Abstract:Light beam scanning using a dispersive element and wavelength tuning is coupled with fiber-optic interferometry to realize a new surface measurement instrument. The instrument is capable of measuring nanoscale surface structures and form deviations. It features active vibration compensation and a small optical probe size that may be placed remotely from the main apparatus. Active vibration compensation is provided by the multiplexing of two interferometers with near common paths. Closed loop control of a mirror mounted on a piezoelectric transducer is used to keep the path length stable. Experiments were carried out to deduce the effectiveness of the vibration compensation and the ability to carry out a real measurement in the face of large environmental disturbance.

Abstract:Frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) 3D imaging system may suffer from time-varying vibrations which will affect the accuracy of ranging and imaging of a target. The system uses only a single-period FMCW LiDAR signal to measure the range of each spot; however, traditional methods may not work well to compensate for the time-varying vibrations in a single period because they generally assume the vibration velocity is constant. To solve this problem, we propose a time-varying vibration compensation method based on segmented interference. We first derive the impact of time-varying vibrations on the range measurement of the FMCW LiDAR system, in which we divide the time-varying vibration errors into primary errors caused by the vibrations with a constant velocity and quadratic errors. Second, we estimate the coefficients of quadratic vibration errors by using a segmented interference method and build a quadratic compensation filter to eliminate the quadratic vibration errors from the original signals. Finally, we use the symmetrical relations of signals in a triangular FMCW period to estimate the vibration velocity and establish a primary compensation filter to eliminate the primary vibration errors. Numerical tests verify the applicability of this method in eliminating time-varying vibration errors with only a one-period triangular FMCW signal and its superiority over traditional methods.

Abstract:Compared with microwave synthetic aperture radar (SAR), terahertz SAR (THz-SAR) is easier to achieve ultrahigh-resolution image due to its higher frequency and shorter wavelength. However, higher carrier frequency makes THz-SAR image quality very sensitive to high-frequency vibration error of motion platform. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel high-frequency vibration error estimation and compensation algorithm for THz-SAR imaging based on local fractional Fourier transform (LFrFT). Firstly, the high-frequency vibration error of the motion platform is modeled as a simple harmonic motion and THz-SAR echo signal received in each range pixel can be considered as a sinusoidal frequency modulation (SFM) signal. A novel algorithm for the parameter estimation of the SFM signal based on LFrFT is proposed. The instantaneous chirp rate of the SFM signal is estimated by determining the matched order of LFrFT in a sliding small-time window and the vibration acceleration is obtained. Hence, the vibration frequency can be estimated by the spectrum analysis of estimated vibration acceleration. With the estimated vibration acceleration and vibration frequency, the SFM signal is reconstructed. Then, the corresponding THz-SAR imaging algorithm is proposed to estimate and compensate the phase error caused by the high-frequency vibration error of the motion platform and realize high-frequency vibration error estimation and compensation for THz-SAR imaging. Finally, the effectiveness of the novel algorithm proposed in this paper is demonstrated by simulation results.

Abstract:Frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) Lidar inevitably suffers from vibration and nonlinear frequency modulation, which influences the ranging and imaging results. In this paper, we analyze the impact of vibration error coupled with nonlinearity error on ranging for FMCW Lidar, and propose a purely theoretical approach that simultaneously compensates for time-varying vibration and nonlinearity in one-period triangular FMCW (T-FMCW) signals. We first extract the localized characteristics of dechirp signals in time-frequency domain by using a second-order synchro-squeezing transform (second-order SST), and establish an instantaneous ranging model based on second-order SST which can characterize the local distributions of time-varying errors. Second, we estimate the nonlinearity error by using time-frequency information of an auxiliary channel and then preliminarily eliminate the error from the instantaneous measurement range. Finally, we construct a particle filtering (PF) model for T-FMCW using the instantaneous ranging model to compensate for the time-varying vibration error and the residual nonlinearity error, and calculate the range of target by using triangular symmetry relations of T-FMCW. Experimental tests prove that the proposed method can accurately estimate the range of target by compensating for the time-varying vibration and the nonlinearity errors simultaneously in one-period T-FMCW signal.

Abstract:A surface topography measurement system with vibration compensation was developed herein based on the white-light wavelength scanning interferometry .Both of phase extraction algo-rithm and phase unwrapping algorithm was analyzed for the white-light wavelength scanning interfer-ometry .They could be used to modify the nonlinear errors during the acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) swept at low rate .The hardware control module was designed for the vibration compensa-tion .In order to verify the designed system ,both of 3-dimensional(3D) surface topography and the roughness parameter of the standard sample grinding at level 12 were evaluated under different vibra-tion environments .The results demonstrate that the measurement results with low frequency vibra-tion are about two times than those of without vibration .After opening the system vibration feedback , the results approache to the maximum allowed value .It shows that the proposed method can eliminate the vibration effect in a certain extent .Compared with two dimensional(2D) surface evaluation re-sults ,3D surface evaluation can express the measured topography surface comprehensively .

Abstract:Frequency-modulated continuous wave synthetic aperture ladar (FMCW-SAL) is an important remote sensing observation method. Sliding spotlight FMCW-SAL can obtain high resolution and wide observation coverage in azimuth simultaneously. This work models and simulates sliding spotlight FMCW-SAL signal. FMCW-SAL beam scanning leads to spectrum aliasing in the azimuth direction, and the linear and second-order position offset errors are introduced in the range direction. Compared with sliding spotlight FMCW synthetic aperture radar (SAR), the linear position offset error is more serious and must be corrected. However, there is no linear position offset correction in previous research studies in sliding spotlight FMCW-SAR. An improved sliding spotlight FMCW-SAL imaging algorithm is proposed for the above problems here. This algorithm includes two new phase compensation factors, which can remove Doppler ambiguity and correct first-order, second-order position offset errors in range simultaneously. Simulation experiments verify the effectiveness of the signal model and the imaging algorithm.

Abstract:Compared to conventional radars, arc array synthetic aperture radar (SAR) enables wide-area observation under ideal conditions. However, helicopters carrying arc array SAR platforms are generally smaller in size and more sensitive to vibration, which has a greater impact on the imaging quality. In this paper, the vibration error of the arc array SAR platform is investigated, and a vibration error model of the arc array SAR platform is established. Based on the study of the vibration error model, a vibration phase estimation and compensation algorithm based on the delayed conjugate multiplication method is proposed. In the first step, distance pulse pressure processing is performed on the echo signal. In the second step, the pulse pressure signals and their delays in the same distance unit are subjected to conjugate multiplication, and the phase of the signal after conjugate multiplication is extracted. The extracted phase is then amplitude- and phase-compensated to estimate the vibration phase. In the third step, the vibration phase is compensated in the azimuthal direction of the distance pulse pressure signal, and the pairwise echo is eliminated, which completes the compensation of the airborne arc array SAR vibration platform.

Abstract:In this paper, a vibration estimation method for terahertz synthetic aperture radar (THz SAR) is proposed based on the sinusoidal frequency modulation Fourier transform (SFMFT), which directly operates on the phase term of the signal. Small high frequency vibration of the platform will introduce nonlinear phase modulation in radar echoes. To improve the potential of the method for vibration with multiple vibration frequencies, SFMFT is used to extract the vibration spectrum of the platform. When the vibration amplitude exceeds a certain threshold, the phase ambiguity will occur. To improve the range of estimable vibration amplitude, a method based on the conjugate cancellation of the phase errors with sub-band decomposition is introduced to reconstruct a signal with a longer equivalent wavelength. Then the accurate phase errors caused by the platform vibration can be estimated by performing SFMFT on the composite signal. The simulations prove that the proposed method is superior to the time-frequency (TF) analysis methods and can improve the range of estimable vibration amplitude.

Abstract:Effective vibration measurement is crucial for monitoring the health of mechanical systems and preventing failure. Current methodologies face limitations such as mass loading, signal attenuation, and environmental sensitivity. This paper presents a novel noncontact laser triangulation vibrometer (LTV) based on the laser triangulation principle for vibration measurements. The LTV offers rapid sampling, high precision, compact design, and easy integration, addressing the challenges faced by existing techniques. Validation experiments, including low-frequency tests on a piezoelectric actuator and high-frequency tests on a speaker diaphragm, demonstrate the LTV's high accuracy, repeatability, and adaptability in vibration measurement applications. Results show that the LTV can measure vibrations up to 45 kHz, and can achieve a low residual nonlinearity of ± 0.0121% F.S. and a low noise RMS of 0.549 μm. The proposed LTV provides a high-performance alternative to traditional vibration measurement methods for monitoring machinery health, diagnosing faults, and reducing maintenance costs.

Abstract:As the demand for ocean observations increases, the quality requirements for sonar imaging are becoming increasingly exacting. The temporal synthesis strategy provides the acoustic-lens-based forward-looking sonar (ALFLS) with ultrahigh resolution but also causes the imaging content to be distorted when the sonar is moving at a high speed. This limits the application of sonar to low-speed or stationary underwater inspections. In this article, we formally define this distortion effect for the first time as an acoustic rolling shutter (ARS) effect and use implicit neural representation to naturally recover and represent acoustic images in a rectangular coordinate system for visual representation or subsequent computer tasks, e.g., image registration and image mosaicing. The method is self-supervised and involves only a single image, without the need for any external data input, e.g., from a global positioning system and a Doppler velocity log. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed method using experimental field data and reveal the potential application of this technique to underwater robot vision.

Abstract:Inverse synthetic aperture ladar (ISAL) can perform high-resolution imaging for satellites. However, due to the short wavelength of the laser, satellite microvibration will introduce space-variant vibration phase error (SVVPE) and space-invariant vibration phase error (SIVVPE) in the echoes, which seriously blurs the ISAL image. In this article, we propose a noise-robust vibration phase compensation algorithm to accurately estimate and correct these two types of vibration phase errors by frequency descent (FD) minimum entropy optimization. First, considering the characteristics of the microvibration of satellites, we establish a novel phase error model based on the Fourier series theory, which only contains low-frequency vibration components. The estimation of the phase errors is then translated into the estimation of the model's Fourier coefficients, which can be achieved by a multidimensional minimum entropy optimization. After that, an FD method is proposed to transform the multidimensional optimization into a group of 2-D optimizations so that the proposed algorithm can achieve monotonic iterative convergence. In addition, we introduce a solution space adaptive reduction operation to reduce the computational burden when solving the 2-D minimum entropy optimizations by the genetic algorithm (GA) to obtain the global optimal solution. Finally, experiments based on the simulated data and the real measured data confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Compared with the traditional methods, the proposed algorithm achieves higher phase error estimation accuracy and better image quality.

Abstract:High-frequency vibration of motion platform leads to paired echo for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, especially in terahertz band due to its shorter wave length. Different from most existing parameters estimation methods only considering single component high-frequency vibration, in this paper a novel method considering multi-components vibration model is proposed based on fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) with combination of quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) and random sample consensus (RANSAC). Based on the model establishment of high-frequency vibration error in the echo, its instantaneous chirp rate (ICR) is firstly estimated by FrFT in sliding sub-aperture, followed which the vibration parameters are coarsely obtained through spectrum analysis and least square (LS) regression. To further refine the parameters estimates, QML is developed for compensating the deviation both caused by the frequency spectrum leakage and the error propagation effects by one-dimensional search over the vibration frequency. Meanwhile, RANSAC is adopted for avoiding the outlier of the ICR estimates in LS regression, especially at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Thus, the refinement strategy based on the combination of QML and RANSAC is developed, whose utilization improves the estimation accuracy of vibration parameters. Finally, the paired echo in terahertz SAR (THz-SAR) imaging is effectively suppressed by the proposed method, and the high-quality THz-SAR imaging results are achieved. Both simulations of single component and multi-components high-frequency vibration are used to verify the validity of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the proposed method has higher estimation accuracy even at low SNR.

Abstract:Frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) laser radar (Ladar) is a new radar system suitable for long-range detection and high-resolution imaging. However, the transmitted signal inevitably suffers from nonlinear frequency modulation errors which reduce the quality of Ladar imaging. We propose a nonlinear phase estimation and compensation method based on synchrosqueezing wavelet transform (SST). We first use SST to synchrosqueeze the dechirp signal containing a reference range in time–frequency domain and obtain the time–frequency information of the reference dechirp signal. As SST could aggregate the time–frequency distribution of noise, the proposed method is effective even in a noisy environment. A nonlinearity model in time–frequency domain is then built to estimate the nonlinear phase of the transmitted signals by using the time–frequency information of the reference dechirp signal. For the case of long-range detection, we adopt a residual video phase filtering to convert the nonlinear phase of the dechirp signal to range-independent phase errors. Finally, the nonlinearity of the dechirp signal is compensated using the estimated nonlinear phase of the transmitted signals. The experimental and real data tests show that the proposed method effectively improves the resolution of long-range Ladar imaging by compensating for the nonlinearity of the dechirp signal. Its advantage is the effectiveness for noisy and multicomponent FMCW Ladar signals.

Abstract:Frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) synthetic aperture ladar (SAL) system can support the generation and processing of large bandwidth signals, which has strong capabilities in target detection, description, and identification. However, frequency modulation nonlinearity of the transmitted signal has become a bottleneck problem that restricts the high-resolution ranging of FMCW SAL. This letter establishes an echo model with nonlinearity and proposes a nonlinear phase estimation and compensation method based on Wigner–Ville distribution (WVD) with gradient rotation enhancement. First, we establish the nonlinearity model of the internal calibration signal in the time–frequency (TF) domain and use WVD to calculate the TF distribution (TFD). Second, the TFD is enhanced by rotating gradient vector, which can also eliminate noises and false components in the TFD. Then, the nonlinear phase of the transmitted signal is estimated by establishing a nonlinearity model in the TF domain. Finally, the residual video phase (RVP) filtering is introduced to eliminate the range-dependent nonlinearity and achieve nonlinearity correction of echoes at any range. Experiments and real data tests show that the method proposed in this letter can accurately estimate and correct the nonlinearity of the dechirp signal, which effectively improves the range resolution of FMCW SAL.

Simultaneous two-dimensional velocity and distance measurements based on laser triangulation

Abstract:Laser triangulation sensors are widely used in industry for surface inspection due to simple setup, micron precision and low cost. Conventional laser triangulation methods only enable axial distance measurement limiting further applications, and their lateral resolution is limited by surface microstructure. For overcoming these issues, based on the geometric optics we propose novel theoretical models and methods to achieve lateral velocity measurement. Moreover, a novel axial distance measurement method using edge detection is presented, which can increase the lateral resolution by the order of one magnitude. The performance of the proposed methods are validated through simultaneous orthogonal velocity and distance measurements on a moving established metal specimen, showing the relative error and relative uncertainty can reach 10^{-4}. The versatility of this multi degree of freedom measurement method paves the way for its broad application across all laser triangulation systems. Therefore, this simultaneous two-dimensional velocity and distance sensing approach can propel advancements in dynamic behavior discipline, including but not limited to motion mechanology and fluid mechanics.

Abstract:In response to the application requirement of wide-range high-resolution imaging of non-cooperative moving real targets by inverse synthetic-aperture ladar (ISAL), experiments were conducted on the depolarization effect of target materials, and the polarization selection of ISAL receiving and transmitting channels was discussed. Considering the impact of target depolarization and the demand for along-track interferometry, combined with beam-broaden and high-gain amplifiers, an ISAL system design method that can stably image multiple non-cooperative real targets has been proposed. Under the condition of broadening the transmitting and receiving beams to 3° in the elevation direction for non-cooperative moving vehicles, echo data with a duration of 1 s is obtained. The spatial correlation algorithm combined with along-track interferometry is used to estimate the vibration phase error. The sub-aperture Range-Doppler algorithm is used for imaging. The ISAL imaging results of the moving vehicle validated the high-resolution imaging ability of ISAL and its potential for stable imaging of non-cooperative moving real targets.

Abstract:In this article, a high-frequency motion error compensation algorithm for mini-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) system is proposed. Compared with the traditional SAR system platform, the mini-UAV is more vulnerable to interference from the external environment. Thus, the motion error of mini-UAV-based BiSAR systems always contains both low- and high-frequency components. Meanwhile, the independent transmitter and receiver sources would introduce more than one high-frequency motion error component, and the variance of the high-frequency motion error also needs to be considered. This article first establishes a high-frequency motion error model and the corresponding Doppler phase signal for the mini-UAV-based BiSAR system. Then, multiple forms and multiple components errors are separated and estimated on the azimuth phase. Next, the complex spatial variance is accurately modeled and compensated by estimating the platforms’ motion errors. It is suggested from the simulation and experimental results that the proposed algorithm can compensate for the motion error with complex forms under the mini-UAV-based BiSAR system condition.

Abstract:Airborne terahertz video synthetic aperture radar (THz-ViSAR) exhibits excellent superiorities in dynamic situation awareness and moving target detection. However, limited by the recording precision of the inertial navigation system (INS) or global positioning system (GPS), data-driven motion compensation (MOCO) methods are challenging to eliminate motion errors for the THz band. In particular, platform vibrations that are previously negligible in the microwave band become nonnegligible, drastically degrading the focusing performance. To conquer the aforementioned problems, this article proposes an echo-driven robust MOCO framework suited for THz-ViSAR. First, the airborne motion error model (MED) is rederived and the corresponding effects are analyzed in detail. Based on the derived MED, two parts are required to estimate from the echo: radial errors and vibration errors. Thus, a forward estimation of candidate signal of interests (SoI) is proposed based on local peaks of the average range profile and the prominence. For each candidate, radial and vibration errors are estimated from the unwrapped phase of the SoI via the polynomial and multicomponent sinusoidal fitting in turn. Finally, MOCO functions are constructed and evaluated based on the image entropy and image contrast, which determines the optimal SoI. Airborne field experiments are carried out to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:Thermal environment fluctuations introduce the attitude low-frequency error (ALFE) related to the orbital period. This causes the geometric positioning accuracy of visible and infrared multispectral sensor (VIMS) imagery of GaoFen-5B (GF-5B) satellite to vary from tens of meters to hundreds of meters. In this letter, a compensation method for ALFE is proposed based on the temporal and spatial characteristics. By considering the spatial characteristics of low-frequency error (LFE) in different regions, the models of internal and external LFE compensation were established using the segmented Fourier series model (SM) and the parameter of latitude. The sequential calibration and compensation method with different time intervals was proposed to address the temporal drift of LFE. Experimental results demonstrated that the internal and external LFE compensation improves geometric positioning accuracy of VIMS imagery from 6.927 to 2.428 pixels and from 3.045 to 1.438 pixels, respectively. The proposed method ensures the stability and consistency of geometric positioning accuracy of VIMS imagery across different time periods and regions.
