Abstract:The urban environment of Doha has witnessed a remarkable transformation during the past few decades, which has been triggered by economic growth due to oil and gas revenues. Doha has attracted foreign investment to participate in the urbanisation of the city, specifically in the construction of the smart public transport system (ie Bus Transit [BT], Lusail Light Rail Transit [LRT] and the Doha Metro). As a result, mega projects and transit villages were developed along the public transport system, especially around the major metro stations. These developments align with the national development strategy defined in the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV-2030). This research investigates the development and implementation of transit villages around the transit systems (also known as the transit-oriented development [TOD]) at the Qatar National Museum (QNM) metro station in Old Salata neighbourhood. The research design focuses on: (i) a review of the relevant literature; (ii) the site analysis; and (iii) the generation of an integrated strategy for the development of the transit village of Old Salata. The proposed master plan for QNM TOD is supported by the need for preserving the architectural heritage, through a compact and mixed-use urban form, where multimodal transport systems, green spaces, public amenities and a pedestrian-friendly environment are provided. In turn, the insights from this investigation will contribute to the implementation of an urban planning approach for shaping a liveable community in Doha.

Abstract:In the past 20 years, the State of Qatar has undergone rapid urban growth. Doha, the capital city, has capitalised on large-scale urban and infrastructural projects to strengthen and diversify its economy. The transport system, however, has largely relied on private vehicles, resulting in the need for a new public transit system: the Doha Metro. The recent construction of the metro system is opening up new avenues for the urban regeneration of transit towns as compact, liveable and sustainable neighbourhoods. Due to its historic and cultural significance, the Souq Waqif and the Qatar National Museum (QNM) neighbourhoods have been selected as a case study for this paper to explore and define a strategy for placemaking, based on a sustainable transit-oriented development (TOD) model. The research design is structured in four stages: 1) reviewing the literature about TODs and urbanisation in Qatar; 2) collecting oral and visual data from municipal authorities through structured interviews, site visits and site observations; 3) analysing the collected data and identifying the assessment tools to be adopted; and 4) implementing a novel masterplan focusing on public transit systems as a catalyst for sustainable urban transformation and placemaking. The findings contribute to proposing context-driven design strategies to enhance the liveability of the investigated TODs and to extend their application to other potential transit hubs in metropolitan Doha and in the Middle East.

Abstract:Purpose This research study aims at revealing a planning method for the development of the Souq Waqif-Transit village. Design/methodology/approach Over the past decade, transit-oriented developments (TODs) have become an international city planning model for promoting sustainable urbanism. On a regional scale, the State of Qatar launched the construction of Doha Metro. The current network consists of three lines with a central interchange station within the city's most vibrant cultural core, i.e., between Msheireb Downtown Doha and Msheireb, near to the Souq Waqif historical site and Al Corniche waterfront promenade. The Qatar National Development Framework emphasizes the importance of stimulating sustainable urban growth by linking the Doha Metro with TODs. Findings The findings show that the benefits of a strategy for monitoring and assessing the potential benefits of the investigated TOD linked to the analysis of the indices for (1) travel behavior, (2) built environment diversity and (3) other categories specific to the site's historical-heritage preservation. Research limitations/implications Namely, a comprehensive approach for developing a historical site is/should be grounded in a planning method for enhancing the mixed-used urban fabric, public realm and walkability, and heritage preservation. Social implications The insights from this research study aim to guide the long-term sustainable urban growth of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) cities in the future. Originality/value The proposed sustainable growth planning scheme for the Souq Waqif addresses gaps highlighted through design tools of investigation. The missing attributes concern three key factors: (1) mixed-used urban fabric, (2) public realm and walkability and (3) built heritage preservation. The quality of streetscape, corridors, connections and connectivity of pedestrian and walkable network: TOD is not dependent on a singular mode of transport (Doha Metro), but it includes all systems that allow for mass public mobility within the city districts. Integrating other transport systems within mixed-use areas should be reevaluated based on accessibility to such systems, including taxi services, public bus services and public shuttles.

Abstract:Abstract During the past two decades, Qatar, a developing country, has invested heavily in infrastructure development to address several challenges caused by the rapid urbanization. Qatar has made a significant step toward its urban sustainability vision through the construction of the Doha Metro system. By adopting Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), Qatar is overcoming some urban challenges. TOD promotes compact, walkable, and mixed-use development around the transit nodes, which enhances the public realm through providing pedestrian-oriented and active spaces. Additionally, Qatar aims to transfer to a knowledge-based economy through developing an environment that will attract knowledge and creative human power. Qatar Foundation is taking the lead toward implementing a Knowledge-Based Urban Development (KBUD) through its flagship project: Education City (EC). This study aims therefore to evaluate the integration of TOD and KBUD strategies to leverage the potential of TOD in attracting knowledge and creative economy industries. The selected case study is Qatar National Library (QNL) metro station at the EC in Doha. The study examines the potential of QNL as a destination TOD to enhance the area's mission as a driver for a knowledge-based economy. The methodological approach is based on the analytical concepts obtained from the Integrated Modification Methodology as a sustainable urban design process. The study’s results revealed that void and function, followed by volume, are the weakest layers of the study area's Complex Adaptive System which require morphological modification to achieve sustainability and a knowledge-hub TOD. The study offers recommendations to assist planners and designers in making better decisions toward regenerating urban areas through a knowledge-hub TOD contributing to the spill out of knowledge and creativity into the public realm creating a human-centric vibrant public space adjacent to metro stations.

Abstract:Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) assessment models are commonly used to assess existing and planned metro station catchment areas. Elements like diversity, density, design, destination, distance, and demand management are considered in the 6Ds TOD assessment model. Assessment of these elements in the designing stage depends on the TOD expert’s involvement to ensure the effectiveness of the model. The aim of this research is to develop novel pre-TOD assessment guidelines that consist of Spatial Analysis, Virtual Function of Transit Station (VFTS), and Estimated Spatial Analysis, which can improve the reliability of the assessment conclusion according to the 16 planning elements. The research applies three methodologies: (1) analytical approach to evaluate the TOD concept and its assessment model; (2) development of pre-TOD assessment guidelines using the Delphi technique; and (3) conduct a case study of the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center metro station in Qatar to validate the developed model. The findings are a new concept, called the Dependent Component Area (DCA) of the metro station, and VFTS classifications of the metro station include an urban connector, suburban connector, destination, and destination connector. The newly developed pre-TOD assessment guidelines can enhance TOD assessment methods, especially in emerging cities. Moreover, these assessment guidelines will provide TOD and planning experts with more precise data and information related to the DCA.

Abstract:Currently, urban underground space in most mountainous cities in Southwest China has developed slowly. Underground space planning in mountainous cities is often influenced by many factors, such as complex topography, geological conditions and the surrounding environment, so this has severely restricted the expansion of above-ground and underground space. The underground space available is quite compact in mountainous cities and it is common to cross with the foundations of the ground buildings. Therefore, two crucial facts need to be considered when the planning of the center areas in a mountainous city is prepared, including 1) increasing potential demand for underground space and 2) reducing the requisition and demolition of ground buildings. This paper presents an innovative solution for layout planning and implementation of Baoshan South Road Metro Station on Guiyang Rail Transit Line 2 in Southwest China. A new type of “End-mounted & intensive” subway station is designed, which effectively achieves the advantages such as a compact and safe structure, high space utilisation, less expropriation and demolition, and low cost. This innovative scenario improves the carrying capacity of surface environment and it also increases the comprehensive utilisation of underground space in mountainous urban areas. Besides, it has important environmental demonstration significance and economic benefits, promoting the rapid development of rail transit construction in mountainous urban areas.

Abstract:Abstract. To make transit rail services more attractive, the preferred public travel mode and serve as the backbone of any metropolitan area, there arises a need to create a sustainable and inclusive urban environment with access to all. This study aims to map the pedestrian permeability and impermeability by categorizing roads and streets around identified transit nodes in Noida as public, private and non-accessible by all. By doing so, the study identifies very distinct and spatial divisions like gated communities and urban villages that have emerged as social ghettos in the planned city Noida and thereby, devoid it of being an inclusive city. Initial metro station smart android-based mobile surveys were done across 12 elevated metro stations falling on the blue transit corridor line connecting Delhi with its satellite town Noida using smart apps namely ODK and Kobo Toolbox with the analysis done in QGIS. It was found that trip distance and time had a strong association with walking while age, gender and purpose of the trip had no association with walking to the metro station. Most transit users living within one-kilometer walking distance prefer to walk to the nearest metro station in Noida. Finally, the study shows the area difference between the perceived and actual Isochrones prepared in QGIS as Ped-sheds after deducing areas such as gated communities, superblocks and unplanned settlements like urban villages where the existing road/street network is not accessible by all or safe to use.

Abstract:New urbanism aims to reform the constructed cities as it seeks to create new and complete cities. The main idea of transit oriented development (TOD) is manly based on the public railroad transportation as the quickest and most effective tool in competition with automobiles (car) in order to cause an effective change in the transportation style and decrease the dependence on cars and horizontal growth of the city. In the current study, the experiences of the development corridors are analyzed after investigating the transit oriented development using applied descriptive method and the planning, capitalization and implementation methods are examined based on the corridor development theory. Types of land use suitable for development including residential, commercial, educational, leisure time and so are evaluated in terms of establishment and location. Next, the feasibility of implementation of this method in new spaces created by subway lines in the Mashhad city is studied. Investigation of one of the urban train lines shows that a station named Koohestan Park (mountain-park) located in the Vakil Abad Boulevard has appropriate potentials and advantages for corridor development and urban investments and can contain diverse land uses for orientation toward sustainable objectives. Finally, land use and market activity in the area around this station are investigated using the SWOT model and the necessity of investment and creation of corridor development unit is evaluated.

Planning for a neighborhood and city-scale green network system in Qatar: the case of MIA Park

Abstract:Abstract In the past decade, Doha has witnessed fast-urban growth, an increased population rate, and an over-reliance on the automobile as the main mode of urban transportation. These factors caused social and environmental problems related to (1) the loss of a compact urban pattern, (2) an increased level of air pollution (3) high traffic congestions and (4) increasing landscape fragmentation. In consideration of such concerns, The State of Qatar invested large funds into the urban landscape development of Doha, as envisioned by Qatar National Vision 2030. As a result, in the past five years various parks and/or green areas, such MIA Park, a major public green space located around the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), were planned and developed within metropolitan Doha. The authors argue that this park is currently facing issues and challenges related to (1) accessibility to/from the neighboring districts, and (2) connectivity to/from the neighboring parks. Therefore, this research study aims at assessing the existing conditions of MIA Park, at considering the broader city context and, at recommending strategies for implementing MIA Park’s green network system. It approached the investigative challenge using a multi-pronged comprehensive methodology, that deployed focus groups, semi-structured interviews and a comprehensive network analysis based on graph theory. The findings, revealed through these hybrid research tactics, allowed the researchers to generate a framework to enhance accessibility and connectivity of MIA Park through a green network system, planned at inter-related neighborhood-scale and city-scale levels. While the research examines most notably a single case, it is advocated that the proposed framework represents not just an optional feature pertaining to the case in Doha, but a valuable reference for the sustainable master planning of future cities in the State of Qatar and across the GCC. The paper proffers numerous key contributions, including the critical exploration of manufactured landscapes in Doha Qatar and the delineation of broadly applicable environmental design strategies to improve the fabric and livability of cities.

Abstract:After the oil and economic boom of the 20th century, Doha experienced significant development in terms of the architectural scene, design, function, and sociocultural transformations. The advancements in global architecture have facilitated innovative and streamlined construction processes, while creating a paradigm shift in the overall architecture of dwellings and how people navigate around the house. In this context, this research aims to study the impact of globalization on housing typologies and the factors influencing their evolution, focusing on the city of Doha as a case study. This study is based on a qualitative research approach that centers its investigation on Doha while exploring strategies for preserving Arabic-Islamic identity. The research investigation used a content analysis methodology to analyze three additional case studies within the MENA region. The results indicate that new housing typologies have emerged in cities due to globalization and changes in physical and sociocultural dimensions. In addition, preserving older neighborhoods and housing typologies through a bottom-up approach is essential for design creativity and climatic and sociocultural sensitivity while exchanging knowledge and sharing experiences between generations. Furthermore, this article promotes heritage awareness and encourages local authorities to preserve Doha’s surviving historic neighborhoods and architectural language to restore the city’s urban identity. The findings of this research can provide helpful guidance to architects and urban planners on how Doha’s housing has developed until the contemporary period.

Abstract:Abstract Transit-oriented development (TOD) links residential, retail, commercial, and community service developments to frequent, accessible rail transit services to stimulate sustainable development in the form of decreased land use and transport integration. A mixed-use shopping mall can be developed as a TOD with moderate to high density with diverse land use patterns and well-connected street networks centred around and integrated with a rail transit station. Shopping mall developments are now considered as the retail, social, and community centres of their communities. Therefore, understanding their services’ mixed impact on nearby transit stations will provide further insight into the success of the TOD approach. As a result, this study aims to review and link the recent literature on attractiveness factors of shopping malls and the design factors of TOD and report the researchers’ analytic observations (themes) clarifying transit-oriented shopping mall developments’ (TOSMDs) attractiveness factors. The review systematically synthesises 208 guiding articles. It uses the elements of the extended service marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion, people, physical evidence, and process) and the five factors related to TODs (density, diversity, urban design, destination accessibility, and distance) as an indicator system for the factors determining the attractiveness of TOSMD. The review outcome is utilised to establish a conceptual framework for the attractiveness of rail TOSMDs. The study revealed fragmented causes of attractiveness factors of rail TOSMDs. It contributes to further understanding of TOD as it cross-reviews retail and urban design literature findings. The resultant conceptual framework will also inform and potentially enhance the existing rail transit station passenger forecasting models and increase the economic sustainability of rail transit networks.

Abstract:Abstract Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) hosted a workshop entitled “Impact of Sustainable Buildings in Arid Environment on the Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality,” held in Doha, Qatar, on May 17–19, 2022, co-funded by the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), and co-organized by City College of New York (CCNY). The workshop provided a premier interdisciplinary platform for local researchers and enablers to engage and exchange knowledge and experiences with international leading practitioners and subject matter experts in the fields of sustainable buildings, indoor and outdoor air quality, and the urban heat island phenomena. A diverse number of regional partners and stakeholders were represented. The workshop benefitted from a pool of invited international subject experts from various universities and entities. The outcome-driven workshop included breakout sessions where participants actively engaged in brainstorming discussions guided by facilitators. The discussions focused on driving impact in Qatar and beyond by examining the current research landscape and identifying collaborative opportunities. The short-term and long-term outcomes of potential initiatives and project proposals are outlined in this summary. An example of a short-term outcome is the proposed collaborative project to investigate the impact of almost doubling the state of Qatar’s population (over 1.5 million fans are expected to visit the country during the World Cup causing a shock to the system) on vital elements in the city, such as mobility, telecommunication services, and the local environment. In addition, multiple potential research proposals with international collaborations were proposed. A special issue on the subject in the Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities was recommended as an immediate actionable outcome.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced significant urban growth, prompting the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to advocate for sustainable transport solutions. This led to the implementation of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) to address urban mobility, environmental sustainability, and energy efficiency. Dubai has strategically prioritized infrastructure and transportation network expansion to support its rapid development. This paper aims to examine the critical role of the LRT system, particularly the metro and tramway, in steering Dubai towards sustainability. Metro and tramway systems offer crucial high-capacity public transport, enhance connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to a sustainable environment. The study assesses the transformative impact of the Dubai Metro on urban development, focusing on key stations like Jabal Ali, Al-Barsha First, and Business Bay. Using qualitative research methods, including GIS, spatial maps, interviews, case studies, and land use investigations, the research analyzes population density, connectivity, accessibility, and urban land use patterns around these stations. Results indicate a positive impact of the Dubai Metro on both commercial and residential land use, improved connectivity, and enhanced accessibility, reinforcing its role in cultivating a sustainable urban environment.

Abstract:The transit-oriented development literature has focused on the built environment around stations in operation, largely neglecting how the station location was selected. We hypothesize that city governments in China are likely to put stations outside established suburban centers. By putting metro stations at relatively underdeveloped places, city governments can lower right-of-way cost and gain more revenue from future land transactions. Using Shenzhen as a case study, we test this hypothesis with metro planning examples and land transaction data from 2000 to 2014. We found that metro alignment and station placement has bypassed the core of established communities. This planning practice is supported by a strong real estate market that appreciates transit accessibility, despite the high transit operation subsidy.

Abstract:The starting point of this study is to examine the open space of the Museum of Islamic Art Park, located in Doha, through the design criteria to find out, qualitively and quantatively, its sufficiency for users. The park area, located by the sea, is one of the most modern open spaces in Qatar's capital and was designed to complement the adjacent Museum of Islamic Art. Beyond a mere park, the design claims to bring together the public with the new urban space. In this context, the study is aimed at determining the use of the space by analysing its physical features, evaluating the sufficiency of the programme elements' quality and quantity, determining the potential of the research area as a public open space by evaluating its visual life quality and attractiveness, guiding park designs with similar features, and providing a reference for other spatial analysis and evaluation research. Firstly, literature on the research subject and area was studied. The evaluation criterias were determined by the findings from the literature and by visiting the area and these were used to create the analysis form to apply to the research area. Next, using the analysis forms in the field, the research area was evaluated under General information, Physical and Sensorial analysis. At the end of the study, the existing literature and fieldwork findings were evaluated with a holistic approach. It was found that the space brings together people from all ages and social groups; as well as providing an attractive social environment, the park hosts several urban spatial components in one place. Finally, recommendations were made for enhancing the visual/spatial quality and attractiveness of the area.

Design Strategies to Improve Metro Transit Station Walking Environments: Five Stations in Chongqing, China

Abstract:While transit-oriented development (TOD) has been widely adopted in urban design alongside the expansion of urban metro transit, the creation of pedestrian-friendly environments has often been overlooked during implementation. This has resulted in a lower walking advantage around metro transit stations. To address this issue and encourage walking and public transport use in metro transit station areas, this study undertook a quantitative comparative analysis of the pedestrian environment in five Chongqing metro transit station areas. The analysis focused on three key dimensions: "comprehensive evaluation", "basic scale", and "structural quality". The comprehensive evaluation considered factors such as the pedestrian catchment area ratio, POI kernel density distribution, and crowd agglomeration. The basic scale dimension comprised floor area ratio, building density, pedestrian road density, and the quantity of station entrances and exits. Finally, structural quality factors included land use type mixing degree, POI function mixing degree, intersection connectivity, median street length, pedestrian route directness, and green view index. Based on these analyses, this study proposes a series of pedestrian environment design strategies including land use and transportation. The strategies for land use advocate for "developing compact and diverse land use", "strengthening attraction of station center", "positioning large projects on the edge", "restricting private transportation capabilities". The strategies for transportation consist of "increasing pedestrian road density", "traffic calming organization", "subdivision of road types", and "three-dimensional pedestrian traffic system". These strategies aim to create a more humanized and environmentally friendly pedestrian environment, proactively rise to the challenge of climate change, thereby cultivating sustainable urban development.

Abstract:Abstract The Ryazanskaya Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a large intervention included in Moscow’s 2030 urban planning, realizing a transit hub, commercial / retail spaces, an office tower and two metro/rail terminal buildings, to be built around a public park where ground transportation is also located. Within this master plan, the Terminal 2 integrates an underground transit hall to provide access for three mass transportation lines merging at Ryazanskaya TOD. Such urban-scale complex required international best practice architectural solutions, particularly focused onto the relationship between underground spaces and above-ground structures. The Ryazanskaya project is a case study useful to understand and explain the typical TOD urban design methodology, as a part of a large city-making process originated by the design of underground infrastructures and concluded with the architectural design of a strategic asset for the contemporary metropolis.
