Abstract:We present a holographic single-shot coherent diffractive imaging method based on in-line holography that allows the ultrafast characterization of 2D transmission maps of semi-transparent planar targets such as foils in amplitude and phase. Holographic information is obtained from the interference of the transmitted primary beam with the fields scattered from the modified or unknown target regions. A specialized iterative phase retrieval is used to incorporate the holographic nature of the approach and to accelerate and improve convergence. The achievable quality and reproducibility of the reconstructed transmission maps as well as optimal setup parameters are investigated using realistic pre-characterized reference targets. We used non-circular laser-induced hole structures in 30 nm thin gold foils that represent the final state of a laser modification and show that the far field error of the reconstructed diffraction images can be used to estimate and optimize the reconstruction quality in the object plane in order to obtain accurate and reproducible transmission maps. Our results mark the important first step towards the full spatio-temporal analysis of all stages of laser material modification or laser ablation in two-color pump probe experiments, including

Abstract:Abstract Cameras with extreme speeds are enabling technologies in both fundamental and applied sciences. However, existing ultrafast cameras are incapable of coping with extended three-dimensional scenes and fall short for non-line-of-sight imaging, which requires a long sequence of time-resolved two-dimensional data. Current non-line-of-sight imagers, therefore, need to perform extensive scanning in the spatial and/or temporal dimension, restricting their use in imaging only static or slowly moving objects. To address these long-standing challenges, we present here ultrafast light field tomography (LIFT), a transient imaging strategy that offers a temporal sequence of over 1000 and enables highly efficient light field acquisition, allowing snapshot acquisition of the complete four-dimensional space and time. With LIFT, we demonstrated three-dimensional imaging of light in flight phenomena with a <10 picoseconds resolution and non-line-of-sight imaging at a 30 Hz video-rate. Furthermore, we showed how LIFT can benefit from deep learning for an improved and accelerated image formation. LIFT may facilitate broad adoption of time-resolved methods in various disciplines.

Fast spectroscopic imaging using extreme ultraviolet interferometry

Abstract:Extreme ultraviolet pulses as generated by high harmonic generation (HHG) are a powerful tool for both time-resolved spectroscopy and coherent diffractive imaging. However, the integration of spectroscopy and microscopy to harness the unique broadband spectra provided by HHG is hardly explored due to the challenge to decouple spectroscopic and microscopic information. Here, we present an interferometric approach to this problem that combines Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS) with Fourier transform holography (FTH). This is made possible by the generation of phase-locked pulses using a pair of HHG sources. Crucially, in our geometry the number of interferometric measurements required is at most equal to the number of high harmonics in the illumination, and can be further reduced by incorporating prior knowledge about the structure of the FTH sample. Compared to conventional FTS, this approach achieves over an order of magnitude increase in acquisition speed for full spectro-microscopic data, and furthermore allows diffraction-limited computational imaging.

Abstract:The spectral dispersion of ultrashort pulses allows the simultaneous focusing of light in both space and time, which creates so-called spatiotemporal foci. Such space–time coupling may be combined with the existing holographic techniques to give a further dimension of control when generating focal light fields. In the present study, it is shown that a phase-only hologram placed in the pupil plane of an objective and illuminated by a spatially chirped ultrashort pulse can be used to generate three-dimensional arrays of spatio-temporally focused spots. By exploiting the pulse front tilt generated at focus when applying simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF), it is possible to overlap neighboring foci in time to create a smooth intensity distribution. The resulting light field displays a high level of axial confinement, with experimental demonstrations given through two-photon microscopy and the non-linear laser fabrication of glass.

Abstract:Recent advances in the field of attosecond science hold the promise of tracking electronic processes at the shortest space and time scales. Imaging methods that combine attosecond temporal with nanometer spatial resolution are currently out of reach. Coherent diffractive imaging is based on the diffraction by a sample of a quasi-monochromatic illumination with a coherence time that exceeds the duration of an attosecond pulse. Due to the extremely broad nature of attosecond spectra, novel imaging techniques are required. Here, we present an approach that enables coherent diffractive imaging with a broadband isolated attosecond source. The method is based on a numerical monochromatisation of the broadband diffraction pattern by the regularised inversion of a matrix which depends only on the spectrum of the diffracted radiation. Experimental validations in the visible and hard X-rays show the applicability of the method. Because of its generality and ease of implementation for single attosecond pulses we expect this method to find widespread applications in future attosecond technologies such as petahertz electronics, attosecond nanomagnetism or attosecond energy transfer.

Abstract:Ultrafast imaging is a powerful tool for studying space-time dynamics in photonic material, plasma physics, living cells, and neural activity. Pushing the imaging speed to the quantum limit could reveal extraordinary scenes about the questionable quantization of life and intelligence, or the wave-particle duality of light. However, previous designs of ultrafast photography are intrinsically limited by framing speed. Here, we introduce a new technique based on a multiple non-collinear optical parametric amplifier principle (MOPA), which readily push the frame rate into the area of ten trillion frames per second with higher spatial resolution than 30 line pairs per millimeter. The MOPA imaging is applied to record the femtosecond early evolution of laser-induced plasma grating in air for the first time. Our approach avoids the intrinsic limitations of previous methods, thus can be potentially optimized for higher speed and resolution, opening the way of approaching quantum limits to test the fundamentals.

Abstract:Abstract The presence of a scattering medium in the imaging path between an object and an observer is known to severely limit the visual acuity of the imaging system. We present an approach to circumvent the deleterious effects of scattering, by exploiting spectral correlations in scattered wavefronts. Our Synthetic Wavelength Holography (SWH) method is able to recover a holographic representation of hidden targets with sub-mm resolution over a nearly hemispheric angular field of view. The complete object field is recorded within 46 ms, by monitoring the scattered light return in a probe area smaller than 6 cm × 6 cm. This unique combination of attributes opens up a plethora of new Non-Line-of-Sight imaging applications ranging from medical imaging and forensics, to early-warning navigation systems and reconnaissance. Adapting the findings of this work to other wave phenomena will help unlock a wider gamut of applications beyond those envisioned in this paper.

Abstract:Cameras capable of capturing videos at a trillion frames per second allow to freeze light in motion, a very counterintuitive capability when related to our everyday experience in which light appears to travel instantaneously. By combining this capability with computational imaging techniques, new imaging opportunities emerge such as 3D imaging of scenes that are hidden behind a corner, the study of relativistic distortion effects, imaging through diffusive media and imaging of ultrafast optical processes such as laser ablation, supercontinuum and plasma generation. We provide an overview of the main techniques that have been developed for ultra-high speed photography with a particular focus on 'light-in-flight' imaging, i.e. applications where the key element is the imaging of light itself at frame rates that allow to freeze its motion and therefore extract information that would otherwise be blurred out and lost.

Abstract:Ultrafast X-ray imaging on individual fragile specimens such as aerosols1, metastable particles2, superfluid quantum systems3 and live biospecimens4 provides high-resolution information that is inaccessible with conventional imaging techniques. Coherent X-ray diffractive imaging, however, suffers from intrinsic loss of phase, and therefore structure recovery is often complicated and not always uniquely defined4,5. Here, we introduce the method of in-flight holography, where we use nanoclusters as reference X-ray scatterers to encode relative phase information into diffraction patterns of a virus. The resulting hologram contains an unambiguous three-dimensional map of a virus and two nanoclusters with the highest lateral resolution so far achieved via single shot X-ray holography. Our approach unlocks the benefits of holography for ultrafast X-ray imaging of nanoscale, non-periodic systems and paves the way to direct observation of complex electron dynamics down to the attosecond timescale.

Abstract:Photoelectron holography constitutes a powerful tool for the ultrafast imaging of matter, as it combines high electron currents with subfemtosecond resolution, and gives information about transition amplitudes and phase shifts. Similarly to light holography, it uses the phase difference between the probe and the reference waves associated with qualitatively different ionization events for the reconstruction of the target and for ascertaining any changes that may occur. These are major advantages over other attosecond imaging techniques, which require elaborate interferometric schemes in order to extract phase differences. For that reason, ultrafast photoelectron holography has experienced a huge growth in activity, which has led to a vast, but fragmented landscape. The present review is an organizational effort towards unifying this landscape. This includes a historic account in which a connection with laser-induced electron diffraction is established, a summary of the main holographic structures encountered and their underlying physical mechanisms, a broad discussion of the theoretical methods employed, and of the key challenges and future possibilities. We delve deeper in our own work, and place a strong emphasis on quantum interference, and on the residual Coulomb potential.

Superluminal Motion-Assisted 4-Dimensional Light-in-Flight Imaging

Abstract:Advances in high speed imaging techniques have opened new possibilities for capturing ultrafast phenomena such as light propagation in air or through media. Capturing light-in-flight in 3-dimensional xyt-space has been reported based on various types of imaging systems, whereas reconstruction of light-in-flight information in the fourth dimension z has been a challenge. We demonstrate the first 4-dimensional light-in-flight imaging based on the observation of a superluminal motion captured by a new time-gated megapixel single-photon avalanche diode camera. A high resolution light-in-flight video is generated with no laser scanning, camera translation, interpolation, nor dark noise subtraction. A machine learning technique is applied to analyze the measured spatio-temporal data set. A theoretical formula is introduced to perform least-square regression, and extra-dimensional information is recovered without prior knowledge. The algorithm relies on the mathematical formulation equivalent to the superluminal motion in astrophysics, which is scaled by a factor of a quadrillionth. The reconstructed light-in-flight trajectory shows a good agreement with the actual geometry of the light path. Our approach could potentially provide novel functionalities to high speed imaging applications such as non-line-of-sight imaging and time-resolved optical tomography.

Large-volume focus control at 10 MHz refresh rate via fast line-scanning amplitude-encoded scattering-assisted holography

Abstract:The capability of focus control has been central to optical technologies that require both high temporal and spatial resolutions. However, existing varifocal lens schemes are commonly limited to the response time on the microsecond timescale and share the fundamental trade-off between the response time and the tuning power. Here, we propose an ultrafast holographic focusing method enabled by translating the speed of a fast 1D beam scanner into the speed of the complex wavefront modulation of a relatively slow 2D spatial light modulator. Using a pair of a digital micromirror device and a resonant scanner, we demonstrate an unprecedented refresh rate of focus control of 31 MHz, which is more than 1,000 times faster than the switching rate of a digital micromirror device. We also show that multiple micrometer sized focal spots can be independently addressed in a range of over 1 MHz within a large volume of 5 mm x 5 mm x 5.5 mm, validating the superior spatiotemporal characteristics of the proposed technique - high temporal and spatial precision, high tuning power, and random accessibility in a three-dimensional space. The demonstrated scheme offers a new route towards three-dimensional light manipulation in the 100 MHz regime.

Double-slit holography—a single-shot lensless imaging technique

Abstract:In this study, we propose a new method for single-shot, high-resolution lensless imaging called double-slit holography. This technique combines the properties of in-line and off-axis holography in one single-shot measurement using the simplest double-slit device: a plate with two apertures. In double-slit holography, a plane wave illuminates the two apertures giving rise to two spherical waves. While diffraction of one spherical wave from a sample positioned behind the first aperture (the object aperture) provides the object wave, the other spherical wave diffracted from the second (reference) aperture provides the reference wave. The resulting interference pattern in the far-field (hologram) combines the properties of an in-line (or Gabor-type) hologram and an off-axis hologram due to the added reference wave from the second aperture. Both the object and reference waves have the same intensity, which ensures high contrast of the hologram. Due to the off-axis scheme, the amplitude and phase distributions of the sample can be directly reconstructed from the hologram, and the twin image can be easily separated. Due to the object wave being the same as in-line holography with a spherical wave, imaging at different magnifications is similarly done by simply adjusting the aperture-to-sample distance. The resolution of the reconstructed object is given by the numerical aperture of the optical setup and the diameter of the reference aperture. It is shown both by theory and simulations that the resolution of the reconstructed object depends on the diameter of the reference wave aperture but does not depend on the diameter of the object aperture. Light optical proof-of-concept experiments are provided. The proposed method can be particularly practical for X-rays, where optical elements such as beam splitters are not available and conventional off-axis holography schemes cannot be realised.
