Abstract:I present a microscopic theory I proposed recently to describe high-T_c superconductivity in cuprates. I show that coherent pairing states consisting of extended singlet Cooper pairs and triplet $\pi$ pairs can manifest both the Mott insulating antiferromagnetic order and the d-wave superconducting order. From this configuration of coherent pairing states, I can describe both the single electron properties and the low energy collective excitations in high T_c superconductivity in the same framework. The quasiparticle can be derived directly with respect to the coherent pairing states. While, the low-lying quantum fluctuations associated with spin-wave and charge excitation can be investigated from the path integral of the coherent pairing states.

Abstract:We deal with a model for high-temperature superconductivity which maintains that in cuprates electrons running in the copper oxide layers, found in lattice of these materials, form spin-singlet bonds with electrons running in the neighbouring layers. This model reutilizes the BCS scheme, but with the essential difference that the electron pairs are characterized by equal, rather than opposite, momenta as in Cooper pairs. In the present paper, we consider the electron pair formation and a peculiar canonical transformation analogous to the transformation once applied to the theory of pairing correlations in nuclear matter. It is shown that the quasi-particle energy spectrum remains that of the BCS theory, including the linear relationship between forbidden energy gap and critical temperature. The model is also applied to superconductivity of some copperless perovskites of mixed stoichiometry, whose features are of special worth in understanding the mechanism of the phenomenon. The possibility of enhancing critical temperature in cuprates by inserting monovalent ions into the lattice is considered.

Abstract:A profound problem in modern condensed matter physics is discovering and understanding the nature of fluctuations and their coupling to fermions in cuprates, which lead to high-temperature superconductivity and the invariably associated strange metal state. We report the quantitative determination of normal and pairing self-energies, made possible by laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements of unprecedented accuracy and stability. Through a precise inversion procedure, both the effective interactions in the attractive d-wave symmetry and the repulsive part in the full symmetry are determined. The latter is nearly angle-independent. Near T c, both interactions are nearly independent of frequency and have almost the same magnitude over the complete energy range of up to about 0.4 eV, except for a low-energy feature at around 50 meV that is present only in the repulsive part, which has less than 10% of the total spectral weight. Well below T c, they both change similarly, with superconductivity-induced features at low energies. Besides finding the pairing self-energy and the attractive interactions for the first time, these results expose the central paradox of the problem of high T c: how the same frequency-independent fluctuations can dominantly scatter at angles ±π/2 in the attractive channel to give d-wave pairing and lead to angle-independent repulsive scattering. The experimental results are compared with available theoretical calculations based on antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the Hubbard model, and quantum-critical fluctuations of the loop-current order.

Abstract:Using a systematic ab initio quantum many-body approach that goes beyond low-energy models, we directly compute the superconducting pairing order of several doped cuprate materials and structures. We find that we can correctly capture two well-known trends: the pressure effect, where pairing order increases with intra-layer pressure, and the layer effect, where the pairing order varies with the number of copper-oxygen layers. From these calculations, we observe that the strength of superexchange and the covalency at optimal doping are the best descriptors of the maximal pairing order. Our microscopic analysis further identifies short-range copper spin fluctuations, together with multi-orbital charge fluctuations, as central to the pairing trends. Our work illustrates the possibility of a quantitative computational understanding of unconventional high-temperature superconducting materials.

Abstract:The key ingredients in any superconductor are the Cooper pairs, in which two electrons combine to form a composite boson. In all conventional superconductors the pairing strength alone sets the majority of the physical properties including the superconducting transition temperature T_c. In the cuprate high temperature superconductors, no such link has yet been found between the pairing interactions and T_c. Using a new variant of photoelectron spectroscopy we measure both the pair-forming (Δ) and a self energy/pair-breaking term (Γ_s) as a function of sample type and sample temperature, and we make the measurements over a wide range of doping and temperatures within and outside of the pseudogap/competing order doping regimes. In all cases we find that T_c is approximately set by a crossover between the pair-forming strength Δ and 3 times the self-energy term Γ_s - a new paradigm for superconductivity. In addition to departing from conventional superconductivity in which the pairing alone sets T_c, these results indicate the zero-order importance of the near-nodal self-energy effects compared to competing order/pseudogap effects.

Abstract:The enigma of unconventional superconductivity in doped cuprates presents a formidable challenge in the realm of condensed matter physics. Recent findings of strong near-neighbor attractions in one-dimensional cuprate chains suggest a new avenue for investigating cuprate superconductors. Consequently, we revisited the superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model at the mean-field level. Anticipating a prevalence of antiferromagnetic order due to strong local Coulomb repulsion, our calculations reveal the coexistence of superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders across a wide range of doping at sufficiently low temperatures. The mean-field results capture some key features of cuprate superconductors, including $d$-wave pairing symmetry, a dome-shaped dependence of $T_c$ on doping, and higher superconducting transition temperatures. Additionally, we observed a nearly proportional relationship between $T_c$ and the strength of the nearest-neighbor attraction, reminiscent of experimental findings at the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface. The mean-field results suggest that the extended Hubbard model could be the appropriate framework for investigating cuprate superconductivity and offer insights for more precise calculations within this model in future.

Entanglement and confinement: A new pairing mechanism in high-TC cuprates

Abstract:In this brief communication, we propose a novel pairing mechanism for high-TC cuprates to explain the 'stripy' pattern of superconductive charge near and at optimal doping levels, which also act as domain walls for the antiferromagnetic order. This new mechanism is based on the phenomenon of entanglement and confinement. The resulting simple intuitive model seems to suggest that entanglement is indeed a new strong pairing mechanism leading to high-TC superconductivity and strange metal behavior above TC . Moreover, our model can accommodate the Meissner effect.

Abstract:The pairing mechanism of high temperature superconductivity in cuprates is regarded as one of the most challenging issues that we are facing now. The core issue is about how the Cooper pairs are formed. There are plenty pictures concerning the pairing manner, and some of them postulate local pairing of charge freedom through the strong correlation effect. Here we report the spin resolved tunnelling measurements on extremely underdoped Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6-delta. Our data reveal that, when holes are doped into the system, the antiferromagnetic order is destroyed together with the filling up of the charge transfer gap by some density of states (DOS) with a maximum at about 200 meV. Consequently, an electronic structure with 4a0x4a0 basic plaquettes gradually emerges, and they become more populated versus further hole doping. In the central part of each plaquette, there are three unidirectional bars (along the Cu-O bond) enlightened by the enhanced peaks of coherence-like DOS at about +-25 meV, and the intensity is especially pronounced at oxygen sites. For the first time, we reveal an internal nematic pattern of these pairing related states which exhibit a feature of precursor gap for superconductivity. We argue that this confined nematic state within one 4a0x4a0 plaquette constitutes naturally the local pairing format. Our work shed new light in unraveling the longstanding puzzle of pairing mechanism in cuprate superconductors.

Abstract:In a self-consistent mean-field treatment of the two-dimensional t - t＇ - J model, we theoretically examine thecoupling of in-plane quasi-particles to the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in high-Tc superconductors, whichrenormalizes the fermionic self-energy. We reproduce the characteristic peak,lip-hump structure observed notonly in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, but also in superconductor-insulator-normal metal junctionsand scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments. We consider the evolution of this structure with doping. Itis shown that this kind of coupling can account for many anomalous properties of high-Tc superconductors insuperconducting states.
Effective magnetic monopole mechanism for localized electron pairing in HTS

Abstract:The mechanism responsible for spatially localized, strong coupling electron pairing characteristic of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) remains elusive and is a subject of hot debate. Here we propose a new HTS pairing mechanism which is the binding of two electrons residing in adjacent conducting planes of layered HTS materials by effective magnetic monopoles forming between these planes. The pairs localized near the monopoles form real-space seeds for superconducting droplets and strong coupling is due to the topological Dirac quantization condition. The pairing occurs well above the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Localized electron pairing around effective monopoles promotes, upon cooling, the formation of superconducting droplets connected by Josephson links. Global superconductivity arises when strongly coupled granules form an infinite cluster, and global superconducting phase coherence sets in. The resulting Tc is estimated to fall in the range from hundred to thousand Kelvins. Our findings pave the way for tailoring materials with elevated superconducting transition temperatures.

Abstract:The mechanism that leads to high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates remains an open question despite intense study for nearly two decades. Here, we introduce an SU(4) model for cuprate systems having many similarities to dynamical symmetries known to play an important role in nuclear structure physics and in elementary particle physics. Analytical solutions in three dynamical symmetry limits of this model are found: an SO(4) limit associated with antiferromagnetic order; an SU(2) limit that may be interpreted as a d-wave pairing condensate; and an SO(5) limit that may be interpreted as a doorway state between the antiferromagnetic order and the superconducting order. It is demonstrated that with a slightly broken SO(5) but under constraint of the parent SU(4) symmetry, the model is capable of describing the rich physics that is crucial in explaining why cuprate systems that are antiferromagnetic Mott insulators at half filling become superconductors through hole doping.

Abstract:I briefly review several key issues in understanding the cuprate superconductors from the point of view of doped-Mott-insulator. Then I present an effective low-energy theory and show that the phase diagram of such a model includes an anti-ferromagnetic (AF) phase, a superconducting state, and a pseudogap phase at low doping and low temperature, consistent with the experimental one. The dual topological gauge structure of this model is responsible for unifying these phases within a single framework with correct doping and temperature scales. Some unique predictions in such a model are also discussed.

Abstract:Effective spin coupling between conduction electrons mediated by local Cu moments in the doped CuO2 plane may induce the instability of the normal states of conduction electrons and pairing at Cu sites, where the superexchange interaction between local moments influenced by hole doping has been found to be Ising-like in recent experiments. By a mean field approach, we show that spin pairing and strong pair-pair interaction in the doped antiferromagnetic ordered Ising-like CuO2 plane gives rise to high-temperature superfluid condensation and the exceptional features of quasi-particle excitation in cuprates such as spin gap, pseudogap, and thelinear temperature dependence of resistivity pab in the normal states.

Abstract:Recent development in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity is reviewed, with special emphasis on the studies of the low-energy excitations of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. For cuprate superconductors, a phenomenology based on coexisting competing orders with superconductivity in the ground state of these doped Mott insulators is shown to provide a consistent account for a wide range of experimental findings. In the case of iron-based superconductors, studies of the low-energy excitations reveal interesting similarities and differences when compared with cuprate superconductors. In contrast to the single-band cuprate superconductivity with an insulating parent state, the ferrous superconductors are multi-band materials with a semi-metallic parent state and exhibit two-gap superconductivity when doped. On the other hand, both systems exhibit strong antiferromagnetic correlation and Fermi-surface distortion, leading to unconventional pairing symmetries with sign-changing order parameters on different parts of the Fermi surface. These findings suggest that the pairing potentials in both the cuprate and the ferrous superconductors are generally repulsive, thus favor a pairing mechanism that is electronically driven and a pairing strength that is closely related to the electronic correlation. The physical implications of the unified phenomenology based on antiferromagnetic correlations and remaining open issues associated with the cuprate and ferrous superconductivity are discussed.
Pairing Symmetries of Unconventional High Temperature Superconductivity in a Zinc-Blende Structure

Abstract:We classify the pairing symmetries of three-dimensional superconductivity in the zinc-blende structure which can support an electronic environment to host unconventional high temperature superconductivity, and calculate the pairing symmetry in the presence of strong electron-electron correlation by the slave boson mean-field approach. We find that the $d_{2z^2-x^2-y^2} \pm id_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing state, a three dimensional analogy of the $d\pm id$ pairing in a two dimensional square lattice, is ubiquitously favored near half filling upon hole doping in both single-orbital and three-orbital models. However, unlike the two dimensional counterpart, the Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectrum of the three dimensional state upholds the full $T_d$ point group symmetry and encompasses point nodes along certain high symmetric lines.

Abstract:A mechanism of d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductivity is proposed for the high-T_c cuprates based on a spin texture with non-zero topological density induced by doped holes through Zhang-Rice singlet formation. The pairing interaction arises from the magnetic Lorentz force like interaction between the holes and the spin textures. The stability of the pairing state against the vortex-vortex interaction and the Coulomb repulsion is examined. The mechanism suggests appearance of a p-wave pairing component by introducing anisotropy in the CuO_2 plane.

Nature of the Effective Interaction in Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors: A Sign-Problem-free Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Abstract:Superconductivity is an emergent phenomena in the sense that the energy scale associated with Cooper pairing is generically much lower than the typical kinetic energy of electrons. Addressing the mechanism of Cooper pairing amounts to determine the effective interaction that operates at low energies. Deriving such an interaction from a bottom-up approach has not been possible for any superconductor, especially strongly correlated ones. Top-down approaches, where one assumes an effective interaction, is plagued with the difficulty of extracting the implied electronic instabilities without uncontrolled approximations. These facts severely hinder our ability to determine the pairing mechanism for high temperature superconductors. Here we perform large-scale sign-problem-free quantum Monte-Carlo simulations on an effective theory, featured with antiferromagnetic and nematic fluctuations, to study the intertwined antiferromagnetic, superconducting, and charge density wave instabilities of the cuprates. Our results suggest the inclusion of nematic fluctuations is essential in order to produce the observed type of charge density wave ordering. Interestingly we find that the d-wave Cooper pairing is enhanced by nematic fluctuations.
Coupled electronic and magnetic excitations in the cuprates and their role in the superconducting transition

Abstract:The formation of Cooper pairs, a bound state of two electrons of opposite spin and momenta by exchange of a phonon [1], is a defining feature of conventional superconductivity. In the cuprate high temperature superconductors, even though it has been established that the superconducting state also consists of Cooper pairs, the pairing mechanism remains intensely debated. Here we investigate superconducting pairing in the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+\delta (Bi2212) cuprate by employing spectral functions obtained directly from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments as input to the Bethe-Salpeter gap equation. Assuming that Cooper pairing is driven solely by spin fluctuations, we construct the single-loop spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing interaction, and use it to compute the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the particle-particle channel for multiple Bi2212 samples. The key point of our results is that, as the temperature is reduced, the leading eigenvalue increases upon approaching Tc, reaching a value of approximately 1 at the Tc corresponding to each doping value, indicating a superconducting transition with d-wave eigenfunctions. This suggests that spin fluctuations can approximately account for Tc and, consequently, mediate pairing in the cuprate high temperature superconductors.

Abstract:Based on a hybrid interlayer coupling mechanism, we study the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in trilayer cuprates. By introducing an interlayer magnetic scattering term, we solve the multilayer t-J model with Josephson coupling under the framework of Gutzwiller projection. We show that both the SC and AFM orders in the multilayered system are enhanced and the range of AFM order is extended. The layer configuration of d-wave pairing gap and AFM order further plays an essential role in determining the interlayer magnetic and superconducting coupling phase diagram of such multilayered systems. Abrupt phase transitions between correlated states carrying distinct configurational symmetries are unveiled by tuning the doping level and/or the tunneling strengths.
