Abstract:Optical fibers are particularly suitable for remote, microscopic, and in-situ applications due to their small size, diverse integration capabilities, and low insertion loss. However, conventional optical fiber materials and manufacturing techniques limit the further development of optical fiber devices. The application of photopolymer in the additive manufacturing of integrated optical fiber devices motivates the evolution of optical fibers toward beam shaping, advanced imaging, optical sensing, and integrated photonic circuit applications. In particular, the photopolymer self-growing technology, which enables the preparation of functional structures for optical fibers by conducting light inside the fiber, exhibits the advantages of easy preparation, flexibility, high reliability, and high sensitivity. The combination of photopolymer self-growing technology with optical fibers is a new pathway for the realization of advanced multifunctional lab-on-fiber. However, a more comprehensive understanding of polymer photochemistry and microfabrication processes can enable new strategic designs and open up far-reaching applications for optical fiber integrated functional devices. This review highlights advanced strategies for applying photopolymer self-growing technology in lab-on-fiber by discussing photopolymer's physicochemical properties, functions, and applications, demonstrating their unique advantages and possible challenges, and providing insights into the future.
