Abstract:A simple, economical, and green method for the preparation of water soluble, high fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) has been prepared via hydrothermal process using jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) as a carbon source. The optical properties of synthesized CQDs were characterized by UV- visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), x-ray Diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) techniques were used to study the composition and size of the CQDs. The prepared CQDs were spherical in shape with an average size of 2.5 nm along with uniform distribution and showed bright bluish green emission properties, without any further surface modification. The prepared CQDs were exhibit high stability at neutral pH and showed high photo-stability under UV light irradiation at 365 nm. The obtained CQDs were effectively utilized as fluorescent probe for highly selective and sensitive detection of Hg2+ and Cr6+ ions in environmental samples with a limit of detection of about 8 and 10 nM respectively.
