’ needs. Societally useful news may be at risk of being marginalized as news organizations struggle to survive, but it is not inevitable that disruption and digitization should undermine journalistic ethics and the social value of news. In arguing that scholars ought to approach news more holistically, to defend it as well as critique it, the article attempts to synthesize what typically appears as discrete approaches to studying news. The article concludes that, if the social value of news is not to suffer further diminution, there is a need to view news through a lens of struggle; a struggle in which journalists, audiences, scholars and, indeed, all citizens have a part to play.

Abstract:This article is a brief review and critique of the main scholarly approaches to thinking about popular forms of news in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, particularly in regards to broadcast television. Rather than advocating the merits of either popular or `hard' news, it discusses the possibility of finding (or revisiting) a critical approach to popular news and current affairs 1 journalism that charts a suitable middle ground: one that can accommodate the emergence of popular informational programs (e.g. The Awful Truth, The Daily Show) and one that moves away from the sometimes too simplistic binary discourses that have tended to become characteristic of recent debates over `tabloidization'.

Abstract:Editorial technologists, such as developers, designers, or data specialists represent novel interdisciplinary computational journalism positions in newsrooms. Drawing on field theory, this explorative study evaluates the character of the professional community of editorial technologists by analyzing their discussions in the peer conference “SRCCON” over four years (2016–2019). Findings indicate that editorial technologists are united by the goal to improve journalism. They critically reflect on their roles and strive to augment their agency in the field through normalizing their computational skills, accumulating social capital, e.g., by building enduring relationships in newsrooms, and gaining symbolic capital. Instead of pressing to enforce technological adoption at all costs, editorial technologists acknowledge their responsibility towards the editorial office, news organizations, audiences, and society at large. These responsibilities form the core of their doxa, which is why we conceive of editorial technologists as a community of accountable engineers of sociotechnical change in journalism. Editorial technologists’ collective professional imagination aims at overcoming the inert processes, hegemonic structures, and restrictive culture of journalism.

Abstract:The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism has sparked complex ethical debates, particularly with the rise of generative AI systems. By now, AI permeates the entire news cycle, from information gathering to news dissemination, raising questions revolving around issues such as transparency, accountability, responsibility, bias, and diversity. Previous research showed that news organizations have slowly approached and adapted to ethical concerns regarding the use of AI, developing critical stances mainly due to rising AI power, growing audience skepticism, and mounting tensions within the industry between news publishers’ strategies and journalists’ anxieties. Consequently, ethical guidelines have started to emerge in news organizations, but their practical application remains challenging and under-studied, not only due to the opacity of AI algorithms, but also due to the difficulties of “embedding” journalistic values into AI systems. In the light of an intensifying discourse about ethical concerns in the news industry and growing efforts by governments and institutions such as the European Union to strengthen AI governance, journalism studies have started to explore the issue as well. However, research on AI ethics is still in its infancy, with significant gaps in understanding the practical enforcement of ethical guidelines within newsrooms, in particular when it comes to the design of AI systems. This essay critically discusses the way journalism (studies) approach ethical issues related to the use and the design of AI systems, given that the responsible use and design of AI systems in journalism is crucial given its integral role for democracy and society.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of news communication innovation in the financial media environment, meet the update needs of news communication in the financial media environment, and make up for the shortcomings of the application of emerging media technologies in news communication, it is necessary to improve people's attention to news communication. With the advent of the era of integrated media, the application of emerging media technologies such as data news and robot news to the field of news communication has shaken the status of TV news in communication and affected its news production mode, but it will not replace traditional news, become the "forced mechanism" of traditional news production reform, and boost its reform and promotion. According to the social survey of 100 people, it is found that 88 people believe that under this competition mode, the development and challenges of TV livelihood news coexist. As Yu Guoming, a professor at Renmin University of China, said, "people's livelihood news is in the process of becoming a butterfly." TV people's livelihood news practitioners should reshape their news ideals and establish Internet thinking to face the ever-changing communication ecological environment. From channel expansion to content integration, from serving users to public opinion guidance, we are committed to building a new mainstream media with the guidance of traditional TV media, content advantages, equal communication, real-time interaction, and distinctive personality of new media. Only in this way can we obtain enough voice and influence in the highly competitive media environment.
