Abstract:Solvent freezing is an important method to produce polymer foams with highly tunable pore structure. However, foams prepared from aqueous solution precursors commonly suffer from poor water resistance, whereas those organo-phase systems are not environmental-friendly. Here we present that using an emulsion lyophilization method can overcome such a contradiction and synthesize multi-functional polymer foams. Commercially available polyacrylate-based emulsions with various targeted glass transition temperatures (Tgs) were applied. Adipodihydrazide molecules contained in the water phase of the emulsions reacted with the acetyl groups on the polymers during the freeze-drying, forming elastic networks to maintain the pore structure. The foams can tolerant a 650% elongation without failure and are notch insensitive. The porosity of the foams can be tuned from approximately 45% to 90% via lyophilization of diluted emulsions. The facile blending of emulsions with different targeted Tg enabled foams with multi-shape memory capability. Moreover, the foams showed an excellent mechanical damping property, and the slow recovery nature enabled a clip application of clamping extremely weak objects.

Abstract:Ice templating that uses water as a green porogen has emerged as an eco-friendly and promising approach to fabricating porous materials. However, foams prepared from aqueous solutions are typically water-intolerant owing to their hydrophilic nature. Hydrophobic foams can also be prepared through the freezing of dispersions, but extra organic solvents are often required, making it environmentally unfriendly. Herein, we develop photo-cross-linking of ice templated emulsions to produce multifunctional porous materials based on emulsifier-free photosensitive emulsions. The whole porogenation process is relatively fast (within several minutes) without freeze-drying, facilitating the roll-to-roll continuous production of porous polymers. The material versatility can be expanded with different formulations, including soft foams with high stretchability, rigid materials providing tunable shape memory properties, and hierarchical porous ceramics enabling thermal insulation. This approach is environmentally friendly and economically attractive, and the principle can be extended to diverse precursors for the production of functionalized porous materials.

Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.

Abstract:MMT emulsion after sonication was blended with polymer latex.Polymer/MMT nano-composite coating was formed by simply evaporating water, just like the case of conventional emulsion coating.Polymer/MMT nano-structured film could be formed by this colloidal packing method. Tensile strength and modulus of the films dramatically increased with increasing of MMT content up to 10%(mass). Polar functional groups introduced on the surface of the polymer particles were found to enhance tensile strength. These polar functional groups also played a key role in controlling the morphology of nano-structured films, leading to the dependence of modulus of the films on the types of functional groups.
Controlling Pore Size and Wettability of A Unique Microheterogeneous Copolymer Film with Porous Structure

Abstract:We have fabricated a mesoporous copolymer thin film whose surface pore size can be varied from submicrometer to micrometer. Our fabrication method requires microphase separation induced by a silicone surfactant during the rapid solvent evaporation and polymerizations. The sample films were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM), confocal Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ infrared (IR), attenuated total reflection (ATR), and other techniques. The characterization results show that the pore size can be controlled by altering the concentration of silicone surfactant. Furthermore, the mesoporous copolymer film with hydrophobic convex and hydrophilic concave structure exhibits both hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The unique properties can be attributed to the special heterogeneous porous structure of the polymer film. The resulting porous polymer films can be utilized in many fields, such as self-cleaning, antiadhesives, adsorption, and separation. These mesoscale-patterned surfaces can also provide a model system for investigating the interface properties of actual surfaces.

Abstract:AbstractPorous organic polymers allow the integration of various π‐units into robust porous π‐networks, but they are usually synthesized as unprocessable solids with poor light‐emitting performance as a result of aggregation‐related excitation dissipation. Herein, we report a general strategy for the synthesis of highly emissive photofunctional porous polymer films on the basis of a complementary scheme for the structural design of aggregation‐induced‐emissive π‐systems. We developed a high‐throughput and facile method for the direct synthesis of large‐area porous thin films at the liquid–electrode interface. The approach enables the preparation of microporous films within only a few seconds or minutes and allows precise control over their thickness with sub‐nanometer precision. By virtue of rapid photoinduced electron transfer, the thin films can detect explosives with enhanced sensitivity to low parts‐per‐million levels in a selective manner.

Abstract:Macroporous acrylonitrile-acrylic acid (AN-AA) copolymer hydrogels were synthesized by free-radical solution polymerizations, using ammonium persulfate (APS)/N,N,N',N'-tetramethylenediamine (TEMED) redox initiator system and alcohols porogens. The morphology, temperature and pH sensitive swelling behavior, and swelling kinetics of the resulting hydrogels were investigated. It Was found that alcohol type and concentration had great influences Oil the pore Structure and porosity of hydrogels. The pore size of hydrogel increases with the moderate increase of the length of alcohol alkyl chain. However, a further increase of alkyl length would result in the Formation of cauliflower-like structure and the decrease of pore size. The porosity of hydrogels increases with the increase of porogen concentration in the polymerization medium. The hydrogels with macroporous structure swell or shrink much faster in response to the change of pH in comparison with the conventional hydrogel without macroporous structure. Furthermore, the response rate is closely related to the porosity of the hydrogels, which could be easily controlled by modulating the concentration of the porogen in the medium. The circular swelling behavior of hydrogels indicated the formation of a relaxing three-dimensional network.

Abstract:Emulsion templating is at the forefront of producing a wide array of porous materials that offers interconnected porous structure, easy permeability, homogeneous flow-through, high diffusion rates, convective mass transfer, and direct accessibility to interact with atoms/ions/molecules throughout the exterior and interior of the bulk. These interesting features together with easily available ingredients, facile preparation methods, flexible pore-size tuning protocols, controlled surface modification strategies, good physicochemical and dimensional stability, lightweight, convenient processing and subsequent recovery, superior pollutants remediation/monitoring performance, and decent recyclability underscore the benchmark potential of the emulsion-templated porous materials in large-scale practical environmental applications. To this end, many research breakthroughs in emulsion templating technique witnessed by the recent achievements have been widely unfolded and currently being extensively explored to address many of the environmental challenges. Taking into account the burgeoning progress of the emulsion-templated porous materials in the environmental field, this review article provides a conceptual overview of emulsions and emulsion templating technique, sums up the general procedures to design and fabricate many state-of-the-art emulsion-templated porous materials, and presents a critical overview of their marked momentum in adsorption, separation, disinfection, catalysis/degradation, capture, and sensing of the inorganic, organic and biological contaminants in water and air.

Abstract:Regular micrometer-size porous polystyrene film is prepared by water droplet templating, i.e. breath figures are stabilized by the polymer in solution and thermocapillary flow arranges them into ordered packing. The influences of polystyrene molecular weight, solvent properties, and the relative humidity of atmosphere on the pattern formation and hole sizes are investigated. Two different kinds of hole packing fashion are also observed and their formation mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:Gradient macroporous polymers were produced by polymerization of emulsion templates comprising a continuous monomer phase and an internal aqueous template phase. To produce macroporous polymers with gradient composition, pore size, and foam density, we varied the template formulation, droplet size, and internal phase ratio of emulsion templates continuously and stacked those prior to polymerization. Using the outlined approach, it is possible to vary one property along the resulting macroporous polymer while retaining the other properties. The elastic moduli and crush strengths change along the gradient of the macroporous polymers; their mechanical properties are dominated by those of the weakest layers in the gradient. Macroporous polymers with gradient chemical composition and thus stiffness provide both high impact load and energy adsorption, rendering the gradient foam suitable for impact protective applications. We show that dual-dispensing and simultaneous blending of two different emulsion formulations in various ratios results in a fine, bidirectional change of the template composition, enabling the production of true gradient macroporous polymers with a high degree of design freedom.
Solvothermal Synthesis of Highly Porous Polymers and Their Controllable Transition from Macro/mesoporosity to Meso/microporosity

Abstract:Reported in this paper is a solvothermal synthesis of highly porous polydivinylbenzene. The nanoporous structures of the resultant polymers could be modulated from macro/mesoporosity to meso/microporosity by simply changing the amount of acetone solvent in the synthesis. A micro-phase separation during the solvothermal process was found to be the key factor for this transition in porous structures. The hierarchically porous polymers prepared here were characterized by N2 physi-sorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and contact angle testing. Experimental results show that these nanoporous polymers have large BET surface areas (up to 420m2/g), large pore volumes (up to 1.73cm3/g), and superhydrophobicity due to their highly porous structures, which make these nanoporous materials an excellent candidate for selective removal of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the adsorption tests, the nanoporous polymers show outstanding adsorptive capacity and very high selectivity to organic compounds, giving a great potential for indoor VOCs removal.

Abstract:Interconnected macroporous polymers were prepared by copolymerizing methyl acrylate (MA) via Pickering high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templates with modified silica particles. The pore structure of the obtained polymer foams was observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Gas permeability was characterized to evaluate the interconnectivity of macroporous polymers. The polymerization shrinkage of continuous phase tends to form open pores while the solid particles surrounding the droplets act as barriers to produce closed pores. These two conflicting factors are crucial in determining the interconnectivity of macroporous polymers. Thus, poly-Pickering HIPEs with high permeability and well-defined pore structure can be achieved by tuning the MA content, the internal phase fraction, and the content of modified silica particles.

Abstract:<p>Colloidal particles self-assembled at oil-water interfaces of Pickering emulsion served as a desired template for functional materials fabrication, raising broad attention from pharmaceutical engineering. Linking interfacial colloidal particles in Pickering emulsion based on strong molecular bonding, such as covalent bonding and ionic bonding have been widely investigated for colloidosomes preparation. This study demonstrated that relatively weak intermolecular interactions such as chemical coordination bond and hydrogen bond can also regulate the distribution of inorganic particles at the oil-water interface of emulsion. Pickering emulsion stabilized by boron nitride (BN) particles has been systematically studied by tuning the dissolved polymer in water phase after lyophilization (freeze-drying). The morphology of as-formed polymer-BN composite exhibited hollow microcapsules, "sphere-strip" mixture and aerogel, respectively, depending on the polymer/BN and polymer/water interaction. The mechanism of polymer regulating Pickering emulsion morphology has been proposed, which will enrich the current understanding of Pickering emulsion behavior during lyophilization and provide new strategy for the fabrication of functional materials.</p>

Porous Polymer Structures with Tunable Mechanical Properties Using a Water Emulsion Ink

Abstract:Recently, the manufacturing of porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with engineered porosity has gained considerable interest due to its tunable material properties and diverse applications. An innovative approach to control the porosity of PDMS is to use transient liquid phase water to improve its mechanical properties, which has been explored in this work. Adjusting the ratios of deionized water to the PDMS precursor during blending and subsequent curing processes allows for controlled porosity, yielding water emulsion foam with tailored properties. The PDMS-to-water weight ratios were engineered ranging from 100:0 to 10:90, with the 65:35 specimen exhibiting the best mechanical properties with a Young's Modulus of 1.17 MPa, energy absorption of 0.33 MPa, and compressive strength of 3.50 MPa. This led to a porous sample exhibiting a 31.46% increase in the modulus of elasticity over a bulk PDMS sample. Dowsil SE 1700 was then added, improving the storage capabilities of the precursor. The optimal storage temperature was probed, with −60 °C resulting in great pore stability throughout a three-week duration. The possibility of using these water emulsion foams for paste extrusion additive manufacturing (AM) was also analyzed by implementing a rheological modifier, fumed silica. Fumed silica's impact on viscosity was examined, revealing that 9 wt% of silica demonstrates optimal rheological behaviors for AM, bearing a viscosity of 10,290 Pa·s while demonstrating shear-thinning and thixotropic behavior. This study suggests that water can be used as pore-formers for PDMS in conjunction with AM to produce engineered materials and structures for aerospace, medical, and defense industries as sensors, microfluidic devices, and lightweight structures.

Abstract:Micropatterns of strap and farmland structures of polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) copolymer were obtained by drying the micelle solutions. The drying process of the solution was monitored by dynamic optical microscopy (OM) with a digital video camera. The surface structure of the micelle aggregations was studied by OM, scanning electron microscopy and Alpha-Step 200 profiler system. It is believed that solvent evaporation and micelle migration account for the observed micelle micropatterns. The potential application of the micropatterns is also addressed.

Abstract:Specific aggregation structures largely influence the macro-physical performances of materials. Small changes in molecular components, conformation, crystallisation and microphase transitions can dramatically alter material properties. Here, we combine a triblock copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (SES) with a homopolymer poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), fabricating elastomers with multi-hierarchical architectures. Unlike the single molecular chain of traditional elastomers, the flexible domain of these elastomers is formed via hydrogen bonding of the complex chains (A/E) of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and PAA. The polystyrene (PS) blocks are microphase-separated and hydrophobically associated, providing physically crosslinks among the flexible complex chains and enhancing the strength of the elastomers. The influence of molecular weight of the PS blocks, molecular chain length of PAA, and relative humidity on the elastomer's macro-physical properties were revealed using small-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and tensile stress–strain measurements. The PS block forms a hard spherical domain that affects the hydrogen-bonding complex behaviours of the PAA and PEO segments. Enlarging the PS sphere would hinder the formation of the PAA/PEO complex, but this trend is mitigated by shortening the PAA chain length. Hydrophobic steric hindrance by the PS sphere disturbs the association behaviours of the PAA and PEO segments. These structural differences result in different mechanical properties of the elastomers. Moreover, the elastomers adapt to changes in relative humidity and show an obviously humidity-induced glass transition. The elastomer possesses good elastic properties under lower and higher humidity conditions. The methods and ideas presented in this study will enable the construction of new types of elastomers.

Abstract:Polymer films based on polyethylene (PE) and ionomer ethylene/methacrylic acid (EMAA) copolymer blend were prepared by film blowing, whose surface properties were tuned by varying processing parameters, i.e., take up ratio (TUR). Blends of PE/EMAA copolymer were firstly prepared by the melt-mixing method, before being further blown to films. The wettability of the film was investigated by measuring the contact angle/water-film encounter time, and optical properties, i.e., the haze and transmittance. The wettability was found to be enhanced with the increase of TUR. So too was the haze, while the transmittance was found to be almost independent of TUR. The XPS and AFM results directly show the increasing polar functional groups (-COO-) on the surface and roughness with increasing TUR. Further analysis of the 2D SAXS and WAXS unveiled the origin of the invariant transmittance, which resulted from the minor change of the crystallinity and the monotonic increase of the haze, with TUR resulting from the evolution of crystal orientation. In addition to other post-modification methods, the current study provides an alternative route to prepare large-scale PE films as the template for the advanced potential applications, i.e., covering in the layer of roof, the privacy of protective windows, and multitudes of packaging.

Abstract:We prepared porous montmorillonite (MMT) clay/poly acrylic acid (PAA) composite surfaces and achieve different oil adhesion by controlling the MMT arrangement in the pore wall. Characterization of the adhesion indicates that the disordered MMT/PAA porous films can serve as low adhesive surfaces both in acidic and basic aqueous phases. The switchable oil adhesion is attributed to the change of the triple-phase liquid/liquid/solid contact line (TCL) continuity induced by the MMT arrangement in the pore wall and different hydrogen bonding interactions. These findings will help us to design novel adhesive materials by adjusting the microstructure in the film, which will be used for the construction of the future generation of microdevices and have potential applications in liquid transportation, biochemical separation, in situ detection, microfluid systems, and other areas.

A Simple and Environment-Friendly Approach for Synthesizing Macroporous Polymers from Aqueous Foams

Abstract:We propose a facile and environment-friendly approach for the preparation of macroporous polyacrylamide (PAM) via thermal-initiated polymerization of aqueous foams that are stabilized by surface-modified silica nanoparticles. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is used to delicately adjust the surface amphiphilicity of silica to stabilize aqueous foams. The air bubble size and size distribution is affected by the wettability of silica particles, solid content and air volume fraction in the foams. The morphology of macroporous polymers is observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The pore and pore throat size can be tailored effectively by varying the silica content and air volume fraction. A high porosity of 83% is achieved when the air volume fraction of the aqueous foam is 65%. PAM hydrogels obtained via polymerizing aqueous foams show pronounced advantage over the ones prepared from oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions in wastewater treatment because of their unique pore structure.
