Nonlinear Structural Analysis Algorithm Based on the Null Space Basis

Abstract:Based on the basis of null space and M-P inverse theorem, a unified incremental solution formulae, expressed as the null space basis of the augmented matrix, were firstly formulated herein for the incremental equilibrium equation at the limit point and non-critical points. Three numerical analysis techniques, based on the M-P inverse, singular value decomposition (SVD) and pseudo up-triangular decomposition (PUTD), respectively, were developed to compute the null space basis for the augmented equilibrium matrix, as well as how to obtain the numerical incremental solution. Numerical implementations are presented. A specialized nonlinear analysis program were developed with Legend PⅡ300 in Matlab integrated development environment (IDE) using Matlab language. Finally, two classical numerical examples are used to verify the accuracy of the method aforementioned. Efficiency and accuracy, i.e. computation time and buckling load differences, have been compared in detail for various numerical approaches. The algorithm and program were proved to be efficient. This method can be used for medium scale engineering project.

Abstract:In this work we show that several problems naturally modeled as Nonlinear Absolute Value Equations (NAVE), can be restated as Nonlinear Complementarity Problems (NCP) and solved efficiently using smoothing regularizing techniques under mild assumptions. Applications include ridge optimization and resolution of nonlinear ordinary differential equations.

Abstract:To find the least squares solution of a very large and inconsistent system of equations, one can employ the extended Kaczmarz algorithm. This method simultaneously removes the error term, such that a consistent system is asymptotically obtained, and applies Kaczmarz iterations for the current approximation of this system. For random corrections of the right hand side and Kaczmarz updates selected at random, convergence to the least squares solution has been shown. We consider the deterministic control strategies, and show convergence to a least squares solution when row and column updates are chosen according to the almost-cyclic or maximal-residual choice.

Calculation and Study on ABS Control Quantity

Abstract:One of key technologies of ABS is how to calculate the control quantity. Obtaining an accurate control quantity is a prerequisite for normal ABS work no matter what control logics are used to realize the anti-blocking function. The criterion of assessing algorithm of ABS control quantity is put forward in this paper and all algorithms are compared and analyzed each other. It is proved by actual vehicle tests that the predictive effect has been achieved when provide the studied calculation results in the actual ABS control application.

Abstract:AFEPack is a general-purpose C++ library for numerical solutions of partial differential equations. With over two decades development, AFEPack has been successfully applied for scientific and engineering computational problems in a variety of areas such as computational fluid dynamics, electronic structure calculations, computational micromagnetics. In this paper, design philosophy of the library, algorithms and data structures used in the discretization of governing equations, numerical linear algebra for the discretized system, as well as the pre-processing and post-processing of the simulations, will be described systematically for the AFEPack. The realization of two main features of the library, i.e., adaptive mesh methods and parallel computing, will be introduced in detail. The potential of the library for large scale scientific/engineering problems would be demonstrated by several examples. The future works on developing the library will also be discussed.

Abstract:We investigate the use of linear programming tools for solving semidefinite programming relaxations of quadratically constrained quadratic problems. Classes of valid linear inequalities are presented, including sparse PSD cuts, and principal minors PSD cuts. Computational results based on instances from the literature are presented.
On a Frank-Wolfe Approach for Abs-smooth Functions

Abstract:We propose an algorithm which appears to be the first bridge between the fields of conditional gradient methods and abs-smooth optimization. Our problem setting is motivated by various applications that lead to nonsmoothness, such as $\ell_1$ regularization, phase retrieval problems, or ReLU activation in machine learning. To handle the nonsmoothness in our problem, we propose a generalization to the traditional Frank-Wolfe gap and prove that first-order minimality is achieved when it vanishes. We derive a convergence rate for our algorithm which is {\em identical} to the smooth case. Although our algorithm necessitates the solution of a subproblem which is more challenging than the smooth case, we provide an efficient numerical method for its partial solution, and we identify several applications where our approach fully solves the subproblem. Numerical and theoretical convergence is demonstrated, yielding several conjectures.

Abstract:The use of cloud technology can offer significant savings for the deployment of services, provided that the service is able to make efficient use of the available virtual resources to meet service-level requirements. To avoid software designs that scale poorly, it is important to make deployment decisions for the service at design time, early in the development of the service itself. ABS offers a formal, model-based approach which integrates the design of services with the modeling of deployment decisions. In this paper, we illustrate the main concepts of this approach by modeling a scalable pool of workers with an auto-scaling strategy and by using the model to compare deployment decisions with respect to client traffic with peak loads.

Abstract:The goal of this work is to construct and study hybrid and multiplicative two-level overlapping Schwarz algorithms with standard coarse spaces for the almost incompressible linear elasticity and Stokes systems, discretized by mixed finite and spectral element methods with discontinuous pressures. Two different approaches are considered to solve the resulting saddle point systems: a) a preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method applied to the symmetric positive definite reformulation of the almost incompressible linear elasticity system obtained by eliminating the pressure unknowns; b) a GMRES method with indefinite overlapping Schwarz preconditioner applied directly to the saddle point formulation of both the elasticity and Stokes systems. Condition number estimates and convergence properties of the proposed hybrid and multiplicative overlapping Schwarz algorithms are proven for the positive definite reformulation of almost incompressible elasticity. These results are based on our previous study [8] where only additive Schwarz preconditioners were considered for almost incompressible elasticity. Extensive numerical experiments with both finite and spectral elements show that the proposed overlapping Schwarz preconditioners are scalable, quasi-optimal in the number of unknowns across individual subdomains and robust with respect to discontinuities of the material parameters across subdomains interfaces. The results indicate that the proposed preconditioners retain a good performance also when the quasi-monotonicity assumption, required by the available theory, does not hold.

Abstract:The difference of Anti-lock Braking System(ABS) for two-wheel and four-wheel drive cars is analyzed.The influences of center differential lock and rear differential lock on ABS are studied.Several techniques are proposed to solve these problems.When rear differential is locked,the Yaw Moment Control method is taken to improve stability on split-μ roads.When center differential is locked,the decreasing threshold is adopted,which can help to calculate the reference speed.With ADAMS and Matlab co-simulation,the techniques are verified.At last,some of the techniques are proved by road tests.

Abstract:Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) describe several problems relevant to many fields of applied sciences, and their discrete counterparts typically involve the solution of sparse linear systems. In this context, we focus on the analysis of the computational aspects related to the solution of large and sparse linear systems with HPC solvers, by considering the performances of direct and iterative solvers in terms of computational efficiency, scalability, and numerical accuracy. Our aim is to identify the main criteria to support application-domain specialists in the selection of the most suitable solvers, according to the application requirements and available resources. To this end, we discuss how the numerical solver is affected by the regular/irregular discretisation of the input domain, the discretisation of the input PDE with piecewise linear or polynomial basis functions, which generally result in a higher/lower sparsity of the coefficient matrix, and the choice of different initial conditions, which are associated with linear systems with multiple right-hand side terms. Finally, our analysis is independent of the characteristics of the underlying computational architectures, and provides a methodological approach that can be applied to different classes of PDEs or with approximation problems.

Abstract:Sdpnal+ is a MATLAB software package that implements an augmented Lagrangian based method to solve large scale semidefinite programming problems with bound constraints. The implementation was initially based on a majorized semismooth Newton-CG augmented Lagrangian method, here we designed it within an inexact symmetric Gauss-Seidel based semi-proximal ADMM/ALM (alternating direction method of multipliers/augmented Lagrangian method) framework for the purpose of deriving simpler stopping conditions and closing the gap between the practical implementation of the algorithm and the theoretical algorithm. The basic code is written in MATLAB, but some subroutines in C language are incorporated via Mex files. We also design a convenient interface for users to input their SDP models into the solver. Numerous problems arising from combinatorial optimization and binary integer quadratic programming problems have been tested to evaluate the performance of the solver. Extensive numerical experiments conducted in [L.Q. Yang, D.F. Sun, and K.C. Toh, SDPNAL+: A majorized semismooth Newton-CG augmented Lagrangian method for semidefinite programming with nonnegative constraints, Math. Program. Comput. 7 (2015), pp. 331–366] show that the proposed method is quite efficient and robust, in that it is able to solve 98.9% of the 745 test instances of SDP problems arising from various applications to the accuracy of in the relative KKT residual.

Dimension reduction in heterogeneous parametric spaces with application to naval engineering shape design problems

Abstract:We present the results of the first application in the naval architecture field of a methodology based on active subspaces properties for parameters space reduction. The physical problem considered is the one of the simulation of the hydrodynamic flow past the hull of a ship advancing in calm water. Such problem is extremely relevant at the preliminary stages of the ship design, when several flow simulations are typically carried out by the engineers to assess the dependence of the hull total resistance on the geometrical parameters of the hull, and others related with flows and hull properties. Given the high number of geometric and physical parameters which might affect the total ship drag, the main idea of this work is to employ the active subspaces properties to identify possible lower dimensional structures in the parameter space. Thus, a fully automated procedure has been implemented to produce several small shape perturbations of an original hull CAD geometry, in order to exploit the resulting shapes to run high fidelity flow simulations with different structural and physical parameters as well, and then collect data for the active subspaces analysis. The free form deformation procedure used to morph the hull shapes, the high fidelity solver based on potential flow theory with fully nonlinear free surface treatment, and the active subspaces analysis tool employed in this work have all been developed and integrated within SISSA math- Lab as open source tools. The contribution will also discuss several details of the implementation of such tools, as well as the results of their application to the selected target engineering problem.

Connection between the symmetric discrete AKP system and bilinear ABS lattice equations

Abstract:In this paper, we show that all the bilinear Adler-Bobenko-Suris (ABS) equations (except Q2 and Q4) can be obtained from symmetric discrete AKP system by taking proper reductions and continuum limits. Among the bilinear ABS equations, a simpler bilinear form of the ABS H2 equation is given. In addition, an 8-point 3-dimensional lattice equation and an 8-point 4-dimensional lattice equation are obtained as by-products. Both of them can be considered as extensions of the symmetric discrete AKP equation.

Abstract:We report on experiments with a novel family of Krylov subspace methods for solving dense, complex, non-Hermitian systems of linear equations arising from the Galerkin discretization of surface integral equation models in Electromagnetics. By some experiments on realistic radar-cross-section calculation, we illustrate the numerical efficiency of the proposed class of algorithms also against other popular iterative techniques in use today.
Fast and Inverse-Free Algorithms for Deflating Subspaces

Abstract:This paper explores a key question in numerical linear algebra: how can we compute projectors onto the deflating subspaces of a regular matrix pencil $(A,B)$, in particular without using matrix inversion or defaulting to an expensive Schur decomposition? We focus specifically on spectral projectors, whose associated deflating subspaces correspond to sets of eigenvalues/eigenvectors. In this work, we present a high-level approach to computing these projectors, which combines rational function approximation with an inverse-free arithmetic of Benner and Byers [Numerische Mathematik 2006]. The result is a numerical framework that captures existing inverse-free methods, generates an array of new options, and provides straightforward tools for pursuing efficiency on structured problems (e.g., definite pencils). To exhibit the efficacy of this framework, we consider a handful of methods in detail, including Implicit Repeated Squaring and iterations based on the matrix sign function. For the former, we present a new and general floating-point stability bound that may be of independent interest. In an appendix, we demonstrate that recent, randomized divide-and-conquer eigensolvers -- which are built on fast methods for individual projectors like those considered here -- can be adapted to produce the generalized Schur form of any matrix pencil in nearly matrix multiplication time.

Abstract:In order to solve large sparse inconsistent linear equations more efficiently and accurately, based on the multi-step randomized extended Kaczmarz method, we propose three double multi-step randomized extended Kaczmarz algorithms. Firstly, we introduce the double multi-step randomized extended Kaczmarz (DMREK) algorithm with probability criteria, where the selection of parameters is based on the order of coefficient matrix, and the convergence of this algorithm has been proven. Additionally, we propose two new algorithms, namely the double randomized multi-step randomized extended Kaczmarz (DRMREK) algorithm with random parameters and the residual-based randomized multi-step randomized extended Kaczmarz (RRMREK) algorithm. Numerical experimental results demonstrate that the three new algorithms DMREK, DRMREK, and RRMREK perform well. And the RRMREK algorithm, along with others, demonstrates advantages in terms of the number of iteration steps.
