Abstract:<p>In this study, a novel method using a phosphonium‐based deep eutectic solvent coupled with vortex‐assisted liquid‐liquid microextraction was investigated for the enrichment and separation of five benzoylurea insecticides in olive oil. The experimental factors affecting the extraction efficiency, including the extractant type, deep eutectic solvent volume, extraction time and extraction mode, were optimized. Under optimal conditions, good linearity was observed for all target analytes, with correlation coefficients (r) ranging from 0.9971 to 0.9998; the limits of detection were in the range of 1.5 to 7.5 μg L−1, and the recoveries of analytes using the proposed method ranged between 66.9 and 111.0%. The simple, rapid and effective method was successfully applied for detecting target analytes in olive oil sample.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is the development of a new method for the detection of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in olive oil. Specifically, the researchers propose a vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (VLLME) method based on phosphonium deep eutectic solvents (DES), combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technology, to achieve effective enrichment and separation of five benzoylurea insecticides in olive oil. ### Background and Issues 1. **Characteristics of Benzoylurea Insecticides**: - Benzoylurea insecticides are a class of chitin synthesis inhibitors, characterized by low toxicity to the environment and safety for non-target organisms (such as bees, birds, and humans). - These insecticides have been widely used in agricultural production and pest control since their first commercialization in 1975. 2. **Potential Risks**: - Benzoylurea insecticides may migrate in ecosystems, especially in aquatic environments, showing high toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and crustaceans. - Long-term exposure to these insecticides may adversely affect food safety and human health. 3. **Regulatory Requirements**: - Some organizations and countries have established regulations for the use of benzoylurea insecticides. For example, China's "National Food Safety Standard" (GB 2763-2019) stipulates the maximum residue limit (MRL) for benzoylurea insecticides in olive oil to be 0.1-0.5 mg/kg. ### Research Objectives - Develop a simple, rapid, and effective method for detecting trace residues of benzoylurea insecticides in olive oil. - Optimize extraction conditions to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of the method. ### Method Overview - **Preparation of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES)**: By heating different phosphonium-based hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) and ethylene glycol (EG) to 50°C, a homogeneous liquid is formed. - **Vortex-Assisted Liquid-Liquid Microextraction (VLLME)**: Mix 1 mL of olive oil sample with 7 mL of n-hexane, then add 130 μL of DES, and vortex for 1 minute for extraction. - **High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Analysis**: Dissolve the extracted sample in acetonitrile for HPLC analysis. ### Main Results - **Linear Range and Detection Limits**: Under optimal conditions, the linear correlation coefficients (r) for all target analytes ranged from 0.9971 to 0.9998, with detection limits (LOD) between 1.5 and 7.5 μg/L. - **Recovery Rates**: After spiking olive oil samples with different concentrations of standard solutions, the recovery rates for the five benzoylurea insecticides ranged from 66.9% to 111.0%, with precision (RSD) between 0.2% and 9.7%. ### Conclusion - The method was successfully applied to the detection of benzoylurea insecticides in olive oil, demonstrating good reproducibility and high extraction efficiency. - The VLLME method based on phosphonium deep eutectic solvents provides a new option for detecting benzoylurea insecticides in olive oil.
