Abstract:Stylistic analysis is a new development in the teaching of college English text.The analysis of macrostructure gives an overall recognition of the text structure.The analysis of situational context reveals the situational factors in constructing a text.Patterns of thematic progression provide the learners with the developing mode of a text,while the cohesive devices provide the types of coherence.Through the analysis of grammatical metaphor,readers can comprehend the techniques of wording.Functional stylistic analysis of an English text from macro to micro offers theoretical grounds for effectiveness of reading and the coherence of writing.
Applying Functional Stylistics to Reading Classes of English Majors

Abstract:Reading is one of the major courses of English majors. Applying the model of functional stylistics to the reading classes of English majors redounds to the development of students’ awareness and sensitivity about styles. It helps to analyze and appreciate literary works from a view different from the traditional syntactic analysis. The author takes one article, i.e. Why I Want A Wife, at random from reading materials for English majors as an example, and analyzes it from three aspects of functional stylistics: interpersonal functions, textual functions and ideational functions respectively to see how the semantic potential is expressed. This paper aims at exploring a new model for discourse analysis in the reading classes of English majors.

It presents an analysis from three aspects: context, experiential meaning and interpersonal meaning, patterning and deviation to approach the theme of O' Henry's short story: “The Cop and the Anthem”. The approach further confirms that linguistic analysis can provide us with a new perspective to appreciate and evaluate literary works.

Abstract:As the most influential theory in the last 20th century, Systemic Functional Linguistics provided a brand new perspective for analysis of literary works. This theory enables the linguistics and scholars to analyze language concisely and deeply. The Cop and the Anthem, as one of O. Henry’s famous short story, revealed the real side of American society in humorous language. This paper interprets the text of the Cop and the Anthem from the perspective of Functional Stylistic to analyze its language expression characteristics, plot setting and full-text cohesion. It’s expected to provide reference for the functional stylistic analysis of relevant types of short stories.

Abstract:This paper is aimed at comparing and presenting two grammar books about simple past tense teaching. One of them is Susan Kesner Bland Intermediate Grammar: From Form to Meaning and Use. And John e Alison Kooistra the power drill, reproducible 70 lessons. In order to do so, we trace the question “what’s the difference between teaching simple past tense in two different approaches?” We intend to bring up the functional and formal approach. Therefore, we inspire this work based on qualitative research in a descriptive method. For achieving our thesis, we cut out simple past tense throughout this paper. Hence, we intend to spot this work based on it. Thus, we concluded that, two grammar books that spread two different approaches: functional and formal. In deep, we found that the formal one is bound to rules, while the functional one is related to contextualized situations. Furthermore, the functional one is adjusted to contemporaneity in the classroom context. While the formal approach overview only on a universal grammar. Formal linguistics is embodied most notably by the work of Noam Chomsky and the paradigm of Generative Grammar. Afterward, we intend to reflect which approach should be better for a classroom and student’s learning.

Abstract:Systemic Functional Linguistics has experienced over 40 years of application to literary discourse analysis and gained considerable achievements, with particular reference to the ideational and interpersonal areas. Contrary to that situation is the textual area, which, except for cohesion, is much less explored in thematization and information. This paper aims to fill this gap. Taking the short narrative text Gehenna I investigate thematic and information creating patterns for their aesthetic effects. There exist types of unfolding routines in literary texts that are oriented towards stylistic goals. The observations manifest once again the power of SFL in its appliability.

Stylistics understands the deep meaning through the surface language form, thus enhances the appropriateness of the language expression. Therefore, stylistics analysis method is an important means to reform the intensive reading course teaching and improve the teaching quality. This paper discusses the application of stylistics in college English teaching from the aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It can develop students' ability to appreciate and distinguish languages and improve their logical thinking ability and finally improve students' reading comprehension ability. By introducing stylistic analysis theory into college English reading class, students can improve their understanding of articles from words to texts, and develop their ability of comprehensive processing texts.

Abstract:Based on the cases of senior spoken Chinese teaching,from the perspectives of "Function ","Text " and "Situation " in the functional grammar,the article makes a statistical analysis on the pragmatic points,material types and communicative situations of the textbook.Furthermore,it makes a thorough comparison between the requirements of Common Reference Framework for European Languages and the Chinese textbook.This article argues that current textbooks do not provide enough coverage of topics and material types,and also the texts and exercises usually have great differences in material types.Therefore,it is very important for teachers to apply functional grammar approach in course design.

Abstract:The paper aims to,on the basis of dependency grammar,investigate how Chinese words are used in texts of different styles to fulfill syntactic function in corpora.We use two dependency corpora —XINWENLIANBO and SHIHUASHISHUO— as the samples of written Chinese and spoken Chinese,and two smaller dependency corpora,XJ-K and XJ-S,as supplements.The results show that spoken Chinese and written Chinese show considerable difference in the word classes that are used to fulfill certain syntactic function.To be specific,most subjects are nouns in written Chinese,while pronouns in spoken Chinese.In addition,in spoken Chinese,many word classes can serve as attributives,and yet it is overwhelmingly nouns that serve as attributives in written Chinese.

Abstract:It is a new subject for the study of Chinese grammar to analyse the Chinese sentence patterns functionally. This functional analysis is not the "pragmatic" one based upon the western syntactic frame of "subject-central verb-object", neither the mood one, but the structural studies proper of Chinese sentence pattern. It is a new choice of Chinese grammar in theory and methodology after understanding the cultural traits of Chinese grammar.

Abstract:The application of systematic functional linguistics on stylistics is helpful for people to analyze various dis-courses from more scientific perspectives in a comprehensive way.By taking a short poem,Never Admit the Pain,writ-ten by Mary Gilmore as discourse,with functional stylistics theory discusses the characteristics of poem on the aspectsof language field,context,grammatical metaphor,demarcation of strophe,structure of verse,transitivity of verse,plan-ning a composition and its angle,connection of discourse,interpersonal function etc.,and their grammatical metaphorsignificance.This shows functional stylistics can offer objective standard for stylistic analysis of discourse,therebymake readers′subjective understanding on discourse establish scientifically on the basis of objective standard.At thesame time,this explains that system function theory has very strong application value and maneuverability.

Abstract:Among the three metafunctions in Systemic Functional Linguistics,the interpersonal metafunction is concerned with the interaction between speaker(s) and addressee(s)-the grammatical resources for enacting social roles in general,and speech roles in particular,in dialogic interaction.Based on this theoretical hypothesis,Systemic functional linguist Martin and his colleagues then proposed the Appraisal approach to language studies,which is used to reflect and describe the linguistic resources for evaluation in discourse.A key concept in this paradigm is system,which incorporates in itself three subsystems-attitude,engagement and graduation.This research paradigm on the one hand propels the development in evaluation studies in linguistics and on the other,motivates the advancement of discourse analysis.The subjectivity and vagueness of this approach,however,hinders its application in actual discourse analysis;at the same time this dilemma in turn presents before it the room for further research and a charming future for this approach to language.

Abstract:Based on the application of functional linguistics in junior middle school English teaching, this article first illustrates the concepts of systematic grammar and functional grammar. Secondly, according to the application of functional grammar in reading, in translation and in writing, it is concluded that applied linguistics has an important role in promoting junior middle school English teaching, which comprehensively illustrates the importance of functional linguistics in junior middle school English teaching. Functional linguistics is of great significance to instruct junior middle school teaching. Abstract:Compared to the philological disciplines of general systematic nature functional stylistics and the studies of vertical context are relatively young and underdeveloped: the definitions of the disciplines in question are there, but the details have either not been investigated or have not been universally agreed upon. The aim of the present paper is to reveal the relevant points concerning functional stylistics and the investigations of vertical context as such and to study these two phenomena in their interrelation. Our analysis has shown that in the more neutral varieties of different functional styles vertical context elements are used sparingly realizing the communicative function of language. The conceptually condensed specialized (academic and official) texts contain a greater amount of these elements fulfilling the intellective function and being directly relevant to developing the main idea of the text; taken together these elements form a consistent global thematic whole. In highly expressive journalistic texts the amount of vertical context elements is equally considerable, but their function is different: instead of developing the main idea they serve as mere intensifiers and their connection with each other is thematically loose and very general or simply non-existent, for they either develop the opposition of good and bad or refer to facts unrelated to each other, thus flaunting the authors sophistication only; vertical context elements here fulfill the aesthetic function of language or strive to render specialized and emotional kinds of content simultaneously. In imaginative writing apart from allusions and quotations, which one may come across in any text, special attention should be given to symbolic texts where one is likely to find vertical context elements aplenty, they perform mainly the aesthetic function of language, and deciphering them proves to be a gratifying undertaking adding significantly to the adequate interpretation of the material under study.

Abstract:The study and analysis of texts from a linguistic and literary viewpoint is known as stylistics. This research looked at the fundamental language devices Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie employed in The Thing Around Your Neck to communicate with her audience and the larger society. A functional approach was used, in which special attention was paid to the stylistic function, impact, and thematic importance of language elements in literary texts. Morphology, graphology, phonology, syntax, lexico-semantics, and point of view were the stylistic devices used. After using these techniques on the novel, it became clear that language is an essential component of all works of art and that a work's success depends on the writer's skill in manipulating language. Through her systematic use of language, Adichie has made adjustments that have improved understanding of her work.

Starting from the two aspects of mood and modality systems, the paper analyzes English advertising, and further explores how the clever use of mood and modality systems plays an important role in these advertisements.
