Abstract:Notorious Zn dendrites and severe parasitic side reactions severely disrupt the anode-electrolyte interface during Zn plating/stripping, resulting in uncontrollable Zn deposition and limiting the application of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). Whereas the construction of artificial interface is a highly desirable strategy, it is often limited by slow Zn2+ transport kinetics. To address these issues, we presents a bifunctional polymer coating (PEPM) constructed from a highly conductive PEDOT:PSS and monolayer MoS2, where the introduced PEDOT plays an important role in driving the fast Zn ion transfer kinetics as a zincophilic site and the 2D MoS2 acts as a buffer layer to induce uniform Zn nucleation. With this corrosion inhibition and nucleation-oriented coating, the mobility of Zn2+ flux and the uniformity of Zn deposition and were significantly improved, resulting in a stable plating/stripping performance at an ultra-low overpotential ( 99.4%) of 1000 cycles without significant dendrite formation. The proposed strategy provides a cost-efficient remedy and opens a new avenue for the development of dendrite-free zinc anodes.

Abstract:Zn metal has received immense interest as a promising anode of rechargeable aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions greatly retard its practical implementation. Herein, we demonstrate a seamless and multifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) interphase for building corrosion-free and dendrite-free Zn anodes. The on-site coordinated MOF interphase with 3D open framework structure could function as a highly zincophilic mediator and ion sifter that synergistically induces fast and uniform Zn nucleation/deposition. In addition, the surface corrosion and hydrogen evolution are significantly suppressed by the interface shielding of the seamless interphase. An ultrastable Zn plating/stripping is achieved with elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 1000 cycles and prolonged lifetime of 1100 h at 10 mA cm-2 with a high cumulative plated capacity of 5.5 Ah cm-2. Moreover, the modified Zn anode assures the MnO2-based full cells with superior rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:The formation of dendrites on a zinc (Zn) metal anode has limited its practical applications on aqueous batteries. Herein, an artificial composite protective layer consisting of nanosized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to improve the poor wetting effect of aqueous electrolytes on the Zn anode is proposed to reconstruct the Zn/electrolyte interface. In this layer, hydrophilic MOF nanoparticles serve as interconnecting electrolyte reservoirs enabling nanolevel wetting effect as well as regulating an electrolyte flux on Zn anode. This zincophilic interface exhibits significantly reduced charge-transfer resistance. As a result, stable and dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping cycling performance is achieved for over 500 cycles. In addition, especially at higher C-rates, the coating layer significantly reduces the overpotentials in a Zn/MnO2 aqueous battery during cycling. The proposed principle and method in this work demonstrate an effective way to reconstruct a stable interface on metal anodes (e.g., Zn) where a conventional solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) cannot be formed.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion battery has been considered as a key complement to the existing battery technologies due to its intrinsic merits such as operational safety and cost saving. However, issues of dendrite growth and accompanied water consumption hinder its further development. In this work, we utilize a chelating agent, 2-Bis(2-hydroxyethyl) amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (BIS-TRIS), to regulate the solvation sheath structure of Zn2+. Benefiting from such zinc-chelating coordination, Zn2+ 2D diffusion can be restricted and the altered deposition kinetic has contributed to the inhibition of the dendrite growth. In addition, partial substitution of water in solvation shell with chelator can also greatly suppress the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Consequently, a stable symmetric Zn cell with lifetime more than 1000 h at a current density of 1 mA cm−2 is achieved. Moreover, the aqueous Zn/MnO2 battery with BIS-TRIS as electrolyte additive delivers an 86% capacity retention after 600 cycles at 500 mA g−1. This zinc-chelating coordination based facile strategy opens a new window for the future development in dendrite-free Zn anode.

Abstract:Lithium metal is the most promising anode for high energy density batteries. However, lithium dendrite growth resulting from poor interface activity seriously hampers its practical application. An effective method to suppress the Li dendrite growth is to increase interface activity by enhancing interface kinetics and reducing the Li atom lateral diffusion energy barriers. Herein, ZnO-encapsulated black phosphorus (ZnO@BP) nanosheets are synthesized and utilized as a modulation layer to inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites. The ZnO@BP modulation layer incorporates the P species with moderate electronegativity, which enhances the interface kinetics. This facilitates rapid Li+ desolvation and migration ensuring uniform Li+ flux. The lipophilicity of ZnO contributes to the homogeneous nucleation of lithium and increases the lateral Li atom diffusion rate along the electrode. Consequently, the ZnO@BP coated Li metal anodes exhibit enhanced interface kinetics and outstanding cycle stability in symmetric cells. Furthermore, the full cells coupled with LiFePO4 exhibit enhanced rate capacities and cycling stability. These results demonstrate the excellent potential of ZnO@BP modulation layer in activating electrode-electrolyte interface for stable Li metal anodes, providing opportunities for application of lithium metal in high energy density devices.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have been considered promising energy storage systems due to their excellent electrochemical performance, environmental toxicity, high safety and low cost. However, uncontrolled dendrite growth and side reactions at the zinc anode have seriously hindered the development of ZIBs. Herein, we prepared the carbon nanoparticles layer coated zinc anode with (103) crystal plane preferential oriented crystal structure (denoted as C@RZn) by a facile one-step vapor deposition method. The preferential crystallographic orientation of (103) crystal plane promotes zinc deposition at a slight angle, effectively preventing the formation of Zn dendrites on the surface. In addition, the hydrophobic layer of carbon layer used as an inert physical barrier to prevent corrosion reaction and a buffer during volume changes, thus improving the reversibility of the zinc anode. As a result. the C@RZn anode achieves a stable cycle performance of more than 3000 h at 1 mA cm-2 with CE of 99.77 % at 5 mA cm-2. The full battery with C@RZn anode and Mn-doped V6O13 (MVO) cathode show stability for 5000 cycles at the current density of 5 A g-1. This work provides a new approach for the design of multifunctional interfaces for Zn anode.

Abstract:The irrepressible demand for safe and renewable energy storage systems is spurring the rise of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Nonetheless, the severe dendrites growth and side reactions on Zn metal anode hinder the application of aqueous ZIBs. Herein, a versatile zirconium phosphate (ZrP)-based artificial solid electrolyte interface (ASEI) on Zn anode (Zn@ZrP) is constructed by spraying method to solve this dilemma. The unique layer structure and ion exchange properties of ZrP enable the formation of zinc ion channels in the interlayers of ZrP, which can redistribute the Zn2+ ion flux and promote the transport of Zn2+ ion at the interface of Zn anode. Moreover, the ZrP-based ASEI shows the merits of improved Zn2+ desolvation capability, high ionic conductivity and thus greatly facilitates the Zn deposition kinetics. The results reveal that the ZrP-based ASEI improves the Coulombic efficiency to 99.6% for 2000 cycles and enables the Zn@ZrP symmetric cell to realize a dendrite-free plating/stripping with a low voltage hysteresis (45 mV) and a long lifespan (780 h) at 0.5 mA cm−2. Moreover, the feasibility of Zn@ZrP is evaluated by coupling with common MnO2 and V2O5 as full batteries. Notably, the Zn@ZnP//V2O5 cell exhibits outstanding cycling stability (a capacity retention of 72.8% after 5000 cycles).

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered as one of the most promising alternatives for lithium-ion battery because of its high theoretical capacity, mild reaction with water, high hydrogen evolution potential and abundant natural reserves. However, the growth of anode dendrite and the attenuation of cathode capacity limit the application of zinc ion battery. Here, we propose that ZIF-8 can be used as an electrolyte additive for AZIBs to promote dendrite-free zinc anodic plating/stripping process. The results show that under the action of uniform ionic flux of ZIF-8, the zinc anode achieves a lifetime of more than 550 h, and significantly inhibits the occurrence of positive side reactions (106.1 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 ). Density functional theory was used to systematically calculate the binding energy of Zn 2+ to different pore sizes of ZIF-8 and the results reveal that the adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 can control the migration of Zn 2+ . This work expands the application of MOFs in AZIBs and opens up a new door for future research about AZIBs based on MOFs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries are regarded one of the most promising next generation battery technologies for safe and low-cost energy storage applications. However, the inevitable dendrites growth and detrimental side reactions for Zn metal anodes in aqueous electrolytes induce short cycle life, low coulombic efficiencies, and cell failure. Here we propose to construct a MXene-porous polydopamine (MPP) interfacial layer on the Zn metal surface. The abundant functional groups in MPP can effectively trap water molecules to suppress their corrosion to Zn metal, indicating the desolvation and anticorrosion functions. Combined experimental and simulation results show that MPP layers can also lower the nucleation overpotentials and homogenize the electric field distribution and Zn ion flux, which ensure the horizontal and dendrite-free Zn metal deposition. The MPP-Zn electrodes exhibit an exceptionally long cycle life of over 1000 h (10 times that of bare Zn) and excellent high-rate capabilities in (a)symmetric cells. When the optimal Zn anodes were coupled with NH 4 V 4 O 10 cathodes, the Zn metal full cells presented a remarkable capacity of 368 mAh g −1 and negligible capacity degradations after 300 cycles, which rivals the state-of-the-art performance in literature. The multifunction-in-one concept in this work would spur the development of practical Zn metal batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are a low-cost and safe energy storage system, but suffer from detrimental side reactions and Zn dendrites due to the strong interactions between Zn2+ and water molecules in the electrolytes, and random Zn2+ deposition on the anode surface. Here, an electrolyte involving a dual-functional additive of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to bypass these issues is reported. The electrolyte can not only tailor the solvation sheath of Zn2+ but also enable favorably oriented deposition of Zn2+ on the anode surface. The dendrite-free Zn anode in Zn//Zn cells is obtained with high Columbic efficiency (98.8%) and long cycling lifespan (1500 h), six times longer than that of electrolyte without PEG at 0.25 mA cm(-2). What is more, the excellent cycling stability of the prepared batteries (Zn//V2O5 center dot 1.6 H2O) suggests that the developed tailoring strategy may propel a promising pathway for stabilizing Zn metal anodes.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries are highly promising for grid-scale energy storage due to the high safety and low cost; whereas, they also suffer from the limited reversibility and dendrite growth of metallic Zn electrode during plating/stripping processes. In this work, we develop a 3D nanoporous Zn anode for dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping with significantly suppressed undesirable side reactions. The continuously connected dual-channels for electron/ion transfers and improved effective solid-electrolyte interfaces also endow the anode with promoted fast kinetics. These merits are confirmed by the significantly elongated plating/stripping cycles (1400 h under 0.1 mAh cm−2 and 200 h under 10 mAh cm−2) and lowered overpotentials in symmetric cells. Our strategy, comparing with bulk Zn foil anode, also brings largely improved performances to Zn–V2O5 cells using V2O5 cathode, with achieved high energy density 333.8 Wh kg−1, power density 3762.4 W kg−1, and stable cycling for 500 cycles. These results demonstrate the potential of our approach to addressing the reversibility and dendrite issues of rechargeable metal electrodes.

Abstract:Zn metal has been regarded as the most promising anode for aqueous batteries due to its high capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. Zn anode still suffers, however, from low Coulombic efficiency due to the side reactions and dendrite growth in slightly acidic electrolytes. Here, the Zn plating/stripping mechanism is thoroughly investigated in 1 m ZnSO4 electrolyte, demonstrating that the poor performance of Zn metal in mild electrolyte should be ascribed to the formation of a porous by‐product (Zn4SO4(OH)6·x H2O) layer and serious dendrite growth. To suppress the side reactions and dendrite growth, a highly viscoelastic polyvinyl butyral film, functioning as an artificial solid/electrolyte interphase (SEI), is homogeneously deposited on the Zn surface via a simple spin‐coating strategy. This dense artificial SEI film not only effectively blocks water from the Zn surface but also guides the uniform stripping/plating of Zn ions underneath the film due to its good adhesion, hydrophilicity, ionic conductivity, and mechanical strength. Consequently, this side‐reaction‐free and dendrite‐free Zn electrode exhibits high cycling stability and enhanced Coulombic efficiency, which also contributes to enhancement of the full‐cell performance when it is coupled with MnO2 and LiFePO4 cathodes.

Abstract:The side reactions and dendrite growth at the interface of Zn anodes greatly limit their practical applications in Zn metal batteries. Herein, we propose a hybrid molecular sieve-based interfacial layer (denoted as Z7M3) with a hierarchical porous structure for Zn metal anodes, which contains 70 vol % microporous ZSM-5 molecular sieves and 30 vol % mesoporous MCM-41 molecular sieves. Through comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that the mesopores (∼2.5 nm) of MCM-41 can limit the disordered diffusion of free water molecules and increase the wettability of the interfacial layer toward aqueous electrolytes. In addition, the micropores (∼0.56 nm) of ZSM-5 can optimize the Zn2+ solvation structures by reducing the bonded water molecules, which simultaneously decrease the constraint force of solvated water molecules to Zn2+ ions, thus promoting the penetrability and diffusion kinetics of Zn2+ ions in Z7M3. The synergetic effects from the hybrid molecular sieves maintain a constant Zn2+ concentration on the surface of the Zn electrode during Zn deposition, contributing to dendrite-free Zn anodes. Consequently, Z7M3-coated Zn electrodes achieved excellent cycling stability in both half and full cells.
A MOF-based Single-Ion Zn2+ Solid Electrolyte Leading to Dendrite-Free Rechargeable Zn Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable Zn ion battery is a promising alternative for the current portable and mobile energy storage technologies because of its good safety, low cost, and material abundance. Poor deposition reversibility with dendrite formation of Zn metal anode in aqueous electrolytes, which brings the risk of short-circuit and capacity loss (dead Zn), is one of the critical issues that plague its practical applications. To improve the performances of Zn ion batteries, a crystalline single-ion Zn2+ solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is designed based on a post-synthetic modified metal-organic framework. The SSE possesses many advantages such as high ionic conductivity of 2.1 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 30 degrees C, minor activation energy of 0.12 eV, high Zn2+ transference number of 0.93, along with the good mechanical and electrochemical stability. Due to the restricted and guided Zn deposition through the nanowetted Zn/SSE interface at which Zn(H2O)(6)(2+) ions are confined, excellent compatibility between Zn metal anode and the SSE is revealed, which is confirmed firmly by the stable Zn plating/stripping performance, giving rise to a homogeneous, compact, and smooth Zn deposition layer. The good properties of the SSE are further verified in VS2/Zn batteries, which deliver a reversible capacity of 125 mAh g(-1) over 250 cycles at 0.2 A g(-1) and a reasonable rate capability with similar to 40% capacity retention (vs. 0.1 A g(-1)) at 2 A g(-1).

Abstract:A multifunctional metal‐organic‐framework as an artificial interface on Zn is designed and prepared via a simple stamping process. It can separate water molecules from Zn surface, accelerate de‐solvation process, uniform Zn2+ flux, and guide Zn2+ nucleate uniformly. Their synergetic effects inhibit Zn dendrite growth and suppress side reactions at Zn anode/electrolyte interface, boosting its electrochemical performance in batteries. Aqueous Zn‐ion batteries are the ideal candidate for large‐scale energy storage systems owing to their high safety and low cost. However, the uncontrolled deposition and parasitic reaction of Zn metal anode hinder their commercial application. Here, the 2D metal‐organic‐framework (MOF) nanoflakes covered on the surface of Zn are proposed to enable dendrite‐free for long lifespan Zn metal batteries. The MOF can facilitate the desolvation process to accelerate reaction kinetic due to its special channel structure. The abundant zincopilicity sites of MOF can realize the homogenous Zn2+ deposition. Consequently, their synergetic effect makes the MOF protected Zn anode good electrochemical performance with a long cycle life of 1400 h at 1 mA cm−2 and a high depth of discharge of 30 mAh cm−2 (DOD ≈ 54%) continued for over 700 h. This work provides a novel strategy for high‐performance rechargeable Zn‐ion batteries.

Regulating Zn Deposition via an Artificial Solid–Electrolyte Interface with Aligned Dipoles for Long Life Zn Anode

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Highlights</h3><ul class="a-plus-plus"><li class="a-plus-plus">An artificial solid–electrolyte interface composed of a perovskite type material, BaTiO3, is introduced to Zn anode surface in aqueous zinc ion batteries.</li><li class="a-plus-plus">The BaTiO3 layer endowing inherent character of the switched polarization can regulate the interfacial electric field at anode/electrolyte interface.</li><li class="a-plus-plus">Zn dendrite can be restrained, and Zn metal batteries based on BaTiO3 layer show stable cycling.</li></ul>Aqueous zinc ion batteries show prospects for next-generation renewable energy storage devices. However, the practical applications have been limited by the issues derived from Zn anode. As one of serious problems, Zn dendrite growth caused from the uncontrollable Zn deposition is unfavorable. Herein, with the aim to regulate Zn deposition, an artificial solid–electrolyte interface is subtly engineered with a perovskite type material, BaTiO3, which can be polarized, and its polarization could be switched under the external electric field. Resulting from the aligned dipole in BaTiO3 layer, zinc ions could move in order during cycling process. Regulated Zn migration at the anode/electrolyte interface contributes to the even Zn stripping/plating and confined Zn dendrite growth. As a result, the reversible Zn plating/stripping processes for over 2000 h have been achieved at 1 mA cm−2 with capacity of 1 mAh cm−2. Furthermore, this anode endowing the electric dipoles shows enhanced cycling stability for aqueous Zn-MnO2 batteries. The battery can deliver nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency at 2 A g−1 after 300 cycles.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-metal batteries open up promising prospects for large-scale energy storage due to the advantages of ample components, cost-effectiveness, and safety features. However, the notorious dendritic development and unavoidable hydrogen evolution reaction of Zn have grown to be one of the main barriers inhibiting its further commercialization. Despite substantial studies, the mechanism of nucleation and deposition of Zn2+ ions on zinc layer surfaces remains elusive. Here, inspired by additive, the SnCl2 additive is introduced to initiate the in-situ formation of the ZnS-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the Zn anode, which creates a protective "shielding effect" that hinders direct contact between water and the zinc surface, suppressing the random growth of Zn dendrites in the whole process. The mechanism of Zn nucleation was revealed by employing high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, consecutive electron diffraction coupled with finite element method (FEM) simulations. Moreover, spontaneously formed 3D architecture consists of micorsized hemispherical Sn particles not only suppresses the Zn dendrite growth by reducing the local current density, but also enables the lateral growth of Zn crystals by increasing the average surface energy. Such an electrolyte enables a long cycle life of over 2000 h in the Zn||Zn cell. Importantly, the assembled Zn||MnVO full cells with SnCl2 electrolyte also delivers substantial capacity (171.1mA h g-1 at 1 A h g-1), presenting a promising application. These discoveries not only deepen the comprehension of fundamental scientific knowledge regarding the microscopic reaction mechanism of the Zn anode but also offer significant insights for optimizing performance.

Abstract:Metallic zinc is regarded as an ideal anode material for high-energy aqueous zinc ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity, low cost, and abundant resource. However, the undesirable dendrite formation and side reactions occurring on Zn anode during the long-term cycling process seriously restrict the electrochemical performance of the device. Herein, 1-hydroxy ethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) is used as electrolyte additive to release the chemical corrosion and hydrogen evolution occurring on Zn anode based on the absorption of HEDP on the Zn foil. Moreover, the strong coordination of HEDP with Zn2+ can balance ion flux at the electrode/electrolyte interface, thus inducing uniform Zn deposition. Thereby, Zn anode exhibits a prolonged cycle life of reversible Zn plating/stripping under different current densities (2800 h at 2 mA cm-2 , 1 mAh cm-2 , and more than 1772 h at 4 mA cm-2 , 1 mAh cm-2 ). Moreover, the cell shows a high average coulombic efficiency of ≈99.6% for ≈600 cycles at 1 mA cm-2 with a cycling capacity of 1 mAh cm-2 . This work provides a facile yet effective method for developing reversible aqueous zinc metal batteries.
