Abstract:Household waste is the primary source of environmental pollution due to global population growth compared to other waste sources. This article aims to develop a framework for a smart and integrated household waste management system through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA). The resulting framework not only focuses on information technology dimensions but also links them with other integrated dimensions. The framework's design identifies the types of household waste management processes based on the Integrated Sustainable Waste Management (ISWM) framework, dimensions that support smart household waste management system, and the stakeholders involved. The SLR results, which include dimensions and subdimensions supporting the smart and integrated household waste management system framework, were validated by experts from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The developed framework includes five main dimensions: Information Technology, Operational Infrastructure, Governance, Economy, and Social–Culture. It also addresses stakeholder engagement to support smart household waste management systems and identifies waste management processes based on the ISWM framework. This research uses the PRISMA technique to provide an initial framework for smart and integrated household waste management system. The proposed framework has been validated and can be further developed as a smart and integrated household waste management system. Additionally, it highlights the involvement of various dimensions identified to address waste problems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Aims to Solve This paper aims to develop a smart and integrated household waste management system framework through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) protocol. Specifically, the paper attempts to address the following issues: 1. **Types of Household Waste Management Processes**: Identify household waste management processes that support smart waste management. 2. **Dimensions Supporting Smart Waste Management**: Determine the dimensions that support a smart household waste management system. 3. **Sub-dimensions Supported by Information Technology**: Identify the sub-dimensions of information technology that support smart household waste management. 4. **Framework for Smart and Integrated Household Waste Management System**: Propose a framework for a smart and integrated household waste management system. ### Background and Motivation With the growth of the global population, household waste has become a major source of environmental pollution, more severe compared to other types of waste sources. Inadequate waste management infrastructure and unsustainable production and consumption patterns lead to an increase in household waste, which not only harms the environment but also threatens human health. For example, improper waste management can result in injuries caused by radiation or chemicals, psychological and social issues, long-term non-communicable diseases (such as cancer), and various diseases caused by biological factors (such as parasitic infections, diarrhea, dysentery, or skin irritation). Conversely, proper household waste management can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support carbon neutrality goals. The United Nations points out that efforts to support household waste management align with the 12th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), which is responsible consumption and production. ### Research Methods The paper adopts the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method and uses the PRISMA protocol for literature screening and data extraction. The main steps include: 1. **Determining Eligibility Criteria**: Using the PICOC (Participants, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Context) criteria to determine the eligibility of the studies. 2. **Article Selection**: Screening by title and abstract, as well as full-text screening, to identify eligible articles. 3. **Data Extraction and Synthesis**: Collecting and analyzing data from eligible articles, extracting key information, and conducting a comprehensive analysis. ### Main Contributions 1. **Framework Design**: Proposing a framework for a smart and integrated household waste management system that includes five main dimensions: information technology, operational infrastructure, governance, economy, and socio-culture. 2. **Process Identification**: Identifying household waste management processes based on the ISWM framework, including generation, separation, collection, transfer, transportation, treatment, disposal, reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery. 3. **Data Management**: Identifying the types of data managed in a smart waste management system, supporting real-time monitoring, resource allocation optimization, and the development of IoT solutions. 4. **Expert Validation**: Validating the framework through questionnaires and interviews with experts from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry to ensure its feasibility and practicality. ### Conclusion The smart and integrated household waste management system framework proposed in this study helps systematically design, implement, and evaluate waste management strategies, guide actions, and structure decision-making to support sustainable development goals. Additionally, the framework can support the circular economy through smart separation and collection devices, helping households reduce waste generation, transform waste into valuable items, and improve the environment.
