Abstract:An emulsion crystallization method has been demonstrated to measure the nucleation rate of a thermoresponsive colloidal poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) system. The colloidal PNIPAM suspension was injected into a microfluidic flow-focusing device to generate monodispersed droplets in oil. The temperature was controlled to fine tune the volume fraction of the PNIPAM particles, and the microfluidic flow rate was varied to change the droplet sizes, thus altering the nucleation volume. Using independent droplets, we can isolate the nucleation events to eliminate the interactions among crystallites that existed in bulk or large droplet systems. Therefore, we were able to carry out accurate nucleation rate measurements of colloidal crystals. This emulsion crystallization method is promising for bridging the gap among theories, simulations, and experiments for nucleation kinetics studies.

Abstract:We have used a variety of different applied fields to control the density, growth, and structure of colloidal crystals. Gravity exerts a body force proportional to the buoyant mass and in equilibrium produces a height-dependent con centration profile. A similar body force can be obtained with electric fields on charged particles (electrophoresis), a temperature gradient on all particles, or an electric field gradient on uncharged particles (dielectrophoresis). The last is particularly interesting since its magnitude and sign can be changed by tuning the applied frequency. We study these effects in bulk (making 'dielectrophoretic bottles' or traps), to control concentration profiles during nucleation and growth and near surfaces. We also study control of non-spherical and optically anisotropic particles with the light field from laser tweezers.

Abstract:A diffractive method using a visible laser to directly monitor colloids trapped at an air/water interface under isothermal compression is discussed. Upon merely measuring the ratio of first-and second-order diffractions on the screen, the center-to-center distance of adjacent colloids can be determined. Complicated instruments such as advanced optical microscopy, geometries of the apparatus and particle tracking analysis are not necessarily required. The equation of estimation is established based on the theory of Ewald sphere construction. Fabricating and precise monitoring of a colloidal monolayer can be achieved in parallel by this noninvasive method.

Abstract:Convective self-assembly of colloidal spheres provides a simple method for fabricating two and three dimensional colloidal crystals. In this work, we investigated the layer transitions phenomena during colloidal self-assembly in a sessile drop by using an in-situ videoscopic set-up. The effects of surface charge, colloidal concentration, and surfactant additions were examined. The results show that the chemical environment plays an important role in colloidal self-assembly. In the case of ordered growth, different layer transition phenomena were observed when the colloidal concentration is different.

Abstract:AbstractAn in‐depth understanding of dynamic interfacial self‐assembly processes is essential for a wide range of topics in theoretical physics, materials design, and biomedical research. However, direct monitoring of such processes is hampered by the poor imaging contrast of a thin interfacial layer. We report in situ imaging technology capable of selectively highlighting self‐assembly at the phase boundary in real time by employing the unique photophysical properties of aggregation‐induced emission. Its application to the study of breath‐figure formation, an immensely useful yet poorly understood phenomenon, provided a mechanistic model supported by direct visualization of all main steps and fully corroborated by simulation and theoretical analysis. This platform is expected to advance the understanding of the dynamic phase‐transition phenomena, offer insights into interfacial biological processes, and guide development of novel self‐assembly technologies.

Abstract:Real-time monitoring of the binary colloidal crystal (bCC) growth via evaporation-induced cooperative self-assembly (EICSA) was studied by an in situ optical microspectroscopy technique. Evolution of the recorded reflectance spectra reveals that the whole growth process of bCCs via EICSA could be separated into three different stages corresponding to that of unary colloidal crystals because of the same evaporation model. We show the detailed cooperative self-assembly information, including the evolution of the number of layers and filling factors of different components of the growing bCCs using the scalar wave approximation method. Furthermore, when the size ratio and number ratio of the two colloids were varied, the real-time optical properties of the bCCs with various stoichiometric configurations were investigated systematically. This study would be valuable in furthering the current understanding of the bCC growth dynamics via EICSA and tailoring optical properties of hierarchical materials for applications in many fields.

Abstract:Evanescent illumination has been widely used to detect single biological macromolecules because it can notably enhance light-analyte interaction. However, the current evanescent single-molecule detection system usually requires specially designed microspheres or nanomaterials. Here we show that single protein detection and imaging can be realized on a plain glass surface by imaging the interference between the evanescent lights scattered by the single proteins and by the natural roughness of the cover glass. This allows us to quantify the sizes of single proteins, characterize the protein-antibody interactions at the single-molecule level, and analyze the heterogeneity of single protein binding behaviors. In addition, owing to the exponential distribution of evanescent field intensity, the evanescent imaging system can track the analyte axial movement with high resolution, which can be used to analyze the DNA conformation changes, providing one solution for detecting small molecules, such as microRNA. This work demonstrates a label-free single protein imaging method with ordinary consumables and may pave a road for detecting small biological molecules.

Abstract:Interfaces exist in almost all objects and processes. Investigation on the interface not only is fundamentally important but also has great application prospects. Traditionally, the interface structure is studied by electron microscopy, which cannot reflect its real structure considering the pretreated process before measurement. Monitoring the interface evolution process by these regular methods is time-consuming and unfeasible in many cases. In this perspective article, we discuss how to realize the visualizing and monitoring interface structures and dynamics by aggregation-induced emission technique, which is applicable to almost all kinds of interfaces, including gas-solid, liquid-solid, solid-solid, gas-liquid-solid, and liquid-liquid-solid. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that the circularly polarized luminescence property in prochiral aggregation-induced emission luminogens can make a great difference in this area.

Abstract:Alkaline-urea aqueous solvent system provides a novel and important approach for the utilization of polysaccharide. As one of the most important polysaccharide, chitosan can be well dissolved in this solvent system, and the resultant hydrogel material possesses unique and excellent properties. Thus the sound understanding of the gelation process is fundamentally important. However, current study of the gelation process is still limited due to the absence of direct observation and the lack of attention on the entire process. Here we show the entire gelation process of chitosan LiOH-urea aqueous system by aggregation-induced emission fluorescent imaging. Accompanied by other pseudo in situ investigations, we propose the mechanism of gelation process, focusing on the formation of junction points including hydrogen bonds and crystalline.

Abstract:In this work, the self-assembly of a two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystal in a sessile drop was directly monitored using an optical microscope. Several interesting phenomena such as different manners in forming a double layer, rapid self-assembly via dewetting, and disorder-order structure transition during the growth of 2D colloidal crystals were revealed. The influence of chemical environment on the self-assembly process in a sessile drop and thus the quality of the 2D colloidal crystal was also investigated. The in-situ observation is helpful to achieve a better understanding of the mechanism behind convective colloidal self-assembly and are useful as process guidelines in the fabrication of high-quality 2D colloidal crystals. Abstract:The interaction forces acting between colloidal particles and planar plates in liquids play an important role in determining the behaviors of the particles. An anomalously high speed motion of colloidal particles was observed in the present work on the basis of a self-developed fluorescence device. The particle speed is about an order of magnitude higher than the rotation speed of the plate. The particles in alkaline solutions move much faster than those in acidic solutions when the plate rotation speed is identical. Such differences have been explained with a physical model describing the significant contribution to particle motion from the interfacial forces between particles and solid surfaces. Abstract:Colloidal dispersions are prized as model systems to understand basic properties of materials, and are central to a wide range of industries from cosmetics to foods to agrichemicals. Among the key developments in using colloids to address challenges in condensed matter is to resolve the particle coordinates in 3D, allowing a level of analysis usually only possible in computer simulation. However in amorphous materials, relating mechanical properties to microscopic structure remains problematic. This makes it rather hard to understand, for example, mechanical failure. Here we address this challenge by studying the contacts and the forces between particles, as well as their positions. To do so, we use a colloidal model system (an emulsion) in which the interparticle forces and local stress can be linked to the microscopic structure. We demonstrate the potential of our method to reveal insights into the failure mechanisms of soft amorphous solids by determining local stress in a colloidal gel. In particular, we identify `force chains' of load-bearing droplets, and local stress anisotropy, and investigate their connection with locally rigid packings of the droplets.

Abstract:The freezing of colloidal suspensions is encountered in many natural and engineering processes such as the freezing of soils, food engineering, and cryobiology. It can also be used as a bio-inspired, versatile, and environmentally-friendly processing route for porous materials and composites. Yet, it is still a puzzling phenomenon with many unexplained features, due to the complexity of the system and the space and time scales at which the process should be investigated. We demonstrate here the interest of fast X-ray computed tomography to provide time-lapse, three-dimensional, in situ imaging of ice crystal growth in a colloidal silica suspension. The experimental measurements show that the local increase of colloid concentration does not affect the growth kinetics of the crystals, until the colloidal particles become closely packed. For particles much smaller than ice crystals, the concentrated colloidal suspension is equivalent to a simple liquid phase with higher viscosity and a freezing point determined by the concentration of colloidal particles.

Abstract:Three varied sample environments (glass slide, oil film, and in levitation) are employed for the assembly of lyotropic liquid crystals through evaporation‐induced self‐assembly. Acoustic levitation emerges as a robust method to induce phase transition, offering rapid phase diagrams with minimal sample volume and shorter analysis time compared to conventional methods. Evaporation‐induced self‐assembly (EISA) is a versatile method for generating organized superstructures from colloidal particles, offering diverse design possibilities through the manipulation of colloid size, shape, substrate nature, and environmental conditions. While some work highlighted the potential of EISA to investigate phase transitions of inorganic liquid crystals, the influence of sample environment to determine their phase diagrams is often overlooked. In this work, the self‐assembly of lyotropic liquid crystals is compared by EISA on substrates, and by acoustic levitation (absence of substrate). The focus is on imogolite nanotubes, a model colloidal system of 1D charged objects, due to their tunable morphology and rich liquid‐crystalline phase behavior. It demonstrates the feasibility to obtain phase transitions in levitating droplets and on soft hydrophobic substrates, whereas self‐assembly is limited on rigid hydrophilic supports. Moreover, the aspect ratio of the nanotubes proves to be a pivotal factor, influencing both transitions and the resulting materials shape and surface. Besides material shaping, acoustic levitation emerges as a promising method for studying phase transitions by EISA, toward the rapid establishment of phase diagrams from diluted to highly concentrated states using a limited volume of sample.

Abstract:We have directly observed motion of inorganic nanoparticles during fluid evaporation using a transmission electron microscope. Tracking real-time diffusion of both spherical (5-15 nm) and rod-shaped (5 x 10 nm) gold nanocrystals in a thin film of water-15% glycerol reveals complex movements, such as rolling motions coupled to large-step movements and macroscopic violations of the Stokes-Einstein relation for diffusion. As drying patches form during the final stages of evaporation, particle motion is dominated by the nearby retracting liquid front.

Abstract:In this article we report on the synthesis and characterization of a system of colloidal spheres suspended in an aqueous solvent which can be refractive index-matched, thus allowing for investigations of the particle near-wall dynamics by evanescent wave dynamic light scattering at concentrations up to the isotropic to ordered transition and beyond. The particles are synthesized by copolymerization of a fluorinated acrylic ester monomer with a polyethylene-glycol (PEG) oligomer by surfactant free emulsion polymerization. Static and dynamic light scattering experiments in combination with cryo transmission electron microscopy reveal that the particles have a core shell structure with a significant enrichment of the PEG chains on the particles surface. In index-matching DMSO/water suspensions the particles arrange in an ordered phase at volume fraction above 7%, if no additional electrolyte is present. The near-wall dynamics at low volume fraction are quantitatively described by the combination of electrostatic repulsion and hydrodynamic interaction between the particles and the wall. At volume fractions close to the isotropic to ordered transition, the near-wall dynamics are more complex and qualitatively reminiscent of the behaviour which was observed in hard sphere suspensions at high concentrations.

Abstract:We present recent advances in the instrumentation and analysis methods for quantitative imaging of concentrated colloidal suspensions under flow. After a brief review of colloidal imaging, we describe various flow geometries for two and and three-dimensional (3D) imaging, including a `confocal rheoscope'. This latter combination of a confocal microscope and a rheometer permits simultaneous characterization of rheological response and 3D microstructural imaging. The main part of the paper discusses in detail how to identify and track particles from confocal images taken during flow. After analyzing the performance of the most commonly used colloid tracking algorithm by Crocker and Grier extended to flowing systems, we propose two new algorithms for reliable particle tracking in non-uniform flows to the level of accuracy already available for quiescent systems. We illustrate the methods by applying it to data collected from colloidal flows in three different geometries (channel flow, parallel plate shear and cone-plate rheometry).
