Abstract:The development and design of efficient photoelectric catalysts is of great significance for environmental friendliness. This paper is devoted to finding a new two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction to realize hydrogen production from water splitting. Based on first-principles calculations, a direct type-Z C3N/WS2 heterojunction was successfully designed by combining highly active two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with C3N similar in structure to graphene. The staggered band structure of the direct Z-scheme and high carrier mobility facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. More importantly, the C3N/WS2 direct Z-type heterojunction can perfectly realize total water splitting from pH = 0 to pH = 7. What's more, the Gibbs free energy and overpotential demonstrate the excellent hydrogen evolution capability and the oxygen evolution capacity of the material. In , these studies provide new ideas for designing high-performance photoelectric catalysts for visible-light water splitting.

Abstract:The two-dimensional layered heterostructure have been demonstrated as an effective method for achieving efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this work, we propose, for the first time, the creation of van der Waals heterostructures from monolayers of SiH and g-C3N4 using first-principle calculations. We also systematically investigated additional properties for the first time, such as the electronic structure and optical behavior of van der Waals heterostructures composed of SiH and g-C3N4 monolayers. The results of this study show that the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure is categorized as a type-II heterostructure, which has a bandgap of 2.268 eV. Furthermore, the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure interface was observed to efficiently separate and transfer photogenerated charges, resulting in an enhanced photocatalytic redox performance. Moreover, the calculation of HOMO (Highest occupied molecular orbital) and LUMO (Least unoccupied molecular orbital) and charge density difference can further confirm that the SiH/g-C3N4 heterojunction is a type-II heterojunction, which has excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production and water decomposition performance. In addition, the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure exhibited excellent HER (Hydrogen evolution reaction) efficiency. This is essential for the process of photocatalytic water splitting. In SiH/g-C3N4 heterojunctions, the redox potential required for water splitting is spanned by the band edge potential. Calculating the absorption spectra, it was discovered that the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure possesses outstanding optical properties within the visible-light range, implying its high efficiency in photocatalytic hydrogen production. This research provides a broader research direction for the investigation of novel efficient photocatalysts and offers effective theoretical guidance for future efficient photocatalysts.

Multifunctional silicene/CeO2 heterojunctions: Desirable electronic material and promising water-splitting photocatalyst

Abstract:The first-principles calculations demonstrate that covalently bonded (cb) heterojunction and van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction can coexist in silicene/CeO2 heterojunctions, due to the different stacking patterns. Especially, the cb heterojunction with band gap of 1.97 eV, forms a type-II heterojunction, exhibits good redox performance and has high-effective optical absorption spectra, thus it is a promising photocatalyst for overall water splitting. Besides, for the vdW heterojunction, the Dirac cone of silicene is well kept on CeO2 semiconducting substrate, with a considerable energy gap of 0.43 eV, which can be an ideal material in building silicene-based electronic device. These results may open a new gateway in both of nanoelectronic device and energy conversion for silicene/CeO2 nanocomposites.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting driven by photon excitation is a promising method for generating clean energy. This study focuses on designing a two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction photocatalyst, created by vertically stacking SnS2 and ZrSi2N4. The intrinsic mechanisms and hydrogen evolution potential of this system were systematically investigated using first-principles calculations. The results demonstrate that the SnS2/ ZrSi2N4 heterojunction is a type II heterojunction with an indirect band gap, and the staggered energy bands effectively separate the photogenerated carriers and enhance photocatalytic efficiency. Additionally, the near- ideal band gap of 2.30 eV ensures good light absorption while providing sufficient driving force for water decomposition. The band-edge positions of the heterojunction span the redox potential of water, which means that, in aqueous solutions with a pH range of 0-4, the external potential generated by photogenerated electrons is adequate to spontaneously drive hydrogen evolution through water splitting. Simultaneously, the Gibbs free energy (Delta G =-0.11 eV) being close to zero indicates that this heterojunction can effectively facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, the exceptional electron mobility (2048.38 cm2 & sdot;V- 1 & sdot; S- 1 ), hole mobility (4299.49 cm2 & sdot;V- 1 & sdot; S- 1 ), and solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of up to 17.92 % underscore its immense potential as an effective photocatalyst. This work offers innovative approaches for achieving efficient photocatalytic water decomposition, advancing the development of clean energy solutions.
High-performance photocatalyst for overall water splitting: type-II WSi2N4/MoSi2N4 heterostructure

Abstract:We have conducted first-principle calculations to reveal Type-II vdW heterostructure WSi2N4/MoSi2N4 with high catalytic performance, focusing on the excellent optoelectronic properties of the MA2Z4 family of 2D materials. Initially, we investigated the performance of photocatalytic water splitting of MA2Z4 family monolayers, which exhibit higher carrier mobility than traditional two-dimensional materials. Moreover, we built vdW heterostructures based on the MA2Z4 family to promote carrier spatial separation and suppress electron-hole interlayer recombination. The results show that the WSi2N4/MoSi2N4 heterostructure has negative binding energy (-33.47 meVÅ-2) and forms the built-in electric field with an average charge transfer of 0.03e. Interestingly, we found that strain tuning can enhance the solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies to 18.01% at 3% biaxial strain, and the heterostructure exhibits a high light absorption coefficient with a band gap of 2.007eV. In conclusion, the WSi2N4/MoSi2N4 heterostructure with high performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production represents a new impetus for achieving carbon neutrality.

Two-dimensional Cs3Sb2I9/C2N van der Waals type-II heterostructure: a promising photocatalyst for high efficiency water splitting

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrolysis using solar energy and water resources is of great significance for alleviating the current energy shortage. Finding rational photocatalysts remains a major challenge and great efforts have already been made. Here we propose a novel two-dimensional perovskite-based vdW heterostructure (Cs3Sb2I9/C2N) and systematically investigate its stability, electronic and optical properties and the effects of applied biaxial strain based on the first-principles approach to investigate its ability as a photocatalyst for water splitting. In order to ensure the significance of the calculation results in guiding experiments, a hybrid functional was used for all the calculations on the electronic structure. The results show that the Cs3Sb2I9/C2N heterostructure has satisfactory dynamic and thermal stability, and exhibits the characteristics of type-II band alignment in the equilibrium configuration. Charge density difference, Bader charge analysis and work function further prove that the photogenerated electrons flow from Cs3Sb2I9 to the C2N monolayer by the influence of the interface dipole, which promotes the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers and inhibits the recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers. Furthermore, the Cs3Sb2I9/C2N heterostructure has a suitable redox potential for photocatalytic water splitting and exhibits enhanced light absorption in the visible light region. In addition, the electronic and optical properties of the Cs3Sb2I9/C2N heterostructure can be tuned by strain, and the Cs3Sb2I9/C2N heterostructure always possesses photocatalytic ability after applying -2% to 6% biaxial strain. These results suggest that the Cs3Sb2I9/C2N heterostructure will be a promising candidate for water splitting photocatalysts.

Abstract:The construction of semiconductor van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the performance of photocatalysts for water splitting. In this study, a PtS 2 /HfGe 2 N 4 vdW heterojunction was designed, and its photocatalytic properties were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the heterojunction exhibits strong light absorption and features a type-II band alignment. Charge transfer within the heterojunction creates an internal electric field, enabling its action as a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst. Additionally, its well-suited band edge position facilitates the redox reactions required for water splitting. Notably, the heterojunction demonstrates a high-intensity light absorption coefficient of 3.8 × 10 5 cm −1 at 2.3 eV corresponding to the green light in the visible spectrum, highlighting the heterojunction's potential for photocatalytic water splitting applications.

Abstract:Researches on environmentally friendly semiconductor photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution have important practical significance. Here, using first-principles calculations, the CeO2(111)/hBN heterojunction was conceived. The influence of the interface effect on the structural, electronic and optical properties of the heterojunction was investigated in detail. The band gap of the heterojunction is smaller than the two individual components and forms a type-II heterojunction, improving the photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, by doping two C atoms, the band gap of heterojunction was further narrowed. Both the oxidation and reduction potential of CeO2(111)/hBN heterojunction meet the requirements of water splitting and has certain advantages over other photocatalysts in the ability for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The study revealed the possible mechanism of CeO2(111) and hBN monolayers compositing to facilitate photocatalysis and hydrogen evolution ability, which may provide a possible reference direction for the practical design of more high-quality semiconductor photocatalysts.

High Hydrogen Production in the InSe/MoSi2N4van Der Waals Heterostructure for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Very recently, the septuple-atomic-layer MoSi2N4 has been successfully synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition method. However, pristine MoSi2N4 exhibits some shortcomings, including poor visible-light harvesting capability and a low separation rate of photo-excited electron-hole pairs, when it is applied in water splitting to produce hydrogen. Fortunately, we find that MoSi2N4 can be considered as a good co-catalyst to be stacked with InSe forming an efficient heterostructure photocatalyst. Here, the electronic and photocatalytic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) InSe/MoSi2N4 heterostructure have been systematically investigated by density functional theory for the first time. The results demonstrate that 2D InSe/MoSi2N4 has a type-II band alignment with a favourable direct bandgap of 1.61 eV and exhibits suitable band edge positions for overall water splitting. Particularly, 2D InSe/MoSi2N4 has high electron mobility (104 cm2 V-1 s-1) and shows a noticeable optical absorption coefficient (105 cm-1) in the visible-light region of the solar spectrum. These brilliant properties declare that 2D InSe/MoSi2N4 is a potential photocatalyst for overall water splitting.
Mechanism of the two-dimensional WSeTe/Zr2CO2 direct Z-scheme van der Waals heterojunction as a photocatalyst for water splitting

Abstract:The direct Z-scheme van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions based on biomimetic artificial photosynthesis are a promising strategy for enhancing photocatalytic activity. Therefore, the search for superior direct Z-scheme photocatalysts is an urgent task. Herein, we predicted the WSeTe/Zr2CO2 heterostructure as a potential direct Z-scheme photocatalyst based on density functional theory (DFT). The bands of the WSeTe/Zr2CO2 heterojunction follow a typical Type-II arrangement, where the interlayer band gap is smaller than that of the individual molecular layers, and staggered alignment of the large band-edge creates conditions that allow for a direct Z-scheme. The position of the Fermi energy levels of the two monolayers determines the formation of the built-in electric field pointing from WSeTe to Zr2CO2, promoting the desired interlayer electron-hole (e--h+) recombination and suppressing the undesired carrier recombination. Finally, in-plane biaxial strain can effectively modulate the optoelectronic properties of the catalyst, while compressive strain has a more pronounced effect on the overpotential driving force of the material. Therefore, the WSeTe/Zr2CO2 heterojunction is an effective new photocatalyst satisfying the direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism with its specific application.

Abstract:The development of high-performance direct-Z Scheme heterojunctions as photocatalysts is the focus of current research, and it is also an effective way to improve the performance of photocatalysts. Based on this, we use density functional theory (DFT) to predict two-dimensional (2D) XSe 2 /SiH (X = Zr, Sn) van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction as a potential direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. The results indicate that both heterojunctions exhibit a typical Type-II band edge arrangement. Furthermore, the small band gap and built-in electric field of the heterojunctions facilitate electronic transitions between the valence band (VB) and conduction band (CB), thereby increasing the probability of interlayer electron–hole (e − -h + ) recombination within the heterojunction. This process is beneficial for the formation of direct-Z Scheme heterojunctions. In addition, the XSe 2 /SiH (X = Zr, Sn) heterojunction exhibits remarkable photogenerated electron and hole driving forces, along with exceptional light-trapping capabilities. Therefore, XSe 2 /SiH (X = Zr, Sn) heterojunction is a potential new photocatalyst.

Abstract:Based on density functional theory calculations under the framework of first‐principles, the electronic and optical characteristics of C2N/ZnTe van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure are investigated in detail. An inherent type‐II band alignment arises in the heterostructure, which possesses a 1.94 eV direct band gap. With light irradiation, the photogenerated electron‐hole pairs of heterostructure are separated on different monolayers. This helps to extending the lifetime of carriers. Additionally, the lower effective carrier mass <math>(me*=0.55m0, mh*=0.23m0)</math> is owned for the heterostructure. The heterostructure has suitable band gap and band edge positions, as well as, enhanced visible light absorption capacity, which can facilitate photocatalytic water splitting in acidic conditions. More interestingly, the redox reaction of photocatalytic water splitting can still proceed on the heterostructure after exerting a biaxial tensile strain of 2–6%. These results suggest that C2N/ZnTe vdW heterostructure will be a promising water splitting photocatalyst.

Abstract:Heterostructures are highly promising photocatalyst candidates for water splitting due to their advanced properties than those of pristine components. The ZnO/Sc2CF2 heterostructure was designed in this work, and its electronic structure was investigated to explore its potential for water splitting. The assessments of binding energy, phonon spectrum, ab initio molecular dynamics, and elastic constants provide strong evidence for its stability. The ZnO/Sc2CF2 heterostructure has an indirect band gap of 1.93 eV with a type-I band alignment. The electronic structure can be modified with strain, leading to a transition in band alignment from type-I to type-II. The heterostructure is suitable for water splitting since its VBM and CBM stride over the redox potential. The energy barrier and built-in electric field, resulting from the charge transfer, facilitate the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers, enhancing their utilization efficiency for redox processes. The photogenerated carriers in the heterostructures with lattice compression greater than 6% follow the direct-Z transfer mechanism. The ZnO/Sc2CF2 heterostructure is confirmed with high photocatalytic activity by a Gibbs free energy change of HER, which is 0.89 eV and decreases to −0.52 eV under an 8% compressive strain. The heterostructure exhibits a remarkable enhancement in both absorption range and intensity, which can be further improved with strains. All these findings suggest that the ZnO/Sc2CF2 heterostructure is an appreciated catalyst for efficient photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:The construction of an environmentally friendly and efficient photocatalyst for water splitting and hydrogen evolution can effectively alleviate the pressure of current energy consumption and environmental pollution. Herein, by using first-principles calculations, the MoSiGeN4/SiC heterojunction was studied as a potential photocatalyst. According to different stacking methods, 12 kinds of configurations of such heterojunction with high symmetry were constructed, among which four kinds show excellent stability and hence were further studied. The results show that such heterojunction is Z-scheme heterojunction, which not only has good light absorption efficiency, but also shows excellent performance of photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution. In addition, one of the stable configurations shows better photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance than precious metal catalyst Pt, and the Gibbs free energy is only −0.039 eV. It is expected to prepare a hydrogen evolution catalyst with excellent performance. Further, the possible mechanism responsible for the excellent properties of MoSiGeN4/SiC heterojunction in photocatalysis has been revealed. Abstract:Using two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure as photocatalyst for water splitting is a popular strategy for the generation of hydrogen. In this investigation, the first-principles calculations are explored to address the electronic performances of the 2D CdO/HfS2 heterostructure formed by van der Waals (vdW) forces. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure has a 1.19 eV indirect bandgap with type-II band alignment. Importantly, the CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure possesses an intrinsic Z-scheme photocatalytic characteristic for water splitting by obtaining decent band edge positions. CdO donates 0.017 electrons to the HfS2 layer in the heterostructure, inducing a potential drop to further separate the photogenerated electrons and holes across the interface. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure also has excellent optical absorption capacity, showing a promising role as a photocatalyst to decompose the water.

Abstract:In the domain of photocatalysis, type I heterojunctions have received limited attention, and the quest for effective type I photocatalysts persists. This study introduces a novel type I heterostructure, ZnS/Ga 2 SSe, and gives a systematic investigation of its electronic properties, optical properties, and photocatalytic performance by DFT calculations. Electronic properties show that ZnS/Ga 2 SSe system has a type I band alignment with a 2.26 eV band gap. Different from traditional type I heterostructure, ZnS/Ga 2 SSe has an obvious interfacial electric field and a potential barrier, which promotes spatial charge separation and addresses the drawback of easy recombination of photo-generated carriers in traditional type I heterojunctions. The calculated results of Gibbs free energy show that under the 3.3 eV external potential and pH=14, water splitting reaction can be achieved spontaneously. Moreover, the heterojunction shows good optical absorption in visible regions and 22.28% STH efficiency which is higher than the reported type I photocatalysts. The biaxial strain can modulate the electronic structure and maintain type I alignment. Tensile can reduce the bandgap and enhance optical absorption, while compression is the opposite. Under 4% tensile, STH efficiency can reach 40.3%, while -4 % compression it will decrease to 10.3%. These conclusions underline the potential of the ZnS/Ga 2 SSe heterojunction as a promising photocatalytic material candidate for water splitting and type I heterojunctions is worth exploring as photocatalysis.

Abstract:The feasibility of SiI2 monolayer as the candidate for photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen generation under the irradiation of the solar light is explored. The geometrical structure, the electronic and optical properties, the mobility of carrier and strain engineering of the monolayer are investigated based on the first-principles calculations. The results demonstrate SiI2 monolayer possesses an indirect gap of 2.33 eV (HSE06), and both the band edge and the bandgap match the redox potential conditions of the water splitting for hydrogen generation. There is an obvious optical absorption in the visible light and near-ultraviolet region and can be enhanced by the compressive strain. Moreover, the mobility of the electron is significantly different from that of the hole, implicating that the effective spatial charge separation is expectable and the ratio of the recombination of the photogenerated charge pairs is low. The primary adsorption site of the water molecule is identified. The Gibbs free energy and the adsorption energies are calculated to demonstrate the H2 generation from the water molecule splitting on the monolayer. All the considered properties support that SiI2 monolayer can be achieved as a promising candidate for the photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production under the irradiation of the solar light.

Abstract:Using two-dimensional semiconductors to build heterojunction as photocatalyst for water splitting is an important green and clean energy technology and has wide development prospects. Here, the monolayered PtS2 and g-C3N4 are used to build the direct Z-scheme van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, and the structure, electrical, Bader charge, optical properties and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency are calculated in detail through first-principle calculations. The direct Z-scheme PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure has an inherent type-II band alignment that enables it to reduce the photogenerated carriers aggregation, and it also possesses a decent band edge position to fully induce the redox reactions of decomposed water. The charge density shows that PtS2 monolayer is negatively charged while g-C3N4 monolayer is positively charged, and the interface potential drop of PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure forms a built-in electric field with the direction from g-C3N4 to PtS2. The PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure has suitable optical property, outstanding solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, high catalytic activity and thus a promising application prospect for photocatalytic water splitting.
